THE INCUBATOR / Rile the Asura
« on: Jul 05, 2016, 11:06 PM »
Ok, I'm biting the bullet on this one!

Some people in the discord chat have encouraged me to try making a '3D comic' character, where I create a 3D character and prepare a model of my opponent before we start our fight, and then use the time during the actual battle to do posing, paneling, post editing, dialogue/word bubbles, and perhaps even animation (my favorite!)

To that end, please have a gander at this fellow. This is just the sculpt, it will become a low poly model and will be textured/rigged/animated.

Here is the original concept art:

Please let me know what you think! I know 3D isn't exactly the standard around here, so I'm interested in what people have to say about this.

Masu is an Asura. A very, very angry Asura. Asura are demi gods who feel emotions much more powerfully than humans, particularly anger, and are fueled entirely by their rage-- normal damage does not effect them and only makes them angrier and thus, more powerful. Masu is capable of transformation, particularly to take on his three-faced form, as well as growing many, many more arms, depending on how angry he is. The extents and power of an Asura has yet to be documented. Capture is impossible, seek termination at all costs.

Risk Rating: SSS+

WOO Ok Let's do this. Here's some sketches and a design sheet for you guys. Gonna get this finished ASAP and send it in, so feedback is appreciated!

Wutata is busy with his own stuff so I'm just working alone now. Might as well throw this in the ring and see how it goes!

Updated bio:

Crazyhand used to be a scientist. While working with alternate dimensions, his hand got sucked into a portal and when he pulled it out, it was possessed by something not quite right. As a result, he has no control over it, although he can decide whether to 'work' with it or not, constantly feeling another presence battling for control in his mind. He's not aware of it yet, but the dimensional residue is spreading like a virus over his arm, taking more and more control with it. His hand, in the initial confusion, killed a LOT of people, making it hard for him to find work; in fact, he's on the run from the police, and after visiting a certain person 4 years ago, has come to Void to see if there's more that can be done about it.

That's the gist of him. Cheers!

I'm not under the impression that this is in any way alluring to prospective artists, but I do need help with the project in the art department as currently it's all being done by me. I could attempt to provide some sort of compensation but it's difficult/not really feasible for me right now. The only reason this would be exciting for anyone would be the guaranteed slot on the team when it goes into full production...

I do hope someone out there is willing to lend a hand and would obviously get full credit (and whatever slice of income that actually comes our way). This isn't going to be like "Ok gimmie art, ok now I don't need you". I'll need to make changes to everything along the way so I need people who're willing to get into the team.

I think I've cleared up some of the confusion but if there's any other notes/questions/comments, I'd be happy to try to sort them out. Thanks.

Hey guys!

This isn't strictly comic related, and it -may- turn into paid work later on, so if it needs to be deleted/moved respectively feel free to do so.

So I'm doing a cartoon pitch to Cartoon Hangover, and wanted to look for someone to help me out with the project on the art side. I already have a majority, if not all of the characters voiced and designed for the pitch, but I need someone who can do quick and dirty storyboarding AND/OR backgrounds for animation.

Qualifications for this:

-MUST have knowledge of how animated camera moves are done. I can and will provide sketches for the backgrounds of how I generally want them to look but things like camera turns will look really wonky if you don't know how they're done. For storyboarding, you can just draw on top of the basic backgrounds and use squares and arrows to represent camera moves, so it's not as necessary.

-Must have a good critical eye for your own work as well as mine. This is a team project (Even if it is my brainchild) and I would love feedback. Likewise, you will also receive constructive feedback, so a thick skin and the ability to take things with a grain of salt are a major bonus.

For storyboards: Please be a quick drawer. I need the storyboards quickly and timely, and changes are likely to be made on a whim. Since this isn't a paying gig right off the bat, I understand things like life, but I'm going to be gearing up for production in the coming weeks and need these storyboards presented on a daily basis. Also, don't worry about being particularly good! If you've got good motion design and are good enough to portray which character is which, you've got a chance at the role (Though for Voiders I'm expecting at least a good basis from you lot! :) )

For Background artists: You can take your time. Backgrounds can be changed mid production as needs change, but the whole point of the storyboard artist is that the planning is good enough that we don't need to go through the trouble of that. So make it a piece worth looking at!

Lastly, some info on the project in general to help the setting for you guys: It's a fantasy themed post apocalyptic world. For Backgrounds, I'd love a concept art painterly style done for them; varying tones, good form and understanding of lighting and mood are huge bonues. They don't need to be particularly detailed; on the contrary, I need them to be quite simple so they don't detract from the animation, which is going to be quite hyper and exciting (aside from a few calm shots).

I'm giving this to Voiders first since you guys have helped me grow as an artist a lot in the past few years. However, in a week or two I'm widening my search to other sites. I know this may not be quite up your guys' alley, but I wanted to give back a bit from the community.

I think that's everything. Feel free to email me at xanderwx@gmail.com with portfolios or questions, or you can simply post here.

Cheers guys!

Edit: Oh, forgot one thing! This is an opportunity to break into the animation industry in general, as the project will be carried out as a series regardless of if the pitch to cartoon Hangover is not accepted. If you think you're up to that, feel free to send stuff my way!

Demon Pirate Princess

She hails from the Void Sea. Fights bareknuckles. Is a lot stronger than regular people, but doesn't know how to swim. Is looking for a suitor. She is very crass and evil, and relishes in the pain of the innocent. She also is a hedonistic bitch. Is very self conscious about her weight, to the point of flying into a blind rage at a mere quip at her size. Possesses a huge booty, which is locked away until she finds her true love.

Ok figured I'd post this up and get crits on his bio and stuff while I do the pages.

This guy is for the min scar tourney, and also I was thinking he'd be for SCAR MATCHES ONLY. This is a motivator to keep me working and updating stuff regularly.

On to his bio:

The concept is a basis on the duality of reality and imagination. Tapping into his imagination allows him to manifest it in any way possible, but is like a blight and taints his body the more he uses it. It recedes over time of not using it. If he were to ever become fully blighted he’d become ‘one’ with the fake version of himself.

The fake version of himself killed his lover one night, leaving the real version distraught and furious. Since then, the fake version has swept the countryside with horrific crimes and travesties, causing the real version to flee from police, bounty hunters, and avengers.

If he wishes to clear his name and get revenge, he must find and destroy the fake version before he gets killed himself.

He’s a total asshole, though, hardened by years of traveling and fighting. In a straight normal fistfight, he’ll usually come out on top just from experience; however, anyone with powers or high fighting skills will wipe the floor with him, unless he resorts to his powers. His powers can manifest in any way imaginable, but are restricted by his need to ‘stay human’.

To make matters worse, the fake version is absolutely indistinguishable from him to anyone who is not perceptively inclined. This means unless they have some power that allows them to, they cannot tell the two apart.

Any damage he takes is also done to to clone. The only exception is any damage the real version and the fake version deal to each other-- this includes indirect damage, such as area hazards (If a building falls on one because one threw it at the other, the first won't take damage from it).

Tell me what you guys think so far. Pages will be posted as I complete them.

Ideally we'd want to make a game that could be easily expandable to continually include new fighters. Making a new engine from scratch might be a bit beyond our scope, but perhaps we could utilize a Middleware engine like Construct or GameMaker? Heck, TIGSource (an indie gaming forum I was part of for a while) was working on an Indie Brawl based of Smash Bros- maybe we could grab the engine from that?

We might even want to consider a non-electronic game. How about an EnterVoid card battling game?

That'd be sweet, Yomi did the card battling thing really well.

I think MUGEN can work for your purposes, but just expect it to be wonky at times if you use it.

I'm super busy lately but I'd be happy to try to do some spriting for this as well.

Yo guys, this is awesome. I haven't had time to throw my hat into the ring but I'll do so asap.

As for making a void fighter, that'd be really sweet. I'm working on a fighting game right now and it's a lot of work but it's worth it to see stuff in action.

That said, MUGEN isn't the best option, unless you want a game for the sake of having a game. If you want it to be quality, I suggest finding a coder who is willing to help out (I know a few people who we might be able to recruit, and even beyond that, there are coding forums for hiring people) and making an engine from scratch.

If you guys need any tips on where to begin and what all needs to happen to make a game, I'd be more than happy to help out. Cheers!

Good idea on the arm Tofu. And yeah, I'll be shading both the big drawing and the sprite, but I wanted to get some crits before I moved forward.

I wanted to incorporate some sort of Ouroboros motif but I didn't want to force it. Any ideas on how to get that in there?

LET'S DO THIS

Ok so I did like 5 iterations of this character before coming to this. This started off as a bit of a joke, but then people started seriously telling me to do it, so here we are: Every comic will be sprited from scratch. Everything written after this sentence is due to change without notice (i.e. It's still a WIP). The character himself is a bit of a mess right now, so critique is greatly appreciated:

This dragon boy is the embodiment of "The World" card. He is fundamentally connected to the world around him in strange and often incomprehensible ways. This attachment causes him to seek out supernatural/mythological occurences and attempt to resolve them. The method for resolving these is different for each one; for instance, a supernatural beast might require him to kill or subdue it, while will-o-the-wisp would be absorbed or the like. This is more of a reflex than a conscious effort, however, and serves more as a unique storytelling mechanic than any set in stone rules about it.

Abilities:
"The World" Connection ability
Super durable body (Incredibly difficult to break bones, scaled parts of his body (arms, legs) are practically impenetrable, although scales can be broken off)
About twice the strength of an average adult human
Potential for shapeshifting, but incapable of it at the time being

Personality:
This half dragon, half human hybrid is a mischevious little scamp. He loves to play pranks on unsuspecting people, using his great claws to escape by climbing or skittering away before people can catch him. However, he can be quite brooding and serious when his "World" reflex kicks in, making him rather unpredictable. Normally, he adores attention, whether it be good or bad. He's also an incredible foody, to such an extent that he can be easily tricked with a delicacy as a bait.

Background:
He took to living in the Void clocktowers, where he could look out over the city and find all new things to explore and new people to trick. It also offers a great vantage point for his "World" connection. He is rather lonely, and enjoys his time simply eating, pranking, or hunting down strange things to resolve. His past is a mystery, as he hasn't met anyone to tell his story to!

Quick note before real updates come flooding in: Both characters are on the table as separate entities. They each have separate writers so I'm treating them as completely separate entries to Void. Whether the approval committee treats them separately or not is another concern, but I'm going with whichever gets done first writer wise.

Thanks!

Full name: Allen Marsh
Age: 31
Occupation: CEO of Royal Chip Casino
Favourite movie: Clockwork Orange
Favourite color: All of them
Favourite song: Cracking Skulls by Twin Gauntlets (this is an actual band in VOID, they play death metal)

Ailments / Illnesses: Schaudenfreude Synesthesia - his senses bleed over from the suffering of others.

Allen is brutal, unforgiving and mentally... well, stable. He enjoys synesthesia he gained in an accident of sorts. He has enough money and influence to destroy any man physically, financially or by breaking their hearts (applies only to women, though). As a very powerful man in political circles, he has bribed the police to not arrest him. This allows him do whatever he wants, and he does.

Due to his synesthesia, he enjoys beating the shit out of anyone and anything. He sees beautiful colors and hears amazing music, to which he is addicted to like a drug.

During the same accident he gained the synesthesia, he lost his hands, and is now wearing two giant metal gauntlets that are attached to his arms. The method he uses to wear a normal shirt or jacket is a mystery and is considered black magic by some.

All writing for Allen is done by inestical. Let's do this!
