Title: Void Realism Jam
Post by: Angie on Jan 25, 2009, 08:32 PM
So yeah, I got inspired by AVT to try my hand at digitally painting a more realistic Angie and thought it might be fun to see other people give it a shot. The guidelines are

-Try interpreting a Void character as realistically as possible. You can use whatever materials you like with the exception of doing photo manipulation. Can be BW or color. It's totally cool if this doesn't look like the most 100% realistic interpretation ever, push yourself and do what you can. By all means it doesn't have to be just a plain portrait, push yourself to do different expressions!

-Must be a finished piece of work.

-MUST BE A NEW PIECE, A WEEK OLD AT THE MOST

Additional fun stuff if you don't want to draw a Void character

-If you don't want to draw a character and just want to try your hand at realism or a self portrait that is a-okay!

-Doesn't have to be a portrait, if you want you can try to do backgrounds, give us a real Void city scape if you like.

Trying to keep it kind of broad so people will have fun with it and want to participate and all that

A moose has a different, heavier sort of head, and their antlers are totally different.

This piece has been put on the backburner for a little bit, I started this painting around the start of 09 (maybe mid-earlier January) but the progress was interrupted by my battle, so i didn't finish it till now. It's actually one of the few digital paintings I'm really satisfied with because two years ago, I had no idea how to draw people :\

haha damn it's not a photo? very convincing Airlight.  And Mister Kent that's looking good, don't worry if it's not ultra realistic. The whole point of the jam is to try to draw something as realistic as you can. Since none of us are Rembrandt, it never hurts to get more practice in and I'm trying to get people to try something a little different than what they normally do.

I took that as a compliment xD. It was closely referred off of a existing window photo that my dad took in new york. I copied the generalized perspective grid off of it and a couple of the building details that I brushed into linewise, and threw up some imitation textures onto it. In reality its a very lazy textured painting that was cleaned up carefully, then blurred and contrasted to the extreme.

Rob's face is looking hella realistic and those eyes are impressive! You even gave him pores; that worked really well! The hair still needs to work, but DAYUM! XD
you just spurred some inspiration in me; i gotta try this sometime.

Thanks-- I know I got blatantly lazy on certain portions of the hair, but his hairstyle was already somewhat unrealistic as it is o__o I guess I got fed up with trying to make it look believable. Can't wait to see what you come up with, yourself!

Might do a couple of realistic cityscape type things for this JAM later on! Portrait was a fun practice.

I started this around 11 and I've been tinkering and playing with it obessively ever since. Dear God, someone stop me.  I took a screenie and thought I'd share before I hop into bed- The photographs/drawings on the left are kind of my 'reference' pics (since I read somewhere that good realism is usually based off an actual face.

I didn't know Agent Black's real name was Harvey Milk.

I really like this, but something feels off about it. I think it's the ear and the broad forehead, but we're probably losing out on something that disappeared on the transition from source to black and white.

Two key things I used as reference ; Heheh, I watched Buffalo '66 not too long ago and Christina Ricci kind of caught my eyes, especially how she looked so tired and 'dragged', so I 'borrowed' some bits of her face.

Coloring wise, I used JDillion's painting tutorial

While you're drawing is good Qyz, it could probably use a little touch up to make it more 'realistic'.  I feel like it still has a cartoony quality to it and perhaps some shading to give it some sort of three dimensional feel would help.  Also I don't think her shape is quite right.  This is my problem too, but I've been staring at pictures of bikini clad women lately (creepy?  or just plain sexy?  :D) and I'm starting to recoqnize the shape more clearly.  Try copying some photographs...of bikini clad women.

Also for Rookie's work, the face seems great but it would have been cool if you had follow suit with the rest of the body.  It just seems too unadorned by comparison.

Qyz, her ears are FUBAR and her hands are a bit too small, but if you do all of your work like this from now on I'll be so wildly happy with you you won't believe it. This looks like a pretty goddamn good start to a new style.

Again, cause it's a made-up ...thing. It's really impossible to not look cartoony without making it not look like the character. :\ Haha I've tried a lot, trust me. Also I used thick lines which doesn't help I'm sure.

and then at the tail end of the weekend, varying levels of realism and cartooning.

Title: Re: Void Realism Jam
Post by: Angie on Apr 25, 2010, 08:08 AM
Damn, that's looking nice Pi! Well the first big thing I have to get on you for that my figure drawing teachers got on me a ton for is never treat the background as an afterthought. Like I know that the point of figure drawing is to improve on drawing your figures and stuff, but it's helpful to be practicing how the figures interact with their surroundings. Your anatomy is looking pretty spot on, just occasionally the heads look slightly too large for the body like in the 4th drawing. The only other thing I'd work on is your shading. It's looking pretty good in most of the pictures, but in the last few drawings your tones are all hovering in the middle range.
Title: Re: Void Realism Jam
Post by: (Pi) on Apr 25, 2010, 11:06 AM
Mkay. They're actually out of chronological order, so the last ones were done earlier. Good to know that I've improved at pushing the values, haha. I'll try including the backgrounds/props more, that sounds like a good idea.

My professor said that my biggest issues have been with edge control and making sure they're not too sharp. Is it just a practice issue, or are there tricks I can do to ease up my edges?
Title: Re: Void Realism Jam
Post by: F3E on Apr 29, 2010, 11:56 AM
@Pi

Nice life drawings! You are doing well in shading, may I ask how long every drawing took? You really should practice some Bodyparts, especially knees! I also see a big improvement between the first and last drawings, go on with it!

Not my first ones and definitely not my best :P but I think I remember the requirement of up-to-date art in here and my best ones were drawn half a year ago. Every drawing took between 7-15 minutes. Life Drawing was for 2 hours (too short if you ask me :/ )

Nice work, man. I'd like to see how your really extended work comes out. Almost all the ones I put up took anywhere between 3-5 hours, some in class, some at home. They've all been assignments, so I haven't been focusing on specific bodyparts, although I might try that after the semester is over.

Something that I've been thinking about is the difference between what I've been seeing here (and what I've been "taught" here as well) versus what I've been shown in class. Here on Void, I think we've all taken a sort of "outlines first, then shading" mentality, which a classmate of mine claims is "an illustrator's style." In class we're encouraged to block out the shadow shapes first, then slowly refine it by adding more shadow layers and highlights, which I suppose would be "the fine artist's style."

For anyone else with this sort of training, have you found any advantages/disadvantages compared to the lines-first method? To be honest, I'm finding stronger results with the shadows-first method, but I'm worried that it doesn't transfer over as well when you don't have a model and strong lighting to reference from.

Pi, I'm just terribly curious, but I'd like to see something recent you've done that's not a life studies thing, something from you.  Because, well, man I don't know how to say anything without sounding like a jerk, but yeah, I'm just curious, not in a bad way but I wanna see what you can do.
Title: Re: Void Realism Jam

@Pi

Probably there will be never a chance to, at least not in life drawing. 3-4hour life drawings are very unusual around here. I have some portraits I drew digital with a photo ref. But, seriously, digital painting of photo refs is not really significant for someones abilitys. Link1 (http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr304/F3E_album/Digitalart/House72dpi.jpg//url) Link2 (http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr304/F3E_album/Digitalart/090420_Selbstportraitangry2redu.jpg//url)

I prefer the the line method. But it's more an ability and tendency thing I think. I would call myself an prospective illustrator, so the illustrative way seems to fit ^^. Just use the way of drawing you like most. I don't think there is a perfect/best way to do life drawings. In the end it's only a question of taste.

Now that I'm back in school, most of the drawing I've done for the past few months has been for class. Some of it for my life drawing class, and some for my story development class. Neither is probably what you're looking for. The closest to finished thing I've done lately was the toon I did for an OC tournament on dA. You're a resourceful guy, I'm sure you could find it. It's not that great (and still unfinished, haha), but that should give you a pretty decent idea of what my stuff looks like.

Awesome! Posting late to an art jam.

So, I kind of wanted to experiment with doing something like this with Edgar. I used mostly reference from a coyote since that's what his facial structure looks closer to.
Wow... this looks really weird to me. I don't know how successful I was with the picture, but it was still rather fun to do anyway.

Theres realism and theres relying on the source straight out of a picture,

the nose on her is either off a bit or her anatomical right eye is is too far away.

Down the line you should know when to ditch the original source material in favor of making a picture work.

Everything here is working you just need to tweak it with a few liberties if you can dare it.

Your body is successful but the head and face just needs a bit of careful tweaking.

You'd be surprised how much geometry goes on in a person's face, it gets rather engrossing and becomes very fun to master.

Bringing this jam back from the grave because there's a lot lotta new characters I'd like to see realistically

unfortunately, you only get as far as semi-realistic with me, because I suck.

Though it's pretty hard to tell in my style because I draw everyones eyes like they're dish-plates, Wizzie's eyes are supposed to be pretty big in comparison to her human peers (and she wears a lot of eyeliner which makes 'em bigger too).

Just a small tip, unless you want her to look really old, soften up all those lines in her face. They make her look all wrinkely. I usually draw them in myself when I draw faces for correct muscle structure, but unless you're drawing someone who is 60+ then it looks a bit odd on a young freshfaced woman with phasing abilities.
