+1 for "I had no problem understanding LeWolcfred's work and loved it", for posterity

if it wasn't already obvious

What a bittersweet cap to the TTT thang.

It was fun everyone, thank you for all the kind words you've said, and yes, I do regret not coloring everything, but time and health limitations permit only so much.

Fred and Wol: Your comic was absolutely amazing, and the premise and layout of the special page was really good. I like how you used the soulless husk concept, haha. It's great work, and it was fun fight you guys. I just hope I did your characters justice.

Now for serious critique!

This was extremely challenging for me to pick a side, because I love both stories. Ultimately it boiled down to execution and scope which led to the victor in my eyes.

Wolcik/LeFred: Wolcik, your art with those colors are nearly perfect. The color choices were, anyway, I think you could have stood to have a bit stronger contrasts to break away the muddiness that occurs here and there. I'm curious to learn how you guys went developed this comic, like the surveys we all did for Round 1. LeFred, I think you already know what I would bring up 'cause nearly everyone else did; the page setup didn't bother me enough to be put off by it, but it definitely took a second to figure out how to navigate it. If you could have gotten those arrows and extra titles inbetween the panels, it probably woulda been no sweat for everyone else to read and may have saved you some points to your score, but alas. The story was top notch as usual. Thanks very much for the surprise significant Arena cameo, the love is mutual I swear~

Hiemie/Tinman: You did it again; this conclusion is just as satisfying and I can't wait to see what new stories spring from this event. Hiemie, I assume you did all the colors, they look great on your lines, but for some reason I'm not feeling they're doing much for Tin's lines, which while great as alwyas, could really use some color to help see through some of the crazy detail-filled panels. Page 15 was a great homage to the contestants of the tournament, someone needs to color that panel (who is it that Arena is black-locked with?) I'm very impressed with the writing of the fishboy at the climax, for some reason, it's chilling. I'm really glad you came back, Hiemie. Tinman, alls I knows is that Arena and Toro must meet in the future~

Great job both teams!

Puzzle- As a huge admirer of your work, both as a Tourney Champ and a traditional-experimentalist, I greatly appreciate your commentary. I usually use Pitt pens of 5 sizes and one fatter brush, this time I had to do about half my pages with a brace on so my line flows are lessened then usual, a bit shorter strokes due to lock-up. I know a few of my influences use brushes to ink so I reckon its time I took that leap. Thank you so much for pointing that out to me, I strive for fluidity and anything that builds towards that, I'm game for. As for watercoloring my lines, flat washes inducing that Moebius look is what I hope to achieve doing my own colors going forward.

Neeners- Thanks for the crits! I was trying to achieve a more realistic anatomy for Mr.Awesome's musclebound bod and science fiction flick WIDESCREEN feel for this comic to suit the tone but I realize its more gritty than my past toon styled work, and as divergent in style from Hiemie's as Wolciks is from LeFreds. Technically I'll be more aware of my lines in the future.

LeFred- The choose your own was rad, I love the slightly different conversations in each eventuality, and how you managed to cover a lot of plot points to anticipate our meta plot without having to stick to or commit to a single story or conclusion. I wish you had taken it outside that control room tho, and gotten some more differences in how each choice played out- as some feel very similar and thus end up in the same place. As always your comical bodies and expressions steal the show for me and you took so many cues from our plot, you clearly did you research. Hopefully we did your Lady Luck some justice and gave Mr.Awesome the appropriate hair treatment this time around! Much respect to you Sirs.

wolcik & lefred- initially I was turned off by the HUGE PAGE. I got to it, groaned and left. but I came back and got through it so I could comment. it wasn't bad at all, and I actually didn't get confused navigating, but I really really wish it was formatted differently! like a class choose-your-own adventure I guess. it was a fun read though! I think I mention this often but the colors are still kinda muddy and ick, and weird poses and anatomy that need to be watched out for in the future.

hiemie & tinman- fun wrap up! I like the colors, it's a shame time didn't allow for all of it to be colored. the different page sizes across the whole comic was a tiny bit distracting, but not a huge deal. I'm with puzzlething about your lines as well, tinman. they do look "scratchy" in places, and I wonder why there's not more bold, single strokes happening.

LeWolcik -

Dudes, you got allllll my creative points, that was sick. I'm not really into surreal stuff, but the idea you went with here and how it fit the characters is great. It's like we're seeing the world through Captain Awesome's mind and he's just making up a story as he goes. Sprinkling humor throughout the comic really helped too, it kept me feeling grounded and interested in the odd setting. Hiemie's ridiculous blank face as he does horrible stuff to Captain Awesome was so great. So so great.

You shouldn't have submitted this comic without filling in all the gutter text though. That text is vital to the way the comic is read, and it's implementation being inconsistent adds an unintentional layer of confusion to the whole thing, and disguises how cool your layout actually is.

I think if you knew you were going to be drawing so many zoomed-out camera shots, you should've kept the faces simple and clean. In many of the panels, your expressions get sort of lost or weakened.

Hieman   -

UNGGGHHH GOD I AM DREADING CRITIQUING YOU GUYS. You're both so much better than me that when I open your comic for like 5th time going, "Okay lets find something wrong" I rapidly deflate too "Oh my god, who do I think I am to critique this".

Hiemie I love your watercolors, they're bold and whimsical, but I like them much more with your lines than Tinman's. I feel like whenever you try to render form on his figures you end up flattening and/or simplifying them. I would have liked it more if you had just used some simple washes to describe colour and let Tinman's lines do the work of describing form. I also don't like how much unintentionally exposed paper there is. It happens a lot between forms, like you're afraid of bleeding or overlapping. It makes your stuff look less professional, and weakens the strength of spots where you intentionally expose the paper to create highlights.

Tinman, you have such an amazing sense of motion in like everything you do. The motion in your lines, the form in the characters is super dynamic and flowing, even the composition of each page. You never just "make a page", there's so much careful attention to how everything relates to each other to create one image at the end.

The only I can find to criticize is that your linework seems to get oddly scratchy sometimes, like they're made of many smaller lines, which is weird because at the same time they're so graceful. Are you using something like a technical pen to ink it? While I've seen plenty of people do amazing, dynamic stuff with technical pens, I'd really love to see your stuff inked  completely with a flexible nib or brush. Oh man, with your amazing sense of motion a brush would just be killer.  If I'm totally wrong about your tools I'm super sorry.

I feel like everytime I write critiques I focus too much on talking about the negatives and just take for granted that everyone in the world should know how in awe I am. So let me just make sure all 4 of you guys know I am totally in awe of all you. Because I totally am. We should make out.

Y'all just need to learn how to read.
I mean... hum...
I was going to had little arrows, but "deadlines" and "scrambling around jst to get that dumb page up" got in the way (didn't even get to put all the transition texts...)There was also going to be margins between the pages to seprate them more clearly and all... anyway, sorry about that.
But yeah, you're just supposed to go left or down willy-nilly as you fancy and get a story no matter what.

Hiemie-Tinman. I certainly did not see that ending coming. Fucking great job this whole tournament!

I'll get you next time.

Shen: We were happy to bring it to you tho it was a marathon race to the finish line, tourneys are truly endurance tests and this round pushed us to the limit. Seeing the master plan come to fruition and all the chaos our opponents and collaborators brought into our mix was a true joy.

Hats: Familiar with Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" are we?

Bobo:Thanks for your continued encouragement and collaboration. You're a true brother in arms and it was a pleasure doing battle with you along the way. Thanks for adding to the fabric of our story with your tale and for fostering such positive feedback to everyone as always.

Pyras: Had to tip my hat to all the WARRIORS who toughed it out this tourney, so many I wanted to cross swords with but never had the time or page real estate. Hinting at the wars that might've been and may yet be!

Jiisuri: Hiemie and I are very musically inclined and inspired in our lives and it influences the comics enormously, hence the orchestral soundtracks throughout our rounds, I feel they help set the mood and operate on more sensory inputs than sight alone. We're working on scratch n sniffs and taste-testers for next battle. STAY TUNED TONGUES!

how to read page 4: You start with the top left panel block, then move either right or down, based on the choice you make which you can see inbetween each of the panel blocks. You keep going either down or right to reach the end of the story. There are two endings, one of them being a gag or bad ending. There are (I believe) 9 different ways the story can be told, not including the gag/bad ending.

wolcik and lefred, I too got a little confused at that big huge page, I couldn't figure out how to read it ^^; Is it a choose your own adventure? It seemed like it was somewhat linear but I couldn't tell in what direction. anyhow, it was drawn very well and I liked the gag on the last page!
hiemie and tinman... I just... HOW DO I WORDS that was so amazing I can't even describe it, I'm actually sorta glad we lost last round now lol so that I could read how this awesome story ended up! what a finale! I am just EXPLODING with how great that came out! Bravo, you guys!

TLDR: Fucking great comics from both teams.  Yes, you too, LeFred.  That comic was brilliant.  Especially the CYOA page!  Talk about novel and yet functional, damn.

Bobo: Jiisuri: It's a choose-your-own-adventure page. The text between panel sections are the choices you can make. That said, I do agree that you guys could have made that a little easier to understand with arrows or something to help the flow of the page work better for us.

Yeah this took me a few minutes to figure out how the groupings were.  I wasn't sure at first if we were supposed to read the groups up to down, left to right or skip around, etc.  I got it after awhile though.  Though I'm not fully convinced it was choose your own adventure?  It felt like multiple realities converging or something.

Hmn yes, I did figure it was some experimental risk they were taking. Indeed, could have been clearer.

I now have a theme music that will play in my head for days to come.

Pretty sad at Lefred/Wolcik's one though, particularly that one huge page of many pages in one huge.... thing. Couldn't figure what group to read next. :(

Havign problems uploading a page, sending it to Red and Bobo now

'DIT: I have now sent my missing fourth page to Red, Bobo and Toast in two different ways just to be sure. There should be a record-setting number of five pages.

I'll waddle back to my coffin, now. Resurect me when it's princess time.
