GO FOR BROKE! / Re: CG's stuff
« on: Mar 19, 2011, 05:24 PM »
Could you just like, die, or something? Just die. Die. You should be dead. Your every breath is wasted, there's too many people starving and too many people who have to wait in line behind you at things, that's not fair. Die, it's really the best thing you could possibly do.

I followed Monday here forever ago, and the site was too rad not to sign up. It gave me a reason to draw comics throughout highschool and keep up a fairly constant workflow, doing the Void shit helped me keep up a momentum to do some non-Void shit (which amounted to nothing of value but time spent drawing comics in earnest is never time wasted) and a large portion of the portfolio that got me into college was Void comics (Primarily one Wei decided was too shit to get posted, back when he went around deciding comics were too shit to get posted).

Through Void I've met some of the most impressive and most influential artists I've ever known, and I got a girlfriend off Void (We lived close enough that we were hanging out before we were dating, fuck e-dating). I fucking hate cons but goddamn if WW07 wasn't one of the biggest things for me as an artist. It was also when I started drinking. Since then I've been simultaneously banned and welcomed back as a special guest at the Chelsea Hotel for throwing a shitstorm party. Shit, WW09 was rad too. It felt rad sharing a row of tables with people I'd admired and finally having something of my own to show.

Most importantly I met Justin (Dawgmastas) and he and I are now putting out some badass books, and I'll admit I was heavily motivated by Void's Pulpo books and my disappointment in what they'd turned into to do so (No offense Galvo, but you know you hurt me bad with how mismanaged that one was).

Oh yeah and I lost my V card via someone I met on Void, so there's that.

I spent most of my time here being a contrary cunt and I learned a lot for it. Moreso when I did it with comics than in the forums but still. In looking for ways to break form and rules I experimented a lot in my comics here and that was awesome that I was allowed to. The site is imperfect, the site will always be imperfect. What one person loves is going to piss someone else right the fuck off. Punks won't go to Abercrombie, whatever. The world is a better place for having variety.

But this is my leaving the site. It's not for me anymore. I've done my time here, and I've had a great one, the best one. I'm not saying goodbye to anybody, just to the site. It's changed and it's not a website I'd want to use anymore, and I couldn't be happier. If it was still the website I wanted to use it wouldn't be the website you new users want to use. This isn't a website for adults, it's a website for kids. It isn't a website for comics professionals, it's for wannabes and neverwills, and it's okay to be either one. At some point though you have to grow up and say "I want to be a comic artist" or "I don't" and go on with your life.  I didn't even want to make a goodbye post, but I was struck with how pathetic it was seeing people still bitching about how the site has changed. Fuck you, move on, grow up. If there's anything that should be learned from this site it's that there's way bigger and better things out there than Void, but this is a fucking great place to find out what those things are.

Don't be this guy.

PS-I'm leaving because Gavin ruined Void.

The opinions being given are valid, some people like to obsess over one idea while others like to move on and generate more ideas and more work, and some people choose to do both. And Rofl you're killing your own argument.

I like Month of the Dead a lot, but I wonder if the whole Christmas wouldn't be special if it happened every day thing doesn't apply to MotD happening every year.

You two are doing a fantastic job of that by shitting on Phill. Back off jackoffs.

Cunt.

Well, Clash of the Titans WAS based more on the Harryhausen movie than it was the Greek mythology, so as far as that goes it wasn't THAT inaccurate. Still not exact to the source material though. The Lightning Thief was surprisingly accurate to the mythologies it borrowed from, taking into account what it was of course.

If not for the blind thing I'd be right with you on that, but making him blind sort of pushes that suspension of belief to a whole new level. Sure, Zatoichi was blind too, but they handled that without mysticism and made it a matter of skill and expertise, making him blind as a twist in a story such heavy religious overtones is more than just a little suspect of divine interference on his part. That and Eli just knowing that he had to go to Alcatraz, where lo and behold, all of mankind's knowledge is now being restored and maintained, so he can shave his head and put on a white dress and recite the entire bible. I dunno, that seems more dependent on the presence of belief than the suspension of disbelief.

And now that I'm remembering more of the movie, making it inclusive of all knowledge at the end seemed to be more of a pandering thing to me. It seemed like it was sending a positive message but reeked of some ideas I've never been too keen on, but that's a whole other issue entirely.

10
But Oldman wasn't even faithful, he was just looking to abuse the faith of others, it was faith vs. a lack thereof.

11
I'd agreed with you and thought it was mostly just a kind of lame movie, but when they reveal the hand of God played an active role throughout the movie it changes everything.

AS WAS SAID BEFORE, SPOILERS

He was blind. The whole time, he was blind. He was using an iPod while blind, he was looking for batteries and searching through things while blind, he was apparently bulletproof but deadly accurate in hitting every single target he was looking to hit while blind. You may have read it differently, but to me that read 100% as divine providence. I didn't see it as condemning Christianity, I saw it as condemning select Christians. It was polarizing and said "these people are wrong, these people aren't because they're taking the bible to heart and having complete faith in the stories and lessons being taught, and as a reward they're being protected by God from those that would do evil against them." I'd really have to watch it again to get more in depth with my condemnation, but the movie made me very very angry when I saw it.

12
Uh, Book of Eli isn't super religious propaganda? The fact that the entire thing is built up to a twist that relies on the existence and omnipotence of God and the shitty cumbersome dialogue about the power the bible has to and over people doesn't make it qualify? The insane pretension in the writing and Denzel's performance? It was like watching one of Orson Welles' worst masturbatory ventures into film but preachier and poorly played. You can tell Denzel produced it without even seeing the credits. Fuck that movie.

Snip snap, these look great! Your signature is a little ehhhh and kind of unnecessary since you're doing a lot of good self branding with the actual drawings. The pink and green one is fucking rad, well done man!

Wei, this isn't Spit Spat, if you're not going to provide a critique or a helpful comment you really shouldn't post at all.

Or just those last six words. Either works in this case.

Hahaha way bitter, but still pretty funny. She does say dumb awkward things, doesn't she?

As for the head-turning, I wasn’t able to find any examples of head movement in the comics and reference books I’ve looked at. A better representation of movement will come when I find examples to guide me.

I can definitely help you on this one:

Best reference in the world, especially for things involving heads, aside from that of course there's:

Less words, more pictures, you're getting better, but quit getting worked up over stupid bullshit and don't make everything personally you big baby. Believe me, aside from Kotori and Wei, the council doesn't really do idiotic grudges over stupid pointless forum drama. Just turn in good work and you'll get in. You're close, damn close.

19
I'm simply saying that the word leader should be applied where applicable.

I think you know who I mean, m'lord.

20
Hahahaha our leader? Really? Is that who he is?

And no Lune, the reason is apparently that he was unaware of the deadline, "our leader" doesn't seem to check on his site much, does he?

You seem to be attempting to do contour drawings. Try doing those outline drawings without lifting your pencil from the page.

Which is a general thing you need to start doing. Why are you making dozens of lines to draw one line? It's ugly and a really terrible habit. Slow down when you draw and pay attention to what you're drawing and how you're drawing. There's nothing magic about this, it's an abstract mental process that you need to lock down tight. You're converting 3 dimensional objects into 2 dimensional images, pay attention to it and make sure you're aware of what you're drawing while you're drawing it. Buckle down and work at it, make 50 drawings of everything you want to draw, and if you're not good at drawing it after that make 50 more.

That said, your whole figures are getting pretty solid, but your faces are still really weak. Don't stylize the faces at all. You'll notice how you draw facial features at some point, and be better for it.

and not to discourage you or anything but...

If you go around saying every doodle you do is a valuable piece of art you're going to continue sounding like a pretentious cunt. Your doodles aren't worth anything to anybody but you, and you should be glad of that. You have free reign to fuck up when you're doodling. Mess around, make mistakes, do shit wrong, strive to do shit right, learn how to draw and learn how to draw well so that when the time comes to actually produce a product of value you have the skills and capacity to do so. If you start thinking your every little bit of chicken scratch doodling is worth something to anybody you're going to set yourself up for disappointment when someone shoots down a really well made and well conceived piece.  How badly do you want to be good if you need bullshit bathroom wall philosophy to keep you in the game? Draw to draw, work to improve, have fun.

Good luck.
