spit spat, time to chat / Arquebus Dance Preorder
« on: Aug 19, 2015, 12:42 PM »
So I've been super dead this year on EnterVoid because I was working on a personal project with a friend.

There's a series we both like called Nobunagun, but the series isn't popular enough to get published in America. Although it's been recommended to publishers, the problem is the lack of fan base. We decided to make an anthology to give the fan base a little push. There were two indie zines previously made, each dedicated to two different characters from the series, published in Japan. My friend decided to take on the third one, and chose the third character, Sio Ogura, who is the main girl in the series. She and I got a bunch of artists to contribute some work for this thing, and voila!

Preorder at: http://celebistar.storenvy.com/products/14167272-sio-ogura-anthology

You can watch the series here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/nobunagun (episode 6+7 are fillers)

I'm not sure how to shrink thumbs or anything, so here is just a ton of links that have the same advertisement:

I'm sure practically all of you aren't going to be interested, but it would be super helpful if you could spread the word around and share the links if you can. Thank you!

spit spat, time to chat / Who wants to help advertise?
« on: Apr 21, 2014, 09:32 PM »
Hello, I found a batch of Void postcards that I made to advertise the site. If anyone is interested in volunteering to take a few and hand out to someone who might be interested in the future, please contact me.

As you can see, this happy guy is holding one:

Design:

I'll mail you a small batch of five to seven postcards. Doesn't matter if you're across the country.

THE INCUBATOR / New Character: Barberella
« on: Apr 19, 2014, 11:09 PM »
Meet Void City's new barber, Barberella:
work in progress:

She's a demon who possessed a pair of barber scissors and is out to give the citizens of Void City new haircuts. She'll only battle scar matches.

Name: Barberella (no last name)
Age: Her human/demon form is only a few weeks old, however the demon who possessed it is much, much older.

Personality: She's really friendly unless you refuse a haircut. Then she becomes psychotic and will do anything to get that hair styled. It doesn't matter what haircut the client wants, she cuts it HER WAY. Her physical 'stage' is how you determine her mood (stage 0 being happy, stage 1 being mad/excited/determined, and stage 2 as in going nuts). Sometimes people freak out when they realize she has four arms (she keeps two of them folded behind her back sometimes), but she's used to the reactions people get from that, and doesn't mind.
Likes: Good hair cuts
Hates: Bad haircuts, and bad hair days
Abilities:
-Incredible talent for styling hair.
-Since she has four arms, she's a fast worker too.
-She can make her opponent's hair suddenly grow when she snaps her fingers.
-Her specialty includes hair wash, perms, braids, shaving the head and face, trims, and hair dyes

Currently making the final character design sheet. Look forward to more :)

Collaborations / Illustration Promo Pieces: Who wants in?
« on: Feb 26, 2014, 10:58 AM »
As someone who popped out of Illustration, creating promo pieces are a key to getting my name out. Editorial Illustration is a bit different from comics, since most of it is a stand-alone illustration.

Anyhow, I am giving the opportunity to anyone who wants to dive in to this business or at least try this experience once in their life to help me out, as postage and costs for stuff is always cheaper when people chip in.

Here's some info before the rest of the details:

What do you mean a 'promo piece'?
Promotion pieces is basically a postcard with your work that an editor or art director can keep for future reference. They often have binders at hand full of these things by different artists. When they need a specific illustration, they look for a piece they like, and contact you. Basically, like a business card for them to keep, but instead of a tiny 2.5x3 card, it's a 4x6 with an actual image on it.

Illustration? Is that like a comic?
Well, it COULD be. But for the sake of clarification for most of the addresses I'm mailing to, they are newspaper, magazine, and book publications (a number of them are children's book publishers). What you see in editorial illustration is usually an image that depicts an IDEA. Not necessarily an amazingly hyper realistic image, sometimes simple is good. But it represents an idea, a topic, a situation, etc. Sometimes wacky/cartoony is the way to go.

Okay. now, back to topic.

What's going to happen:
1) Everyone sends me an image file (4.25x6.25, 300dpi), gives me their name, email, and website.
2) I get them all printed at the same site and mailed to me (shipping is cheaper when you order more)
3) I have a book full of publishers; I will take everyone's work, and categorize them into pieces most suited for certain publication companies (for example, if your work is themed in Japanese culture, then I will look for cultural magazine publication company). Everyone gets fifty postcard prints, and I will categorize them in sixty-eighty envelopes (depending on theme)
4) Purchase postage, the promo pieces will all be grouped into envelopes and mailed out. DONE.

And some more questions to clarify:

How soon will I get a job from this?
LOL that's a hilarious joke! Well, it depends, really. It might be years it might be never. The thing is that now that the promo piece is sent to them, the editor might keep or toss it, but if they keep it they will know your art for the future. If what they're looking at is what they're interested in, they'll contact you. You'll never know, it's different for everyone.

What's the approximate cost?
I'm hoping to keep it so it's less than $20 per person. But I need to have at least three people to make this happen.

What kind of art is good for this?
Usually illustration is looking for provoking ideas, so if your art looks UNIQUE (like it has a nice 'style' that not everyone can emulate), if it is THOUGHT PROVOKING (like it displays an idea or concept without having the need of a verbal explanation), or it provides a strong sense of EMOTION (like your work is very dark, or it's very sad, kinda hard to describe this one). Basically, a drawing of someone standing up straight is most likely not going to get you anywhere, but a drawing of someone drinking coffee would be more likely. When choosing your art piece, please make sure it's something you enjoy drawing or you're comfortable with. If you made an awesome drawing of a monster, but you hate drawing monsters, that is definitely not a good piece to turn in. However if you love dinosaurs, your promo piece could be of a dinosaur--maybe an editor who is looking for an artist to draw them for a children's book would be interested.

Extra: Some of you might be masters of typography or vector work, that's totally fine. It's like the rage now anyways.

I do two different styles, what if I want to do both?
I'm going to limit everyone to three promotional pieces at tops. But they better be very different. Yes you need to pay extra for printing.

Waaah! I can't choose which piece, can you help me?
Yes, you can ask me.

I'm not in the United States, is that okay?
Yes, but just to inform you, the only place I'm mailing out these things is in the United States. Printed postcards will be sent to my house, so there is no need to anything like international shipping. There have been many situations where publishers will contact across the globe. The wonderful thing about freelance illustration is that most of it is digital information, so contact and work can be done via internet nowadays.

I have my own postcards, and i don't want you to print them for me. Is that okay?
Yep, just send me a message and mail them to me. I need fifty per illustration.

So many publishers/editors! Are you insane?
Yes. But no, on this topic. The chances of an editor looking and being interested is slim, and just like a website, one mailed out piece is only like one pagehit. You need a LOT of pagehits to get anywhere.

I don't think my art is ready, is it okay?
If you're not ready, don't do it. I am trying to keep these promotional pieces in the envelope looking as professional as possible.

Due date: July 20, 2014
*Yes it is perfectly fine to use a drawing you've done already. Preferably nothing over a year ago. A few months should be enough time to make one, two, or even three if you want. Doesn't matter if it's b/w or color.

Please post here if you're interested.  If you're not committed but still interested, just say so. Don't want to screw my information too much.

I will send more info and request for contact if you are completely committed.

Jobs / Collaborators for Non-Anime Visual Novel
« on: Jul 28, 2013, 11:02 PM »
After reading some forum threads about how people feel about Non-Anime style visual novels, Brian and I have decided to make one of our own. But we'd like to collaborate with a few others to make this work going.

The purpose of this game is to make a non-anime style visual novel that isn't a dating sim either. Something entertaining and unique. Currently, our plot revolves around MMORPG life with the main character. To be fair on story idea, I want to make several plot endings, and if you have an idea for a plot ending I'll implement it in the story somehow.

Currently, Brian is the Character Artist and I am main story scriptwriter and background/cutscene artist. We're currently looking for:

-music
-programming with RenPy. If you've never done it and you're willing to learn it on your own like a boss, go ahead and post anyways.
-Animator
-anything else you may be interested in

If you think you can contribute somehow, just post here. And a few samples of professional work if possible. Currently this position is UNPAID, although if you're very very desperate for cash, I can take out of my near-nothing wallet and send you an 'investment' of cash, but you won't get money from the crowdfunding that comes afterwards, which will pay that back for me. Expected time of at least half of the completion? December.

Imagine a video about void, its past and present, and what happens in void, and narrated by Underwood: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1QIlDkhckJR

Ideas, things you want him to say in it? Video ideas? etc. what do you want in it? >:D

spit spat, time to chat / A little Advertisement (revived)
« on: Mar 31, 2013, 10:57 AM »
Remaking this topic:

Some of us were chatting online last night about making ads for Void. I'd like some help, input, stuff like that.

Who can help out?
-hopefully someone with graphic design experience.
-someone with good writing skills to make something short and catchy to draw attention in text
-someone who has input on something that should be written in the ad

What can you do?
-design one yourself and post here
-write some text that maybe some of us could copy and paste into our own design for the ad
-print out a design and show it to people/give it to them/pin on boards

The possibilities
I have a small pile of Void postcard ads, and can mail some to anyone who would like to pass them out at small conventions or comic groupies. Just message me with your address.
If you'd like to design one and get it printed, check out the 'upload info' section here: http://www.overnightprints.com/postcards

And another thing is printable b/w and color fliers that can be handed out of just stapled in local college boards for those interested. As long as the ratio can be split on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper and can easily be trimmed, that's cool. (work must be 300dpi or more)

I got a hold of a color printer, and so I can print out stickers. Non UV or anything, but good enough to look good. Anything that can be trimmed into a square/rectangle on an 8.5x11 piece of printer paper and isn't ink heavy can work. (work must be in 300dpi or more)
After I print them i can mail them to you. or you can print them yourself!

And probably the easiest one is to create a digital ad that everyone can share on tumblr/facebook/other social media.

key ideas to stick on the advertisement:
-what is void?
-the website's address
-why it's awesome
-The logo
-scroll down for Red's style guide, and mentioned http://entervoid.com/images/promo/
-When designing the print sheets, remember to indicate crop marks if you need to cut it at certain spots. Crop marks are in the shape of L or T, or even just a dot, and are usually light grey. The indicate where the blade lands when cutting.

Post your ad on this forum, I'll put it on a list on this post.

Art Jams / Icon Generator Jam~
« on: Mar 10, 2013, 02:40 PM »
okay, so Tofu posted a link to an icon generator:
http://www.icongenerators.net/square.html

It's a flash program that you can use to make custom avatar/icons.

And well, it's freakin addictive. And I made too many but I'm sure all of you are thinking the same thing. SO for this jam, let's just post ones of our characters, or other characters, and see how many varieties of the same character we can all make!

first row: wizzie/nyasu/cue/gray/sasami/mammon
second row: Jimmy/ Vivian/Kuno/Jane/Beo/Satin
third row: Hiemie/Nyle/Gregory/Jessie/Tsumi/Florence
fourth row: Johnny/Hakase/Veronica/Vanity/Lilyfeather/Roy

So go check out the link, and start creating!

I think this is a good exercise to see how different shapes, colors, and lines can make a different face, as well as understanding how placing different parts of the face can make a huge difference--let's see how accurate you can keep it to the original character....or how crazy they can get!

spit spat, time to chat / UPCOMING CONTESTS
« on: Jan 22, 2013, 09:43 PM »
This topic is dedicated to upcoming comic/illustration contests. Every year there are often contests you can submit to. They often cost money, but the moment you get accepted, you're in super great shape.
!
So if you have the money to spare and the time and confidence to submit something, GO FOR IT

Tip:
Know what the hell you're submitting: make sure you got the right theme, and check out past entries to make sure your art would be suitable. If a contest is looking for well rendered images, you probably don't want to send them a black and white vector.

Annual and Quarterly Illustration contests often get thousands of entries, but the 200-400 entries that win are published into giant magazines for art directors. Be wary about it though. Don't overspend for these things if you're not interested.

Comic competitions require a lot of time and willpower, and often only get a handful of winners from thousands of entries they have to read. Winners often get it posted online, and sometimes added in a publication. I've never seen a comic competition that requires payment too. Problem is that the prize money isn't often the greatest in the world.

Either way, post all the drawing contests! Professional, ametuer, comic, student, etc.

Please post:
1)what the contest is called, and site
2)cost, if any
3)due date
4)what theme they are looking for and who is it for (illustration, photo, comic, etc.)

Current contests:

1)Break into comics with Harley Quinn http://www.dccomics.com/node/305151
2)free
3)10:00am PDT on Tuesday, October 1, 2013
4)Artists who want to break into comics.

1) TOP COW TALENT HUNT 2013
2) FREE
3) 1/31/14
4) From the makers of Witchblade and The Darkness, they want to see you work with past versions of their characters (FYI the Witchblade, Darkness, etc. are items passed thru history, with different wielders) Either DRAW a comic based on one of their sample scripts or WRITE a script for a 22-page comic.
