You're improving loads! Just a couple spots I noticed (I'd be more in-depth, but I'm short on time):

Hands are getting there, but the first pic's open hand has no palm.

Anatomy (shape): the second and third pics of the fawn-girl are pretty beefy compared to the first pic, and also because I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a girl. Second pic has exceptionally broad shoulders, and the third pic does as well, but I'm more concerned about the third's big arms.

Little stuff, really, you're doing quite well!

Post by: jesse on Aug 08, 2007, 03:54 PM
That first pic is phenomenally better than anything I've seen you do so far. The lines and shading are cleaner, the anatomy is better, and the pose is more engaging and dynamic. Can you incorporate some of these things into your pen-and-paper drawings? The only thing I notice immediately that is subpar is her hand, which, as Pi said, lacks the proper width to represent a palm.

when you get the anatomy sorted I may fall madly in love with your work.

I can tell you've been doing some anatomy skethcs because of the side profile picture, all I can say is just keep doing anatomy sketchs and then YAY you'll be awesome : D

All I can say is I need to start saving up for a new scanner.

And just something in a pchat (mine = girl on the left) that I like how it turned out, even though I got super-lazy near the bottom and totally fucked up the anatomy D:

I love the detail that's in the kitchen, but you've gotta keep things in perspective too. Just line up all the objects in boxes and make sure the horizon and vanishing points are consistent.

ahh man i remember doing the same thing in high school french. Describing my day but really i only cared about the cartoon. I remember my teacher was such a dolt that they corrected the conjugations and accents with a red pen right in the speech bubbles. i was so pissed.

glad to see you're still working on your skills, theres improvement but watch the perspective of the figures in the last panel, the figure on the left should be bigger and in the foreground, judging by how they're positioned

wow homegurl! BIG improvement. For crits wise i would say just work on trees, clouds and smoke ;] ((yeah yeah i know they were rushed as i'm guessing you had to do that page quickly for school, but i'm just saying) and i agree with crimsonviper too with the last panel...unless shes ment to be further away then the girl next to her which means you should give the girl on the right darker lines around her to show the distance...i think angie has an example somewhere...yeah here it is http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8052/linearttutfw8.jpg

PS. I already like your style so get working on the small issues and then i will love your style.

Are you serious about getting better? Then don't wait for school to teach you new moves, Go seek em. Go get the basics and fundamental and practice them till you know them by heart. Anatomy, get that anatomy down by heart, get it from books, life drawing sessions, old master work you can even use yourself as reference for facial expressions. Enough with the manga reference, this will ultimately kill your drawing abilities and send them to the next dimension. No- Joke, get the habit of carrying a small sketchbook to draw things around you and how people react and move. Most importantly, use your whole page when you sketch, don't hesitate on your lines, use your whole sketchbook and have no mercy when you sketch. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Ive seen way too many anime artists restraining themselves to that style, dragging their lines instead of marking their lines as a single statement-in one direction-no ups--down--up--down motion using only their wrists. Use the whole arm. Want clean stuff, use a light box and draw over those sketch of yours with a single clean line picking the right line out of that mess of a sketch you poured all your emotions in. Dont wait for school to teach you heck, always try to search for knowledge on your own. Thats whats showing you as a serious and devoted artist. And also, last but not least, never, ever mimic moves from a single style. Blend various styles together AFTER you've learned the basics. Or else you'll remain someone's shadow and blend in the mass of repetitive anime artists copying an already watered down style made for tv.

Maintenant, va, et triomphe!

Something people tend to forget when doing lighting studies is that even if there's only one strong light source, there's going to be some reflected light right behind the core-shadow. Rather than render a gradient from light to pure dark, it lightens up just a bit before reaching the edge.

Keep it up with the realism studies, the animals look cute, but you need to give them more room in the ribcage.

Keep drawing everyday. Get more evolved with it as well. These drawings are very loose but look a little lazy, you look like you’re bored with most of them and quit too quickly. Spend more time with one drawing and really get into it.

Hey hunny, just curious if you actually sketch out the basic figure shapes of your characters before going over and finalizing the lines? 'cause to me it looks like you just draw it out as is~ I really think if you got in the habit of sketching basic shapes first, it'd help you out a TON. You have a really cute style going on- but don't be afraid to practice techniques that are new to you.

Start breaking those bad habits and integrate new techniques into your work. Don't even think of saying "this is my style" or "i don't use this or that" that'll be the best way to get ignored for the rest of your life. And when it comes to figure study, go for likeness and accuracy first, once you know enough on anatomy and such, then tackle stylization. Do not be too eager to jump in the style bandwagon or you will crash and burn.

Your people are looking better than ever (except that dog-head dude, who seems to have two left hands), but your background/landscape stuff could use the same level of practice that you've given the human(oid) form. Maybe try some more drawings with no people in them, just to practice the shapes of other things (cars, buildings, lamps, whatever).

You strike me as one of the most dedicated artists on this site. You're always receptive to crits, always eager to learn, and, most importantly, always drawing. Keep up the good work.

keep up with the high volume, you're improving loads!

Experiment with different facial and body types, it'll help broaden your repertoire of differentiable humans. draw old people, fat people, men, women, and everything in between. drawing from reference is always good.

do you have photoshop? poor scannings can often be fixed up in photoshop if you play with the Levels or Curves (In the menu Image > Adjustments > Levels etc)

I just quickly did a Levels adjustment, see what it can do!:

I also suggest playing with lineweights in your art to give it more of a 3-dimensional feel, a thicker, heavier line suggest that part is closer to the viewer, while a thinner lineweight does the opposite and pushes it back. I think this may help pieces like your cute little cake slice, keep it up!! Its rad seeing continually practicing!

the second panel is a bit vague as to what is happening in it. When i took a second look at it i realized theres a carrot in the trap. You shouldn't cut out key props if you're trying to convey a message to your reader. The only time you can cut it is after you conveyed your point and all key props have been accounted for or will be accounted for.

I think you should try more screen tone stuff, I like how that turned out. And the watercolors are lovely! Everything is just incredibly adorable too. Looks like your trying out a whole bunch of different techniques, which is cool. Your stuff always seems to have the feeling of a sketch to it though, little mistakes in the line work can be corrected in photoshop (which you shouldn't be scared of!) Anyways, keep drawing, keep posting stuff, and you're awesome.

Ah man your artwork is awesome.  Cat hats!  Wish I had one, but I'd probably embarrass my wife more by wearing it in public than I do now w/out it  :P

Love your animals, particularly the cats.  Do have one crit, the girl w/the cat hat seems a little unbalanced the way her feet are.  Would really enjoy your stuff if you did some animated work w/it.  Maybe stop-motion w/the cutouts'd be cool?

I like flash myself and think more people should use it, so that's a neat one.  It kind of reminds me of webcomics like scary go round or anders loves maria.  If you haven't seen those I'd recommend them, especially SGR.

Then again you're probably not old enough for those so forget I said anything! :p

I love Anders Loves Maria! I actually went through and read it, beginning to end a few days ago. It's really interesting to see how the artist changes her style over the two years.

I just never really grasped the animation aspect of flash. I guess it was because I was just kind of guessing what to do but it all seems very confusing. I guess I'll have to actually read how to use it some day soon.

Really?  I think it's pretty straight forward.  Editing frames is kind of awkward but between the speed and onion skinning I think the only other alternative is toonboom studio, and that one's not very popular.  Maybe graphics gale, but that's for sprites.
Hmmm, I wonder if there was ever an animation jam I don't know about?  I realize they all got killed, but that would be interesting.

That comic font you used fits in really well w/your style, nice pick!  I like how the muted colors reflect the time of day but they don't bring down the feeling that is emanating from what the dude's sayin'.  Ah, how well I remember how it felt to be awkward back in the day...

About the phone comic, I think it would have been nice to show where the guy was standing.. I was a bit curious about that since all we see are clouds. perhaps in one of the panels you could have a shot showing that.
The Avey Tare picture is cute :> Maybe you could bring some more detail into the guy on the left's shirt/chest area? It is a bit lacking in interest in comparison with the rest of him.

My first try at digitally coloring scanned lines, I don't think it turned out too terrible! I don't know why I had so much trouble drawing the way far left dude was standing :/ I'm going to color this traditionally too, sort of a compare/contrast sort of thing. Four lonely posts.  Poor posts.
I like the fact that you try something a little different with each of these, but that last girl, the one who seems to be alright, I like that one.  Is that the same medium as above, colored pencil or cg or something?  The dress is flat, and maybe it's the small size, but it looks more dimensional than the others.  Please don't ever go by just wafer, that has a religious connotation that would bring up certain memories of a holy food poisoning incident.  Not to mention that aside from the feet it's probably the most "normal" proportions I've seen from you.  Then again, I kind of like noodle arms.  Dunno.  Dunno.

This stuff is looking cool, but I think maybe you could push the details a bit more on your cityscape background there, like have some birds flying around, and a binocular viewer thingy right next to her. Just some small stuff, don't take this as me saying "Overload the pic with stuff!", I just think that pic needs a bit more.

Other than that, I'm liking what you've got.

You must have been joyously inspired by the webtoon Adventure Time. If you have not seen it my opinion is you should. I like looking at your art. You must be right handed. Be Carefull. Working straight from thumbnails to a computer can realy be a trying experience. I've had to get out my second hand store X-ray reading Light Table as of Late. It just makes the Transition so much easyer.
Man Posting in this place has realy been wierd for me. For like a month now I've had to log in twice in order to get on the Board. And all kinds of thing have been sort of hippity slippity.

But all in all V.W.; this has been a wonderful place. It has improved me to a vast degree. As a person as well as Artist. If I ever get something going more than this Janitorial Income; this place is gonna see a sisable donation from moo-ah.

I look forward to seeing yoiur progress. Remember I'm still on dial-up untill I get this Comp. payed off. I can't get everywhere, but know; most of the time, I love everyone.

I'm like Nymphomaniac on a Saddle-horn, with the reality that your stuff has a starkly Digital/Traditional Contrast. It is really dramatised in that last piece there. If you can manage to keep that consistant, it should prove to be an alluring style to get you paying work from if anything else. But you must be Consistant with that theme for it to work.

Oh snap! This is adorable! The only problem I'm seeing right now though is she's not really reading too well as a goth, if you darkened her look up a bit it'd make the comic work a lot better. You know subtle things, a darker gradient on her dress, a darker grey on her nightgown and some black in her room, darker patterns on her outfits. (Though on page 4 a Victorian wallpaper pattern or a lace pattern would probably work better) Aside from those slight clarity issues this is a really nice comic and awesome addition to the book.

So sweet and adorable!! I really wanna see those goth-tones played up more, like Jack said, but I also really like the super white world she lives in. If you play up the contrast between her darkness and the world around her, I think it'll really distinguish itself.

I agree with fowlie... even though I myself haven't done comics here, I think the only way you're ever going to get a good feel for how to do comics on Void is by actually doing a comic for Void. Pull a character out of your head and go with it! :)

I use microns, or steadtler for fine lines.

sets like these are pretty sweet. You get a variety of widths that way.
or
(http://www.quiltbug.com/images/pigma-pen-set.jpg)

most places seem to carry either of those brands, but if you happen to come across faber-castell stuff then I recommend trying that out

That's a badass marker. I also use a black prismacolor marker, or a black copic sketch marker for lines and larger areas of black personally. I'd say to go get one of everything and see what suits your fancy. I think you should try a brush marker fo sho... I think you'd like it.  I went to dickblick.com and ordered one of every black marker I could find and just tried them out... but hopefully our art supply store will have a good selection too. Lemme know what you pick up!

thats great, i love her face, but it's a bit cluttered with all the lines.  And some shoulder movement from the retching would have really driven the point home of her throwing up.

Haha, is that another t-shirt design? Because i'd wear that one.

and i'm not sure how people would like this on a t-shirt, i was doodling some trial images in one of my classes and the kid sitting next to me was like WHAT THE HECK THAT'S SO WEIRD CHECK THIS OUT PERSON SITTING BEHIND ME LOOK WHAT KSEY DREW SOOO MESSED UP, but i appreciate the thought, haha

Your art is continually getting better! The touch of realism in the last set of studies looks really good, do more!

Also, like unclesex, I think you could also benefit from using finer lineweights to draw in details and textures. Usually I see you do a lot of work at one lineweight, so experimenting would be good!

out of all the pictures i've seen of yours in this thread, i think this picture is the best. all the others, in comparison, now looks like forced attempts to make a certain "personal style" work. granted, the other pictures on this thread page are all improvements over the stuff posted a few thread pages back, but this particular picture seems more natural and personal than the line nose inverted bowl face look of most of your drawings.

can you share your impressions and intentions behind drawing this particular drawing this way? i'm curious to know what you think of how this one turned out.

I actually really don't like that picture, because I feel like it's not really my own. granted, it looks good, but I used a reference picture for the point of view and face anatomy, and drew a lot of inspiration from two other artists (http://milkbbi.co.nr/ and http://pttrdy.livejournal.com/). I actually considered not even posting it anywhere because I don't feel good about it at all.
I'm actually not proud of a lot of my work and the whole inverted-bowl-line-nose junk is my least favorite. I'm trying to make things work, so it's pretty awkward as of now.

there's no shame whatsoever in using reference pictures for drawing, neither is it for being inspired by other artists, and "borrowing" techniques from them. most people hark that a "real artist" can draw perfectly without any sources or references, but that's very difficult and rare, and shouldn't be taken as gospel, anyways. a great genius knows how to hide their sources.

i know this bit of advice has already been said in many other threads, probably also in your thread here, but i'll say it again just to be annoying:

forget trying to find your style. stop trying to make your drawings so original (or, for other people, so similar) from other artists and styles. though not necessarily easier, the better and ultimately more rewarding method for becoming an effective and original artist is to first learn how to draw realistically. i don't mean shoot as far as drawing photo-realistically all your life - just enough to render figures and scenes convincingly (how far that is, i don't know). at least in my opinion, all artistic styles are simplifications and abstractions of reality. once the reality is understood well enough to be drawn effectively, then the style naturally follows.

hell, that "learn reality first" shpeal isn't the ultimate advice. there's a million examples out there where it doesn't apply - Delya, for example, began drawing nothing outside of the Rayman aesthetic cannon. over time, she evolved out of that and made her own style out of it, that now doesn't look anything like a Rayman cartoon. a more general example is the big fat group of void artists who started drawing in an anime/manga style of some sort - even in that crap-ass How To Draw Manga book style. the common thread of everybody here is they kept going with it, and eventually grew out of it and into their own.

... then again, no one person has the ultimate advice for anything, probably me in particular. without showing anything of my own crap, i'm sure a lot of people here would find anything i say highly suspect.

[lecture mode off]
Title: Re: Wafer draws nsfw
Post by: vanilla wafer on Nov 01, 2009, 12:03 PM
I do a lot of more realistically rendered pictures (just not normally people) but I don't even bother scanning them because I feel like they're boring and nobody really wants to see them.
My favorite things though, is style. I can see the most beautifully, technically drawn picture and not like it because it has no style. That's why finding my own is so important to me and my art. I was also one of those who were grown from a how-to-draw-manga book which is where that feeling probably stemmed from, and I really really dislike those cookie-cutter anime artists.
But anyway, for right now, I guess I'm young and just trying my best to find my own with my art and my style. I look back at what I did a few pages ago and I am almost embarrassed by it and how good I thought it was at the time. I can only improve, right?

edit: sorry, not so gud with words and this is rambly

I'm gonna play the devil's advocate and agree with you, wafer.  Please, no one flame me...But I completely agree with the previous post.  I think Void as a whole is taking technical aspects way too seriously.  To be honest, creativity and appeal matter way more to me.  I still agree that you'll never get anywhere without knowing basics, but still...In the end, I think the appeal is way more important than how technically impressive a drawing is.

You have to know how to spell properly before you can spell things incorrectly on purpose. The right way to go about this is how Wafer's doing it, doing the technical practices despite not wanting to. Not to turn this into a critique of your work Sirius, but this does seem to explain a lot of the huge problems you still have with your work. Void takes technical fundamentals seriously because the majority of the art world takes fundamentals seriously. It's a little closed minded to believe that appeal and skill are mutually exclusive.

Kasey, you're doing it right by at least doing the not-fun work, and nobody wants to focus on technique in highschool, so keep up what you're doing.

I know my art has tons of problems.  Don't think  I don't realize them and strive to fix them.  I'll admit I am one lazy ass artist, pretty 1-D in my approach.  I will also admit I've been concerned more about character design and shit way more than anything else, but I've improvec a LOT this year, regardless.  I may not do too many life drawings and such, but I have done some and am currently in sculpting class which has helped me a LOT.

I make terrrible comics, I am not that good an artist, I'm only at this level because I draw an almost unhealthy amount of time each day.  I enjoy creating unique and interesting character designs and writing stories more than anything else, and I understand I gotta branch out one of these days.  That's why I'm here and I'm gonna take this whole thing way more seriously once I make a passable entry.

Anyways...I want you to tell me my  art's flaws, Jack.  I'm interested, not trying to be an asshole...Just curious.

I didn't mean to start a fight or anything, and I understand where you're coming from I was pretty much off in what I said...I just feel sometimes that there isn't enough crits on the actual creative content.  Technical aspects certainly hold more water, but I appreciate a unique style over pretty much anything.

Now now, please keep the topic on Wafer's art. If you want Jack's opinion on your art please ask him through PM.

Coming back to Wafer's art, it's tough to critique something like "creative content," because it's so terribly subjective. This is the blessing and curse of all artistic endeavors.

Person A looks at VW's (I'm using this from now on, I just thought it up) art and says, "Wow! It's so cute and adorable, I love it!"
Person B looks at VW's art and says "Gross, it's so empty and predictable and without substance, I hate it!"

Both could be seen as correct, but it's the opinion and values of the viewer that will always be the issue. Therefore, it's up to the artist to decide what direction they want to take their "style" in, and what goal they want their art to achieve. We as critics can give suggestions and help it along (especially if their artistic content is trying too controversial, different, or even similar to the current culture), but the best thing that we can do is help with the execution of the idea, not the idea itself.

Once the technical aspects of the execution are competent, the artist can do anything they want to achieve anything they want.

no matter how subjective the critiques are, I still love to hear them. I love getting feedback, positive or negative.
also, I feel like it's getting a bit wordy in here, I'll have some new art up tonight!

I think I'm gonna need a bit to recover from that one...

Hmm it's cute but I feel the lines look a little sloppy.  Like it's especially noticeable on the page with the headshot.  The world they're in could use a little more...dimensionality.  Like you suggest it in some places, but because there's an overall flatness to it all it seems rather incomplete.

You have learned the art of the headshot well, grasshopper.

Hello! Sorry I've not been around... I've been put to work by my art class, I'm in the cool-kid AP class and they give us like, an assignment a week and they're all really huge and our teacher expects a million hours on each one so I haven't been able to do anything finished just for myself in a very long time. :( So here's some stuff from my sketchbook.

Post by: Sariel on Dec 08, 2009, 03:22 PM
i see great improvements with this batch. particularly, you've avoided the concave bowl face issue that i think was your greatest weakness. the cat stipple is quite snazzy, too.

i'm curious about what the missing image is. i hope that gets resolved. you've already tried deleting that pic from the gallery, and resubmitting it? it meets all the file uploading requirements?
Title: Re: Wafer draws nsfw
Post by: vanilla wafer on Dec 08, 2009, 03:36 PM
The thing is that, it's not even hosted on flickr! It's on tinypic... I tried posting it from facebook, tinypic and photobucket and it still gives me the flickr error! I have no clue why.
Title: Re: Wafer draws nsfw
Post by: Sariel on Dec 12, 2009, 01:01 PM
my best guess is somehow the image file shares a path name with flickr, if that can even happen ... maybe change the filename, then resubmit to the file host?

That one's right, the filename has something to do with it.
I've had that same problem.

The playing cards are so nice. You should just do a painting on an entire deck, then make all of them a single piece.
