Bauhaus
http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Bauhaus.html
The building created by Walter Gropius, pretty much the forerunner in industrial thought and design. And as such it embodies the Industrial aesthetics and ideals. Eventually Gropius moved to Massachusetts and created his ideal industrial house in Western MA. It too is a sight to behold and appreciate.

#Sukiya Reference
Sukiya
Japanese-y style.
Sukiya style architecture is pretty common in Japan. It was started as a trend amongst nobles and is a style in which everything is artificial (placement, construction, etc.) but is supposed to resemble nature as much as possible. There is no uniformity in the plans (no symmetry) so that the arrangement seems natural. It was a way for them to understand and appreciate commoners without having to get their hands dirty. And today, it's everywhere.
http://kyokoto.com/
The slideshow here has some great sukiya examples, interior and exterior. There's also some skyscrapers here and there but they're pretty cool too.
http://whatwedoissecret.org/madebyblog/2009/11/sukiya/
More popular modern example. Sukiya with a modern twist.

watching the actual fights are a lot better i think, it gives you a better understanding of motion rather than just drawing the static poses. gorgeous photos though uwaaa

-
Well I know this thread is several months dead but I think it must be said that this book I found must be read.
;D
The Human Figure in Motion
by Eadweard Muybridge
(NSFW) but in a purely academic way.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/28884532/The-Human-Figure-in-Motion-Muybridge-Eadweard (http://www.scribd.com/doc/28884532/The-Human-Figure-in-Motion-Muybridge-Eadweard)
The book is a collection of frame by frame pictures of various figures in action from simple walking to throwing medicine balls to fighting and to women sitting and other activities.
This is a rather old book, but the models are still valid and clear enough to use. I have found it immensely helpful for pose reference even though they are not three dimensional they are great for the those that need that grounding of movement in your comics/art/animation/whatever.
A scan of the book is hosted on scribd.com in the above link.
Hope it helps

Wow....its so... jarring yet beautiful to see that time period in full color and without distortion.
A great find.
-
Yeah I agree. I think the latest batch of photos has great quality as well. I also love the UFC (I guess) fighting ones. How and when is it appropriate to draw from 2D photos like this though? I don't wanna fill pages with photo reference and then be told I should have done more life drawings.
-
photo reference means just that: reference. If you're unsure about how a body should look from a certain angle, or what clothing people actually wore from a certain time period, then you use reference to see what real life looks like.
-
Yeah I agree. I think the latest batch of photos has great quality as well. I also love the UFC (I guess) fighting ones. How and when is it appropriate to draw from 2D photos like this though? I don't wanna fill pages with photo reference and then be told I should have done more life drawings.
I've been told by haughty art teachers that referencing from photos are not exactly the way to go--mostly because you're referencing 2D work to 2D work. So in reality you're not really learning how to render a 3d object in a 2d world. The photos have essentially done the work for you. So no skill has been gained.
But when its all you got? Eh. Loosely reference photos for inspiration. I still find live figures to give a better learning experience.
-
Can't say I agree with that. Drawing a still life from a set position will, assuming you aren't messing your angle up, be essentially the same as drawing from a photo. It's not like the photos don't show shadow or anything, because they do. And even if you are simply reproducing something that's already there (which is really what drawing is 90% of the time, whether you're drawing from life or your own imagination) it will help you learn and it will help you improve. When I was little I would draw things straight out of comic books, and later when I was drawing a character from my imagination in a similar pose, or with a hand in a similar pose or something, I could recall the picture I had drawn before and use it as a base. It really surprises me that your art teachers would say something like that. Then again, that probably means your art teachers won't force you to do master copies, and THAT I envy. Master copies are the opposite of fun.
-
I don't know if this has been posted here yet, but this a sorta old news item: Crazy old Japanese man builds a functioning giant beetle robot. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4N8OQMnp0g) Besides being crazy awesome, it's cool see something that most people wouldn't even dream of constructing in real life. And certainly there could be some ideas for robots or even characters, no?

Some of the color images in this book are so striking and beautiful (it's it's own horrifying sort of way) that I may just buy myself a copy. I couldn't find many decent linkable images, so you'll have to put up with a NYT.com slideshow, sorry.

Hashima? Yeah welcome to everyone else's 6 years ago.
I lost the bookmark, but I used to have a link to a japanese photographer's site. All he did was take pictures of that & abandoned places like that all throughout japan, like train lines, & (overlook-style) hotels, & psych wards tucked away in forested hills that were slowly reclaiming the land. It was all cool stuff. Can't find it now though.
But if you're going off about Hashima now, let me put you ahead of the curve & let you in on Baikonur (http://englishrussia.com/2010/05/28/baikonur-photography/) & Pripyat (http://englishrussia.com/2011/05/01/pripyat-this-march/).

What kinds of sources do you get your action shots from?
Do you have a favorite website? do you have some cool images you found off og google? are there any videos or movie stills you use?
One of my favorites is this stunt video.

Cool vid, downloaded it into my ref folder.
I have nothing really to post but instead a suggestion to check out pro-wrestling. They act and preform maneuvers that are exaggerated. So you are able to see clearly the actions involved and the effect it should have. Japanese pro-wrestling has some top notch stuff.

So, using stock photos as reference in your comics...
This is something I feel like a lot of artists discount as cheating, but in reality, almost all pro comic artists use reference shots to some degree, even if it's only to remind them of how the anatomy works in a pose they rarely draw.
I recently asked for Voiders' favorite stock sources on the DA Chat, and I got several very interesting links, almost all of them on DA.
Here is a list of what I got and what I have found while working on my recent comic.

I edited the first post with some good links from the other merged threads for easy viewing.
Please continue to post cool photos and links that you find here! Any new reference threads that pop up will be absorbed into this one so everything can be contained in one happy place. Thanks!

Amazing! This was a really entertaining browse, good to have all this in one spot. When i can, I plan on using this to its fullest :)

For someone like me who loves to use deep shadows, this is a somewhat invaluable reference:

It's also great because of the focus on different body parts and angles of those body parts. Worth checking out/practicing from.
Also I'll just tag this like the earlier posts for convenience:

#Statues
Also some more stock references. There is some overlap with the previous post by Bent One but the more the merrier right?

maybe no one needs this but if y'all want outdoorsy pictures of mountains, oceans, swamps, lakes and shit like that I took all these photos myself, and have used them as reference for backgrounds. Also theres some animals in here because I gotta do something with all the pictures I take at the zoo.

Any various gun photo refs? I'm having hard time drawing guns from several position. Suppose I could go buy a toy gun, but if there's refs for various types of gun weapons that'd be pretty coolios.

http://world.guns.ru/main-e.htm
It won't have guns at *every* angle, sadly, but it does have a huge plethora of guns to look at if you ever need to change up your props.
