listening to podcasts & audiobooks is the best. your eyes never have to leave the page.
that said aside from maybe inkstuds occasionally can't do comic podcasts any more. just comedy. ill give dittoes to superego, harmontown, & the indoor kids. I wanted to try cartoon book club but haven't gotten around to it yet.
im at work at the moment doing this on my phone. ill come back & add descriptions & links in an editor later. but heres the list:
WTFMarc Maron rants & then interviews a comedian generally, though there's been more musicians & others on there lately. In my opinion, the premier comedy podcast, even if it gets dark & weird & personal sometimes. If you like a certain comedian, Maron's probably interviewed them & it was at least pretty good. Highly recommended. IFC gave him a show as himself with the podcast too. I've only seen two but they were pretty good.
The Dana Gould HourDana Gould picks a topic as a starting point & him & other comedians & friends of note have a fairly organic conversation, generally leaving that topic almost immediately. A bunch of smart dudes making dumb jokes. It comes out a bit infrequently, but it's always worth the wait.
Smartest Man in the WorldGreg Proops talks about the current events, baseball, old movies, the roman empire, funk legends of the 70's, etc. Probably my favorite podcast to listen to actually, though one I feel weird recommending to people only because of the topics covered & the sound of his voice. I mean I can't get into baseball. But when Proops is telling a story about how Pete Rose is cheating on his wife while out of town, with his friend standing watch, & the wife pulls up, & the friend knocks on the door to alert Pete Rose & Pete Rose just yells "I didn't drive 200 miles just to bang my wife!" & slams the door in his face, Baseball's pretty funny, right?
The Pod F TompkastPaul F. Tompkins riffs for a bit, then pretends to be both sides of an important hollywood phone conversation regarding a very important project that never quite got off the ground (Tompkins does everyone from John C. Reilly to Garry Marshall to Werner Herzog to Ice T to Buddy Valastro, the Cake Boss), then plays part of his live show at Largo at the Coronet, then calls Jen Kirkman, who's also hilarious. I feel like with & the last couple, describing does little justice. But I assure you, it's funny. Give it a listen.
Dead Authors PodcastTompkins again is HG Wells who uses his time machine to interview another comedian as another dead author (ie Matt Walsh as Tolkien, Nick Kroll as Jorge Luis Borge, John Hodgman as Ayn Rand etc). I'm still only through a couple of these but I dig it.
The Todd Glass ShowTodd Glass hosts a podcast that's kind of a morning zoo radio show meets old timey sketch gag show meets your uncle telling lame jokes at a family get-together. It's bizarre. 90% they just riff & force premises & while it can be a little hit or miss, I personally think it's hysterical. I think the best ones are when he's got Rory Scovel on. Or Paul F. Tompkins (if you can sense a theme)
Cashing in With TJ MillerCash Levy is the host with special guest TJ Miller every time. They tackle hard questions & riff. Again pretty silly, would probably annoy many of you, but I dig the hell out of it.
Judge John HodgmanJohn Hodgman rules over first world problems in a people's court type setting. He's often quite hilarious as the erudite judge, but the people whose cases are brought before him can sometimes be pretty irritating. On a case by case basis, it can be pretty great.
Thrilling Adventure Hour (particularly Beyond Belief)
Every month a live show is recorded at Largo at the Coronet in the style of old radio dramas. They get a lot of great comedians & actors. People like James Urbaniak (voice of Dr. Venture on the Venture Brothers), Scott Aukerman (see Comedy Bang Bang below), Patton Oswald (who you should know already), & Nathan Fillon (who I can't stand but maybe you like). The show is split into segments & each segment its own ongoing series. My favorite is Beyond Belief where Paul F. Tompkins (yeah again) & Paget Brewster (voice of Bird Girl from Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law) play married socialite psychic mediums/perma-drunks Frank & Sadie Doyle. A kickstarter was held recently & they're putting out an anthology comic based on all the Thrilling Adv Hour stories. But again,
I like this series best.
Doug Loves MoviesDoug Benson watches all movies. Him & a panel of comedials & movie types sit & talk about a movies before playing pretty awesome/terrible, convoluted, movie-based games that you can take & apply to car trips & power outages. Such as the Leonard Maltin Game, where you bid how many actors you can guess a movie in from bottom billing according to the leonard maltin guide review, & part of maltin's description of the movie.
Comedy Bang BangScott Aukerman interviews a comedian or two. But the studio has an open door policy that often leads to wacky & zany antics. Unlike WTF though, it's never personal, always absurd. Also an IFC show with Reggie Watts as band leader.
oh & lately
Mysterious Universe which is a paranormal podcasts with two sorta smug dudes from Australia
and also im a terrible friend. my friends sean witzke & tucker stone do the
Travis Bickle on the Riviera podcast. probably the best one.
