Lai Shan sipped the last of her second glass of honeywine, the familiar fizzy buzz gracefully giving way to a fruity, sweet aftertaste.

"I suppose I'll check on our 'search party'. I'll have those two slackards to blame if this bottle is empty by the time I return."

She set down her glass down next to Yoshiko and rose from her seat. "Save me a glass, would you sweetie?"

With a parting wink from over her shoulder, she crossed the room and descended down the stairs to the library. Remaining at the base of the stairs, she glanced around and kept her ears open for any sign of the two.

52
Yoshiko stuck her tongue out at the hooded man called Seth.

"M'tongue'snot takin well t'tastes not salty nor sweet, boy. Most booze taste like piss water."

She flicked her hair and placed a finger on her cheek, glancing back at Seth with a hint of venom.

"Sides, s'not like i'vta enforce masculine image like some chaps, eh prettyboy~?"

Lai Shan playfully wraps an arm around Yoshiko.

"Oh no, this isn't that cheap tavern slog. Imagine like... ripe berries and grapes with a dash of honey, and a pinch of mint I think?"

Slipping loose, she crouches down next to the crate, ready to grab a bottle.

"But if that's still not to your taste I could always bring you some milk and honey."

53
"Well I mean, we could do this the professional way... or we could do this the fun way."

Lai Shan took a glass from the shelves, took a seat and crossed her legs, awaiting the prized beverage.

"How about a toast? To hoaxes and lies and the bored statesmen who buy them!"

YOSHIKO and LAI SHAN

"I had no worries the False Chanterelle would find its way into your capable paws, Yoshiko my dear."

Braddock crosses his arms. "Now, I reckon you're right, a story is worth its weight in gold. But I've seen men killed over art before, and far better made pieces than this. Surely, for something so utterly kitschy to be so in-demand by those-in-the-know, it has to have some magic to it, don't you think?"

LUIS and SHARIS

Braddock pauses. "Luis, Sharis!" He waves you over to assist with a sturdy wooden crate. "Help an old man with this box, eh? There's something I acquired that I was saving for a special night...the finest honeywine from far-off war-torn Arcadia! Anyone fancy a drink before the main event?"

"Drinking before the job, Braddock? You seem almost certain this is gonna pay off."

Lai Shan smirked, if only to show her slight concern. Those-in-the-know... if this painting was the real deal, then everyone who knows will definitely come after it. And that might mean a run-in with the Syndicate, a reunion that Lai Shan wasn't particularly looking forward to.

"All the more reason to get this over with, yeah? Clean out this 'maze', then sell off the painting to the highest bidder before anyone knows that anything even happened."

Quick character bio:

HONG LAI SHAN (first name Lai Shan), THE GOLDEN CAMELIA is a former agent of the Syndicate, a wide-reaching criminal organization whose advocates are taught the Way of Shadow martial arts. The Masters of the Syndicate consist mostly of High Elves, long-lived masters of the Shadow Arts who looked down on Lai Shan's forest origins and doubted Lai Shan's ability, but she persisted in her training for her first fifty years in the arts of infiltration, subterfuge, and the Way of Shadow, and was made an active agent of the Syndicate for fourty years, committing simple robberies, heists, and cons. The rigid nature of the Syndicate society bored her and she couldn't stand the disrespect of her High Elf masters, so she simply left one day. As a Syndicate monk on the loose, she is stealthy, charming, knowledgeable in deadly martial arts, and will rob you blind the moment you aren't looking. But to most, she is Countess Lang, Lady of the Silver Harvest, a wealthy merchant tycoon from the far east.

56
Lai Shan leaned over Yoshiko's shoulder to get a gander at the painting as well. No matter how she tilted or gleaned, the painting did not look any better.

"It's worth as much as its story, at least. There's always someone willing to pay as long as the rumors are still fresh. Best we cash it in while the rich folk are still amused by the fairy tale." she remarked. "Still, hard to believe such an ugly painting is supposed to open a gateway to some hidden labyrinth."

ABI
•   How did you first hear about the painting and Maze?
•   Who is responsible for the fall of the Shadow Temple? Where are they?

- When Lai Shan isn't on the job, she keeps her ears open while masquerading among the nobility as Countess Lang, Lady of the Silver Harvest Merchantry. There's a lot of information one can glean from bored baron's wives and generals' mistresses. It didn't take long before rumors of a "painting with mystic properties" began to surface amongst the gentry, and a great many of the nobles almost expect the painting to be stolen one way or another. Whether or not the tale of its magic is true, as long as the story persists, the painting is worth the weight of its fiction.

- The Shadow Temple crumbled from within, its leaders torn by a difference of interests. They were once a great global threat, an unseen force of change that alters the course of history from the shadows through subterfuge, intrigue, and key assassinations. In the wake of the last Armageddon and in the advent of the race to industrialize the floating islands, two schools of thought emerged from the masters of the Shadow Temple; the first was eager for preservation, to maintain itself financially in a world that was fast leaving them behind. These masters and their disciples turned their talents towards building a criminal empire through robbery, extortion, smuggling, and assassination for hire; this organization later became the Syndicate as we know it today. The second school of thought, comprised of the elder masters, concerned itself with legacy, to preserve their principles and use their gifts only to guide the course of civilization from the shadows. Though they were fewer, the elder masters were exemplars of their craft, and since their departure they have remained hidden, waiting for the time in which they must render their judgement upon civilization.

Classes that have access to healing spells: Bard, Druid, Ranger, Cleric, Paladin.

Of the classes with healing spells, only the Cleric and the Paladin are divine in nature. Bard is a potent support class with many healing abilities as well as the ability to skew dice rolls in favor of their allies. Druids are a well-rounded spellcasting class with equal parts support, defense and offense. Rangers are primarily a damage-dealing class, but is able to learn a handful of spells to augment their own abilities or to provide some extra party utility.

I'm gonna draft out some characters ahead of time, but before that, are you allowing the homebrew Gunslinger Fighter archetype? Here's the PDF: http://www.dmsguild.com/product/170778/Gunslinger-Martial-Archetype-for-Fighters

Mark me as Interested. I'll wait to see how the party forms up before deciding what I'll be playing.

Art Jams / CAMEOS NEEDED for Sword Art Online Review!
« on: Oct 28, 2015, 09:49 AM »
Hey everyone! As some of you might know, in my absence from Void I've been helping Majikura roll out anime reviews for our webshow, SugarPunch Reviews. In December we are going to be reviewing Sword Art Online, and it's going to be a HUUUUGE production with lots of animation involved. We're going to need a bunch of background characters to populate our environments, and that's where you come in!

Draw any of your characters in the style of Sword Art Online so we can cameo them in our review!

SAO costume design is a mishmash of fantasy armor and contemporary fashion, more for style and less about practicality (it IS set in a video game world, after all!). Here's some existing character designs from the first arc:

This is the starting armor for anyone who wants to be a Lvl.1 newbie!

We'll try to fit in as many cameos as we can. Have fun!

UPDATE: The deadline for entries is now December 5th!
