Hey, I was directed here for specific help. I'm trying to improve my drawing skills, on clothing in particular. General backgrounds are also a necessary skill I need to beef up, but clothing is my number one priority at the moment. Any and all help in this matter would be much appreciated.

Clothing is a complicated thing because there is no one way to draw cloth. Different materials produce different kinds of folds. For example leather isn't going to fold like cotton, spandex isn't going to crease like denim. The folds also follow whatever action is taking place. My best suggestion would be to examine clothing in movies, magazines or *gasp* do life study in some outdoors location find a way to simplify it, incorporate it into your own work and then PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. The internet is also a perfect resource for finding clothing reference, so use and abuse it!!!

As for getting better at backgrounds, again it requires a lot of personal observation and practice. I do keep various amounts of reference materials, and I have many folders on my computer dedicated to specific locations, but you can't just rely on reference. There has to be a part of you that understands how backgrounds function in your artwork. The only way for you to get that understanding is if you practice drawing backgrounds constantly. So when you're drawing a snazzy new character design, dedicate the same amount of time to practicing backgrounds in various perspectives and locations. Seek out some basic perspective tutorials online. Just google search "one point perspective" and "two point perspective" and a gazillion links will pop up. I actually made a quick perspective tutorial on these forums, but the images are outdated and have disappeared (sorry ill have to fix at some point =P).

ONe quick thing though: What about scripting or planning? I know it depends on the artist and how they interpret, but to go from script to your first piece of thumbnail gooey goodness, there're a lot of steps.

Weeerd I was thinking about that, but the problem is this page is coming from my personal project. The script is really loose, since a lot of things I leave flexible while I'm thumbnailing. Its probably not the best representation of a script =P

I could post a process from a page on the other book I'm working on, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the script from it. The script doesn't really belong to me and what not =/

If somebody else is working from a rigid script and is allowed to post from it then maybe they could do a process too. I'm all into the idea of lots of people putting up their pages from thumbs to finished!

If you like, download the comic Kraken by Jordi Bernet and Antonio Segura! They're really hard to find, but they're fantastic comic material. Bernet has excellent flow and panel composition and perfect dry brush technique. If you're offended by nudity, sex, violence I wouldn't suggest downloading. Its okay Jed! Right now I have to admit that I'm totally diggin the Andy Kubert Grant Morrison Batman.

Even more so I love love love THE BOYS by Garth Ennis and Derrick Robertson

I think the title got kicked off of Vertigo for being a little too crass, but Dynamite picked it up and its going strong. Issue 8 came out this week! The story is about a group who act as watchdogs for superheros who are out of control. Heres a synopsis from Newsarama because I'm not the best at explaining things!

"The Boys are a team of five super-powered operatives who work for a secret department within the U.S. government. It's their job to monitor and investigate superhero behavior, they gather intelligence- i.e. dirt- on them, and occasionally to use it against them. Just as the C.I.A. has had a use for the Mafia, Sadaam Hussein, and Columbia's FARC terrorists (to name a few), so they also need superheros. Sometimes they need them on a leash. Sometimes they have to put them down. The Boys are the people who do the job.”

Garth Ennis is in Preacher form for this book. You can really tell he's having fun with it, and he isn't holding back! I've seen better art from Derrick Robertson, but its still a solid read. I ENJOY IT!!!

OH AND I HATE WHAT THEY'RE DOING WITH X-MEN ENDANGERED SPECIES!!! Seriously the issue 200 event comic came out this week, and its pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to read. They decided to divide the art on this issue between Chris Bachalo and Humberto Ramos. Bachalo's work was clean and intelligible, but Ramos seriously sucked. His pacing is so jerky and abrupt. It would jump from heavy dialogue to sudden street fighter face off. Zero transition!!! Almost no backgrounds on his pages..... even his cover was crappy!! We had 3 alternate covers and Ramos' was the least bought and most complained about. AUGH if you can't draw Wolverine badass you shouldn't be drawing an X-men comic!!!!!

Popbot is like a collection of Pinups with a common theme.  Some of his actual comic work is alot easier to follow, like Metal Gear Solid or previews from that new Tank Girl Comic look like it'll be easy to read.

Naaaw Wood attempts comics in popbot too. I have it in front of me and there is dialogue and some form of loose panel structure, but its really really confusing. His metal gear books were totally unreadable also. I have no clue how your figured them out Johnny, but I give you cookie points for it.

Wei I think I saw that book before and it was a little more readable, but it still isn't really my cup of tea. He's one of those artists that totally gets away with sucking at backgrounds by plopping color all over the place. Like Templesmith... when I'm reading fell sometimes I have to take a break because I get so pissed off by how lazy he is.
