The colours and lines on both of these blow my mind.  Though I'm not sure what happened at the end of Vandermeer's...

Tinman: My submission was intentionally short because every minute I spent on the computer was one I stole from my opponent, and that's just unsportsmanlike! I'm looking forward to working on longer pieces in the future. Thank-you so much for the wonderful compliments, you're a real peach.

Joe: I HAVE BEEN WAITING THIS WHOLE TIME for someone to mention my awful backgrounds. Not only are they oversimplified, they're also very sloppy. There's nothing really right about 'em except for the colour. I am so terribly ashaaaaaamed.
As for the frog being Flan's wife and his motivations for consuming her, I imagine this problem could have been solved with a few extra pages. I suspect the logical progression of this scene does, in fact, resolve with Flan attempting to eat Orion. It's funny to think that the visual clue of lipstick, a wig, or eyelashes on the frog would have told you right away that she was his wife... But it felt overwrought, somehow.

Angieness: if YOU like the colour palette, that's high praise! I worried about brightening her colour because I (unwisely) perched her on a high-saturated yellow part of Flan's body... Not a wise design choice. A pink would have done it, you're absolutely right. Something to look out for in the future. Thank-you!

slothvert-fun style! I like the color palette you used quite a bit. I think you would have benefited a lot from some digital lettering because it's sort of jarring seeing this messy hand lettering versus a mostly tightly done piece of work.

J.Vandermeer-you also had a very nice color palette, everything visually went together nicely. I think you could have brought attention to the frog wife on the second page a bit more by maybe making her a brighter color. I had missed her there originally and was confused about where the frog came from in the last page.

slothvert:
I was very impressed by how 'finished' this looked when I first saw it. Insanely good colouring and all the expressions look so perfect. I would add some more texture and depth to everything though, whether that be through your colouring or your markmaking. Experiment I guess?

J:
Gotta be honest, I was and still am sorta confused about the story. I just don't understand why flan eats the little frog. At first I was like naww, its probably his baby from the 'wife' and it looks nothing like its Papa, then I thought about it and thought naagh its probably his wife, but then I was like whys he eating her, cuz some dude called her a hussy? Why doesn't he eat the dude. Basically I was just a bit confused. Other than that it all flows perfectly and the arts gorgeous if not a bit oversimplified in the background.
I'd just make the story a bit clearer, it may well have been clear, but there are morons like me in the world who you need to make it extra clear for.

Don't know how this one took me so long to find.  One of my favorite matchups.  I like to imagine that your comics happen in the same canon, one right after the other.  Somebody eats your wife?  Bring the sanctity of his own wife into question, that'll show 'em!

The comic timing in both comics was beautiful.

Slothvert: Dr. Flan is a singular character for whom I have much appreciation for. Frogs are rad and giant, evil frogs are even better. I dig your swank southern night setting and the bumps that croak from the murky underbrush. Very fly cartoony style and smooth dialogue. There are a few breaks in the action that damage your flow- I wanna see Flan smash into that hemi and Orion dashing away. Its a fun romp, can't wait to see more of this monstrosity.

J. Vandermeer: To the point and packing very much punch- all you lack is a Baby-Daddy Dance. But dammit those are some adorbs frogs. Your colorful lines are quite charming and the swampy warmth of your palette just oozes character and sweet nectary bile. I just wish there were more of it.

Again two solid comics.

Really, I'd like to try and crit both of you, but I see nothing wrong at all. You both pulled out the stops and turned in just absolutely wonderful comics with your own interesting styles.

Please stay and make more amazing comics.

Oh man I loved both of these so much! You both had really great stories, nice clean art and funny dialogue, it was hard for me to differentiate any scores and see a winner. In the end I put Slothvert on top because I was too dense to properly understand Vandermeer's punchline the first time around...

Y'all seem to love those coloured lines, which is hilarious because this is an element of SlothVert's typical style. This is the first time in a long time I've seen him decide NOT to do it, but he was kind enough to teach me some time ago and I thought I'd run with it.
In any case, it's really easy to do, and I haven't even done the technique any justice. Sloth has offered to put a tutorial together, which is something I hope he accomplishes before the next round begins.

The long and the short of it is this: y'all are too kind.

Both of these comics looked wonderful, I must say!

Sloth: nice clean lines and color. Only gripe is the text could have had more time spent on it, it was a tad messy.

Vandermeer: Same props to you, with clean lines and colors. Short, but it was funny :D

Flan, your wife is a hussy.

Slothvert-- nice story, really clear and the drawings are nice. You're a triple hit!

J. Vandermeer-- You're style is awesome, I like the colored lines. Also, the dialogue is funny.

Super solid!

lol I enjoyed both of these, guys! Geez, is living together making you both awesome? I liked the pacing of Sloth's more, but I thought J's was funnier. Overall, these were great!

Woooooah. Also uploaded.

Sloth, I got a sneak-peek at your comic and it is GLORIOUS. Glorious, glorious! I'm so glad I had the opportunity to go toe-to-toe with you.

I've said it before, but I should probably say it again. I don't know why I panic and try to do digital work for VOID submissions. I'm a traditional artist. I don't know diddly about digital.
If it looks like I was trying to sabotage your submission, it's because THAT WAS MY ONLY HOPE, DAG NABBIT.

How can I finish my submission when J. spends all her time doing her submission on MY COMPUTER? This was her plot all along. Worst. Matchup. Ever.
