THE INCUBATOR / Re: THE UNIVERSE
« on: Aug 22, 2014, 08:39 AM »
Hmm.... but by this logic, wouldn't a more important question be "If it's the Universe... why is it shaped like a human primarily?

The universe is not shaped like a human.. the humans are shaped like the universe.. DUN DUN DUNN! *mindblown*
That aside, dont let my small quirks take away from what is a great character ; im looking forward to see how other fighters tackle the challenge of fighting the universe

FED - Shooting fire from it's dick seems like a metaphor for a venereal disease  xD;;

.. that is an excellent point..  forget what I said, keep the hotpants on ;)

I am so sorry...

But then again, I am the only who thinks he should go nekkid? He's the universe, surely he would be comfortable in whatever shape he possesses. Also, you can take credit for teaching other artists on the site anatomy by forcing them to draw schlongs. And butts.

EDIT:  sorry for getting a hang-up over this, but it's the universe..  what does it need clothes for? Can't it shoot fire from its ... "neither regions"?

GO FOR BROKE! / Re: Brubaker's Stuff
« on: Aug 05, 2014, 09:47 AM »
A very smart man once told me how the "environment" (rather than "the background") is just as important as the characters. He said;

"(..) the visual higher archly and environments is where things tend to break down, when they do break down. I totally get this cause when I started drawing I was doing it for the characters not the mailbox in the bg behind him. But there are times when the just abbreviating the environment kind of takes away from your fun characters. (..) Now let's not get anything thing twisted time for this stuff is a huge factor so save it as much as possible. (..) I don't think people need to go in and draw every stone in an enviornment though, but what yo do show just bring it to the level of your characters."

My art, like yours, has always been very character-oriented, but the above thing really opened my eyes; It's doesn't help how fun or interesting your characters are if they are drawn against a poor or uninteresting background (sun, clouds and grass.. ouch!); In your comic, it just about works in the first panel because of all that is going on (and the little bee!), but the rest is just clouds sun and grass. If your characters inhabit a forest of somekind, your panels should be "littered" with rocks, mushhrooms, moss, Elk in sunsets etc etc. A background is not a plane wall behind your characters, it is the environment (the background, middeground, foreground - 3D space) that your creations inhabit.

And yes, they are a pain to draw at first (trust me, I know) and there really is no easy way out of it (hiring an assistant would only stunt your artistic growth), but trust me on this; it is really great fun to  see a completed page with characters interacting in a believable environment that you have drawn and created from scratch. And that's before you even get into the endless sightgags and in-jokes you can put everywhere..

Sorry, just a few silly questions here.. You say NO VOID Characters; but I can still place my story in Void if I like, right?

And how far can I push the "NO VOID Characters"-thing? Can I mention them in text? Can I risibly suggest? Can I draw a VOID Character on a t-shirt someone is wearing?

.. or does NO simply mean NO and I should get with the program?

I guess it's a style-issue; Either you don't like it, or, like me, you love it! :D Cartoony characters are my thing, and I can really dig the look of your drawings. That said...

Backgrounds, backgrounds, backgrounds.. You need them if you want to grow up to be a strong man like me. Your hatchings help, but the odd carpet, couch, wallflower, a line to divide the floor from the walls... anything to bring more life to your comic and make it feel like your characters inhabit a living, breathing world would be mucho appreciated.

Also, posing and camera-angles.. I can't help noticing all your characters / drawings are posed facing left, right, and in 2/3rds shots ; Where's the full face-on? Where's the zoom in, zoom out, birds-eye, frogs-eye view? Experiment with your panels, right now you are suffering from the "talking heads syndrome"  (see below)

Try something like this instead:

They are still "talking heads", but we now have a background, moving of camera (zoom in, zoom out) and movement / "acting" from the characters. Much more interesting to read at once :)

mmm, i like.. then again, everything football ("soccer") always gets my approval :P

Short feedback; I do miss a (club) jersey; even as retired he should have some more marks to make him stand out as a footballer; Put a number on his shorts and give him the official Void City FC* shirt or just put a giant number on his back aswell ; as for the character himself, I do like his design, another "run-of-the-mill" footballer, his blandness and lack of personality is really (IMHO) a good thing in this case (..ever seen a footballer give a post-match interview? So bland and boring it makes politics sound interesting)

As for the comic, it's hard to make out being so half-finished, but from what I can make out, it looks good for pacing, and nice change of camera-angles; Really looking forward to see this design submitted (if only to know I am not the only fotball-interested person around these parts)

* there is no such thing as "Void City FC", so you'll have to design the jersey yourself ;)

"In a perfect world no one's pages would be over 600X900" ; Personally I set my comics to Width 800, that usually fits well on the screen; Length isnt't really an issue thanks to the magic of scrolling

What he said.. pretty basic; there's nothing wrong with your skills ('cause dude, this looks great!), but haven't we seen the "sword-wielding-bad-girl-with-a-jacket-and-weightlifting-gloves" oh-so-many times before?* I'd really wish for a makeover a more "personalised" style, something that makes her stand out from the crowd in way of fashion.. just my two cents :)

Julz, that's awesome! Can't wait for it to come around!

The point of the tournament is to scar, not bring physical/emotional angst to the character. That comes later.

There will be a physical/emotional angst-tournament? sign me up for that :D

You need a complete submission. If you happen to get your submission completed in time, you can enter with that character. We will be reviewing it just like any other normal submission, so if you plan on going that route make sure to do your best :)

heya; thanks for the reply; Just a quick (dumb) follow-up question: If I manage to draw and submit a character before the deadline, but, because the Void Council is busy having fancy beach-parties, driving cool sportscars and judging wet t-shirt contests (because that's what you guys do, right?) , the character is not approved before tournament deadline, is it then possible to "withdraw" the character-submission? Or am I stuck with a character on the site which I then have to retire / deathmatch?

Quote from: GOD DAMN IT ROFLQU

If you get a character in time, you're more than welcome to join.

Yay! Do I have to make a "complete submission", ie. backstory and all that or can I just submit a character especially for this tournament (and then kill him off without remorse afterwards, per usual)?

TOURNAMENT!! *squeeeal*

Sooooo... can I whip up a character for this, or is it only for the coooool people who already have a (living) character on the site?

mmmm... murder..

I'll stab and quarter the character portrayed above - Just give me time to get out of the office ^^

EDIT: Is there like a time-limit on this? Obviously I can't be dragging my heels for days, but there is no "Post within 12 hours or suffer the shame of disappointing THE INTERNET"-clause? Social life intervening >.<
