I'll throw in with Mol or Johanna :v

The child of Holden and Mol, Johanna inherited versions of her father's powers and her mother's will to use them.

-Mute from birth, so she communicates through sign language and writing.
-Manipulative, black-hearted, and willing to commit vile atrocities to make her dreams reality.
-Her blood is haunted by a multitude of ghosts, allowing her to manipulate it into shapes such as spikes and blades.
-Her father's bloodline has also given her flight and precognition, though she doesn't know when her visions will happen.
-Reading her mother's texts on magic has given her a grasp of the basics, but she lacks the drive to use it.

If it's NY I can guarantee I can't make it, that's almost 12 hours one way and I can't afford a plane ticket.

spit spat, time to chat / Re: Defaults
« on: May 16, 2017, 05:16 AM »
In my relatively short time here I've both won and lost through default, and neither time felt good. When I was the one defaulting, I was going through an intense depressive spiral. I was an inch from being homeless again, wasn't making enough from my new job, I definitely wasn't happy with my artistic skill at that point, just absolutely nothing was going right and I just could not bring myself to work on it. I also didn't tell anyone what was going on, and it was agonizing watching the days pass knowing that I had wasted all that time with nothing to show for it. So I took a break, and didn't do another battle for months. And that was for an event, so I know there were people who were upset with me. When I won to a default, I was in open communication with my opponent the entire time, and knew exactly what they were going through. Roughly same situation, couldn't work on it, they felt really bad afterwords, didn't do much for a while, but because they were open about it and let me know what was happening, there were no hard feelings.

So like, look. Defaulting happens. It sucks. I think a lot of why it happens is people jumping in without really planning out how it's gonna get done, or shit happens and that time they thought they had disappears in a puff of actual real-life responsibilities, and real talk, no one is psychic. 2-4 weeks is a long time and a lot can pop up in that time. But this is where open communication is key. If you're struggling, there is an entire community here to talk to. And if you just gotta wait until life is more stable, then do it, this isn't school, you're not paying money to be here, there's no obligation to battle.

I do agree with Sabu in regards to repeat defaults/incompletes in that a battle ban might be a good idea for those who this has become an issue for. Life happens, but there is a point where it becomes a matter of personal responsibility. Maybe have it implemented for a set period of time, or they have to show that they can at least finish a solo comic before having the ban lifted or something.

Bottom line, there're almost always options, and communication is key to let your opponent or the community know what's going on so there's no confusion or bad blood. I want this community to stay accepting and welcoming, but there is a point where enough is enough and your personal choices and actions start affecting the experiences of others.

Okay I gotta be honest, as much as I really, really want to be a part of this, I'm gonna have to pull back my entry. I thought hard about it, and I just don't have the time, willpower, or confidence in skill to participate.

For Rev, look up "digitigrade legs" I think that's what you're going for. They are a little tricky to draw but there are tons of references out there for that best-person/furry leg type.

I'll just be straight forward: I think it's great that you want another character in, but you're going to have to clean up work your a bit before submitting. I know you were an invitational person so you've never submitted a character normally, but it's the only time where we expect members to do their very best. Tighten up your lines, take care to fill in colors completely, etc. Even if a super amazing artist submits something that was obviously rushed, it will be declined. Take your time, make it shine.

Oh no, I know. I'm still not even close to being ready to submit these two, I'm just looking for advice of any sort to help make the process smoother and bring out the best possible outcome.

THE INCUBATOR / Scarywave's Scary Designs
« on: Mar 20, 2017, 12:14 PM »

Here they are, after stewing in my brain for a bit, Kirske and Rev: Monster Hunters!

Kirske is a nonbinary human from a small country hamlet.

Rev is an agender elf from an island of dragon-dinos.

Both of them are from the super-distant past.

Kirske, during a moment of dire need, broke off a branch from a sacred tree and unknowingly trapped the soul of a monster in it. This pissed off both the god of Monsters and the god of Death, who each put a curse on them: that they will be hunted by monsters for the rest of their life, and once they die they cannot enter the afterlife. So after thinking about it for about an hour, Kirske sets off to collect as many monster souls as possible, amass an army, and challenge the gods to get the curses removed.

Rev gets wind of a roaming champion who is slaughtering beasts of all kinds and sets out to turn them away from their island. Once meeting them, though, Rev sympathizes with Kirske's plight and decides to help them challenge the gods, while also getting to travel lands that they had been unable to experience until this point.

Rev has spent all 130 years of their life on their island, learning about the outside world from the more dragon-y dragons that reside there. Incredibly strong and a fast learner, they are able to buff themselves up further by channeling the natural magic of the earth into their body. None of this helps the fact that Rev can only speak Draketongue, the language of their island kin, and thus their knowledge and wit go largely unappreciated, except by Kirske, whom they taught how to understand and speak.

Kirske has largely had to rely on their ambition and tenacity to get through life in their hamlet, where they were often misunderstood and criticized for their identity and aversion to the more spiritual aspects of daily living. This has given them a smart mouth, despite the fact that they're not actually all that smart. The curses that they've been burdened with show as marks on both their neck and forehead, which they attempt to cover with their scarf and hair respectively, more out of embarrassment than anything else. In combat, they utilize the branch they broke from the tree, dubbed Palewood, to summon the spirits of monsters housed in it to fight on their behalf. Each soul only has a single use, though.

Congratulations to ScaryWaves for graduating bootcamp!

ScaryWaves has completed a 7 page fully colored comic in one week

I honestly couldn't be happier with the end result. It was a rough week, but I've learned so much during it and the end result is my best work yet. If you're on the fence about trying this, don't be. It is 100% worth it.
