spit spat, time to chat / Re: 30 Characters
« on: Nov 03, 2014, 06:36 AM »
Let's turn it up a notch:

Submit a new character to VOID every day in November. :D

Ooh, see now THAT sounded tempting...

But alas, we're already three days in & no one acted. I'm getting my cintiq back on wednesday & after finishing up a few jobs, I think it'd be wise for me to plan on banking more of the web thing I've got happening. Otherwise I would.

It would be feasible if it wasn't all just one person.  like the entire community pick dates and somebody creates a character to be submitted/created on that day instead one person making 30 characters that they are likely never going to use.

but still this requires like a month's preparation considering how slow some of us draw (me)

That, seems kind of pointless. I mean it'd just a character drive for the site & an inane chore on a personal level. The whole point of the challenge is to push your own creativity. One & maybe two characters over the course of a month isn't going to strain anybody. 30's where it's at. And unused characters could be donated as NPCs.

Digging up old threads.

Haven't heard anything about this going on this year but November is when it happens. And I think people here were doing a lot better than over at the "official" site. It's a fun exercise if people are interested. As always, I was saying I wasn't going to do it, but there's a tiny bit of me that might say fuck it & try. Anybody else?

THE INCUBATOR / Re: Fife Pine

With the name, I want to make atcq references but feel they'll be lost on you.

The two stand outs to me right now are the bg & the text. with that establishing shot, it feels like you drew eveything on a diagonal instead of actual perspective. getting the lines right will sell it better. with the text, as it is, it's sitting huge, the justification seems awkward, & I think you could find a more suitable font. And in that last panel, the way you have it laid out seems odd. Rule of thumb is left to right going down. the girls balloon sits lower than his response, which seems off.

there's a lot of optimization you could do with the actual layout to make it more concise.like the same medium shots in the bottom tier of the first oage & top of the second. they don't feel necessary & it gets monotonous/same-y to keep showing the same angle like that.

I'm also getting the impression that you're a little scared of drawing hands & avoiding them strategically. But know that in actually getting them in there is how to improve them.

Firstly, the word "gnovel" is the dorkiest thing I think I've seen for a bit. So stop with that.

Secondly, the greatest strides being made aren't by the big two. So when you post something kvetching & that's all it's focusing on it's myopic. "Industry" talk is the WORST talk, but made even worse when people can't see past the two sputtering, monopolizing IP factories. So it's a lame article.

Thirdly, not THREE months go by without a "respected" (old, white guy) creator saying something racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, etc, or like Brian Wood, revealed (publicly) to be a total sleazebag. "But THIS ARTICLE YOU GUYS! Real conversation starter." It comes off as tone deaf, like "the industry" in general, that a lame article like this is your tipping point & not all of that other, far more egregious shit that has kept happening. I feel your call to arms here, of all places, is silly. For a lot of the problems it has had, being progressive has never been an issue with Void. Probably because everyone here's already of the same mind on the issue.

"Let's fix this problem I only bother to read about every other decade or so. here, read this article focusing solely on only 2 publishers, & the zero solutions I can personally offer on the situation BUT FIX IT YOU GUYS."

no shit this is a problem. how are you shocked by reading about this in comics when society at large still hasn't solved these problems? but your call to action here insisting we fix it is kind of strange. firstly because if you're really that passionate about this, why only read up on it after long intervals of what, burying your head under a rock? but also, void has always seemed to have a fairly diverse crowd of creators for the length of time I've been on the site. that was one of the aspects I've really liked about it.

Some final tweaks are going to be needed but I'm pretty happy with where it is. But right now I need to move onto other pages.

thanks, that's super helpful & the kind of thing I was looking for. I just finished the flats last night & I think I know a couple of tweaks I could do to get it more askew without having to spend a lot of time redrawing. if it takes me more than 20 minutes, I'll revert back. I think the problem stemmed from needing a reference image for the angle & settling for something close & not tweaking it enough. but it makes perfect sense about the depth.  thanks!

EDIT: Oh & sorry. At the moment, I'm building up a buffer to a certain point in the story Im pretty certain is going to happen around pg 20. I'm hoping it'll start with the new year but I'm not making promises not fully aware of my work schedule ovrr the next three months.

thanks! I appreciate it.
pretty far along with flatting it but I'm a little unsure about the scale/proportions of the environment the more I look at it. tried flipping it, but fresh eyes could help. any suggestions?

I just leerily watched the movie Detention on the suggestion of a friend. I still don't know if it was good but it was much better than any movie that has Dane Cook playing a high school principal really has the right to be. While it seems like it's going to be a short attention span slasher it takes sudden left turns & starts taking tropes from a lot of other high school-centric movies. Basically it was like a mix of Scream, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, & Charles Burn's Black Hole. With Time travel & UFOs. It'll probably take a rewatch.

Thanks, Stefan!

Since it's all been characters lately, here's a page from the webcomic I'm working on.

Took a while but the thing that took the most time was trying to get the perspective right with it being a hill & redrawing the cars a couple of times. Don't intend to get this detailed with EVERY page, but settings are kind of important in this one so I'll spend time setting them up. Colors coming next.

63
raid 2's tied for my movie of the year so far with the rover, though i'll need a rewatch on both. while the original's still more concise & better, one of the many selling points of berandal is the live action superjail riot that happens about a half hour in.

i liked ric & morty. a lot. any show that has the same lorenzo music conversation i've had in real life is a good show.

speaking of voice actors, netflix just got that i know that voice documentary. cheaply done & not enough billy west for my liking but i really dug it & mostly just always dug a lot of those people. its on youtube as well now too

I got a paying gig so I had to back out of the 30 Characters thing. But I'm still doing a couple more for the year & might continue doing one a week for 2014 maybe. In the interim, I got a little bored today so I whipped this up. Perspective's fucked & the shadows are a three second job, but these are just the one's I've got colored.

Are we going to post these here or our own threads or resurrect that old jam thread?

Is it cool if I just post mine in the thread like last year?

You can do whatever makes you happy. I just know people always get upset about missing the sign up so I figured I'd just point it out. Whether you post them here, there, both or whatever, I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got.

Awesome! Go forth & kick ass!

I was on the fence with doing it this year but since I'm holding to this goal of having 52 new characters by the end of the year & I'm only on #13, I see it as an excuse to catch up.

Don't forget to introduce yourself after you're signed up.

I know a couple of people jammed on this last year here but the official challenge is open for sign ups between now & Thursday. Everyone here is not only more than capable from an artistic & creative standpoint, I think it's a good way to promote yourself & Void too. So if you had any intention in doing it, go sign up.
