News & Events / Lovechild Death Tournament 2021
« on: Feb 09, 2021, 02:06 PM »

It’s time! The LoveChild Speed death tournament has returned! Grab a partner, and start making kiddos! Don’t get too attached though, only one Love Child will make it through.

Format
Two artists will jointly create one character that is co-owned.
The character will be designed as an AU offspring of characters of the two partnering artists.

The lovechildren in this tournament are generally completely hypothetical Alternate Universe characters, although VOID has no set canon, so they can be in whatever "canon" universe you prefer. The teaming artists do not have to imply their characters are/would ever be in a relationship. Parent characters don't even have to be alive (though they cannot be annihilated), or physically capable of/interested in reproducing in the event of characters who are sterile, lack reproductive organs or have conflicting sexual preferences.

Death match rules apply. You MUST show your opponent dying in your comic. Failure to clearly show this will result in a disqualification.

The work on the comic can be split up in any way you and your opponent see fit. For example, you could collaborate on a script, and then one person could ink and one could color.

To enter:
Both parties will collaborate on their child's design sheet, each confirming participation on Discord.
Using the character creator on the site, one party will submit the child, design sheet, and icon as a new character and the second artist will be added afterwards by staff.

Final day to sign up is: Friday, February 19th, 2021

Roster Size: 16 characters/32 artists (if fewer than 16 characters sign up, the roster will be cut to 8 or 12 characters)

Drawing Time: 2 weeks per round

Start date: Monday, February 22nd, 2021

VOID Characters and Comics / ARMAGEDDON 2020: HELLBOUND
« on: Jul 20, 2020, 11:53 AM »

Armageddon is one of VOID’s oldest and most hyped events! Arma is back in 2020, and we need 6 heroes to step up and defend the city. This year’s threat is Gray & Hunter: https://entervoid.com/comic/7012

Signup ends: July 27th
Drawing starts: August 3rd
Drawing time: 5 Weeks

What is Armageddon?
A “threat” character that is made specifically for this event will go up against 6 existing VOID characters. The 6 characters are known as “defenders”. The defender team must work together to produce a collaborative comic to go against the threat team. It historically produces really high-quality comics from both sides!

How does defending in Armageddon work?
The defenders produce a collaborative comic depicting the defeat of the threat character. The artists can work together in whatever way they’d like. They could have each individual person produce their own pages, or they could have a single person ink or color, etc. As long as all characters are shown, you can divide up the work however you’d like.

How do I get chosen as a defender?
The EnterVOID staff will discuss potential team members and carefully look at the records of each member. The Council will ultimately make the final choices.
We are looking for members that typically produce high-quality work, rarely default, and work well with others. If you are a newer member, you might not get chosen this time! (sorry!)
You cannot submit a brand new character. Please submit your established VOID character as a defender!

What happens if we win/lose?
If the threat loses, they die. The defenders get the glory of winning the biggest VOID event, a special title, and one of the rarest achievements.
If the defenders lose, the threat gets to live as a regular character.

  • The Defenders must show the threat being defeated or killed.
  • All Defenders must be shown in both comics.
  • Characters cannot be borrowed. You must use your own character.
  • No characters that are typically drawn by a team (co-owned characters)
  • No new BattlePass characters. Established characters only.
  • The Defenders will have a page cap of 125 pages. You cannot try to circumvent this rule by stacking pages.

(Ignore the subtitle; it's an inside joke.)

You wake up with the taste of ashes and blood in your mouth. You squint through watery eyes, trying to breathe through the suffocating heat surrounding you. Glancing to one side, you see your allies. Beyond them, the gnarled, ugly face of an imp stares impassively over the group. Turning your head, you see walls of flame on all sides, broken only by the hot black stone that seems to have dripped from the ceiling before hardening into bars and stalactites.

This is it, you think to yourself, this is my life now. I am dead, and this is Hell.

Well, shit.

Hello, VOID! A few months ago, I started a tabletop RPG group (Discord server), partially so I could run a D&D game based loosely off of Void City. I came up with a fun Kingdom of Void that I liked and had a group of good sports who went along with my complete lack of experience for two games until I realized I had no idea what I was doing. Now, I've had some time to get used to the game and get a better idea of what being a good DM looks like, and I think I'm ready to tackle running a game again. I'm scrapping the old campaign story and will be tweaking the kingdom a bit, but here's the basic gist of what I'm planning:
  • The Kingdom of Void is "canonically" the same physical entity as Void City, only hundreds of years in the past.
  • Players will make brand new characters using Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. These characters do not have to be based off of existing VOID characters, but if you want to create an ancestor (or spiritual predecessor) to a VOID character, you are welcome to do so.
  • I'm running something along the lines of a West Marches style of game where the characters will decide which adventures to go on (after this first one, the one where you start in Hell). This will also allow us to switch out who plays for each adventure and makes it easier for people to come and go instead of committing to something more long-term.
  • Void Kingdom is a kingdom the size of a large modern-day city or a small country. I intend most of our adventures to take place in the city, and plan to give it the kind of variety that a normal D&D campaign would have in an entire country or continent. The contents of the city will be fleshed out and added upon based on character backstories and things the players discover during gameplay.

If you're interested in joining, check out the Discord channel, post your interest here, and add your name to my sign-up sheet. We'll probably use Roll20.net to run the games, and plan for each game session either on Discord or in this thread, depending on what you guys prefer. I'll be sharing a Google Calendar with each of you who sign up so we can coordinate schedules and find some good times to run these games. I'll probably do a couple of different time slots depending on how many people are interested and what times people are available. If you want to just look at my availability or whatever availability other players have added to the calendar, you can view it here (even if it's not shared with you yet).

So come on, escape from Hell with me! And then maybe we can go get some sushi or visit Toon Town or something. I'm okay taking it slow.

Art Jams / Banners for VOID 5.99
« on: Jul 21, 2017, 12:48 PM »
With the advent of "VOID 5.99," banner images have been expanded to 250px tall! That means we need some new banners to fit our new look!

This time around, instead of limiting you to only repeating headers or requiring very specific dimensions, there are three options for how you can have your banner displayed:

1. Create a non-repeating banner of any width that will grow to fit horizontally so that the whole banner area is always filled, regardless of screen size. Top and bottom of the banner will be cut off as needed.

2. Create a non-repeating banner of any width that will shrink to fit vertically so that the entire image is always visible. Extra space left over to the right and left will be filled with a solid color of your choice.

3. Create a repeating banner of any size; it will repeat horizontally if the screen is wide enough.

These banners represent our community both to current members and to newcomers, and are therefore held to a high standard of quality. Staff will review your banner submissions and let you know if any changes are required.

In general, your banner should be an example of your best work and have:
  • Pleasing composition for the space
  • High quality line work
  • If in color, finished and not sloppy
  • No overly offensive themes
  • Text in an acceptable font and readable

While banners don't have to fit a specific width, they generally look best when they're at least 1200px wide. If you have any questions about sizing, feel free to DM me on Discord and I'll be happy to help you get your composition looking as good as possible!

Since the most popular option is option 1, and people are often confused by the exact dimensions that work for that option, I've added a template you can work off of. If you fit your banner to the dimensions of this template (1500x250px) and put all of the important parts of your banner inside the gray box, it should look good on both wider and narrower screens.

Final decision for which banners will be added is down to the Council's discretion.

Art Jams / 2017 Banner Submission Thread
« on: Jan 17, 2017, 03:17 PM »
It's been a while since Toast implemented the new theme on the site, and neither he nor I ever quite got around to posting the actual dimensions of the header images so y'all can submit new banners!

The tricky thing about our new banner dimensions is that it's (obviously) very skinny, and on top of that it's set up to loop endlessly if you stretch out your banner horizontally. I've been advising people to create a banner that's at least 2300px wide, but that's actually somewhat misleading, so here's the real deal:

All banners should be 150px tall. After that, you have two options for your banner width:

  • Non-repeating banner: a 4k monitor would be 3840px wide. A 27" iMac is 2560px wide. An HD monitor (1080p) would be 1920px wide. I would recommend making your image at least 1920px wide. If you want to be an overachiever, keep those larger widths in mind and just use your best judgment. Just remember that the banner WILL still repeat, but only if someone has a very wide monitor.
  • Repeating banner: these can be literally any width! The goal with these is to make a pattern that seamlessly repeats and will look good at any screen width. Most of our current banners are this kind of banner. As long as it is 150px tall and repeats seamlessly, you're golden. If you have questions about how to accomplish this, feel free to ask me (or just hit up other artists; I'm sure I'm not the only one who knows how to make a repeatable pattern).

I hope that clears up any confusion regarding banners. When you've got one you'd like posted up, please share them here or send them to staff[member=776]enterVOID[/member].com. And if they don't show up, feel free to bug me :)

NOTE: All banner submissions are subject to staff approval. We reserve the right to turn a banner down if it violates community guidelines or is otherwise deemed inappropriate or unfitting for the site.

Help / VOID Discord Chat Rules and Guidelines
« on: Nov 07, 2016, 11:17 AM »
Hey all, if you didn't already know, we have a thriving community chat using Discord, which you can easily join here: https://discord.gg/0Z5KXe8U3zyF19yW

If you are already in the chat or are interested in joining, I want to lay down some ground rules and guidelines to help clarify what the chat server and its specific channels are for.

General Guidelines
  • The chat is intended as a secondary social platform after the forums. It's for random discussion that doesn't need to be referenced ever again, or for discussions that require real-time back-and-forth. If you have something important to share or want to have a discussion that people can refer to later, please use the forums! The same goes for sharing important artistic or other inspiration and for posting artwork where you don't need immediate feedback and want to be able to refer back to the feedback you receive. We still want the forums to be the primary place for social interaction wherever possible and sensible.
  • Just like in the forums, we will not stand for any harassment, harmful language, bullying, or other actions that would hurt our members. Be polite and considerate! If you see another member behaving in a hurtful way, please alert us using staff @ entervoid.com. You can also use the "block" feature in Discord by tapping or right-clicking on a user's name and selecting the "Block" option.
  • As per Discord's Terms of Service, you are not allowed to "post, upload, transmit or otherwise disseminate information that is obscene, indecent, vulgar, pornographic, sexual or otherwise objectionable." For VOID, this most importantly means no NSFW artwork will be allowed in the chat (this includes any kind of nudity). If you would like to share NSFW art, please post it here in the forums (and don't forget to add "NSFW" to your forum topic!). If you MUST share NSFW or other "objectionable" art in the chat, you may link to an external site with a warning, but don't post the image itself in the chat. If you have any doubts whether your art is NSFW or not, just post a link to it. Better safe than sorry!
  • For everything but the #general channel, do your best to stay on topic. If you find yourself off on a tangent that might divert attention away from the main purpose of the channel, feel free to move your discussion to #general or continue any one-on-one discussions via direct messaging.

Violation of these rules may result in either temporary or permanent bans, so be on your best behavior! We'll warn you before taking action, but if you ignore our warnings you will be subject to disciplinary action as appropriate.

Thanks for helping us maintain a positive, focused art community by following the rules and guidelines for both the site and its chat server! We have an amazing artist family here, and we hope to continue to grow and invite new members to a place where they can feel at home, so keep up the good work and GO MAKE ART! <3

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or email staff @ enterVOID.com

spit spat, time to chat / VOID D&D/Tabletop Group!
« on: Jul 26, 2016, 03:29 PM »
Hey guys, I brought this up in the Discord chat, but Discord doesn't really exist and I want this to be a real thing on VOID, so here we go!

I'm currently just looking for people who would be interested in joining a D&D (or similar type of tabletop gaming) group! I'm thinking of using https://roll20.net/ to somewhat simulate the experience of actually being around a table together, but I'm open to other suggestions of course.

Even though I'd love to be DM for this, I haven't played (let alone DM'ed) in over a decade, so I'm looking for anyone who has experience and would like to DM. If we have enough people, we'll probably split into 2 or 3 groups, so there will be plenty of opportunities to help out!

I'm also all ears as far as the type of campaign(s) we want to run. Kent brought up the idea of placing the campaign in Void Kingdom and using the ancestors of our existing VOID characters as our D&D characters, which might be fun. We an also explore non-medieval settings or other non-D&D systems, if that would be more fun.

We have a logo! Big thanks to [member=15998]Jacob Halton[/member] for designing this logo and providing his design expertise and experience both for the logo and for overall design and layout of the zine! Now we just need some cover art to go with this awesome logo!

You can choose to do a full front-and-back (about 10"x7") or a front-only (5"x7") cover. If you choose to do front-and-back art, just remember that the front cover will be the right side of your art, so make sure to leave space for the logo on that side. Either way, be sure to provide at least 1/4" bleed. I don't have any plans to put text on the back if we use a front-and-back design, so just go crazy!

In order to give the logo plenty of readability and prominence for passersby, Jacob has provided an excellent guide showing what areas are "safe" and what section of the cover should be left uncluttered so the logo can shine through. Check them out here and here.

There's no limit to who can submit a cover or logo or how many you can submit. Just post a small (800px wide) version of your entries here and email the full 600dpi image to bobo(at)enterVOID(dot)com

And be sure to check out the main Pulpito thread: http://entervoid.com/index.php?topic=13010.0
Entries will be accepted until August 14th for both Pulpito and the cover contest! Don't delay!

Art Jams / VOID Mascot Jam
« on: Feb 10, 2016, 01:02 PM »
Forever ago, VOID had an unofficial mascot named Toolio who was beloved by all. At some point, however, Toolio mysteriously disappeared and was all but forgotten. Nevertheless, he remains the closest to an official mascot for VOID, and holds a place in the hearts of at least probably a lot of VOID vets.

If you could design a mascot for VOID, what would it be? And what would make it a good mascot?

This isn't anything official, just my own curiosity, but who knows? Maybe we need a new mascot!

Art Jams / Alan Rickman Tribute Jam
« on: Jan 14, 2016, 11:26 AM »
You guys, I literally cried out in anguish, "NOOO!!!!!" when I heard that Alan Rickman had passed away. I've been so excited to see what else he would do, and now I've been robbed of a beloved actor and probably a wonderful person. But he shall live on in our hearts... and our arts!

What makes Alan Rickman special to you? Let's share our good memories and love through an art jam!

News & Events / PULPITO, EnterVOID's first ever mini-zine!!!
« on: Nov 11, 2015, 10:40 AM »
Hey everybody! Some of you may have seen my recent post on social media regarding the Pulpo anthologies that came in the mail the other day:

My plan is to get a table at an upcoming con at the end of March and using it to promote VOID (in addition to my own work, of course). I'm trying to get my hands on anything VOID-related that I can use to promote the site and get the word out about the amazing artists we've got here!

BUT!

None of my own work is in those anthologies. :(

SO!

I'd like to put together a short zine to showcase the latest and greatest in VOID artists' comics so I can throw my crappy work in and pretend I'm one of them! And, in honor of the original VOID anthology, I've decided to name this little zine
Pulpito! The Bite-sized EnterVOID Comic Zine (subtitle pending)

I need roughly 15 artists to submit 3-5 page comics (the max number of pages I can do is 68 total, so I'm keeping individual comic counts short). There may also be room for a splash page or pinup here and there, but I want to prioritize comics as that's what VOID is really all about.

So give me the specs already!
Page size: 5x7in (12.7x17.78cm; sorry metric system users)
Comic length: ~3-5 pages
Full color (monochrome, duotone, etc. is acceptable, but no pure black and white please unless you can bribe me for it)
NO VOID CHARACTERS (I want all original stuff that can stand on its own)
Original work only (no fan comics or plagiarizing)
Original characters only (don't borrow other people's characters unless you have express permission from them and they send ME their approval as well)
Page resolution: at LEAST 300dpi, 600dpi preferred (meaning your page should be at LEAST 1500 pixels wide and 2100 pixels tall)
Theme: CREATION (art, birth, origins, etc.) No theme! Do whatever you want!

Final book specs:
- Up to 68 pages
- Saddle-stitched
- Full color
- Basically just like Sweet Treats if you got it from Justin and Nina (and you should if you haven't!)

DEADLINE: Wednesday, January 20th, 2016 Sunday, July 31st, 2016 Sunday, August 14th, 2016 (last chance, procrastinators!!!)
That means you have about two months to submit a 3-5 page, full-color comic.
Please send your entries in PNG, TIFF, PDF, or PSD format.
To submit an entry, email me at bobo[member=776]enterVOID[/member].com and either attach your files to the email or host them somewhere I can download the full-res artwork for your entries.

I'll be making a list of artists who have stated their interest in submitting to this zine, so please FILL OUT THIS FORM IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN CONTRIBUTING TO THE PULPITO ZINE so I can keep track of who to harass contact when the time comes to send the book off to be printed.

And just to be extra helpful, I've created some simple PSD and PNG templates for creating your pages for this zine!

News & Events / Site Back to Normal!!!
« on: Oct 30, 2015, 09:33 AM »
After weeks of going back and forth with our host and working every angle we could think of to get the site running faster, we've finally got EnterVOID.com back to its normal, speedy self!

So go forth and spread the word!
Let the people know that the comics from Monster Mash Round 1 are still available to read and can be loaded at normal speeds now!
Let the people know that the forums are once again a reasonable place to share your opinions, ideas, and art with the community.
Let the people know that if they find any bugs, they can report them for Bobo or Kevin to fix maybe!
Let the people know that art jams are a great place to get ideas and share your art!
Let the people know that we need some more banner art that they can submit at sizes of 150px tall and as wide as possible!

Let the people know that EnterVOID.com is back, and it remains the #1 community for comic creators and enthusiasts to build their skills and connect with new friends.

« on: Oct 26, 2013, 02:36 PM »
Good news: the site is updated and should now be more secure!

Bad news: apparently, I broke some of the site layout and stuff in the process of updating things. Please let me know of any bugs that pop up. I'm already aware that the forums aren't looking quite right, so I'll have to figure out why that's happening.

Thanks for your patience!

« on: Sep 27, 2013, 02:08 PM »
Hey guys, I've been looking for something like this for a while, and here it is!
http://www.myscriptfont.com/

You just print out a template, write on it, scan it in and upload it to their site, and they make a font for you. I just made one with my handwriting, and I can see so many possibilities with this for comic lettering. I just couldn't NOT share it! I hope you like it! :)

spit spat, time to chat / Bobo's gonna be in San Diego!!!
« on: Aug 18, 2013, 03:23 PM »
I just thought I'd throw this out there in case any SoCal voiders want to meet up or whatever. My in-laws are taking my wife and me on vacation to San Diego this week (leaving tomorrow, coming back Saturday). I don't really know what the schedule is like, but I think I'll have some free time, and I would absolutely love to meet any of you guys if you're in the area.

So if you're interested in meeting up, just shoot me an email or PM and maybe we can work something out! <3

Dearest friends of the VOID,

Upon my successful graduation in the month of December, year Two-thousand thirteen of the Common Era, my wife and I are planning an excursion to Europe. We want to spend around a month there to get away from the tedium and stagnation of our pitiful lives here in Utah. We're looking into places to rent while we're there, but I thought I'd give you all the first chance to host one of the finest couples on the globe! I want to hang out with you either way, if we can, but spending three or four weeks in your home would be a dream for me! And Andria would probably love you, too!

So, if you live anywhere in Europe (we want to see everything we can), have a spare bedroom or a couch we could crash on, and can tolerate extremely pleasant company, please let me know so we can discuss the possibility of enhancing your lives with our presence!*

*No enhancements guaranteed. In fact, our lives will be the ones blessed by such an arrangement!

spit spat, time to chat / A Personal Plea
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:46 PM »
Hey everyone!

So, my wife has struggled with frequent migraines and depression for years. We've worked ever since we got married to find solutions to these problems, and sometimes it seems like it's working. Her migraines went from an almost daily occurrence to weekly or so, and her depression has turned from a permanent cloud into occasional bursts. Lately, however, her migraines have been more frequent, and we really have no idea why or even what causes them.

I know a lot of you aren't religious, and maybe you don't believe in prayer, but if there's any good vibes you could send our way, I would really appreciate it. Her name is Andria, and she's so sweet and smart and wonderful, my heart breaks every time I come home from work to find her stuck in bed in a dark room or laying on the couch because her head hurts again. You guys mean a lot to me, and I know I'd feel a little bit more hope if you prayed for her, or thought of her, or sent positive vibes or whatever. Also, if you happen to know the cure for migraines, that would be great, but you'd probably already win the Nobel Prize for it or something because it has puzzled scientists for years, apparently.

I love you all (and that's not just a figure of speech), and I hope you know that I'm sending my prayers your way when you have problems and everything.

PLAYLISTS PLAYLISTS PLAYLISTS PLAYLISTS PLAYLISTS PLAYLISTS PLAYLISTSThe time has come, brothers and sisters, for the almighty playlist to make its appearance on VOID!

If you've used YouTube playlists, the idea behind VOID playlists is the same. Make a playlist, add a bunch of comics to it, order them as you please, and share them with others (unless you want to keep them private). We have some features planned for the future, including:
  • Playlist thumbnail/banner images
  • The ability to favorite/bookmark other people's playlists

So first, go to http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=playlists to check out some of the dummy playlists the mods have been playing around with and check out what kinda stuff you can do. Then, feel free to create a new playlist at http://entervoid.com/index.php?action=manager;sa=myplaylists.

You can then add comics to your playlist by going to the page of the comic you want to add, looking for the box that says "Add comic to playlist..." and selecting the playlist you want to add your comic to. You can even make a new playlist from here, although you'll need to go to the My Playlists page to rename the New Playlist. Once you've selected your playlist, hit the "Add" button, and that's it! Just keep on finding comics you like and add them to your playlists to your heart's content.

So have fun, and let me know of all of the "accidental features" (AKA bugs) you find! We hope this will provide a way for newcomers to find comics that we should really be reading every day, as well as answering questions like "Why is Void City all blown up now?"

News & Events / EnterVOID 5.5, Everyone!
« on: Apr 11, 2013, 09:58 AM »
Red and I have been hard at work bringing VOID into the 21st century design-wise, as well as implementing some features we've really been missing! You'll notice a shorter news feed on the front page, favoring the much-missed recent comics section front and center. Red has also put together a groovy new User Guide for newbies or people who forgot what VOID was all about I guess? Anyways, it's beautiful, and you should check it out.

So I hope you like the new look, and please let me know if you come up against any bugs! :)

EDIT: OH AND PUZZLETHING MADE THE AMAZING BACKGROUND I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT THAT BECAUSE IT'S AMAZING!!!

News & Events / VOID Fighting Game
« on: Jan 01, 2013, 04:02 PM »
Mintley suggested creating a separate topic for this since our talk was filling up the Pocket Fighter Jam, and I think that's a good idea.

Basically, we started talking about creating a VOID Fighting Game, either in the style of Pocket Fighters or maybe a more Super Smash Bros.-esque game. I'm interested in heading up the project, and several people have voiced their willingness to help out. What we need to do is:
  • Decide what engine/tool to use (Game Maker, Fighter Maker, indie custom engine)
  • Hammer out the details of gameplay (SSB or Street Fighter style? AI or fully human? Online or local? etc.)
  • Organize into groups and get working on coding, spriting/animation, etc.

I think this could be a really fun experience for anyone looking to get into the game business, possibly help advertise for Void if we publish it as an app or online game, and maybe even make some money to help pay for the site and future projects.

So, let's get to our first discussion: what engine to use? I'm currently leaning towards Game Maker, since it will give us a lot of flexibility without making us code everything. Zest mentioned an indie SSBB engine that was being developed, so that might be an even better option. Opinions? Resources? Let's get this ball rolling!

EDIT: I'm going to add a list of who has volunteered to help with what, so we can get an idea of what we need.

Interface/Design:
  • The BenT One
  • Atomicfish

Concept sketches, etc.
  • Mintley

Animation:
  • Animeshen

Art Jams / Gravity Falls Jam
« on: Sep 07, 2012, 09:55 AM »
I know that at least one of you loves Gravity Falls, and so do I. Maybe sometimes it's fun to draw in Gravity Falls style? I dunno. Anyways, I did, and here is a new jam for you to love.

Ancelin looking an awful lot like Wendy:

Bill, looking an awful lot like... Gruncle Stan?

And who's this? Why, it's only Wizcifica Belswest!

So watch Gravity Falls, draw your own characters or the characters of a dear loved one on VOID, and post them for the world to enjoy!

Art Jams / Cute Animal Jam
« on: Aug 01, 2012, 11:03 AM »
I've been meaning to start this one forever. Just draw your own character or someone else's as a cute animal. If they're already an animal, draw them as a different animal maybe?
