News & Events / Re: The 2011 Death Royale!

Too late to stop now, I guess.

Hungarian Aliz Varga was a great surgeon some hundred years ago and well known for her beauty. Ever since her 25th birthday she's been looking for a way to stay that way. Fortunately for her, new body parts aren't that hard to come by. Nowdays she's not only a surprisingly well-preserved surgeon but also a bodysnatcher and an occasional suspect in murder investigations.
Not that they had been able to gather any real evidence against her.

The best jam ever must not die.

Also, what is a typography jam without a link to Marian Bantjes?

Apollo 1862 - a bar that serves the best toasted sandwiches in Void City. Located somewhere in the sewers. And they have a mean carnivorous plant as a bouncer.

Second best jam ever must not die.

OH MY GOD VCAST IS BACK :'D
You have no idea how fucking happy you've made me.

Okay, I may have to agree with everything Jack said. Especially with the part about lettering.

Haha, we watched Delicatessen at school when I was 14. It was the best French lesson ever.

Having seen Porco Rosso, I think I've now seen all the "essential" Miyazaki movies. But... what now? D:

6
Damn, did I just die and get to Heaven? I see people are talking about fonts in movies.
I was going to see Avatar, but if they have Papyrus for subtitles THEY'RE NOT GOING TO GET MY MONEY. Only joking. And they probably have Finnish subtitles over that papyrus anyway. White or yellow Helvetica in black boxes. Ugh.

But has anyone seen "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"? Because that was a nice movie. It was a bit disoriented and occasionally felt like it wasn't going anywhere (and yes some of the weirdness wasn't that weird, but when has weirdness in movies been weird?), but it had such wonderful landscapes, buildings, colours and things. And Tom Waits as Mr. Nick was just sweet. It was a lot better than I expected.

7
Since Christmas is kind of coming soon, I guess Fairytale of New York by The Pogues.

8
I made hot cocoa, started a beef wellington in the oven and popped this in.

It makes me so happy.

WHERE CAN I GET THIS?!
I started re-reading Hogfather for the first time in five years, and it's even better than what I remembered (obviously it's possible to have even darker sense of humour than I did when I was 15. Sort of scary, really). Death is just the sweetest old man ever.

Finally:

It was very goooood.

Ah, minimalism. And Prypjat was the town that got deserted after Tchernobyl.

edit: I will keep on posting in this jam because typography is FUN.

Blake lives in this three-room apartment owned by an old lady (who was seen in Blake vs. Prince Lepus). Blake's got one room, some other person rents the other. That's why he doesn't have a kitchen of any kind.

Saw some good films last weekend (too bad the local film festival was just after the local comic festival, I had spent indecent amounts of money on comics and could only go to see a couple of movies).

Zombies of Mass Destruction was probably the best zombie movie I've seen. It was bad in a good way, and seen in an old theatre at the middle of the night with slightly drunken crowd around you it was fun.
Metropia was not amazing but good. It kind of reminded me of "Paprika".
Kisses was very beautiful and sweet, I really recommend watching it when you want to see a warm (well, kind of) and quiet drama. (I can't believe they had put English subtitles on the first ten minutes of this.)
Just walking was great, like a Tarantino movie without being annoyingly Tarantino-like. If you like Tarantino's movies I'd tell you to rather watch "Just Walking" than "Inglourious Basterds".

SPOILER (hell, like you all hadn't seen it already...)
BTW, why was Inglourious Basterds so dull?! I think it was fine and pretty much what I expected it to be, but... It just needed more Stiglitz and The Bear Jew and borderline-bad taste. There has been enough cautious movies about WW II and c'mon if you're going to kill Hitler like that you might as well go all the way and make the whole movie more extravagant.

Primus - Antipop

Anything from The Dubliners

Other than that I've been listening to Tom Waits and Tom Waits only for the last four months. I like his hit-metal-objects-with-other-metal-objects-style. Besides, anyone using a calliope is awesome in my book.

13
La Vie de Bohème, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Jekyll & Hyde was actually very good, altough it was nothing compared to the TV series "Jekyll".

Drag Me To Hell was hilarious.

Wonton Soup 2. It was reeeally good. (Yes, I just doubled the amount of Stokoe's books sold in Finland.)

Also Tommi Musturi's "Ensimmäinen Toivon kirja". It was originally published in English, but I can't find the name of it. I really love the colours:

The second book, "Toinen Toivon kirja" is purple-yellow:

Currently re watching Dracula Gary Olman is bad ass a Dracula. And the cinematography was excellent.
I had to re watch this a while ago too. I think the best part of the movie is Tom Waits as R.M. Renfield eating spiders.

I watched five musicals yesterday. It was traumatic, so I won't talk about them. Instead, I'm using this opportunity to tell everybody how much I love Martin McDonagh's movie "In Bruges" and his short film "Six Shooter". Anyone who enjoys kind of dark(ish) comedy should watch them.

16
Just watched Wolverine. I didn't really like it much - I only went to see it because my friends wanted to see "The Hot Australian Wolverine Man" (damn, I think I missed that part completely), and well, I was kind of hoping it to at least have a nice explosion or two. During the whole movie I was like "hey - now there's gonna be something cool, they're gonna -- aah, shit, no, well maybe soon, ah, wrong again".
And this is coming from a person who has been watching "Coffee & Cigarettes" and "Down by Law" both about 7 times this year.

17
After I got over my Suicidal Tendencies phase I went back to listening to The Pogues. It's like Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphy's but good. No, it's excellent.

Art Jams / Re: Landscape Jam

Why is no one posting in this jam?

It was more of a sketch than an actual finished drawing, but I felt like doing something with ink without sketching it first that well. And I think it turned out well enough. It also had nice colours, but I still haven't figured out how to make my scanner NOT kill watercolours completely.
Okay, I'll go finish my intro pages now. Promise.

And, ablondin, those trees are awesome. They look so natural. And the way they get less detailed the further the perspective goes looks very natural too.

Not my character, but I've wanted to try realism for so long, and since today I finally had time to do something that wasn't school-related... I'm still trying to get used to doing digital paintings.

I couldn't find the name of this in english, but it's a very interesting comic from Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot, "Panier de singe".
It is kind of mean and has some jokes I'm not sure you're even allowed to laugh at. (Yet you do.) But the best thing about it is all the creative stuff like 3D-cube comics. It also sort of combines animation and comic, and is quite much fun to read.

This has answered to about all the questions I had (and more), but i have one more: what about .tiff files? I was told to use them when I was making a portfolio last spring. Or at least save the scanned images as .tiff in case they'd need retouching later.

Took me about six months, but I finally found a shop that was able to order me Wonton Soup. And it was worth the wait. I just loved it.
(in case you didn't know what I'm talking about ::))

After that I read Waldo's Hawaiian Holiday. It wasn't as good as it could have been (altough it was better than I expected it to be), but I liked it a lot. You can read the first chapter online: http://www.waldoshawaiianholiday.com/

They opened a new comic book store in Helsinki a while ago. I went there the other day and asked the salesman if he could recommend me anything "slightly weird". I ended up buying Mat Brinkman's Teratoid Heights. I was told it's like "watching a mute nature program from another planet" and I think that describes it pretty well. If you're into that kind of stuff, maybe check it out.
Here's a couple of pics somebody has of it: http://bookofdays-shop.com/?pid=2499519

Sin City. I just don't know why I haven't read this before.

Kevin Birtcher - thanks for reminding me about Garfield minus Garfield. I had already forgotten it exists. It's so much better than the original Garfield.
