THE INCUBATOR / Re: Bellgrey Bianca
« on: Oct 23, 2013, 04:08 AM »

Dear Princess Celestia,
Today I learned that I shouldn't add details that don't actually matter and then obsess over coloring them properly.
I also learned that I shouldn't create designs with so many perfectly straight lines that I need to use vectors to digitally ink them.

Jeeeez. I gotta do this shit faster.

I'm generally liking it. Your lines have a nice energy to them, and your detailing work is great.
However some of the poses seem a little awkward, and one thing in particular really stuck out at me:

now while my hand technique is far from perfect, I'd advise you to avoid drawing the hands from those
stark, straight-ahead angles that take away their 3D-ness, and to remember that the hand has an irregular shape. It's
not a single rectangle.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone~

@Bobo: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

@Funfetus: I wasn't planning on limiting myself to battles against magic-users. I'll be honest, I don't have much in the way of specific plans for future battles. I guess I'm just going to have to improvise!

@Tofubeast: OKAY THEN. WE'LL FIGHT >:U
Also, could you elaborate a little on what you mean by... pushing that in her design? I'm open to changes but I'm not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean... going for a more traditional warrior look?

@The BenT One: Hmmmm... interesting offer. I'll consider it.

@angieness: hmm... I understand what you're getting at, and I'll admit the tail will probably have to go into hammerspace every once in a while, or be bent at awkward angles, but I still don't think it's worth ditching the tail over. Maybe I'm just being stubborn... but I think it's important for her to have a sharkish silhouette as well as sharkish details.

Hello again, Entervoid.
Remember me? I'm the guy who did one finished comic page and then pussied out because I had no idea what to do with the character I'd created.

Well I figured I'd been hiding longer than long enough, so here's Take 2.

Bellgrey Bianca.

Background:
Born into sterile upper middle class affluence in Los Angeles, Bellgrey Bianca grew up in a world stifling security and comfort. Seeking to escape a life of bland luxury, she picked up a guitar and dove headfirst into the Hollywood underground of sex, drugs, and Rock n' Roll, never looking back. While her fellow teenage rebels sought nothing more than indulgence and cheap thrills, Bellgrey approached things with a strange seriousness and intensity. Rock Music was a deeply spiritual experience for her-- a modern Cult of Dionysus. She was convinced that there were arcane secrets hidden behind a facade mere entertainment.
   She began to research magic, but the information she found was meager and disappointing. She soon realized that if she wanted magical knowledge she would have to go to the source, to escape the gilded banality of Los Angeles and make her way to a city where magic was commonplace.
   Bellgrey came to Void City in search of Arcane knowledge, and what the hell, a little fame and fortune on the side wouldn't hurt.

Personality:
A headstrong fighter with a foolhardy love of risk and action. Dominant but not cruel, she acts like an older sister to almost everyone she meets. Vainly optmistic, she's always sure that she'll win. Even as she seeks magical knowledge she can't overcome her natural discomfort with the whole academic concept.

Abilities:
>basic competence with martial arts and swordsmanship. She can defend herself from a street thug but she ain't gonna win any tournaments anytime soon.
>Her music magic is pretty freeform but also pretty basic at this point-- mostly energy blasts and shockwaves. It will become more advanced as time goes on and she develops. The power of her magical abilities are based on her willpower and musical skill.

Finally finished the first page. Special thanks to angieness for her help with the shadows  ;D

And here's the second page with most of the lines cleaned up-- I took Kuro's advice and redid the HA and DON'T by hand-- also made them more dramatic.

okay... partially done coloring, and I'm pretty sure I'm royally fucking up here...
A few excuses notes:
in the second panel, I had been using layer blending effects to match the outline colors with the fill colors. some of those effects were undone when I merged certain layers
I'm also unsure about the using that texture in the third panel

I wish I could say I know what I did wrong but.... I don't. I just know it's wrong.

Thanks for the replies everyone :)
Edited my first post to add the second rough page.

@The_BenT_One
Good to hear. I've actually got four pages planned out, and I'm going to fully color all of 'em. What's here right now is very rough.

@tdkgunghoul:
I see what you mean about line widths. I'll definitely change things up in the final version

@angieness
Yes, I'll be doing the final comics at the same quality as the design sheet.
hehe, what can I say? I've always been very fond of cartoon birds.

@RoflQu
glad you like the angles. straight-on, waist-up views were a hard habit to break :I

@redrevolver
The final comics will be the same quality as the design sheet.
As for the font.... errghh... I didn't like it either, but I chose it because it was the closest thing I had to the font that I actually wanted. Between doing the roughs of the first and second page, I found the font I wanted again :V
I don't actually remember what the font on page 1 is... I think it's called "geometer" or something like that

EDIT: New Character on Page 2

Hey folks. I've been lurking here for quite a while, and finally had the guts to post something.

Sorry for the disjointed presentation. I'll combine these two into a single sheet when I make a decent reverse view of Dmitri.

anyway, here's some rough lines for the first page of the intro comic

*EDIT*
And here's the second page! In the interim I found the font I had originally wanted to use. >_>

Background:

Tempest and Dmitri have no supernatural abilities, just extremely powerful mundane skills.

Miranda “Tempest” Roselli is a mechanical genius from the slums of Void. Her family owns and operates Roselli Robot Repairs. The shop has fallen on hard times, and the only thing keeping them afloat now is the fact that they have Dmitri Lancaster, a programmer who's working for college credit rather than money.

Tempest is incorrigibly self-assured, with an optimistic outlook and the resourcefulness to back it up.  She believes she can solve any problem with a little time and effort. She has an iron work ethic, and despises incompetence and laziness. Though it is ostensibly her father who owns Roselli Robot Repairs, more often than not it's she who's running the show. Tempest is also hotheaded and stubborn, almost never admitting that she's made a mistake. She'll fly into a rage without a second thought if anyone insults her blue-collar background, her Italian heritage, or her Catholicism.

Dmitri is more calm and collected, though there might just be some sort of seething neurosis under that calculating exterior. He can appear listless and indecisive, waiting for someone else (like Tempest) to take the lead in any issue, but his preference for thought over action can also put the brakes on a hackneyed scheme that someone else (like Tempest) has come up with. Dmitri is also the heir to the massive engineering firm Lancaster Industries. He was born at the top, and has nowhere to rise, and as a result he may just be trying to live out a rags-to-riches fantasy vicariously through Tempest.
