Jacob's Ladder-really weird bizarre ass movie, if you're a Silent Hill fan and haven't seen it, you're really missing out as this film was a huge inspiration to the game. http://youtube.com/watch?v=pTJJzVdhw54 the trailerThanks. Guess I'm not sleeping tonight.
Rne is great. A series of shorts all done by Jim Jarmucsh..if oyu aren't familiar with him....make yourself familiar with him...and they all have to do with taxi cabs.... Benigni's performance alone is worth tracking it down.....but you might wanna fast forward past the one in L.A. with Winnona Ryder.....and possibly turn down the volume for the part with Rosie Perez.....plus it has a soundtrack by Tom Waits which should be a definite plus for anyone with ears
Survivorman is way better then man vs. wild. les stroud doesnt have a camera crew or anything to help him, he is fucking hardcore. man vs wild is a lame knock off.

what happened to this? lol
with the exception of city of god & amelie, i can't get behind any of these recent suggestions. (in fairness, i haven't seen dexter or pushing daisies; but i'm not really in a rush either, & mst3k in general... well of course). but come on, the core? v? surf's up? top freakin' model?!
I didn't realise this was the "Try to impress each other with the obscure or hardcore shit you are watching" thread.it's not about trying to impress, but if you're going to take the time to recommend something you're watching, filter out the minutia, you know? some of them suggestions seem half-hearted.
The plot i basic and it's been used like a million times, but it's done well and the movie is just so damn pretty.
It's no Alien or Legend
Zombie mania! > Shaun of the dead, Resident Evil 1-2 (again) land of the dead = this week
next week = Evil dead 1-2, Army of the darkness and Braindead. F*ck yeah, 3/4 horror films a week, I'm so late!
Still planing 12+ before the end of this month (???), if anyone have another good name please share, I wanna watch all ALL!
*the list I'm planing to watch*
Fido, Night of the living dead, dawn of the dead - and the rest of the sries too, 28 weeks later (I know this and 28 says later are not zombie movies, but have the feeling... and also that scene of a desert London city scared/amazed me!), return of the living dead, re-animator, bride of re-animator and street zombies
those for the zombie reference, for the werewolf I'll watch possesed 1-2 (again) american werewolf 1-2 (again), Hellsing (again T_T), Cursed (.....). I don't have a long list for those, if anyone knows more, again, please share, I'm desperate T_T
Shaun of the Dead is better the more times you watch it because you start noticing things you didn't notice before, same with Hot Fuzz.

anyone watch the Beowulf trailer and immediately think "this looks like polar express.."?
I think it's a literary massacre and a crime against the universe. the original story was badass. this flick is just gonna be bad.
Pan Labyrinth was great. But I was covering my eyes when Mercedes cut that guy's mouth. ha..i was totally gonna rant about that before you beat me to the punch.
yeah, I dunno about Beowulf. I mean Neil Gaiman had a hand in it, but, Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mom? What?

I just watched Holy mountain and santa sangre by Alejandro Jodorowsky, i have to say if you like surrealistic shit watch these now, pussies need not apply. watch his other movie el topo too while your at it. they are all up on veoh for free so you have no excuses not to bare witness to this beautiful madness.
i watched half of holy mountain last night...or about 30 minutes...up until the nuex-jesus got a gold nugget made out of his shit sweat and jizz. the toad and chameleon circus was CRAZY.
Sweet I caught a Dark Place marathon on once and was just mesmerized for like hours.

Went to see Hancock today. Great concept, but terribly executed.well i figured that since the both had powers that whenever they were together and felt anger about each otehr their powers created anomalies and such. like when they were arguing everything heated up and when they started to fight the tornadoes showed up. it's just a theory but i think its a good one >_<
And where the heck did those tornadoes come from?
Yesterday, I did plan upon seeing the Dark Knight, but I went to see this movie instead.

Oh and one more thing, anyone seen an anime called Mononoke? I'm in love with it. I'm halfway through it.Who hasn't?? yeah it's neat.
Just to be perfectly clear (I was at work and couldn't post any images):OH! Sorry. What's it about?

I mean this Mononoke, not Princess Mononoke...although that's a great movie. No doubt. Just double checking. I highly recommend it to those who haven't seen it.

I keep hearing about parents being outraged by this movie, there were no kids at the screening I went to, how about anyone else?ahahaha what? It's rated R guys... don't take the kids. XD I didn't see any, but it was a late showing.
Yeah, I missed all the small things they changed. Not talking about how Rorschach decided to fight crime, not saying how her got his 'face', and changing that happened at the kidnappers house. I also was sad that they changed it to being John's watch instead of his girlfriend's.yeah but then again, it kind of cheapened it for me to have everything be so close to the book; cause it's like, well, I could've just read the book again?? But I miss the thing I mentioned because it gives Ozy's plan another twist; where he thinks he's brought peace and everything, then Manhattan is all, "ahaha yeah... you fixed things.... for a while."

I also wish they'd cut out the whole "I'M NOT LOCKED IN HERE WITH YOU, YOU'RE LOCKED IN HERE WITH MEEEE" line, because it was so cheesy that I got secondhand embarrassment.
oh.
you did not just tell me to chill out. :I
Again, still haven't seen it, but I read that a lot of the negative reviews online so far have to do with how closely it followed the source material.
Wristcutters: a Love Story
(http://sodapopculture.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/wristcutters.jpg)
I liked it a lot.
I thought it was as good as a Watchmen movie could possibly be. Any closer to the source material would have wrecked it and made it as heavy and overworked as the book was.
i've been without television for about three months now.

..so.... but what's with the foam head?
THAT, is a giant foam head exaggeration of Jason Statham, as seen in Crank 2: High Voltage. Statham, reprising the role of Chev Chelios, an inexplicably cockney gentleman with gang dealings in Los Angeles. In the first Crank, he was given a drug cocktail that made it so he had to keep his heart rate up to a certain point or else he'd die. That movie saw him falling out of a helicopter & bouncing off a jag.Kuro you make me want see the movie just for the crazy big fight
Crank 2, starts of the very moment preceding, in which he is literally scraped off the pavement & brought to an operating room. Having apparently outlived the crazy once-thought fatal cocktail, his heart is worth a large sum of money on the black market. So it's stolen & replaced with an artificial one. However, the battery pack gets destroyed & he must then, over the course of the film keep shocking himself to stay alive.
Those pictures above are from one point later in the picture where he wanders into a power substation & touches some rather dangerous electric equipment that gives him so much electricity, he becomes a giant, KAIJU-JASON STATHAM & battles another, somehow equally large man as they tower over the power station in an epic duel of fisticuffs.
and yes. i did pay money to see this movie.
but you know what... at least it's better than Wolverine.
mmmm, green women.tasty

It's really unfortunate it was canceled, it was such a good show. I've been rewatching the seasons today.
Is anyone watching 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold'? Because you seriously need too.
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=3B74E3B916BC3552&page=3
Recommend all of them but if you're short on time go with 'Terror on Dinosaur Island' and 'Evil Under the Sea'.
If you can get over the 'Oh my god, this isn't 'Batman: The Animated Series', it's very good. Where BTAS embraced the darker roots of the character, 'Brave and the Bold' embraces the era of Batman where there was fun. It's also a team up series but doesn't usually use the big guns. Green Arrow, Aquaman and the new Blue Beetle are used the most. Off the top of my head other heroes I can recall are Adam Strange, Entrigan, the new Atom and Plastic Man. Also Aquaman is amazing in this series. The villians are heavy second and third tier, going so far as to have Gentleman Ghost be a main villain in two or three episodes.
I very much looking forward to Torchwood, it looks simply amazing.
I know of one instance where the audience actually gave the movie a standing ovation.I almost didn't believe you at first, but then it occurred to me how well Americans tolerate absolute shit in place of entertainment nowadays (no offense).
REPORTING BACK on "Repo! The Genetic Opera":
And another good rock opera, kinda old is Tommy. I liked that. Plus it's got whats-his-face from The Who.
I've wanted to see Brothers Bloom since I found it was by the guy who created Brick - I loved that movie so hard
(http://MiG208.imageshack.us/MiG208/9317/draculae.th.jpg) (http://img208.imageshack.us/i/draculae.jpg/) Currently re watching Dracula Gary Olman is bad ass a Dracula. And the cinematography was excellent.I had to re watch this a while ago too. I think the best part of the movie is Tom Waits as R.M. Renfield eating spiders.
Evil Dead: The Musical sucked. There's a reason it got cancelled halfway through its off-Broadway run.
Repo CONTINUES to suck, but was GREAT seeing it in theaters for the laugh fucking riot that ensued. That movie was just "hey this can't get worse GOLLY IT JUST DID HEE HEE HA HO HO" Everyone in the theater bonded, we laughed, we talked, we had a great time.
Fine fine I wont comment on anything related to music since I don't know anything about music in the first place.

Tommy was fucking CREATED by The Who. God fucking dammit Will.
Rocky Horror is, still, a terrible terrible terrible movie, but it's well worth seeing in theaters if you can find it. Think MST3K. the music's pretty good too.
hahaha yeah, my hating Evil Dead: The Musical and Repo! means I've maligned an entire genre. Good call.

It's been a year of pretty forgettable movies, but I think The Hangover still takes "greatest".
i'm still holding out to see what's supposed to be coming down the pike: moon, inglourious basterds, the road, where the wild things are, fantastic mr. fox, & cameron's avatar. the year's not over yet.

always
They kept the names on the bat after cutting that from the film? In the script there's a bit where he's going around his Jewish Neighborhood getting the bat signed by everyone. Which adds so much more to it. Also, that role in the film was also written with Adam Sandler in mind. Which I think, would have been amazing.
... But what about Til Schweiger?!

let me just say: it may possibly be my favorite movie of all time. and i'm just the half hour into it. it's like the same spoofing style of garth marenghi's dark place (albeit not as rapid fire), only applied to blaxploitation & it's sheer fucking genius. click the poster for the trailer.

"Imagine if the prince had been changed into a frog because a Catholic priest, referred to as a magician, who is wearing a Roman collar but seems to exist in a separate universe from the actual tenets of Catholicism, sprinkled him with cursed water from a baptismal font, and the only way for the prince and Tiana to save themselves was for them to get the pope-wizard to feed them magical communion wafers. "
"At Disneyworld, Mulan, Jasmine, and Pocahontas are all off in Epcot Center, while the "real" (i.e. white) princesses are all in the main Magical Kingdom. Will Tiana be relegated to the Epcot "Ghetto" (which costs another ticket to get into), or will she get to be with the main attractions?"
Have not seen the movie, but the story is set in New Orleans, so some seriously awkward acrobatics would have to be performed in order to avoid any acknowledgement of race, I think. It has always been a part of the country with some very self-evident messed-up race relations.
Jack has a good point about this-- Disney deals with minority characters as protagonists and everybody is up in arms about how racist the portrayals are. This is more indicative of racism still latent in cultural thinking at large, than of anything on Disney's part.

Not really acrobatics, but no one really talks about it, aside from the line I pointed out. I think one of the articles I posted has the writer talking about how he tried to avoid talking about race and religion explicitly, and another says that it's might be indicating people are expected to not make a big deal of it either.Jack has a good point about this-- Disney deals with minority characters as protagonists and everybody is up in arms about how racist the portrayals are. THIS is very on point, there are bigger race issues surrounding the movie's production than there are in the movie itself.
Could be worse. The main princess of Sleeping Beauty is in the movie for...less than twenty minutes I think.
Papyrus was fine. It was at a size large enough to be legible, and it reflected a decent theme of "wildness." Not a great choice, but probably better than going Plain Jane with Helvetica/Verdana/Arial/other san seriff mod font.

Half the cast was black. =)
Wait, but there weren't any humans in that movie- why would there be black folks?
Half the cast was black. =)
Just that it took disney forever to kind of figure out black people existed. And when people started to question why they didn't have black characters, setting the Lion King in Africa was something they did to try & appease people. Which is funny.
And only a quarter of the cast was black. And not even that high on the bill.
My senses are tingling. You must be black?
it's waaaaaaaaaay better than the movie......the movie was essentially a capper for the series

Serenity
A really great sci-fi movie. I haven’t seen Firefly yet, but this made me want to.
You know, even as a little kid I couldn't get into Voltron. I always liked Mazinger (or TranZor Z (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_DpnPpGKTc) as the dub I had called it) way better. Only time I like Voltron is when it comes up as an analogy for the Wu Tang Clan.
Lately on a kick of rewatching Cowboy Bebop episodes. Mostly out of order.
but it's so fun to watch :(I have to admit I'm somewhat surprised and entertained that certain self righteous corners of the internet seem to be up in arms that such a show exists to corrupt minors. A show that obviously isn't for kids. Obviously.

I was pretty impressed with the first episode, it's slice of life shoujo goodness and is very well done.

it's a lot of fun, even if it doesn't have the tightest story. if you like fast-paced action, this is worth a pick up.
Ben Affleck should continue stretching his director muscles.
Saw Unbreakable again with my girlfriend, who has never seen it. I hadn't seen it since it first showed. There was no Old M Nigh Shyamalan - there was only Sixth sense XD
I miss Old M Night Shyamalan. :( *sigh*
Saw Donnie Darko for the first time yesterday, and loved it.What's the name for sequal to Donie Darko?
Saw the sequel tonight, and wondered why the hell I even sat through that piece of shit. I should have just watched the first one again.
Been watching the new season of Dexter and Arrested Development.
Both are crazy good
Agreed. I haven't watched the new season of Dexter byt Arrested Development is the only sitcom that makes me laugh out loud. It's awesome. It's a pity that it was kinda sunk by this ridiculous idea that the humor is somehow sophisticated and subtle. You might wanna check out Better Off Ted. It lasted two years, but was smart and hilarious and had Portia de Rossi

Saw Event Horizon..
DO NOT WATCH

Other than that, I'm just waiting for It's Always Sunny and the League to return. That's all I really watch.
The Final Cut version, I presume?Yeah, Hauer is in Blade Runner too. Director's Cut here. Is there that big of a deal in the difference?
Also, isn't Hauer in both movies?
From what I understand, the Final cut is the final 'final' cut, the one the director is most pleased with/originally wanted and also the last cut ever. The Final Cut version, I presume?Yeah, Hauer is in Blade Runner too. Director's Cut here. Is there that big of a deal in the difference?

thanks for that link! looks like it goes to a ton of different series... maybe I don't cruise youtube often enough. :P
Deadman Wonderland! Think X-Men in prison and all deranged. Young boy is sent to a prison for superhumans after he is accused of slaughtering his whole classroom and discovers a whole conspiracy surrounding these superhumans called Deadmen, who have powers related to and manipulating blood. Meanwhile he searches for who he claims is the true perpetrator behind the massacre: the enigmatic Red Man.

Other than that I'm thinking about watching all of Arrested Development again.
I recently discovered Community. Fantastic!that's probably the best comedy on network tv - huge fan of Joel McHale (Jeff) on The Soup as well!
Oh its a manga too? Has it been released stateside or is it one of those things I'd have to read online lol. If the anime turns out being decent for me (I guess I'll find out tonight when I go to watch it) then I might want to check out the manga too.Yeah, wikipedia tells me that Tokyopop has released a volume or two (but TP is going out of business so I'm not sure whose going to translate it now.) I highly suggest giving it a try the art is lovely and it has some great action sequences.
Other than that I'm thinking about watching all of Arrested Development again.I've been thinking the same exact thing for like the past month, hopefully hulu has a good amount of it up.
Just now watching the Fringe finale on DVR
Finally got into Dr. Who, and wondering how I was living previously without this show.
i don't think there's another korean revenge film that'll ever live up to this.
Monsters was pretty cool indeed, expected nothing tho ,but the point of view was somehow refreshing !
SP i have seen it ,liked so,so...won't spoil anything ,but if your a gamer or anime fan,you probally will like the sequences of action probally

But that doesn't mean that we can't or shouldn't have fun too.
Couple of fun movie reconmendations;
Reign of Assassins

now granted I have had a serious crush on Michelle Kahn/Yeoh since the early 90's when I saw her in Heroic Trio and SuperCop...so I tend to be overly thrilled with any of her performances......but this is a pretty damn good movie.....and for a kungfu movie actually has a semi-decent script
and for stupid 90's HK film fun do check out Heroic Trio if only to see how absolutley spunky sexy cute Maggie Cheung was instead of just how smoky sexy she is now.

I like Aronofsky just fine. But I liked Black Swan better when it was Perfect Blue.I'm sorry Kuro, but that's one of the most hipster-ey things I have ever heard.

and that makes it less true how?It doesn't. But the way you said it is still funny.
but as happy as the previous program made me it dashed aside by the sad sad fact that neither 'Breaking Bad' or 'The Walking Dead' is mentioned in this entire thread even once.Coulda sworn I mentioned Breaking Bad at least once. Love the shit out of that show.
Assault on Precinct 13
Watched Real Steel last night. Loved the robots designs and also the incremental future. (the winds turbines in the corn fields are apparently are a real place, so good scouting on their part.) Hugh plays a good actual jackass and nice character development on his part. Movie is a bit derivative (Rocky w. robots is applicable but it reminds me of Metabots some how and makes me want to look more into that genre of robot show.) So want to draw robots.
It was pretty damn good.
On a side note my mind was blown by this:

REDLINE
Sherlock is an ass.I've a terrible crush on Benedict Cumberbatch. It's ruined my life.
A wonderful ass, and we love him for it :allears:
Gonna go see it tomorrow morning. Gonna see it in 3d. I never do 3D on principle (and because it costs money) but the group of people I'm going with want to so...fine, whatever. As a general rule I avoid 3D, though I hear this movie uses it well (I saw it in 2D).
convenient & silly you say? Do tell.
I enjoyed it, even if some of the info nuggets from Act I were obvious plotpoints for Acts II and III. And pretty it most certainly was.

Kids on the Slope. If you know the two key people working on the series, you have good taste in anime.
Director: Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo)
Music: Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell SAC)
I don't give a shit what the series is about, with those two involved, I'm taking a look.
WRECK IT RALPH YOU GUYS
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH
ITS AMAZING
ALSO PAPERMAN
OH MY GOD
that is all
I think Australia's penance for getting Thor and Avengers before everyone else is that we have to wait until late December for Wreck it Ralph. Booooo.
For those of you going to go see Wreck-It Ralph.
Come in early and watch this short before the actual movie starts. It uses both 2D and 3D animation in this and it just looks GORGEOUS!
classic ,offcourse, rewatch it every several months

The Holy Mountain 1973 directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
Its about a hobo who climbs into a tower and joins a gang comprising of the world's most powerful people in order to steal the secret of immortality from ancient wisemen who live on Mt. Lotus.

I'm thinking of seeing Black Swan again soon for research, that movie freaked me out. I'm looking for scary/freaky/thriller type films that makes you sweat and feel all uncomfortable inside. Any recommendations?
Requiem will put you off of sweaty old dudes and ass-to-ass like nothing else.
a mix of Scream, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, & Charles Burn's Black Hole. With Time travel & UFOs.
Everything about the bad guys and their cult was so well done. The War Boys tear-assing around, lancing shit and jumping from car to car was such fascinating physicality.
the rarity of shininess in the dusty wastes is what makes it so sacred to them; only to then just have it all as background dressing to a killer fucking action movie. That's the way you're supposed to worldbuild.
