Thanks dude!

Got a little further behind the eightball here as I suddenly had a freelance gig on top of my dayjob stuff that took a portion of my weekend. Anyway this is a character for a comic I'm actively working on (OOH HOW NOVEL!), not the webcomic but something else on the shorter side for now. I might throw it up as an artist BB or something if I get it done in a timely fashion.

I've been debating going for years. It's not outside the realm of me driving to, but I see Megabus leaves outta philly & basically goes overnight to & from pretty affordably considering. But sleeping might be a problem. Anyone doing a room I could go in on?

I don't know how well the spindly noodle arm thing's going to play. It's okay for an effect every now & then but usually, people want to see you have some semblance of anatomy knowledge when you submit to the site.

In looking at your stuff, there's little things that give me the indication that you seem to draw as you go rather than work from a sketch. Like 'you're not going to see this arm in a sleeve so let me just draw this sleeve.' And it shows. Just little things like in the picture of the girl how the bend in her arm looks a little disconnected from the way her sleeve hangs. Or at the bottom, that while the figure tends to be a bit rigid, but then there's a skew slightly at the waist & legs coming out of his tunic. His one arm looks a little longer than the other too. I think the best way to fix that would be to draw the figure & apply the clothes. They'll fall more naturally that way & things won't tend to get that strange skew.

The color's on the basic side, but I think it's pretty good.

That's all I can really say until there's comics really.

Yeah I think I might just do more stylistically flat stuff now that I can work digital & keep my line art super clean. Before, since a lot of times I was using straight pencils, the lines were just a little too muddy to get away with that sorta thing. Thanks very much!!

Thanks dude! Those three, coincidentally, have been the 100% digital ones. And here's another.

I did a slightly larger flat version too because I thought it looked neat & wanted to show a little more of the detail.

-by not cutting it up and planning, do you mean like... drawing out everything in-sketch that will be on the page first, and then making borders after the fact? Or do you simply mean, plan ahead with text in mind?

i think what he's getting at, at least what i'm seeing, is that drawing details & then running a gutter through them feels disconnected & does your pages a huge disservice. better preplanning about framing, composition, pacing, text placement, & angles would really up both the quality of the work & the readability. right now, the way you break the page up after the fact feels rushed & just sorta arbitrary, whereas, take the middle tier of that first page, if you sketch things out & figure placement  of the focal points & text beforehand, the left hand panel could have way less dead space & the right hand side wouldn't feel so cramped. AND you could try adjusting the angle for a more dramatic composition rather than dead on & breaking the 180 rule.

the gutter thickness is improved, but just think in terms of optimizing the page for your art. thick gutters mean lots of negative space. that negative space pushes your work back & forces it to compete for attention.

i'm not digging the captions. it makes everything seem like narration rather than dialogue. adding balloons to separate the two would help.

with the tuktuk, it was part of a without/then with reference exercise (I took out the one i did prior from memory because it looked wretched). I don't really use reference all that often, but on account of the exercise, I tried to stick really close. I think the perspective was mostly a fluke though because the angles didn't seem nearly as severe in the original. thanks though!

Thanks man! I appreciate it. I thinking it ultimately ended up looking kinda sharp, but I didn't get what i was intending setting out, which was more of a different style entirely.

She's supposed to be a Dwarven sniper. I started her around the time I did the first guy but didn't finish it until now, of course just as everyone suddenly has opinions on snipers after that dumb movie. But whatever.

Thanks guy! Yeah with the colors, my goal is to kind of try somethings a little out of my comfort zone.

This weekend, I'm looking to get a couple done so I can spend next weekend exclusively on that other thing I've got going... But again, here's a sneak peek for next week.

Name & color scheme might change some. Not entirely sure. She's supposed to be an alien superhero diva type. More details once she's posted for real Thursday (which I'm doing only because Jan 1st fell on a thursday, but mid week? eh I dunno). After that, 1 month down, 12 to go.

Here's a sneak peek at the next one before it goes up tomorrow

(Hope that link works. It's queued for tomorrow but not posted yet) This is the first one I've done 100% digitally. The line weight got kind of chunky in places but I'm pretty okay with it ultimately.

And Week 3.

Still like the kernel of the idea I started this with but I fucked it up executing it in a few different regards. Ech.

Week 2. Here's this one I did in the fall finished.

Like I said, I never officially posted him & I'm still making tweaks & finishing the one I had been doing for this week originally.

Thanks man!

Speaking of buffers, I'm working on one for the characters too as I have a lot of work I want to get done this year. I never got around to officially posting that character in the robes with the halo I posted in the fall. so that might be my week 2 right now & the one I was working on originally might be week 3 then so I can give it a little extra bit of love.

the 10-15 is less about needing 10-15 pages but rather reaching a certain point in the story. It's a good cliffhanger point, where things really start to jump off. besides I could post all of that & have it read as kind of a concise first chapter. since it's hinging on me vs time, i'm trying to pump a lot of quality into these sort of preroll pages, but after that it's about meeting deadlines. im hoping between working on these first & the buffer pages, I'll find a sweet spot. and the objective is of course world domination.

if you have any inkling of doing a webcomic, you should give it a go. you could always test the waters with a finit eshort story. go for it!

Thanks dude!! I did more to the colors on that, I think that was when it was about 90% done. Like it was bugging me how she wasn't casting a shadow & stuff.

Are you trying to get a bank of pages up first so that it will be a regular update?

Yeah, get a pretty heavy buffer going since I've got a dayjob, a bunch of shit going on, & well, frankly I take for-goddamn-ever. Also, part of me was thinking about dropping the first 10-15 pages in one big chunk too, just so there's something substantial to start reading too, either all at once or daily for that first stretch. But I wouldn't be counting that necessarily as part of the official buffer. But that depends on exactly how much I can get done between now & the arbitrary deadline I have set in my head.

So I'm still working on my webcomic. Didn't reach my goal of being able to post it with the new year but I haven't stopped. At the same time, I was really bummed by not posting much last year so again, this year I'm attempting to do a character a week. Not much, but something to show for at least.

I tried black science when I saw it listed here. It reads like interdimensional Fear Agent, which I guess is good for Remender, but the character shit seems way overwrought, where as the thing I liked about the former, in the ones I read, was just weird situation after weird situation with little time to internalize. The art is very pretty though.

I've been on a Simon Roy kick lately. Dying for the second Prophet Strikefile to come out. Sure it's not a comic but the world building in that shit is so fucking tight. And then Earth War. I had read Jan's Atomic Heart, but just picked up the newer collection from Image too. I've been looking to check out The Field. Anyone reading that?

At a small local con, I was finally able to get my hands on an old Meathaus collection. Also Farel Dalrymple's Wrenchies. I've been going through it really slowly but it's really fucking great comics.
