Why do so many of the battles up have HUGE gutters & copied panels?

You guys is killin' me.

We all got together and discussed the best ways to aggravate you, Kuro.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Seriously, 10-15 pages? You guys are crazy! Even if you complete them on time, you're gonna be way too tired for the next round!

I'm only doing five and just focusing on keeping them as high quality a possible. I only just finished page 1 last night.

That's really the biggest hurdle of this event.  I'm trying to keep things as simple and quick as possible, but I still want pacing and structure.  Not that you can't do that in 3 pages, but that's beyond my ability at this point.  I could do a 3 page LOLRANDOM quickie, but for me that would not be a quality comic.

Script: DONE
Pages Total: ~15
Pages Thumbed: 9
Pages Bluelined: 6
Pages Inked: ~1

I hit it hard the first day, but it's getting harder and harder to keep myself focused on it.  Already trimmed the script down to lighten the load, but man do I burn out quickly...  I need a slave driver or something to crack a whip, keep me goin!

That intro comic is super-funny- I really wanna see the finished product now.

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's on hold till Round 1 is over.  Super close to being done tho.

Haha, gotta love the last minute rush!  Such an awesome, varied group.  This is gonna be a blast!  Looking forward to seeing the real last minute joiners.

81
Ah ok, good.  I'm not totally losing it.

What program are you using to color?

I think a lot of the flatness is cause of the stiff front/back shots.  But those are gonna feel flat anyway...  I think the biggest hurdle is to force yourself to see the figure as shapes, which you're doing well here:

One example I like for anit-flatness is Kid Notorious: http://kidnotorious.deviantart.com/gallery/#Sketchy-Characters
Really simple, clean linework, but the characters have life and fullness.

There's nothing inherently wrong with any of your work, it's just things that will come in time.  Keep pushing dynamic poses and lets see some cleanup on those lines.

Awesome stuff!  Your marker work is classy!

Coloring could be a little tighter, but looking real nice!  One thing that's confusing me, tho, is does he have two thumbs?  It's freaking me out, man!

Oh man, more pages!  HOLD BACK YOUR EXCITEMENT!

And that's pretty much all I've been working on, aside from silly doodling in my sketchbook at work.  Just getting pumped for the Invitational.  Amirite?

Painful XD

Yeah man, I say just stick to paper.  It looks just as good, and in the end, it's less hassle for you!

Look forward to seeing more!

Good designs, your anatomy is getting there, but the main vibe I'm getting is MESSY.  And kinda flat.  It feels like you're still trying to define some shapes/lines even in the "final" sketch.  Try using a light colored colored pencil for your sketching, and when you are happy with it, THEN take a pencil and trace the final sketch.

Also, maybe try working a little bigger.  From the line texture it looks as tho some of these are fairly small.  Working bigger can make it easier to define more detailed areas like the face and hands.

Just my two cents.  Keep it up!  Let's see some more finished pieces!

I may be revealing my cards too soon, but I had my heart set on building it all around the First Annual Void City Scarf Convention and Expo.

Oh all those silly scarf wearers...

Those headshots are nice!  Love the second expression on Eve's sheet.

Thinking about joining the Invitational?

Very nice work! I think the only thing to watch out for are the heads are a bit on the large side on those intro pages. You also seem to be slipping through styles. On those first few panels he looks fairly realistic, but from the second panel second page onward he suddenly has very large cartoony eyes. It looks like it's mostly an issue of the anatomy changing when you do further out shots.

Yeah, I saw that happening.  Part of the reason why I posted these, see if anyone would notice XP  I think it's a matter of using references for some panels and not for others.  I'm gonna have to go back and loosen those faces up, the expressions only get more wild from here XD

Honestly dude, you're style is really nice.  I would like to hear your thoughts, cause your work is pretty strong.  Very stylized, but seemingly knowledgeable.

I think the main problem I'm having with you pages, specifically, is that nothing is really grounded.  You need some backgrounds, man.  Not sure if you had them in mind, but I think it might help bring things together.  I really enjoy the action and motion in the second pages you posted.

Are you inking in Illustrator?  Honestly, inking on paper might save you some time.  I love the the look Illustrator creates, but damn if it is not the most grueling process ever.  But hey, maybe you have a system down.

Just some things to think on.  Keep up the work, let's see some more!

Hey there.  New guy here.  Trying to get over my forum shyness, so what better way to post some work and meet some of you fine folk?  Indeed.

First, some IP pages for my Invitational character, Sketchy:

Pretty much done, aside from the city shot on the first page.  I decided to do an intro comic just to see what I can do in a week.  Tomorrow is my deadline, so gonna have to cut back just a little bit once the actual rounds start.  And maybe focus a little more... Definitely no color.

A long overdue trade.  I'm stuck on the shading/effects... dunno.  I'll reach a breakthrough soon enough.

Guess that's all I really had to show.  Thanks for takin a look!

@otamie

I imagine you can turn in your pages any time before the deadline, what Angie is saying is that they just won't be posted publicly till after the deadline so that eveyone's work is posted at once.

Also, I just wanted to know about the round schedule.  How much time will there be inbetween drawing periods for voting?  Will it just be a one week on, one week off kinda thing?

dumb question: Is this still a tournament? I see every encouraging people to just submit a design sheet in and they're in, which may be overshadowing their weekly battling brackets that's to take place after the 24th.

I don't know if it was just me, but that week deadline was mean to execute on...let alone for the people who're kinda just new or don't really know the ropes to battling.

Or is the tournament not that big a deal as long as we get fresh heads?

It shall separate the meek from the men.

@HeyZoos:  That's killer!  Those two make the perfect duo:  Little Orange Badass Patrol!

Alright, I've put this off long enough.  Here we go:

Name: Sketchy
Age: 7
Height: 3'4"
Weight: 45lbs

Sketchy is a living doodle.  He is a prankster and a vandalizer, with the main goal of making his creator Dan's life a living hell.  Living in Dan's imagination has become increasingly boring as of late, so Sketchy demands Dan send him to VOID City to participate in the Invitational.  Sketchy is here to win, to build a mountain out of his fallen enemies and sit on his throne as King.

Sketchy is obnoxious, loud mouthed and sarcastic.  He is a walking parody of pop culture and doesn't follow rules very well.  Physically he is small and weak, but therefore agile.  Against a larger foe, he will rely on his speed and wit to confound them.  He will use his big mouth to pump himself up and try to psyche out his opponent, but words won't crack skulls.  That's what his pencil is for.

Sketchy's signature ability is his connection with the Paper World.  He can use any paper source as a "portal" into this realm.  While this trick is used mainly for speedy travel, Sketchy can draw anything into existence inside of the Paper World.  But he can only pull out into the physical world what will fit through his exit.  Pulling his opponent in with him would be tricky, but not impossible.
