I love this concept so much. I’ve wanted to do an RPG character like this for a while, I think you’ve inspired me to try it as well. Your thumbs are also fantastic, I can clearly see everything that’s going on even in the thumbnails, and that speaks to the quality of your storytelling ability. Can’t wait to battle him!

Thank you guys, I’m proud of you all, and I look forward to maiming and killing you in 2021.

I love what you're going for here. As Bobo said, get a person in there. He lands outside of town, maybe the city is on the other side of a lake and there's an old dude fishing, reacting to his sudden appearance. Box checked.

I'd like to see more attention paid to light sources, your shading is haphazard. On the first page we see the sun behind him, which you actually seem to have indicated as a spot black for some reason? But none of the shadows are following that light source, he still has hatching just sort of all over and around him. You don't have to do dramatic cast shadows in every panel, but keeping your primary light source in mind at all times will inform where your shadows go when you do render them. And remember that the sun is a blindingly white light, so generally in a broad daylight setting like this, where you aren't emphasizing a sunrise or sunset, you may want to avoid a solid outline on the sun altogether and leave it to the colors.

As much as I love his squinty eyed, underbite expressions, be careful not to rely too much on the extreme closeups when they aren't serving the story. Or rather, consider making those closeups much smaller panels. Because the extreme close on his eyes on page 2, while a great expression, throws off the pacing of the scene a bit. Then again, maybe he's thinking or saying something there that warrants such a long focus on that panel. Just things to be aware of.

You're on track to have a great intro and character. He's already inspiring me to make a new character just to play with him.

I see a lot of potential in this little dude, and you clearly have some good cartooning skills. Let's see some thumbnails or something!

Hey, thanks!

That looks much better. Such a small change really makes a difference. You'll have this thing submitted in no time!

I'll echo what Duel said,  it's refreshing to see an incubator start out with some pages!

Looking at your first page, I have notes. The full tier panel showing the portal appearing works, but the thickness of the gutter between it and the second panel tier really breaks up the sequence and implies a longer passage of time than you want. Then panels 2 and 3 lack any elements that inform their relationship to each other. Maybe you'll be showing the portal behind her in panel 3, which will help a lot. I would also use the cat. It's startled in panel 1, so maybe show it bounding away as she comes through the portal, either into the background or, better yet, right towards us.

Can't wait to see these pages come together!

Is there a particular panel(s) which you find are the greatest offenders of the "Egyptian" angles?

Cool concept! I like that you’ve given her just enough of a backstory to play with. You’ll do well in Void. Can’t wait to see some pages.

Oh man, these are all awesome! Thanks Hellis, for taking the chill off! Lol

Also, super cool gift for Fukuro and Gregly, Shen!

Thanks for stepping up, Elf Squad! To those whose slack they picked up... I think you owe your Secret Santa target AND your Elfen saviors a piece!

VOID Characters and Comics / Re: Challenges Thread

Someone fight me before I realize what a terrible idea it is.  I'll do whatever, just needs to be quick with a quick deadline. You can see all my boy's options in the open challenge box. Retribution is alright if that's still happening, I can play both sides. Annihilation, if you're an adult.

You have until Monday before I decide to do something else.

Alright. Let’s go.

Put my name in the hat, and I'll also join the Elfen Army Reserves, you know, for the orphans.

Gimme your best Smile, doin something vile (Or cute) with one or more of your own characters. And put some effort into it, cuz I'm gonna put some effort into yours.

THE INCUBATOR / Re: Starting Character (3 options)
« on: Nov 21, 2018, 05:53 PM »
I never knew an object head was a common archetype, but I think I get the idea. Creativity block, the math teacher, is my pick. It's funny, you started off saying you specifically want to practice drawing fight scenes, but all three characters seem expressly geared toward not fighting (runs away, evades). Only the math guy says he actually fights, but still, nothing about his design says "fighter". There's plenty to be said for subverting expectations, but a very valuable design sensibility is to communicate who a character is through their appearance. Posture, expression, wardrobe. So he's a math teacher who wants to be an artist but isn't any good, and he happens to have a block for a head. And he's prone to instigating brawls. Ok. Does the block head mean anything? Is it a visual metaphor, or is it arbitrary? Why does he always get into physical confrontations? Do his math skills serve him outside the classroom? Why is he a sloppy fighter? Wouldn't he be able to calculate trajectories and use algebra and physics to gain an upper hand against his more dim-witted opponent's? Why does he dress like a butler?

See, these are all questions you need to answer, and when you do, you'll find your character, and they'll start to write themselves.

I don't expect you'll ever see this, but if you do, let's see some comics.

This is great! I have no idea how to make YouTube videos, but I’ll look up some YouTube videos about how to do it.
