Title: Need Help with comics/deadlines/colors/etc? Come to ANGIE BOOTCAMP
Post by: Angie on Jun 15, 2011, 02:08 PM
Have issues meeting deadlines? Or just need a push in the right direction on your inking or coloring? Or do you just want your very own editor for a project that'll kick you in the pants to get something done?

Well, I'm here to help at

Okay Angie, that sounds fun, what the hell is this?

Pretty much I will work with you 1 on 1 for the duration of 1 beyond battle on Void. It doesn't have to be character based, it can just be a one shot, but it must be an individual project and not an actual battle. And I'll get to why in a moment.

The way this will work is you sign up in this thread with a small pitch and the deadline you're wanting. From there I will contact you and we will iron out a formal schedule with a set of mini deadlines. Once we have the deadlines ironed out, you will start up your beyond battle with the deadline. From there, every time one of the mini deadlines comes up, you must upload what you have or in the case of thumbnails/scripts, email me your progress. I will then give you feedback on what you have thus far and you continue on your project.

Sample Schedule:Bob wants a beyond battle with a 4 week deadline, he wants the whole thing to be in color. So we structure his schedule like so

May 1st:script and thumbnails due
May 8th:complete pencils due
May 15th:complete inks due
May 22nd:complete project due

The schedule will be structured around how you work, if you do a page at a time that's cool, if you do everything in steps like the above that's cool too. The only thing that will be unacceptable is "I'm going to do everything in the last week", that's a waste of a long deadline. You are free to do more within each deadline so if you want to move ahead and do some coloring when you had only inking scheduled for the week, that's fine.

THE RULES (NO EXCEPTIONS!)

-1 person at a time. This is to keep myself from burning out, I'll post when I'm available again. You are free to sign up at any time, you will be added to a list. In the event there's an actual line and you want to pull out, just let me know.

-2 week minimum deadline, 4 week maximum.

-Finally, to prepare you for the real world, you miss a deadline, you are fired and the beyond battle is removed from the site. While there is nothing stopping you from submitting the comic later, I will not help you any further and I will move onto the next person. No excuses, no extensions, work must be on my desk by the deadline. There is ultimately no punishment beyond that. I won't hate you forever, but I will forever remember you as the lost child that could not meet deadlines. (this is also why it can't be done as a battle, I can't just remove the battle)

The same goes for if you're a total douche. You don't get to be a douche to real editors or in the work place so your butt is also fired if this happens. I also reserve the right to decline people in the event we have a rocky history to avoid inevitable internet dramas.

What happens if you get fired? Are you eligible to go again?

It will likely be a case by case basis. But if you're fired due to failing to meet deadlines, I will be willing to give you another go. However, in order to be eligible to go again, you must complete 5 comics on Void. And when I say complete, I do mean complete. If you were fired because you were a douche, you will not get another chance. If you get fired a second time, I will not give you another chance no matter what.

If I have done your bootcamp before and succeeded, am I allowed to go again?

Yes, but not right away. I would prefer people wait a few months before jumping back in to be fair to others that might be wanting to do it. That and it will help you practice standing on your own. No one's ever learned by having someone hold their hand for everything after all.

I would be an idiot not to try out for this. Seeing as I have proved myself to be unreliable in deadlines I would be willing to make the effort.

Deadline: 2 weeks

Pitch: David is moving out from his Uncle Murphy's house in the Void suburbs to the Entourage's dojo in order to be a more fully integrated member of the team.

The story focuses on David's transition into the new world of Void city beyond his commutes into the city to do repair work and also the relationship between him and Murphy and how this changes things between them. It is also shows how the world of Void above ground can be just as dangerous then below it.

Okay, Fern signed up first but won't be able to do this until the beginning of July which gives us just enough time to do your project Orion. Email me at angieness@gmail.com with all your details and what you want your deadline to be and we will set up your mini deadlines.

I need this SO BAD. Sign me up.

Due to me being incapable of meeting a long deadline, I need to learn how to make mini deadlines for my self.

I want to do a reboot for my character Zedan Dromer.

Deadline: 2 weeks, 5 pages.

Pitch: I want to do a new Intro Battle style BB for Zedan, which will show some of his other companions and part of the reason he was banished from the Dreamlands, ending with him dropping out of the portal into VOID City. It will be full of heavy foreshadowing as to why it's so important for Zedan to get back to his own world and will also hint at the bond he and his companions share.

I know you're working with Orion first and then Fern, so I'll get started with doing Zedan's redesign.

Thanks for all the help, angie!

I missed my self-set deadline for my Beyond Battle for Trix a while back, and I feel that it is completely unacceptable (which is partially why I haven't done a battle in so long). Now that I've completed my fight with Kars, I think I want to sign up for this and try to get the BB done.

Pitch: Trix goes adventuring in the underbelly of the city to find a ghost that's been calling out to her. She gets attacked by a monster along the way, and must prove her worth before the ghost will agree to help her.

Probably looking at a 5-6 week long deadline, maybe about 8 pages depending on how I decide on the finalized script. Just tell me when you're ready to start (I know you've got a line already).

Thanks!

Right this moment might not be the best time for me to start it-- I was expecting to have some more time while the other two went. I'm starting classes and moving in a week so my time is stretched thin already. If you need me to start now I think I could, but I don't know how good the quality would be that way (i.e. I'd have to rush it in all likelihood).

If Kent wants to go, it'd probably work better for me. Thanks :D

Oh wow, this is indeed a great idea. Lord knows that I was pretty decent meeting deadlines and making battles when I had no life, but now with an all day job, I've literally come to a standstill when it comes to comic making. I'm not sure if I want to commit to this now (as I'm not 100% sure I could make it and I WANT to make it, so bad!), but I'd love to pick your brain on how you manage YOUR time and make space for the epic work you do.
Title: Re: Need Help with comics/deadlines/colors/etc? Come to ANGIE BOOTCAMP
Post by: Angie on Oct 04, 2011, 09:25 AM
Well if you ever want to sign up, go for it!

Pretty much the way I work is a goal and reward system.  I try to make an overall goal for the week and will break down how much I need to do a day. (for instance, you're doing a Void battle and have 7 days and want to do a 20 page comic, you need 3 pages a day to do it) Obviously I have to take in account how much I can do on a day I have to go to the day job, so I always make it something realistic. You don't want to make impossible goals as your daily goals as that'll just discourage you when you can't meet it.

As for the reward system, this is how I break it down

If I want to do something fun, I have to accomplish my goal for the day before I can do it.

So for instance, on a day I have to go to my day job I normally shoot for getting 1-2 pages colored depending on the length of my shift and when it takes place, I normally do all color work after my shift. I'm not allowed to play videogames/watch tv/read stuff/etc. until after I have colored what I need to for the day. If my shift wasn't 2-10 on a Saturday, I will most likely try to squeeze in drawing a BB page.

On a day off from my day job, I usually set my goal as 3-4 pages for my color work and 1-2 comic pages drawn. But in the case of my comic pages, getting to draw my pages is my reward for getting those color work pages done. By making getting to draw my reward, it makes me look forward to drawing the pages and makes it even more fun.

It can definitely be tough, especially on days I have a very long shift at my day job so coming home and doing more work can be hard. But it's always worth it. Really the big key things you need for this are dedication, self control, and focus.

For bootcamp I don't expect people to straight up work this way, as a lot of people aren't going to be used to/be able to handle the idea of work work and more work before play. This is what I've done since freshmen year in high school so it's what I know as I've grown up doing it, but I know that most people are going to be different.

From what I've seen on Void, people aren't necessarily having time management problems (well in some cases, that's a problem) it's just that a lot of people have issues with setting unrealistic goals/trying to do things that are impossible for them. I'll see people planning giant epic comics even though they've never finished anything.

It's fine to plan big exciting comics, but set those big exciting comics as your goal for down the line. If you can't do 3 finished comic pages, you're not going to suddenly become awesome and crank out 30 pages in a week. But it's something that can definitely happen down the line. Know your limits, but keep in mind you can gradually increase those limits. Do a complete 3 pages comic this time, next time shoot for 4 pages, then 5 on the next battle, and so on. If you can't surpass 5 pages, keep working on it until you can.

Another enemy of Voiders is over planning.

No wait, this is a serious business issue so

is more appropriate.

It's fine to set a cool story as your goal down the line, but if you just got into Void or have never managed to finish a comic on the site, don't even think about a big lengthy back story for your character. Remember, no one cares about your character, who they are, where they've been, etc. until you make us like them through your comics, and I'm not going to like them if all I've seen from you are sketches and excuse pages. If you're the type that wants to do a big storyline for them, don't even start planning things until you know you can do it. Getting to do something exciting story wise for them can be a nice goal to work towards, so I definitely recommend not allowing yourself to overthink things until you'll be able to do it.

Another enemy of Voiders is over planning.
Thanks for that.  I find that to be really true for myself.  In fact, a large part of why I decided to join Void is to get myself over my tendency to over-plan and over-think, and just draw some freakin' comics.

Post by: Angie on Oct 04, 2011, 11:06 AM
Glad to help! People are free to plan and do big stories and stuff, it can definitely be done successfully. But it has to stop if it hinders you from doing anything or finishing anything. That and new people should really get a feel for the site and hit the ground running before they decide if doing something that will require a lot of planning is right for them.

I can't even begin to thank you for this. The solutions to problems often stare us in the face and we don't look back.

With the invitational going on, I know I can't participate in this for a bit. But I am eager to put what I've learned here to practice.

Glad to help! Yeah, easiest one of the biggest downfalls of new and old Voiders alike, is trying to do a big storyline when you can't finish a comic. Most people would rather see a finished simple comic over 20 pages of incomplete sketches that barely make sense. Just gotta learn to crawl before you can walk!

In other news, I'm going to be reopening this up soon.

Okay, things have calmed down in my life some so bootcamp is re-opened! If you would like to sign up, do so now! I know there were a few people waiting when I closed it, so let me know if you're still interested.

Hi, I remember you mentioning this to me before.
I'd be really interested to have a go after May 24th if that is possible? Also, are we still allowed to do battles while it is going on?
Thanks. :)

That date should be fine. You can still battle during this, just obviously you still have to make your deadlines with me or you get fired.

Oh, goddamn. I have been eyeballing this thread for, like, forever.
If the next person who's interested isn't available 'til after the 24th, I would like to squeeze in. I am looking back at the disaster that was my fight with Hiemie and I think I have some issues I need to iron out.

Would you be willing to browbeat me, Angie?

Hey angie, I was wondering:

I have a BB-story planned for Ted - I already have something resembling a script, it won't be long (3-4 pages) and it would be just awesome if I could get the feedback from a professional artist like you during the process.

So if J can't until 24th, would you - if you have time and space - consider putting me on your bootcamp for two weeks?

Angie, if you're otherwise occupied I would be happy to pick up some slack in playing editor to a few chosen people at a time. I tended to do so at WFA although my expertise is perhaps I bit more limited than yours- (COLORING, DIGITAL) I can spin a good yarn and crack a mean whip.

If Fed is game, so am I.

Y'know. After the past 2 matches I've faced It may be a wise advice to try out this bootcamp to improve and progress my activities in VOID. There's nothing more I would love to do than make VOID more enjoyable for me and for my fellow artists I compete with. I'd like to test out my abilities in your training and learn to become a better comic artist, haha.

Sure thing Tinman! Let Fed know you're open for business in PM. And I'll add you to the list The Sketch Fighter. You're free to work with your own rules, but to keep it all bootcamp like, you should still fire people for not meeting your deadlines.

Yesss Tin, I would love to be taken under your strong, firm, well-perfumed wings!!

As I explained to angie I already have a script by the ready, it's not gonna be tooo long of a story, but I would love to have some input by more talented artists - and don't worry about coloring or digital, imma not much for em new-fangled technologiees meself.. pencil, ink and paper baby.

So yeah, if you still fancy it (and didn't post the suggestion in a drunken fit) send me a PM and we'll work something out :D

You're welcome Joe, I'm always happy to help those willing to help themselves in improving their craft. Once I'm done with this Invitational Tourney I'll be able to devote more time to this- Thresher and you are my next disciples for sure.

Things are going well for Fed I think, it's been interesting to see him up his game and quality thus far.

So, does a two week bootcamp session sound good?

I would like to sign up for this bootcamp please!

Looking for a 3 week deadline on a 5/6 page comic.

Pitch:  In a city just outside Void a young man locked in an asylum recalls the horrors of his life under a government ordered mass experiment so called The Center.  (I can give a much less vague explanation I just didn't want to give too much of the plot away)

I'm ready whenever you are open.

I am temporarily re-opening the bootcamp for one specific purpose!

I am willing to do bootcamp for 1-2 people to help with their EnterVOID Anthology entry! If you're wanting to/are currently working on the anthology and need me to kick you in the pants to get your comic done, sign up here! I'll take on the first 2 people that sign up and give you a schedule to keep to. Since I've seen some people potentially dropping out or being iffy about having an entry, I think this could be helpful to some of you!

So if you're struggling to do your entry and want me to give you some feedback and mini deadlines along the way to make it happen, sign up!
