Whoops, forgot to sign up here! I'm entering with a Big Wyrm

@ArtsandGoodies that video was extremely helpful, thank you!

@Elyan I'm trying that out right now! Thanks for the 300 dpi trick too, bc the pixel thing does frustrate me a lot. I'm sticking to the simple brush you suggested and hopefully once I'm happy with my inking style I can play around with coloured or softer edged lines.

There are many things about my art that I dislike, but my inks have got to be wayy at the top. I have never found a brush that suits me and hate how much my art fluctuates as a result of trying different brushes all the time. I want my lines to be clean, but also soft and not too "harsh" and artificial looking, like something drawn in Paint for instance. I also don't like brushes that are too transparent since that makes it harder for me to colour in nicely.

Here are some comics I've done with different brushes:

Does anyone have any recommendations for Photoshop brushes, or tips on how to use/adjust the brushes I currently have so I can get closer to my goal? Also of the ones I've tried out so far, which looks best? Am I being too harsh on myself and should I stick to one of them for now until I can find what I'm looking for? Also if I come across as too vague, I'd be happy to share some artists with lines I like if that would help with suggestions :)

Is this still a thing? :0

Omg I was genuinely joking about having both characters drawn, so you can knock off the “group pic if willing” part under my name! I’d feel super guilty if someone actually drew both haha, sorry I wasn’t clear

Signing up!! I don’t mind either of my characters :) Or maybe.. both? Haha just kidding... unless? 80

@Dechado Added the list, thanks for the suggestion! :) Also I'm pretty much only considering Team v Team or Retribution style individual battles, not Roulettes or Royales. The appeal of the event is that it's two groups of monsters that historically have beef with each other duking it out through comic form - a roulette may pair up shifter with shifter or undead with undead, and a Royale would result in one individual winner, not a winning side. Neither of which is what I'm going for.

I’d love to join in too!

Thanks for the comments so far! Have edited the original post to reflect some of them.

@Heavenbat Well if this event played out more like a collab, you could still join in because you’d be able to submit characters without an intro comic, just like in invitationals!

@Rivana Ruler of the Underworld would be a wicked title. And thanks for bringing up the fact that not all vampires would be undead. I definitely need to settle on a definition that includes them all, I’m just not sure how to word it yet!! Perhaps since Raven is classed as a creature that is usually undead, she can be included?

@yarnwitch Thanks for pointing out toons, it made me realise I didn’t actually give base definitions for either side! I’ve updated the OP to hopefully clear things up :)

THE INCUBATOR / Re: Cy and the Lads

Here are some WIPs of her intro! I'm happy with the layout of the first two pages, now it comes down to rendering and that weird angle I chose for the last panel on the first page :/ Page 3 is meant to show her leaping out and possibly swiping at him, but I'm not sure how to arrange that either, and the last page is just a barely legible mess I'm not gonna post it at all just yet.

It's time for Incubator 2: Electric Boogaloo! Wanna get this girl in by November, or January if I decide to commit to my boy's BB haha

Years ago, a space-faring trophy hunter landed on a planet with blue soil, and huge fungal blooms that would tower above most Earth-native trees. Before he could swing the rifle off his back, a winged, orange creature fell from one such fungus, crashing into the dirt beside him; its large eyes and small horns betrayed its young age. Carefully, he scooped it up… and took it home, where he stuck it in a tiny cage and used it as an exotic guard dog, trained to kill intruders and do tricks for his guests. Until one day, after years of waiting for the right moment, she escaped and got her revenge. Enter, Efrier.
Efrier is an alien of few words – she’s sentient and certainly able to talk, but likes to wait and learn the situation before engaging. She’s also self-conscious of her stilted speech, and can get frustrated by long conversations. She is honest and straight to the point with what she does say, and if she’s not interested in you, she will simply leave or ignore you – Efrier is not rude, but just doesn’t care much for pleasantries and small talk.
If her escape is any indication, she’s strategic and good at playing the long game. She may slip out of anger though, especially when confronted with humans, whom she resents. She’s smart enough not to randomly attack them on sight, but it doesn’t take much for her to justify hurting one. On the other hand, she will happily interact with and befriend other aliens/monster-y folk.

> Efrier is a powerful, endurance flyer, but not very manoeuvrable. On land she is generally slow, but can run quickly for short bursts.
> Hollow horns and an inflatable throat make her capable of producing extremely loud calls, including infrasonic sounds, as long-distance communication. The latter are felt more than heard, and can cause strange effects for those too close – hallucinations, intense fear, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, shortness of breath and/or speech impairments. Standing right next to her while she calls can burst eardrums or cause internal damage.
> Although she is colourblind, she has another form of vision up her sleeve – thermal. Her front and last pairs of eyes can see heat.
> Her dark wings can flash patterns, much like a cuttlefish. She has not learned to communicate with them properly, but when feeling strong emotions they will light up in a flurry of pale stripes or waves.

Her lips are not very mobile, so currently she cannot easily form sounds needing a lot of lip movement, such as “o”, so they may become “flattened”. Otherwise she will stutter with them as well as long words. E.g. “Could I have one margherita pizza” may be spoken as “Could I have wuh-n margah- margherita… pizza.” Feel free to play it up or tone it down as needed, as I understand it can break the flow of dialogue. However, keep in mind she is also a careful speaker and will specifically phrase things in ways that are easier to say (I only used the sentence above to demonstrate all her speech quirks – she would probably say “a plain pizza” instead).

GO FOR BROKE! / Cy Tries Art
« on: Oct 23, 2019, 01:28 AM »
Hi my name's Cy, I mostly do shitty pencil sketches not fit for posting and don't know a consistent style is (:

Here are some more recent, acceptable works of mine:

July 24th, 2018

August 31st, 2018

January 15th, 2019

April 3rd, 2019

ArtsandGoodies just brought up the fact that many vampires can change their shape too, so which side should they be on? In my opinion, they would still be undead because they are vampires first and the shifting is just one of their powers as opposed to their whole shtick, but it’s a good question so I’d be interested to know your opinions on this as well! Additionally, should there be a reason they can’t use this ability in the event, to make the sides clearer and spice things up a bit?

A few months ago, an idea came up in the Discord chat of an event featuring vampires vs werewolves, which expanded to undead vs shifters. I was pretty hype for the idea so I figured, hey, maybe I could try organising it. So I wanna see if enough people would be interested before I see about talking to the admins and officially planning something :)

After some consideration, I think for this event only beings that were originally human, or are a variant of human, should be counted. As there was already a Monster Mash I don’t want to cast the net too wide, but I also wanted to more inclusive than simply vamps and wolves. So with that in mind, here is how I would define the groups:

SHIFTER - a person who is able to change into an animal
UNDEAD - a person who has been killed and reanimated*

As per request, here’s the list of people who have shown interest so far:
  • Shen
  • BuggyPumpkin
  • Badger
  • Astrodile
  • Flytee
  • Heavenbat
  • Rivana
  • yarnwitch
  • Elyan
  • Dechado

(*I’m still really not sure about how I’d define this myself, so this definition is very much subject to change)

Other questions for discussion, if you’d like the idea of such an event:

1) Would you prefer a Retribution-style long haul event, with individual battles and a point system, OR a huge collab event, with several people on the shifter side and several on the undead, each working on one big comic together?

2) What kind of stakes would you like to see? One suggestion was winner turning the other side for example (though whether that would be permanent or not is also up for debate).

3) What beings do you think should be counted for each side? For instance, would a ghost be counted as undead, or do they have to have a physical form to be included? Should only single form shapeshifters be included, or those with multiple forms as well?

4) Any name suggestions for the event? Shifters vs Undead isn’t the catchiest title out there imo XD I think something including “Children of Night” might be cool.

I’m currently in a battle, but if this is still going after I’d love to offer up my thief, Gold. Lawless of course!

Also god I love how he's actually like.. very average or weak even in his usual form but the fact that he can switch and merge the others ones like before you can blink make him as slippery as Proteus and really bumped up his threat score haha

Really nice design! I agree with Paper as well, having a wooden sword would be a neat tie in to his past and how he fights currently. Are you planning an intro comic btw or submitting him to invitationals?

VOID Characters and Comics / Shapeshifters of Void
« on: May 11, 2019, 07:50 AM »
Had an idea for an area of Void where shapeshifters like to hang out, maybe a bar or something, so I was interested to see what kinda shifters are around and thought I'd compile a list! I'm defining shapeshifter as a character with a human/ish form and animal form. NPCs counted too! Since Werewolf Things is already, well, a thing, I'm not gonna include em here. People that turn into wolves of their own accord are all good though ;v;b

So far I got:

Ghost - Rooster
Gold - Cat
Kubo - Fox (retired)

VOID Characters and Comics / Re: Void Characters song playlist
« on: May 07, 2019, 01:02 PM »
Bc I'm a Fool (TM) who likes making life difficult for myself, instead of throwing the 30 odd songs that suit him in a playlist, I tried to make a limited song, journey type of playlist? Like a progression from lost child to "hey crime is fun" to the guilt and fear he tries so hard to hide lmao
