Jake was kind of a loser. He couldn\'t hold down a job, his girl left him because he \"wasn\'t going anywhere,\" and he could hardly pay rent on his shitty apartment.
One day he saw an ad for clinical testing in the paper. It was good pay for pretty much no work, so he took it. When he got to the address, he didn\'t find a hospital or clinic, but a small warehouse. That should have set the alarms off in his head, but there was easy money in it for him and he wasn\'t the type to overanalyze a situation.
Upon entering, he met the three scientists who hired him and immediately began giving him genetic treatments and conducting tests. As the weeks passed, he started to subtly change. The money kept flowing, though, so he kept going. Well, as he learned later, these scientists had been working on a genetic enhancement project for the government which had been scrapped when the dangers of it had become clear. These three scientists refused to give up such promising work, though, and were finishing their research in secret. They had altered Jake\'s physiology systems, giving him enhanced physical abilities. However, one genetic modification gave him an adrenal gland that was always releasing enhanced adrenaline, prevented him from ever sleeping.
Although he was very alert, the lack of sleep took a toll on him, and soon became unbearable. He demanded that the scientists reverse the changes. They agreed, but said they needed time to prepare. When he came back the next day, they were gone, and his only choices were to try to track them down or to find someone else who could help him...
Jake never sleeps. Because of this, he needs no home. He searches for the scientists continuously, never needing rest. Although he is alert, he is completely burned out from the lack of sleep, and life has become very surreal and disorienting.
His body’s abilities have been enhanced to a superhuman level and he fights in a loose and uncontrolled style. His body’s highly increased output requires a metabolic rate far higher than a normal human’s, and he has to eat huge amounts of food regularly.
