i really need to own this:

its 720 pages long and is the size of a brick. apparently the story takes place over 6 hours.
http://www.dashshaw.com/bottomless.html

Oof I just read it, it's so good, I've been itching to get it since... months ago but I couldn't find it in Canada until now (I don't know why I didn't buy it in the States/Europe durp). It's like some sort of awkward, but more obscene, character-driven Wes Anderson film, well it definitely has that feel. I recommend it highly, it's pretty engaging and I had a hard time putting it down. Once I finished it I wanted to read it again but read select spots and was like wow some of this shit is personally fucked-up, dang yo! I'll definitely put it aside and read it again when it's not still fresh in my mind.

I don't know where you heard it takes place over six hours, days definitely pass in the book. It's over a weekend or something.

And heck the binding and book itself are most lovely printed!

fucking cool, what kinda paint was it?

Um, I guess they were professional water-based face paints with a sealer I got from a hobby shop?? I tried cheapy grease facepaint, but then I couldn't sweat and got really flustered, or touch my face because they smeared really easy.

Thx Jho.

I picked up Skim at SPX. Beautiful work!

Also: Venice Chronicles by Enrico Cassarosa http://enricocasarosa.com/wordpress.1/. Just got my copy and its gorgeous.

AUGH, GOOD CHOICE ANDRE, I'm slowly reading it too and just, the next time I go on a big trip I am going to make sure I am set up to do something like that (not that I shouldn't have been inclined when I first read through Carnet de Voyage by Craig Thompson http://www.amazon.com/Carnet-Voyage-Travel-Journal-Thompson/dp/1891830600), okay I tried to do something like this in Paris but oof. Venice Chronicles is so beautiful it's actually made me break out my inks and watercolors again.

I also just read We Can Still Be Friends by Mawil

http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_music_info&products_id=44887
Mawil is becoming one of my favourite new european artists. His style is just so loose and carries the right amount of emotion for his books. I have his first English-print, Beach Safari, as well, but I'm liking this new one more since I was actually so into it, COME ON MAWIL YOU'LL GET THE NEXT GIRL. WHAT, NO??? WHAT THE HELL WOMEN. He goes through 4 attempts at love, and you never really feel that it's simply a pity party with a witty and humourous undertone he has to his storytelling (this particular set being him regailing his drinking buddies of his love woes). And god I love his play with panelling!

Nice to see you working with color ahhh.

On the latest, her anatomy still feels a little wonky, the legs and arms and legs feel a bit too disproportionate. Her closest art, especially since the hand and forearm are closer to the viewer(?) appear far longer than her upper arm. Her thigh is nice, but as you get down past her knee, it looks like she lacks calf muscle definition, its just such a straight stick down, and her foot connects at an awkward angle.
I love your stuff, more Pio, but hella consider that anatomy.

And man I cannot wait to see those bots in 3D, shit.

Mon Fiston by Olivier Schrauwen

While only in french from what I can find, Mon Fiston is still worth a look at with an understandable visual narrative if you cannot read the french (it is not that wordy anyhow). With that, the vintage style, reminiscent of Windsor McKay and other such turn-of-the-century comics, alongside a sort of pushed sense of morbid absurdity and surrealism, it's a fucking hoot! I can read a little french but I still ended up laughing my goddamn head off, its just a sort of removed story with the retro style, but good lord if it can convey beating women with brooms in visual manner that made me laugh so hard out loud, I'm won over hahaha.

Though a short read, excellent illustrations with an obvious care and attention in developing and researching the style to work with the story!

Nage Libre by Sébastien Chrisostome

I can't lie, I picked this up because the cover made me laugh. This is the second comic I've come across about salmons. There you have it, its the adventure of three little salmon (I might be wrong haha), and the loose cartoony-brush work style works fantastic! Again, in French, but still can easily be followed with a little understanding of the language and the good sequential work. Cute and funny read (definitely added with how the bloody fish are drawn).

& of course, when in Belgium/Holland:

Lucky Luke! by Morris (and later Goscinny, etc)

I love westerns so this is no surprise.

Lucky Luke, the cowboy known to shoot faster than his shadow.
I hadn't REALLY realized how few were in English, and how many more there were in French, Dutch etc!! Morris and Goscinny are my favourite writers and team for Lucky Luke. I can never get over Morris' art style, especially his characters! I, again, "visually" read the non-English comics I could find, but I highly encourage finding any of the English translations!!
I grew up on European comics like this and they are still a bad ass read. While kid friendly for the most part, still good story-telling, and good marksmanship.

And of course I'm all over that keen motherfucker, Tintin. Herge is a master.

PROTESTING YAY!!! I'm in the front with the guitar. and apparently i have groupies. with makeshift signs that say "GO SHANE"
that damn photographer took the picture while i was flipping the bangs out of my eyes...

ass.

Since I can't read those signs, I have no idea what you're protesting (and don't care), but damn if a protest sign reading "THE arts" doesn't make me laugh.

I also enjoy how the shim holding that sign also looks strikingly like Elio. As we all know, he is dead serious about "THE arts"

I do believe that is a dame.

good comic book stores should carry the usual Tintin giant Euro-sized books, but there are also small hardcover collections of issues you can get ala:

http://www.amazon.ca/Adventures-Tintin-1-Herge/dp/1405228946/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206394741&sr=8-1
I'd suggest Amazon if there's nothing in your area. Everyone needs Tintin.

ACHEWOOD by Chris Onstad
http://www.achewood.com

probably the only webcomic I keep up with. rereading it over and over, with the strange yet dense character development, imaginative story arcs, and intricate dialogue. it's authored by a Stanford graduate which shoes in the smart writing, I never get sick of it haha.. haha it definitely makes up for the pen tool art with hell of good plot. while there are a few good stand alone strips, I highly suggest reading from the beginning or whole story arcs ahhaha.

do you have photoshop? poor scannings can often be fixed up in photoshop if you play with the Levels or Curves (In the menu Image > Adjustments > Levels etc)

I just quickly did a Levels adjustment, see what it can do!:

I also suggest playing with lineweights in your art to give it more of a 3-dimensional feel, a thicker, heavier line suggest that part is closer to the viewer, while a thinner lineweight does the opposite and pushes it back. I think this may help pieces like your cute little cake slice, keep it up!! Its rad seeing continually practicing!

ahh your anatomy is lovely, i definitely suggest you keep rolling with these things and put together a portfolio for concept art for game companies etc, if you're interested in that sort of thing. is that tablet or tablet, i can't really tell but the fuzziness makes me think it might be tablet, either way fantastic grasp of form.

Gritty, creepy, Batman short you can read online by Josh Simmons. You really feel the mood in it, and it actually made me uneasy (though I laughed, especially at that one part, you'll know what I'm talking about when you get to it)

ALSO i think i heard you were still in Chicago when this went down, but like you were leaving this day? the 5th? there coulda been Monday-drawn wangs... dang.

that's a longass paper, amazing shit

yea i bought a roll of bond paper for the occasion, i think it was 3 ft by... 25 yards or something massive like that haha! subsequentially, i'm doing the exact same thing again tonight back in Canada with art school friends and a new roll of paper, i highly recommend such get togethers, possibly accompanied by beer. unless you want to draw good.
