Looks interesting.

Leaves one hungering for more....

I don't hate on any programs....I'm a former Graphic Designer.

This is me w/pen and paper....fairly recent

3
Pineapple, I tend to agree with you about the speed....I tend to be faster using pencil and paper at this point.

Wei, of course I'll share....

Here's a few samples....

I did these awhile back.....this one I believe I drew completely in PS...or MS4..cant remember

This is the colored version....done in PS

These next few were all done in MS4....I probably should go back to MS4. I still can't seem to work with MS5ex which is what I have now.

I do pretty much 99% of all my stuff digitally but I do like using pencils and paper once in a while too. So I'm gonna echo the whole 'versus' argument is dumb.

Gee, Perhaps I didn't phrase the topic the best way.....

I was actually wondering how many people on Void use digital nowadays as opposed to paper and pencil, not advocating one over the other. I plan on using digital for my own work. The fact that I can doodle on the canvas for hours and not waste the paper is more than enough to encourage me to hone my skills with the Wacom alone.

I still very much enjoy drawing in a sketchbook though and am not opposed to using old school comic boards for certain works.

I still notice some Voiders using traditional methods for the comics they post. I personally think there is some benefit to using the paper and pencil still....I dunno....

Any tips for techniques using MS for drafting around the forums?

5
Interesting. I think my "style" comes through ok using MS....just seems to take a bit longer.

6
So you don't pick up pencil, paper and a pad anymore Angie?

I personally think the whole "VERSUS!!!!" mentality of Trad and Digital drawing needs to go away. They're just tools. They both have unique strengths, and they're both capable of awesome things. Artists who frequently proclaim "I can do this by HAND! SUCK IT DIGITAL ARTISTS!" just sound insecure and pretentious to me. An architect isn't any less of an architect because he uses AutoCAD instead of pencils and rulers. A musician isn't any less of a musician because he uses an electric guitar instead of an accoustic guitar.

I use mostly digital because it achieves the look I want and it's more convenient for me, but not because it's "better". As for the learning process, naturally it's still better to learn traditionally. As in any art, it's necessary to learn the basics and origins of the form before you dive into its newer variations, because you have to know what the old stuff does so you can understand what the new stuff is emulating.

Well put. Unfortunately for me it's more than a mentality....it's a (at least mine) reality. I can actually, more often than not, tell the difference when I see examples of the two different "tools" employed.

There is something uniform about the digital way. It can be worked around and minimized with some effort, but perhaps that's what has me hesitant to fully rely on drawing the full comic on the computer unless it's for certain purposes.

Don't get me wrong. I like the potential I see that the digital format has to offer and I thing MS is the best invention for comics since PS added the layer feature. There's just seems to be something missing with the digital way.....

Just thought I'd share my thoughts here. Artist to artist ya'know?

Hey guys. Not sure if there is a thread on this already or not, wouldn't be surprised if there was, but I've been playing around with digital drawing using a decent sized intuos and MS. While I'm not terrible at it, actually I think I can be REALLY good if I truly dedicated myself to it, I think the traditional method is still, by far, superior.

I've seen some very nice work being done totally digital, but I think I can do things faster the old fashioned way then scan it. I do like the paper that the digital method saves, and the ease of panel arrangement/placement, quick modifications and other technical aspects of comic creation, but I think I can do a better quality of art with pencil and paper. Drawing everything on the computer (especially the conceptual/creative phase) seems to be a bit tedious to me at times, though I love the potential.

Is this something anyone else has experienced?

I'm leaning toward a mix of the two....specifically creating the actual designs and concepts traditionally then hoping to do the actual comic in a completely digital way.

I learned the traditional way and believe that It's because of that training that has helped me hasten the learning curve that comes with the digital format.

For some reason I still battle with the two....Thoughts? Pros? Cons?

Sorry If this is a dupe topic:)

I think part of the fun is NOT knowing who you could possibly be fighting next. And when it happens - BAM!! You have 1 day to think of a story and 13 days to draw it. xD

With a bracket you still don't know who you will be fighting next, although the possibilities are narrowed down. Besides, it would be something that has not been seen on this board to my knowledge and I think would make it interesting. It works in major sports and is always exciting. I think the stories would be slightly tighter as well.

Oh...it also keeps the onlookers/fans tightly involved with the tournament's progress.

A tournament bracket should be posted for all the participants to see. I think it might make for stronger storytelling possibilities and maybe introduce a new twist.

Just a thought.

NJHinesJR - Nameless

Boy, how ironic. Nameless is Andre's entire reason for joining this tournament.

I doubt that. How many tournaments have I entered...

Question: Does a highly detailed style of art hinder or help in the digital coloring process?

Re: What Brought You to Void and What Keeps You Here?

So far it's the only proof I have that there is an audience and a future for this peculiar artform that I keep being told is childish and a thing of the past or that it has no worth if I'm not getting paid to do it.

17
I'm interested in creating a character to join Hazard Theater.

What was that ? you want to fight ?

Ah....aggressiveness.

Are you itchin' for one?

18

Well, unless you want Nameless in on it, just go and make a character I guess. If you want Nameless, you  "... must fight other members of the Hazard Theater group in a normal match and show their fighter joining the group. A Beyond battle is also acceptable."

So, hey, good luck with that, go bongos. More comics from you the better.

A new character would be the choice. I know I'm better than what I've shown. I think a fresh start would get my juices flowing creatively.

Scratch what I said about the crosshatching because you did do it differently... but because it's all just lines it was hard to see.  But yeah eh could definitely use some dark shadows, like some shadows fall on the seat he's sitting on and under his legs and such.  He needs some line variation too.  The 'lines' on the arms and the smoky stuff is just filling in some shading but what they could really use is some crosshatching that develops the shape.  There should be some degree of roundness and depth, that would help us figure it out better.

Okay i will remember that wehn i'm doing some drawings next time . You helped me alot . Thank you.

Here are some arm studies. There are alot more palms tho. I promise more arms next time.
Almost all of theese are from a book called ''Drawing Dynamic Hands'' by Burne Hogarth. Also i have never drawn arms and palms seperatly so theese look a bit weird.

I like the desire you have to improve and the willingness to study. I think it's cool that you even take the time to study some of the often overlooked techniques one could consider as the basics of drawing. Keep up that hunger to get better. Also, while Hogarth as well as a number of lesser known books are there for your reference, you also have the best models to study from.....your own two hands. Don't overlook what they can teach.

Question?

Perhaps I should have said "picture this sequentially."

Btw, if anyone wants to draw that, I'd say about a, page of comic plot, I'll consider using the best one as a prologue for the battle. If more detail on character #2 is needed, just check out my opponent's design sheet. As for #1, just a regular and humble, hardworking guy.

Andre vs ...

VC has seen its share of carnage and destruction, marvels and spectacles, rivalries and melees, but its an appreciation of the neglected mundane that gives any metropolis its character.

Man on bus#1 is reading a news periodical. He is blue collar. He makes his living loading vessels that make stops at the harbor. Man on bus#2 is waiting for the next stop, hand grasping the hand rail hanging from the ceiling of the bus. He seems a bit worse for wear. Hes scarred and on edge, on the brink, one might say. He leans over to speak to the other man.

Man on bus#2 -" Hey, uhhh....where does this bus stop?"

His face still buried in the news periodical...
Man on bus#1 - "About a block away from the harbor. Cutter Causeway, I think the street is."

Man on bus#2 - "Thanks...hey ughhh.."

Man on bus#1 - "Yeah?"

Man on bus#2 -" Well, alright, this might sound kinda strange but...ahhh....have you heard any rumors about a mysterious guy running around VC with a sword wearing a skull mask."

Man on bus#1 -" Heh, heh! Every week mack. Do you know his name or anythin? On the front page of this paper alone is a headline talkin bout furries, aliens, and a humanoid crustacean rampage over at P2s."

Man on bus#2 -" Nah...dont know his name....know any good places to get a hot meal and maybe a bourbon?"

Man on bus#1 - "Now that is somethin I can tell ya, mack. Soon as this bus stops, head left past the tackle shop and make the first right. Its an alley way, a few bums and unsavories lurkin round but if you look like ya belong then youll be fine. At the end of the alley theres this hole in a wall of a spot called Bobs Biscuits n Barnacles. It dont sound like much I know, but the atmosphere is down ta earth and the Barnacle Bisque is ta die for."

Man on bus#2 - "Thanks, Ill check it out."

Man on bus#1 - "Anytime, mack. Hope ya find that friend a yours."

Man on bus#2 - "Oh..hes no friend of mine..."

Man on bus#1 - "Whateva. Jus that from your descripshin n all, it sounds to me like youd want that guy to be a friend rather than an enemy."

Alberto311, send it again if you're still up for it. Evidently, per Kevin, it needs to be done yet again.
