Title: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Oct 31, 2008, 08:32 AM
Okay, so pretty much my least favorite thing to hear about my art is that I suck because I use Photoshop and color, so going into this new semester I've pretty much made my focus at school black and white art. I've finally gotten around to scanning all this stuff I've been working on, since it's mostly 18X24 I had to track down the big scanners on campus. (and what lovely scanners they are, oh man like 1 second to scan a huge picture) This is all from figure drawing since my other classes I'm just working on my senior thesis animation. The thing about my figure drawing class that makes it awesome, is the teacher lets us work with whatever we want and we can draw whatever we want and use the model as a reference. Since in the past I've always been forced to use pencil or charcoal and do refined renderings and all, I was thrilled to finally get to work with ink in a class.

Now one thing that makes me laugh is that everyone online tells me to stop relying on Photoshop so much but my teacher has recently been like "okay, you should mess around with these all in Photoshop and do stuff with them digitally because you're a digital artist" since most of this stuff was done with the intent on just being in black and white, I'll have to do some experimenting. When I do stuff to them I'll put the results up here. Since this teacher asked me to help teach a digital art class after seeing my pages for Void I figured I should see what I can do with them. Hopefully all these images work since imageshack likes to break images, this is starting from when I started the class in September to the present so the images are in order

-early September. It was pretty rushed since we were doing two poses that day, by the time I got to the legs I was almost out of time so there's all kinds of anatomy issues everywhere. Not using this for my final portfolio for the class

-during that same class period, zoomed in quite a bit on the model. Probably gonna do some stuff to it digitally, might or might not hold onto it

-think this was like mid September. We'd been drawing the same model a ton and I was getting bored so I was like okay I'll draw her as a robot type thing. I really rushed the background though and regretted only having like one sized pen at the time. This is about 18X24 and I'll be coloring it probably

-late September I think. I need to crop it a little as there feels like there's a lot of negative space and may rework the background some since there's nothing there so it feels empty.

-early October. Won't be touching this one digitally. My teacher kept encouraging me to really push the shadows and stuff so that's what I did.

-early October. Felt like doing something a little different. I was wearing a shirt Mickey designed so I was like heys I'll draw a wolf person.

-mid October. I again forgot my thinner pens so getting those little white areas was pretty tedious, don't think I'll do anything to this one digitally. Probably going to add some more to the background as I ran out of time that day.

-late October. This one was done with the intent of being colored since my teacher really wants me to color something. That day I just wanted to draw ridiculous things since that was like the same model I've had in all my drawing classes throughout college so I was so tired of drawing her. Went more stylized than I'd wanted to.

-from the same day as the above image. I messed up the anatomy on her a bit and I'm not really happy with the composition. I didn't have a ruler on me so I really winged the perspective and buildings. Not sure if I'll hold onto it for my portfolio unless I can make it ultra sexy with color.

-from this past Wednesday. The teacher was like okay we're going to do three quick poses today so you have to work fast. So I was like okay, and just tried to make them one composition. I went with a much different way of inking on this one and may continue to try doing something like this in the future. The scanner demolished it though, I really should have scanned it at grayscale instead of black and white.

this one is my favorite :D
The last one is pretty nice, too.

On the picture with the sword-weilding person, the perspective is really messed up on the left arm; it wouldn't be that tiny... I'm not sure that you would even see the whole arm; I think much of it would be hidden by the person's torso.

I was trying to figure out why I don't like this stark black-and-white, heavy-shadows style.. and I wonder if it's like, too balanced between the black and white areas? Like you know how they say when a picture is too "balanced," it gets boring? Maybe you have about the same amount of black areas as white areas, and you need to throw it one way or the other. The pictures aren't TOTALLY balanced, some pictures clearly are more black than white, but maybe try to push it even further?

Yeah, I'm trying to work on that since it's something my teacher pointed out too. Since I never really do just plain black and white I'm trying to get better with it, I want to try to do more like the last image in the future

Super nice blacks, Really digging it so far.

A cool tip, maybe would when you try to make it super black, try not to make highlights in the black heavy areas, such as the girl hugging her leg, the highlight below her, between her leg and the shadow, could be done witout it, and it would make it even darker, and, dunno how to explain, less polluted is not the correct word, but it would be a more clearer image, maybe. I mean, making the dark really dark and the light, more light, it will make it look better (though its already really good!).

I like youre really drawing the muscles and bones and such, keep on!

Thanks dude, I'll try that out! I've been mostly winging the lighting because my teacher's been pretty bad about giving us good lighting conditions so I've been trying to spot the shadows
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Nov 19, 2008, 03:55 PM
Nothing necessarily new, but I've started to do the digital stuff to the previous pics, figured I'd show what I have thus far

First off I apologize if any of these are crazy dark on your screen, I colored these all on my laptop which I've never colored on before. They look alright on my desktop monitor so I'm assuming they're alright

-Just did this one quick and cheap really haha I wanted to do something like I did on the BB cover that I'm working on. It's alright and made the picture a little less boring

-Nothing new technique wise here, just recycled some things I did for a page in the Frank battle really. I have no idea how this one will look on most monitors, it looked fine on my laptop but dark on my desktop so I lightened it a little in hopes that it'll look okay on most monitors.

-Tried to do something a little different than I usually do. I normally don't step away from my cel shaded stuff but I'd been wanting to experiment a little for a while since I always do this kind of thing in black and white and was happy with the results.

Art goes a long way Angj...

It is amazing what you can do digitising your stinging, paper cuts! They look a world different once you've invested effort into them with your LapTop or what ever it is. I realy do mean that they are altered so much as to seem to go from Drab Folder Quality to Damnear Gallery print and frame.

Accept this statement however you like. You are Free; but only to the degree of choice no?

I know-I know; "what" right?
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Nov 20, 2008, 10:15 AM
Nah, that made sense. Like I was trying not to go digital but since my teacher knew I primarily do digital stuff she pushed me to do it and I was happy with the results
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Dec 03, 2008, 08:28 PM
And doing digital stuff to my portfolio continues. As usual warn me if something looks too dark, since I colored these all on my laptop in class the stuff tends to look lighter on that monitor so I tried to lighten these up a little when I brought them onto my desktop.

-This one is pretty much an exercise in doing everything people on Void tell me not to do haha I pretty much took something that looked like shit and prettied it up in Photoshop to make it not look so bad. Since the semester is almost over I'm not sure if I'll have time to do more new pictures before my portfolio is due so I quickly prettied this one up as a standby just incase. Whether or not I use it in my portfolio for the class depends on time but hey, my teacher liked it so I'll probably use it anyways as lazy as it is.

That one with the robot parts showing through the skin is probably the best thing I've ever seen from you, it looks really really cool. There's still some perspective issues, like the bottom corner of the stand and the placement of the wall, but overall it looks really great. I'd get to working on perspective a bit, and slowing down a little more when drawing clothes, paying attention to exactly how they sit on people.

Post by: PONBIKI on Dec 04, 2008, 07:12 AM
i like seeing you do something else is very refreshing.and i like what i see keep at it.. i say do more pencil drawing with out inking too..or just grab a ball point pen and use it to draw in a new sketch book i say new because it wont have any of your other drawing helping influence u. and when drawing with a pen you pay more attention to line weight since you cant erase.
just trust me it helps when tring to do figures and perspective..i only draw in my sketch books in ball point pen.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Dec 04, 2008, 09:19 AM
Thanks guys! Jack, yeah, clothes and perspective are things I need to work on and that's what I'm going to try to focus on next since I was trying to focus on getting better with anatomy this semester. Ponbiki, yeah I do do stuff that isn't for Void haha but I normally don't put it online because it's normally a pain to get scanned or for my animation thesis. I'll try the ballpoint pen thing and see how that goes
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Dimension on Dec 07, 2008, 04:33 PM
Ang, I really like your coloring, it looks pretty nice. What I'd suggest you work on though, would be inking; I'd say you could work on your line widths a bit more. Aaand I know foreshortening isn't easy, but that'd be another thing I suggest working on, like the guy's left arm (with the swords and monsters) looks too small even though it was just supposed to seem further away, I still feel it's smaller than it should be.

...It would also be nice to see some of your traditionally colored stuff  ;3
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Dec 07, 2008, 05:52 PM
Well I have no traditionally colored stuff because it's fairly rare I do it anymore haha. I used to do a lot of oil and acrylic painting but don't really do it much anymore. I do have some older paintings I did back in my DA but nothing recent, doesn't help a lot of my traditional stuff is a state away right now. Pretty much everything I know about doing digital art I learned through doing traditional work. I have always believed that people should have a background in traditionals before they take the plunge to digital and obviously I'm no different. But because I have that foundation in traditionals from doing them so much in high school and college, I'm versatile enough to use them if need be and I'm a better digital artist because of what I've learned through them.

And yeah, I'm always working on my inking, that was pretty much my focus for the semester and while I think I've improved loads there will always be room for improvement. Foreshortening is always a pain so I'll try to keep working on it so I can make my stuff more dynamic and realistic.

Thanks for the feedback dude!

Just finished classes for the semester

-Busted this one out super fast because I needed one more thing for my portfolio. There is one other piece that I haven't finished that I'll finish up and share with you guys in a bit.

And because I'm nice, here's a WIP for my BB I'm working on

Obviously no it's not finished but shows the style I'm going with on this battle color wise.

Back to work on the BB. This and the following page both have way too much time spent coloring them haha so don't plan on any battles looking like this color wise until I can get faster with this method

I'm really liking the softness of your work here.
You have still managed to keep it looking sharp as well.
How did you do that?

The Only thing I'd mention is that the Horn in the upper left hand side of the page seems to have the need to be free selected, copied, pasted, and buffed up a little higher and maybe back along the Skull. Like it sorta looks like it's bonering out of her eye socket. Ghod! Where do I come up with this Ghastly - Crass rhetoric?

Been mostly busy doing my final student film, since I needed to save copies of the backgrounds I figured I'd show what I have thus far as well as some figure drawing work

(my apologies if these are enormous or too dark, I'm on the ginormous 30 inch school monitors and the lighting is a bit different than I'm used to)

These are just 2 of the backgrounds for the film. My teacher told me to just do backgrounds like I normally do but since I'm not crazy I did tone down the details just a little since I have to do 40 seconds in 1 semester. Since I'd gotten into the class 2 weeks late I had to pull a story out of my ass to show my teacher in like 10 minutes so I decided to expand on a scene from the Robin BB so yeah. I'll have more later, these are just the 2 I drew and colored for today. I have some character sheets and a few other backgrounds but nothing finished at the moment.

And these have both been shown in the figure drawing jam

I decided to continue to work on inking for Figure Drawing 4 this semester. I'm going to try to work in this style for about a month and move onto something else from there hopefully. The first one was my first attempt, I was originally going to do actual hatching but went with just going one direction with the lines. The second one is my second attempt which came out a lot better. It's a huge pain in the ass forcing myself to not make horizontal lines when I'm shading but it's never bad to try something new. I'd originally wanted to not have any outlines on the second one but my teacher suggested I just do a more subtle outline so I went with it.

Post by: Red on Feb 17, 2009, 02:00 PM
dammit angie your pieced together metal backgrounds are so awesome. The only thing that bugs me about the epic door background is that some of the highlights seem strange. When I look at this I think 'ok there is some light coming up top, and also some tiny lights shining embedded in the wall.' So particularly that patch of light halfway down the page on the right side... it kinda looks like there's a hole in the wall and the light is shining through, and right below it there are two little lights that look they are are small bulbs, and above it it looks the the light from above is shining on the metal. You've got a lot of soft lights and shadows, but I think you need more hard. Annnnd, on the left side is a pipe thing running horizontally, I think if you made a more defined highlight on the top there is would make it more 3-d. And mmmm maybe some sharper edged shadows to really stress the layering of the walls. I know OH GOD IM BEING SO NITPICKY IT STILL LOOKS AWESOME

Wow I keep forgetting this thing exists, I suppose I could update it. I've been pretty crazy busy with life so this probably isn't the biggest update in the world. I do have a few others I could scan but that involves going out to my car and getting shit unwrapped and out of the mount board which I'm not doing at 4am. There's 1 old one in here that were in the figure drawing jam and a pic from the color jam but yeah.

Mostly just figure drawing stuff since most my art time has been either working on battles, crappy commissions, or Pulpo. As it goes along I had less and less time to work on the pictures or was just experimenting

Just a repeat from the figure drawing jam, same technique as the others

You have absolutely no idea how much I hate working in pencil, I've never been good with it and have hated doing anything with it since middle school. But nonetheless I forced myself to do at least one pencil picture. Unfortunately I missed the class prior to this one so I lost a day to spend on it so I had to knock this out pretty quickly, I don't think I could have done much better with more time though.

Started trying to mix the kind of thing I did the prior semester with this semester.

Trying different things with line. The actual image is a bit bigger but the scan came out like ass so I had to crop a little.

I was reminded that holy shit, I hate doing cross hatching on these two. I didn't get to finish the one on the right since I was taking far too much time on the little bitty lines. I think I did another one or two pictures with cross hatching but I think they're chillin in my car at the moment.

Here's some random kitties I might eventually use for something. The big walrus is something the top dude rides around. It was pretty late and I was getting tired so I kind of halfassed the last one on the left.

Posted in the color jam, my warrior on WoW. Been working on my cel shaded stuff.

Random panels for the Pulpo entry I'm involved in, ALMOSTDONEOMGFINALLY well after Corny gets me the last page I'll finish coloring it. Story by Kotori, pencils by Kiraxlee, inks by Corny, colors by me obviously.

And for some Void stuff

Hey, it's Angie's mom. WIP, need to fix that lower body still, which is such a shame because it looked nice even though it's crazy long haha I'm working on doing a picture of her dad too and doing kind of like a big thing with both characters but that depends on how lazy I get.

I had art block for like a week so I did a random meme. And well these were the only two images I liked from it. Basically you draw a character at random ages, this is 13 and 25.

That's it, as you can see I'm alive, a battle is coming soon I swears but Pulpo comes first. I would love to share the Pulpo cover with you guys but I don't know if I'm allowed to show it to anyone.

While Angie's mom can force her body to make a lot more blood, I don't think she can make that much, that was just more of a "hey this would look cool" decision. Their names are Hajii and Cora and obviously they didn't give Angela her name.

I was diggin' the position of the character on the right in the first sketch, so the bloodstream/tentacle/whatever that is - going in front was a bit dissapointing to see. It also looks like it could be a cover-up.
In my opinion, if you could show more of the character - it'd be a stronger piece.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Jul 02, 2009, 11:40 AM
Yeah, I can see that. I actually did ink the whole thing with the intention of it staying more similar to the sketch. I might mess around with it since the blood isn't a ginormous issue to mess with in Photoshop since it's on a different layer.

I'm so neglectful of this poor thread.

I've actually been up to a lot lately, a good chunk of it I can't show off because it's paid stuff that's getting published and I'm not allowed to show anyone yet. Most of this is color work since well, that's what I do for monies artwise. The rest of the stuff I've been working on you'll obviously see in a little bit more than a week in ARMAAAAAA

Your colours are incredible good!! I think your interpretation of the Spiderman pic reaches the quality of the one the pro coloured.
Your frontal business card is well done, for the back I would suggest to delete the gray background. Conceptionally this is awkward, the dark area seems to 'fall down' to the ground and crushes the filigree cat logo. I think this can also work without a grey area, or if you want to keep it, put it down to the 'ground'
Another Idea would be, to put one of your pictures on the front part of the business card and keep the white and orange on the back. I recognized that a lot artist and illustrators use cards like that. It forces people to keep your card, because they like the picture on the front. It also helps to get them familiar with your style.

hehe, the poster is a witty idea! If I had a professional comic writer/drawer/publisher in my acquaintance I would have shown it to him/her ;)

Figured I'd share this since people on Void have told me for years to loosen up haha

and yeah it's pretty loose without the little speedlines going on

the store I work at is closing this week so I'm kind of meh so instead of moping around I figured I'd do arts instead to vent. Fortunately I'm not losing my job and I'm getting transferred but it's still a downer.

More colors, I have a lot more than this but I can't share a ton of paid stuff with you guys until I have permission

The guy that got me and Amazingdavid this job already posted full versions of the first 3 pages in black and white on DA but I prefer not to post paid work online until the project is complete and published so I'm only sharing these 2 panels. The whole thing is 32 pages.

These 2 the guy that wanted these done already posted them on some forums so I'm safe to toss them up. Michael Harris drew the second one and I colored 2 more pages of his. This one's a web comic so the all the pages will be up soon

Me and Kiraxlee/Kaelin did this gig together, these are some panels I had the permission to share on the internet. We did 6 pages. The book can be pre-ordered at http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=476 to my knowledge there is no porn in it but I haven't seen the whole book so I can't make any promises. Sorry about the massiveness of that second panel haha the guy sent me it to use for promo purposes and I didn't feel like resizing it

Thanks! haha It's not really impossible, a lot of my tricks are at http://entervoid.com/board/index.php?topic=9939.0 Once you know all the Photoshop tricks a good way to learn is to pick a random colorist you like and figure out how the hell they do what they do and try to color like them. I pretty much jump around from colorist to colorist and absorb techniques and styles, it's a good way to learn as well as allowing yourself to be more versatile.

Not a ginormous update. I've actually been super busy art wise but I can't show you guys most of it since I'm not allowed yet but them's the breaks with paid work. I may potentially have big news soon, we'll see if it works out but I'll of course share with you guys if it works out. I just finished up a cover for a comic that's done locally (can't share that one with you guys yet either) and I'm still chugging along on the War Zone comic with David so lots of work getting done. When I get a little more done I'ma tackle Void again since I have a lot of fun stuff planned.

First, holy fuck something I drew. When I realized the loose inking reminded me of Sean Gordon Murphy I went ahead and colored the thing like his work often is colored haha so yes, the similarity is intentional. This was mostly to practice this inking style for a dream sequence in a BB I'm working on. Drawing digitally is really bizarre for me

And for those that missed it in the jams

Angie vs Dreadnought
(http://a.imageshack.us/img832/9026/characterheadshotsbw.jpg)
the cast in Angie's story

Now for paid goodies, this first one was my first time coloring from someone else's flats. The client went with the one on the right. I'd tossed a multiply layer over his flats to kind of darken them and make it feel more like night but I didn't feel right messing with the flats more than that. Doing more stuff for them in the future! Lineart by http://artisticenigma.deviantart.com/
(http://a.imageshack.us/img805/5316/previewrp.jpg)

This is an ongoing gig, I'm getting paid to color the whole webcomic. I was given permission to show off a few pages but I'm only showing this 1 for now in case I end up liking some more pages more down the road. Work by Robert Gant for http://www.mutantcactus.com
(http://a.imageshack.us/img265/1852/page1n2preview.jpg)

And if you guys want to see some really ridiculously bad stuff I draw in like 5 seconds at work on receipt tape between customers I've been putting them up on a blog http://loafblog.wordpress.com/ kind of inspired by Dr.Salt's Every Day I Draw a Dog except mine has no effort put into it haha

So I was thinking about doing a new design sheet. And then I was all well, I've done like a ton of battles, if people don't know what she looks like by now they fail. So instead of doing boring Angie standing there you can have cute hot pinksplosion. (I have proper design sheets for people that battle me haha)

More ridiculousness like the above for shits and giggles since I'm working on a ton of comics right now for Void and pro stuff, these were mostly just me fucking around

Preview panel for one of the many beyond battles that are coming up, the comic is just one big fun exciting experiment. I figure I've spent so much time on Void working on coloring for job purposes and now that I'm actually coloring for money now I should start using Void more for experimenting

colored this drawing Kiraxlee did on a whim since I was tired

Color stuff I got monies for

the flats were done by someone else, I don't really do much soft style work but that's what the client wanted so I did it that way. It was good practice.

I learned to love using the color pink on this job haha for http://mutantcactusblogs.blogspot.com/

There's a fuck ton of other paid work I'm doing but I can't show it yet.

I started a BB on a whim. Which is really different for me since most comics I do have a ridiculous amount of planning done for them. So for this comic I've kind of hit the ground running, I didn't even bother to do thumbnails. (there is a script though) I'd pretty much started it because I'm waiting on pages from 2 major coloring projects to come my way and since I finished my current comics, I started this one just to kill time.

looks cuuute. Although it kind of bothers me that the panels aren't completely even. And perhaps you want to have your balloons overlap the gutters a bit so they aren't tangent or almost-tangent with the borders.

TINY COMPLAINTS.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay

I gotta say I'm really digging the blocky hand text looking-y think you were doing there for a couple. Like a lot. Is that some font, or is that all you? Either way, I definitely think you should apply it for reals! But like Jho said, try blocking it out & drawing them if so. I don't know how well that'd work overall with digital balloons.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Sep 18, 2010, 07:24 AM
I can try it out on my next comic, the blocky lettering is actually all me and not a font. I'll probably test it out on a comic that's less text heavy than this one. The text on this page I put in the hype thread

that's hand lettered too. I'll try and practice it since I've never really hand lettered a comic before, well, one where I seriously tried.

Finishing this guy up! 32 pages of me and David teaming up professionally. I have a handful of pages to finish up in the next few days, but after that this one's done. I just randomly chose some of my favorite panels that weren't spoilery, I showed a few of the full pages earlier in the thread. This is my first time coloring from someone else's script, most the jobs I've had so far the client was just like do whatever, it'll be fine. I pretty much make a living off coloring David's work now since we keep getting teamed up together on projects haha

If I've learned anything from this job it's don't fucking touch textures for something that's 11X17 and 600 dpi! Oh my lord, some files are 1GB a piece unflattened because of the textures. My system handles it okay but it's kind of a soul crushing experience saving the file after making a few changes.

And to show what I do with the artist's lines

When this book is available I'll let you guys know. It's kind of exciting finishing up my first big professional project. Next up is a 3 issue series which is equally exciting.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Aluísio C. Santos on Sep 29, 2010, 10:07 AM
Looking pretty neat. The only thing I can think about is if the texture was really needed in the last page. If it was used to give the entire page a textured feeling, perhaps, but if it was just for the roof, perhaps you could have deleted it for the tiny panel up there, and give it a better tridimensional effect to the walls not having the roof texture be i nthe same perspective than the walls one.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Sep 29, 2010, 10:11 AM
Yeah I still need to get better about keeping the textures in perspective. Since I kind of mostly weaned myself off textures I'd totally forgotten haha
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay

More random colorings! Yet another job with David, I feel as though we're gonna be pals4life now haha. This one is being shown around to some companies, I won't say who all has expressed interest in the event nothing comes of it. But if all goes well and the book is picked up I will be removing this obviously. This is my first time doing something in CMYK which has its drawbacks since the colors don't quite work how I'm used to. I've also been having fun with using color to make stuff pop into the foreground.

Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Oct 14, 2010, 06:05 AM
They're not really too different, but certain colors in CMYK tend to be a bit duller and colors don't seem to go as dark as RGB

Chugging along another BB. I still need to take the plunge with hand lettering and word balloons. Well, some of the text on the computer was hand lettered so it's a start. This'll probably be the last comic I get to draw this year since I have a bunch of projects I have to work on and we're nearing that time of year where I disappear from existence because I work in a mall

Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Nov 13, 2010, 07:36 AM
Aside from doing 80 bajillion beyond battles I've been coloring stuff cause coloring is what I do, there's another book I'm working on I have stuff done for but I haven't gotten the go ahead to post any of it anywhere

This is a poster ad for a 3 issue series that I'm working on, I only did the colors, the lineart and blood effects, text, layout, etc. were done by other people in Studio4Hire
(http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8238/lullabyposter.jpg)

I found a tutorial that showed a different way of doing flats so I wanted to try it out. This was chillin at the front of my lineart folder and had no background so it was the perfect test subject. It was also a little experiment in using only grays as the flats which made for a neat effect. Lineart by AJ on Void.

I was bored and saw this sitting in my lineart folder, it's a drawing Adam Warren did a really long time ago of Freefall for the Gen13 trading card set I think. This is actually upside down obviously but this was how Adam had it on his DA so I just kept it that way. I refused to look at Adam's colored version until after I finished. The trees and jacket were slightly annoying to color just because they were so detailed and it was hard not to want to over render on them.

This was a random paid color commission, I didn't draw it only colored it. The guy wanted dark and moody and well, dark and moody is my specialty and all so I didn't mind doing it. In the end I probably should have made the blue not as bright but I didn't want all that detail getting lost
(http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/9153/cheschirecatfinals2line.jpg)

And this past week at Mid Ohio Con I bought a fancy brush pen that had an actual brush tip so I was messing around with it. This picture was largely freehanded so I imagine there's errors all over the place but it was a really fun exercise.

Since Drawdan's comic with the character went up

This is a relative of Angie's and if all goes well it'll *finally* allow me to get Angie to go to where her species is from. Which is literally an island full of monsters (the ones that are of Angie's species primarily walk around in the beast form so much fun and chaos ahead). A long time ago on DA I asked for monster submissions if anyone wanted their monsters included so I finally get to use those too.

A few people have already asked if Avatar at all inspired the character and the answer is no haha I have never seen the movie, all I know is giant blue cats are involved
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Nov 27, 2010, 11:38 AM
More of Angie's family. Since the arc that's about to begin will *hopefully* conclude with her going to where her family is, I figured I should probably finalize their designs. We'll see I suppose haha. I have more lengthy descriptions of them and stuff on DA but you guys'll learn most that shit hopefully through the comics so I'm not going to bother here. I imagine I did a less than stellar job on the anatomy but I think I got the general designs down okay.

Angie's grandfather on her dad's side, Verril
(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/4733/angiesgrandpa.jpg)

Angie's grandmother on her mom's side, Michon
(http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2331/angiesgrandma.jpg)

The one piece of useless info I will give however is Angela obviously was not named by her family, that's why her name is out of place compared to their's
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Charlie on Nov 27, 2010, 04:17 PM
Cool dude! I like the designs, however if i had to nitpick I'd say for grandparents they do not really look old enough. They look more like middle-aged folk than the elderly. That's really the only nitpick I have anyway.

Looking forward to when they appear in the comics.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Nov 27, 2010, 08:00 PM
Oh yeah they're like 200 something haha, their species just has a different life span than humans so they age slower. Most of them end up having pretty short lives though

All done designing the family. You can see them individually on DA, I put them all side by side for reference purposes for myself. I didn't draw present Cora and present Hajii because I've already designed them and shown them in the comic, you'll eventually see them when they're a little younger in the story so I figured I'd go ahead and design them. I plopped Angie in there so I could have a size comparison.

I'm not gonna lie, I really don't like doing drawn commissions since I find them tedious, but I had a lot of fun with these. I was bored on my day off and was waiting to hear from a client to approve flats on something so I figured I'd do some drawings for money to kill time. Pretty much the criteria was it'd be a bust drawn like the Angie family stuff and the person could choose 1 color to be dominant (or they could pay extra for fancy rendered colors like Runic's). The first 2 didn't have tons of fancy shading since I hadn't started doing that until the 3rd one.

I was reminded of how painful it is to draw WoW shoulders haha

Aside from the collabs this month, I've been doing what I can to squeeze other stuff in between sleeping and working retail hell at the mall. I'm starting to think that I should just say fuck sleep until the holiday season is over if I wanna get anything done haha. I sadly haven't gotten to draw much (been slowly starting another BB) but here's some coloring

this is just a quickie I drew, this is a somewhat finalized design for a character I plan on using for a one shot at some point (non Void, but if it goes well I may use the story for a web comic, we'll see)

this is a promo for another job I'm working on, lineart and text done by Michael Watson. Normally I would do something really dynamic with the lighting but since it was a promo I was trying to keep the blue fairly pure which didn't really play well with the effects

The old version is on the left. This was an old pic Seel drew that I colored. Last night I wanted to color something random but was feeling lazy and oh, there's something with flats done sitting on my hard drive, yay let's color it. It was fun comparing the old version with the new one.

this was like the best job ever. I don't think I would ever say no to being asked to color Pokemon for money. It was kind of challenging because I didn't want any of the effects to overwhelm each other.

and for shits and giggles, I'm probably going to work on it more so this is like the rough idea for the cover for the next BB. If I don't rework it then that's the final version, we'll see. I was trying to keep it graphic and simple. This one's mostly going to be about Angie's family member that appeared in Drawdan's recent comics so I can get the ball rolling on the whole Angie's family and dealing with finding her mother storyline and all.

Doing lots of paid stuff I can't show off, but I'm allowed to show off this bad boy

I was pretty proud of it since it's probably the most pro looking thing I've colored

And this was just a quick doodle

Every year I write in a sketchbook about my year and draw a little sketch alongside it, this was this year's sketch. Working on tweaking Angie's design here and there, nothing ground breaking. Just made her horns a bit shorter and thicker and made the hair longer

Another paid dealie, this one with another Voider! Michael Harris did the lines and inks

And another paid gig, this one's 22 pages I believe

Say Angie, since you're doing professional work, your name is credited as the colorist, right?

So do they put "Angieness" or your real name?

They put my real name, so in any of my professional work you'll see me credited as Heather Breckel.

Continuing to color like crazy cause that's how I roll. I don't like to do posts with just 1 piece of art but I was *slightly* excited with how this one came out

This is a wrap around cover to the page I posted a preview of in the above post. I haven't done a dramatically lit dusk/dawn scene in a while so I pulled out ALL THE MOTHERFUCKIN STOPS YO hahaha after holding back for so long for the sake of more variety in my coloring it was nice to revisit it again. I also revisited texture on this one. So I pretty much revisited all my bad habits on this one haha

All the info of who did what and the logo and stuff is at http://studio-for-hire.deviantart.com/#/d3727n7 I obviously didn't draw/ink/do lettering, just colors

David drew some of Angie's family members randomly, I thought they were pretty sweet so I gave them some love

Cora, Angie's mother

Verril, Angie's grandpa

I needed a new headshot for this BB I'm doing, I just slapped colors on a doodle I posted earlier

Keepin on chuggin along, most of my free time has been devoted to coloring but I've gotten some drawing done here and there

This will eventually be happening. Pretty much this last comic I did is setting the stage for this as well as important plot things like where Angie's mom is and Angie meeting her family and such.

These were just cutesy versions of Angie and Julia for some random mini comics I'm thinking of doodling. The kids are just random kids. I like to draw cute things so I want to do a whole comic that's stupidly cute looking. And no, I will not be putting it on Void haha so rest easy knowing it will only be on my DA and I will not be tainting Void with ridiculously cute things.

And speaking of drawing cute things, down the line is a flashback that goes into the Masked Men's history and such and child Cora is in it. Angie's on there because I wanted to draw double cuteness.

This was just me relaxing. I came across an old page Lysol had done and didn't finish on my hard drive. I wanted to color it but it was like little bitty so I thought it'd be fun to attempt clean digital inking. This was just the pen tool which while clean, offers no natural line variation. It was fun to try though.

Mostly coloring cause that's what I do, have a decent sized update!

Angie's grandpa again, lines by amazingdavid. I was initially going to have the light below him for dramatic lighting but the last picture of him was dramatically lit so I went with something more basic.

this is a wrap around cover for a local comic called Hot Shot. It's pretty exciting since it's getting printed out on ginormous posters to promote the issue. It's a cross over with another local comic called Dynagirl. The lighting doesn't totally make sense since I have to keep the heroes' colors clear so I didn't get to do dramatic lighting.

The following pages are all for a comic called Demigods, the client was also responsible for WarZone, that comic I worked on with David. These pages got posted online so it's safe for me to show them off here

the hardest part about these 3 pages was doing the slight little power effect on the guy the main guy is fighting without making it look cheesy. If all goes well, this comic along with 3 other books I worked on will be available in March and I totally expect everyone to buy a billion copies. (well, 1 at least) 2 of those books I worked on with amazingdavid so you'll be double supporting Voiders!

Angie hanging out with Seel who needs to return to Void someday. Playing with colors.

just wanted to draw the beast form and wanted to make it kind of simple and graphic

I'm waiting on a collab to get going so to keep myself from trying to squeeze more serious story stuff in before it, I've just been drawing cutesy things. Because I get bored when I'm not drawing when I'm done coloring for the day and want to keep my speed up. (have to take a break from working on comics to work on comics haha) I will not be uploading these mini comics to Void, Void may crash and shatter if I uploaded a comic full of cutesy precious things, I mean the next page is going to have a cutesy adorable maze with cute little Arma threats on it. (provided I don't fail at drawing a maze, I thought it'd be a fun challenge)

I'm not really sure how many I'll do or where this will go, I'm just drawing each page as I go with the goal of "how can I make this more adorable?". Since I need to make a comic so cute it blows ELIO's mind. (I'm coming for you Elio, I must defeat you in cuteness!)

Most of my time has been devoted to coloring frantically to meet deadlines, but I've gotten some things done here and there.

These were both for the little mini comic, the little intro page was for some people that weren't familiar with Void stuff

(yes, CHAPTER 1 bwahahahaha I intend on making more of the mini comics when I'm not working on other things. I do actually have a number of collabs on the way but I'm waiting on getting these deadlines dealt with and waiting on some pages so this keeps my speed up and all. I suppose it's best I'm drawing cute mini comics in my free time instead of sitting on my ass)

I have to get some dental work done so to hold me over until I get paychecks for these books I'm on, I whored out my cutey precious drawing abilities to cover it. See guys?! Drawing cute things came in handy! ;-; I haven't been wasting my time! haha

Ooh, this looks super-fab. One nitpick I have is that the white spots on the chest cloth make the body stand out less- it has the same 'feel' as the background, so it blends together. Creating a pure black space might help readability.

Haven't had time to get much drawing done lately since I'm in crunch time deadline wise, but I managed to knock out the conclusion to chapter 2 of the mini comics.

Drawing characters with tiny little arms hugging or kissing is a ginormous pain in the ass. No idea when I'll do the next chapter, these mini comics are pretty much filler until these collabs get rolling. If I escape deadline madness alive I'll probably start the next one. The next chapter's subject manner is going to be a lot more silly.

Got a little bit of art done, most of my time has been devoted to these color jobs. I just finished a big job which was exciting and I should be finishing up another soon. There really is no feeling like finishing a book you've been working on for months.  I don't have anything I'm allowed to show off quite yet. In Void news it looks like both collabs I've been planning should be moving along soon so I may be doing more than coloring and drawing cute adorableness soon.

I pulled a lot of the colors off this from Calvin and Hobbes strips for this one. Overall cover for the mini comics.

I'd like to go through and tighten this one up slightly more, when I was in the middle of drawing it I got a phone call from my S4H boss needing a new job done by tomorrow so I was like oh shit and finished this up quick and got down to work. (I ended up not needing to rush this one since the job only took me an hour)

This was half me trying to make sure I could still draw the characters with normal non little cutesy proportions and half me picking out some outfits for a future comic. Since there's little I enjoy more than designing new outfits for every comic I draw since I'm girly like that. I tried something slightly different for human faces, on the nose anyways, to make it less anime since I felt my anime-ish noses just stood out with how my style was changing. So I actually drew out the nostrils and such which ended up being unnoticeable in the end haha

Banners I've colored (and one of them I drew) for some upcoming fun changes on the Void site, go to http://entervoid.com/board/index.php?topic=11580.0 if you would like to make your own! If you need someone to color your's, I'll gladly do it as you can see. (just email me the high res file) I'm having a lot of fun trying to make each banner look like a different person colored each one.

Another book is coming to a close so I should have more time for drawing soon since the other 2 books I'm on are mostly in penciling stages at the moment. Haven't gotten clearance for showing anything else from these jobs yet so have some random stuff.

This was an LP cover I got to color for a local rapper called Bad Habbits, the LP is at http://jbaron.bandcamp.com/album/bad-habbits I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet. This job was good training for the future since I got a phonecall late at night that something needed to be colored by the next day and I was like okay, and got it done on time.

Every few years I recolor this drawing Axer did of Angie for fun and because I can never seem to make a version I'm totally happy with.

the mini comics continue with chapter 3's 1st page, I might have another page or 2 this week depending on how my coloring work load goes. This page reminded me of why I don't do hand lettering.

This was drawn for shits and giggles and does not reflect the story, I wouldn't intentionally post a big story spoiler like this prior to doing it in a comic.

Something I was going to do for the mini comics, but then I realized I couldn't easily show the height differences with the mini characters. So I just shat this out in 30 minutes instead.

I discovered a brush I want to mess with more, this was just toying with it. A job I just got might require me to be more painterly so I need to go into brush bootcamp in the next few weeks.

Not the most exciting update but lately I've just been so swamped with color stuff by the time I get to actually draw I just want to draw cute stuff and fluff haha it's always relaxing to just chill and draw what you feel like after a hard day's work.

One thing's for certain, these have been great for getting me to draw backgrounds I don't normally do/haven't done before. Groceries are definitely a bitch and a half to draw but it's a good learning experience. I was surprised by how difficult it is to draw raw meat in straight up black and white.

Also, since several people have requested it, I will be publishing these, provided it will be a very small run, I wrote out the details at http://angieness.deviantart.com/journal/39194776/

That third panel, with Angie holding up the frosted brownies had me laughing, mostly because that face was so much that of a hopeful five year old. =)

Angie also highlights an excellent point, because dinosaurs makes everything better!

Maybe it's because it's such a contrast to what Angela is usually involved in, with all the intrigue and bloody murder and whatnot, but these mini comics have me wanting for more.

Glad you've been enjoying them :D it has been a lot of fun to put her in new and different situations. I haven't really gotten to explore how she is outside of the dramas on Void so it's been a blast. Since she spent most of her life locked away or just not allowed to experience the outside world, a lot of it is new to her so she's just like a big dumb kid sometimes.

cuuute.

Though I'm starting to get lost in the art with this. Like, the line thickness is throwing me off, and I'm mixing in the characters together and stuff.

Also, I feel this page is really zoomed in pretty close, and doesn't allow the reader to breathe

I think the easiest remedy for all this is color, as it seems fit for it.

Thanks guys! :D

Qyz yeah I noticed that, I'll try to be more conscious of my line widths and shots on the next page. Since these comics are going to remain in BW since they're getting published and I'm cheap, I need to make sure I can do what I can to make the art readable in BW. I could however sometime in the future do a special colored edition for Void since I've already discussed the appropriate way for them to be on the site with Toast. (may as well give Voiders something special :D) I'll see what I can do on that front, thanks!

Thank you Johnny!

2 more pages, this chapter should only be 1-2 more pages long depending on how I can pace the next page.

Tried to be careful with my linewidths and do less close ups, hopefully these pages have better readability.

Glad you like it, thank you :D

I've been busy busy busy

I've been making sure I draw something every day for the April drawing jam, if you want to see what I've been drawing it's all there so I'm not just posting stuff I've already posted. I have a ton of coloring stuff, just there's a lot I can't show off. I'm doing a book with STPLmstr as well but we're not allowed to show anything from it quite yet. I'm currently on 4 different books as well as a pin up gig so it's been fun learning how to jump around efficiently. Definitely thankful Void helped me with that.

These first 3 are for http://artisticenigma.deviantart.com/ I do a lot of pin up coloring jobs for him, this is a few I've done recently. The Darkwing one is smaller than the rest at request of the client

The next 3 are from an 88 page book I'm doing with David. This is going to be my third book for this particular client and my 5th project together with David. The first few pages are pretty trippy so they were fun to do. The client wanted there to be a clear difference between fantasy and reality scenes. He wanted something similar to what I did on the Harahi comic so this is essentially the same stuff as that comic with a different brush and texture. The finished versions of the first 2 pages are slightly lighter than what's here

awesome stuff as usual!

one thing though, the big orange snake in the foreground looks really flat, and it's distracting from the rest of the image. it doesn't have a lot of pattern on it to fill the space, so all i see is the color and the paper texture. maybe if the mouth inside or the eye were toned differently, it would add more depth? not sure if that'll do it, it just sticks out a lot to me.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay

I could give it a shot, hopefully I can get it adjusted before the client pulls it out of dropbox.

Been posting all my drawn art in the April Drawing thread in the art jams. I've also been doing a crap ton of coloring. I've had a pretty rocky month health wise and am not looking forward to paying off all these medical bills so I've been taking as many gigs as I can possibly handle to cover it.

First 2 are for a book called The Hero Code, I was so very excited when the client told me he wanted bright vibrant colors because I love doing bright vibrant colors like no other.

Next up Hasbro graciously put coloring book pages of MLP up and well...yes I intend on coloring them all.

And a book called Alien Apocalypse. I've never had a client specifically want a certain look and style, I fortunately managed to get it close to the examples they provided. I'm not too experienced with coloring on pencils or this style of coloring but the client is happy so I guess it's coming out well!

I really like that Hero Code stuff, mostly because I like the hero designs.  Though I wonder why they all share the same color on their costumes?  Granted that may be more the creator's thing but I find it kinda weird that three thematically separate heroes all share the same dominant color on their design.

Oh and great job on the Alien Apocalypse stuff, I find it to be the most impressive.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay

Thanks :D yeah, I was given design sheets for all the characters so I'm just going with what they were designed with color wise. Glad you like the Alien Apocalypse stuff, it's been really different for me so I'm happy it's coming out well.

Thanks Ponbiki! I'm not quite out of the woods yet health wise but I'm doing alright.

I've been extremely swamped, I don't have much I'm allowed to show but things are moving along

Another from The Hero Code, I was surprised to learn the artist is none other than Jar. (shows how awesome Void is when you randomly bump into other Voiders on jobs)

Another Alien Apocalypse page

About 9 pages left to go on the mini comic and the book will be done

Kateri's beast form because I needed to design it. The beast forms really don't differ that much aside from fur pattern and horns.

some of that art you're getting looks rough to color but you're doing a bang up job on it.

that thing you were doing with david a while back, are those all textures or is there another method to give bits more of a handcolored look. it's a very nice effect.
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on May 03, 2011, 09:22 AM
haha definitely, Alien Apocalypse is all pencils so it's pretty tough to get flats down. I've just been laying down some paper textures on top of the colors which helps give that and the pages with David a more painterly hand colored feel. I pretty much find a texture I like and either put it on overlay or soft light on top of the color layers and mess with the opacity. I normally desaturate them first so the color of the texture layer doesn't impact my colors.

Small update. After much slacking for like years, I felt like doing a proper design sheet update for Angie. While I hadn't intended on being thorough out the ass, I was having fun just chillin and drawing something that required no brainpower. I was happy to see there was quite a bit of an improvement from the previous one aside from the half assed weapons on the bottom. I also redesigned her monster form slightly in an attempt to make it look a little less cuddly and precious, Angie's design overall has been getting tweaked here and there too.

And a slightly closer shot of the 2 full bodies. Resizing the sheet to make it not 8 billion pixelsX8 billion pixels caused me to lose some detail. While surely no one really gives a fuck, I drew in those little details here and there so I'm showing them dammit haha.

Been coloring tons, I also hope to have the mini comic book done soon.

This started out as a doodle that I fleshed out. Provided I messed up where Angie's facing a little since I initially had 3 things coming at her, I'm trying to do more pieces where I'm not just doing dead on shots. Anything I could have improved on in the anatomy/angle there? I was actually going to do straight up simple cel shading there, I'm not quite sure what happened haha I just kept fucking around with the colors

This was a random 1 page job that seems to be fleshing out to a multiple issue dealie. The comic is called High Noon. I'm trying to subtly reintroduce texture when it's appropriate and I was happy with how it came out here.

More from Alien Apocalypse. Even though this has been kind of a hard job, it's been good practice. I'm also gradually picking up more tricks to speed things up. This page surprisingly didn't take that long. I have a page coming up that's like a double page spread of like a billion cars and police and explosions and stuff flying all around.

This comic just came out, it's called Sweet Lullaby. I wasn't allowed to show any of it anywhere but now the comic has been released so I can show stuff now. The artist is a fellow Voider, STPLMSTR. This is from issue 0, it was a 10 page preview for the series with 3 more issues on the way. Issue 0 was released for Free Comic Book Day.

Another page from Sensory Distortion, an 88 page epic featuring Amazingdavid on lines and me on colors. Amazingly we're quickly reaching the 25% mark since we've been doing much hauling of ass.

I also finally finished up Demigods not too long ago, it's another book by the guy who wrote WarZone and Sensory Distortion, which were projects I was on as colorist.

This book also just came out recently, Hot Shot issue #5. This page was actually colored quite a while ago, I just didn't get to show anything off until now.

And a non art post! Just wanted to inform you guys that my book is officially done being drawn! I'm just waiting on a few guest arts then off to Ka-blam. I'll definitely let you know when it's available for purchase, the final title is

It will be roughly $4-$5 not including S&H (shipping costs are up to Ka-blam) It's 52 pages total and also features some guest art from a few fellow Voiders at the end. The first 4 chapters are being put up on Void a week at a time with the final 5th chapter being a print exclusive. It was never my plan to get the chapters printed so a big thanks to the awesome people that put the idea in my head. 2 pages have been modified for print so I'm not stepping on anyone's legal toes. (the Arma threats were removed and a few places renamed)

Nothing too exciting, these 2 were mostly just trying to get a specific coloring style down for my next 2 drawn BBs, that and outfit designs for them because I always do new outfits for each comic because I'm girly like that. I'm just about all up to date on all my coloring gigs so let's see if I can get to drawing another comic. While these were both primarily for the coloring style practice, if there's any anatomy stuff you guys spot let me know, I've been doing some figure drawing when I can so hopefully it's paying off.

outfits, super exciting I know, I tried to make sure Julia's ribcage existed this time haha Color wise I'm doing something similar to the comic I'm working on with David
(http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1581/outfits3.jpg)

on my last BB people brought up I pushed the expressions too cartoony so I tried to make sure I toned them down here. I don't know if I'm going to go that red on the actual comic for the sake of my eyes.

Not much else I'm allowed to show at the moment for color gigs, just the same old coloring every waking moment thing goin on.

first thing, the coloring styles you have been learning or showing,is just so inspiring, you execute them all quite well !

i like the reddish glow on the 3 character sheet you did,has this nightly/light signs(if that's even correct) feel to it,while keeping it gritty,a bit Noire-ish,..i like it allot.
On Phill(if i have that correct)
the only main flaw i saw was the placing of here right foot, specifically the ankle placement,it does not look that grounded i think.

your expression sheet looks fine, except the right really has that anime/manga-ish ''funny'' emotion to it ,i think is the eyes that does that,it works, don't know if it was what you are going for,....

On Phill(if i have that correct)
the only main flaw i saw was the placing of here right foot, specifically the ankle placement,it does not look that grounded i think.

Phill isn't on there but thanks for the crits nonetheless, I'll watch the feet in the future. On the headshots I suppose that'll be inevitable, they're kitty people so I went with a cat like expression which does look kind of anime-ish since anime totally does the squinted eye thing a lot too. This was kind of what I'd had in mind

but I'll definitely do my best to make stuff not look blatantly anime/cartoony.

(that and since it's a flatting gig I'm not sure if I'll be credited so I don't wanna look like a huge douche by screaming about it haha)

Love the drawing of Angie and all the blood, I really like how your looser style looks with the textures.

As for the painterly ones, I think they look pretty good as well! I do think though, that everything feels very middle value. Maybe you could give it more contrast so they "pop out" a little more.

As usual, busy busy. There's a pitch I need to check on if I'm allowed to show pages, but I do have one I got clearance on. I actually got picked up for a webcomic as a colorist and it's a paying gig http://solar-salvage.com/ is the site, my work won't start showing up until page 50.

Here's a page from a pitch called Saved and is by Hilary Goldstein. It's a cool project with an interesting premise so I hope it gets picked up by someone. The artist I was working with used a lot of halftone pattern for shading which I had never colored on top of before. Fortunately there's a colorist that I love that I've been watching recently that uses it so I knew how to handle it.

And this is another job David and I are on together, the book is called Valley of the Cougars. I'm slowly easing into the style and making tweaks to it to make it perfect. It's definitely been challenging between the new style and the frequent color palette changes, but it's all a very good learning experience.

I finished drawing my next BB and it's in the coloring phase now, so I've had a little more time to draw.

Angie meeting my cat, Angie.

This was initially just a doodle in Sai, but I felt like toying with cel shading on it again. The arms are probably way too big for her body but I was overall happy with how it came out. I forgot how fun cel shading can be.

Kurtis, an old character of mine that I'm eventually going to use for a project. And when I say old, this guy was made when I was like 5 years old or something haha this was mostly done to get his colors down so the pose isn't terribly exciting but it gets the job done. I would like to pull more color into his outfit, maybe make the pants and boots brown so he's not so monochromatic.

Congrats on everything Angie--wow, this is a coincidence--I just discovered Solar Salvage yesterday and started reading--
I'll need to get caught up if I'm to see your lovely colors :)

Are all these pitches you're involved in through Studio-for-Hire?

Post by: Angie on Sep 12, 2011, 03:32 PM
Thanks Kent! Glad you're a reader of it, you'll definitely know my colors when you get to them :D

And nope, the pitches are for clients outside of S4H. One of them was for Hilary Goldstein, the former editor in chief of IGN, another pitch I'm working on is for a guy named Steve Orlando who I met through Zsa. (I haven't gotten the go ahead to share anything from that one yet)

I also started on the second part of the Winter BB series, I can't post the first part on Void until the collab with Drawdan is done.

I've posted these previews on my tumblr, so I'll share them with you as well. I'm not sure when I'll be able to post Winter part 1 as I'm waiting on Drawdan to finish drawing our collab which leads into these. Angie can be vicious looking when she wants to be, she is a cat monster thing after all.

My pages have started showing up on the web comic job! We have to fix the first few pages I'd done on the site still as we forgot to switch to RGB from CMYK before uploading them which made them upload really dark, but yeah, web comic job=awesome. I've had a lot of fun with it as I love stuff like this

Aside from the web comic work which you can find at http://solar-salvage.com/ , I've been working on many other things

Finished up work on Sensory Distortion, this is the wrap around cover

Working on the page tag

Finished drawing part 2 of Winter, I just have 20 pages left to color of it. This is just a little sequence I liked from it.

Started drawing part 3 of Winter

Thank you! I just finished drawing part 3 of Winter, just have to color it and I'm all done. Don't have too much to show because one of the jobs I've been spending a lot of time on I'm not allowed to show until it's published.

random panel from Winter part 3 I felt like coloring, no the comic will not be colored like this. The other one is just a random panel I liked, no the whole comic isn't just quarter view shots of Angie looking to the left, I'm just limited on what I can show from this comic.

Oh it's been a while since I've updated this thing! Busy as usual, on the last few pages of a massive gig and a new massive gig just fell into my lap so I've been keeping the color train moving.

Already posted in the anthology hype thread but you can see my entry with David and Frank in the EnterVOID Anthology soon

Got a few jobs going for a really awesome guy named Jamie Gambell, he's currently employing me and 3 other Voiders for some books.

Department 0. He asked me to color similar to Dave Stewart so I of course obliged because Dave Stewart is great

The colors look amazing, angie. How do you work with the artist, does he just give you a palette and you flat it out? Do you get to have any creative liberties?
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on May 20, 2012, 08:33 AM
Thanks! Well with James, the way I do flats is I just throw a bunch of colors down. I make it to where James can easily select every object, and from there he does his thing. So usually my flats end up being a big mess of neon colors haha. So the actual color choices are James, I just lay down the groundwork for him to be able to make easy selections and cut his coloring time down.

Been crazy busy! I've been slowly working on the next part to the Chuchunaa Islands between tons of color gigs. You can now find me in Image's Peter Panzerfaust, Dark Horse's Number 13, and of course James' amazing Godzilla:Half Century War from IDW. I also got to do an issue of Ninja Turtles with Marley Zarcone for IDW.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:Micro Series April
TMNT is near and dear to my heart as I grew up with the series so it was a dream come true to work on it! Marley did an awesome job on the lines, she drew the best April O'Neil.

Can't show much from Peter Panzerfaust yet as the issue I start color duties on hasn't been released yet, but these 2 have been shown online. The art was done by Tyler Jenkins.

I can't show anything from Number 13 yet and since I only did flats on Godzilla, there's no need for me to show off as the lovely detail and colors are all from him.

Here are some random panels and a page from the next Chuchunaa Islands comic, they haven't been toned yet.

Several things I worked on this month are coming out! My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic #1 (we've apparently hit 90,000+ pre-orders which is more than X-Men, The Avengers, etc. Crazy stuff!) and Peter Panzerfaust #7!

They had this page hanging in a special My Little Pony art show in NY so I can show it off

You guys should have more comics from me soon! I've made the decision to wrap Angie's story up on Void by using EnterVOID's web comic format. I hated that due to my being so busy, people have to wait months between chapters and forget what happened/get less invested in what's going on. So putting 1-2 pages up a week using the web comic format here on the site will make it to where I can keep the story chugging along at a consistent pace. It also allows me to really take my time and make it look nice, because there's no pressure of oh my god this is going to take me 6 months to put the chapter up. I got no use for points/ranks/votes anymore so the switch makes sense and I can still receive crits and comments which is the important part!

Toast has to update the web comic script for 5.0 so I'm not sure when pages will start going up, but hopefully it'll be very soon! In the meantime here's 2 pages as preview, the second without the dialogue.

Ooo, a webcomic section for Void. That sounds amazing as I've always wanted to do one, but my excuse was that I'm really bad at any sort of web design stuff. This is the perfect opportunity!

I'll really enjoy seeing your comic on here, because its always a treat to read.

Just wondering though, why you, being a professional colourist, chose to go down such a simplistic route in regards to colouring for your own comic? Is it because you want to focus more on a story and your non-colour art, or your just trying to practice this style of colouring,, or something else? Excuse me if this seems a stupid question...
Title: Re: Angie Does Art Yay
Post by: Angie on Mar 21, 2013, 08:16 PM
Glad you've been enjoying it! I had stopped coloring my comics on Void for two reasons really. One was due to time. And the other is due to wanting to focus on making my lineart stronger by staying away from coloring. I figure I practice coloring enough when I'm doing pro work, so it's healthy for me to try and bump up my BW game. Once the Chuchunaa Islands chapter is wrapped up, I intend on doing the next chapter, which is a mini chapter focusing on Cora's back story, in full color. There might be one last chapter in there somewhere that's in color, but the rest will be in black and white.

Thank you! I don't have a name for his species yet, but he's from a penguin type tribe that specializes in healing.

Ah cool. I just started to wonder because all we ever see is the back of his head and that could belong to any like.. animal or something ;) And the mask shape does not necessarily mean the face slots in perfectly ;)

Guys! Guys! I got to be a part of the 30th Anniversary TMNT special! I got to pair up with Chris Allan and Ken Mitchroney who did the art for the old Archie TMNT series. This was a huge deal for me as that comic was a favorite of mine as a kid. (it's also pretty cool that TMNT turns 30 the same year I turn 30)

Hey Angie, this is simply incredible work. Sorry if this has been asked already (didn't read the whole thread) but I'm hecka curious.

What would you say has been the largest contributing factor to your vast improvements over the years? Is is just practice? Did you find some special little tricks here or there? Stuff that worked for you?

Just looking for tips, since my work has improved at an incredibly slow rate over the years, while yours has improved by leaps and bounds!

So impressed; and doubly so that, with all of the work you have, you're still taking the time to keep this site in order! :D

Thank you very much! I think drawing comics are probably the fastest way to improve because they force you to work on everything. Obviously any practice is going to help you improve, but if you suck at backgrounds or anatomy or perspective, comics make you work on all those things over and over and over at the same time.

I don't think I have many tricks for drawing, but I do have one for perspective. I still have issues with perspective, but it improved a lot when a Voider showed me you could just rough out the perspective and then go back and fix it. This helped me a lot because I struggle with using the far more technical "start out with a grid" because I can't really visualize things that way. I still use a grid, just not until I have an idea of how I want a scene to look.

For me it also helps to occasionally completely shake up your style. I personally get super bored  drawing one way all the time, so that's a fun way to get excited and motivated. You never want to get too comfortable with art!

On the topic of progress, every few years I recolor this old commission I got from someone to see how my coloring has improved.

Uhhhhh.... they ALL look amazing to me! I love this idea of coloring the same picture over and over to practice and see how you've progressed.

...I kind of want this as a poster hahah.

Thank you very much! :D

Here's a few things. I've had very little time to draw lately but I have squeezed out some random stupid fanart, mostly headshots due to said lack of time. It's kind of weird for me to do fanart but whatever gets me drawing I guess.

Those headshots are gorgeous. One thing I've always liked about your style is the strong use of black, it's very appealing.
