Rikun with Victor "The Chessman" King

His advanced age and short stature hide a brilliant mind, and his cane gives him the ghostly summons that can do his bidding. Each spirit has a different ability depending on what King needs to execute his plan:

Pawns: multiple foot soldiers for a charging horde.
Rook: giant stone head for direct, brute force
Knight: horse-headed knight for jump strikes and air jousting
Bishop: militant bishop for fast, indirect strikes
Queen: almighty queen for massive area of effect damage

Has a love for complex plans and enjoys trapping his opponents 10 steps ahead.

Note: All chess spirits have a ghostly tail (except Rook, which is a floating head) and are summoned when King strikes the ground with his cane. Maximum summons are 8 pawns, one rook, one knight, one bishop, and the queen, all of whom can move freely. Game ends when King is defeated.

This is Victor "Chessman" King. His advanced age and short stature hide a brilliant mind, and his cane gives him the ghostly summons that can do his bidding. Each spirit has a different ability depending on what King needs to execute his plan:

Pawns: zerg rushing
Rook: Straightforward brute force
Knight: Trickier, more tactical attacks
Bishop: Fast, indirect strikes
Queen: complete annihilation

Obviously has a love for complex plans and enjoys trapping his opponents 10 steps ahead.

Might as well throw my hat into this one.

As usual, I only have Itami as a character you can draw. Makes it easy, right?

Let's make some friends! Greet your new neighbors in however manner you see fit!

Officer Jessie Valley of the VCPD SWAT division.

I took one look at Jessie's weapons and the first thing I thought of was SWAT. I rather like the idea of Jessie Valley as a full fledged cop who uses SWAT equipment to take down her targets.

Alright! Good to see more material from you, and it's great to see what your first draft is looking like. Here are some pointers I can make:

  • Generally speaking you might want to think about your panel arrangements for some of your scenes. The part where we look at the couple talking and then Wren's angry eyes confused me for a bit. Are we supposed to read up and down in that instance or still go from left to right? I also think the panels where the targets see Wren coming could be stronger if you switched the panels between the guy and the girl, so it looks like her image is literally splitting up their conversation
  • I feel that the moment of the attack where she raises her shiv and the close up of the guy's face is getting too cramped. The action isn't reading as well as it can so you may want to design some panels with ample breathing room so we can see exactly what's going on.
  • The shot where she summons her knife doesn't read all that clearing since the knife is too close to the bottom edge of the panel. Maybe tilt her arm outwards a bit more so we can definitely see she's got a sharp, stabby thing.
  • I'm noticing some major negative space going on in the panel where she stabs the guy. All the action is crammed into the right side of the panel and nothing is going on in the left. Is that for the dialogue?
  • The part where she stabs the gal's throat could be amped up with stronger poses. Also keep track of where your characters are relative to their panel placement (i.e. Keep Wren to the left side of the panels and her victim to the right) so everything reads more clearly. Some people call this the 180 rule if you're curious about it.

Overall it's a nice start and I would highly suggest that for your future comics you vary up your camera angles. Everything here so far works but it's a bit on the flat side.

I can't wait to see you come onboard. I'm gonna be gunning for you when I get the chance!

Meet Itaru Saitoh. Fun loving guy, bit of a jerk, and loves downing a nice cold beer. Knows drunken fist naturally.

If there's still time to throw him in, I'm also posting my Deathmatch character Flying Brick.

Hi res: http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/112/d/5/flyingbrick_by_rikun-d7fi7tc.png

He's huge here, but rest assured he's the size of a regular brick.

News & Events / Re: SDT 2010
« on: Jan 27, 2010, 01:44 PM »
Well, I figured that if I DO get into the SDT, this would be my character

Name: The Flying Brick
Gender: A brick
Height: A brick

Bio: He strikes when nobody expects it.  Whether they be sipping coffee, walking down the street, or shopping for milk.  All his targets ever experience is a straight brick to the face.  If that doesn't work, he's very comfortable with simply stabbing you in the back.  Nobody knows how he does it though, because every time he's seen he's simply a brick with an eyepatch that just sits there.  Most assume that somebody from somewhere threw a brick at them, but nobody ever sees who threw it.  Rest assured, when given a job the Flying Brick will see it through with lethal efficiency.

Note: The Flying Brick never talks or moves when seen.  He can be thrown in someone's face or just be standing on a curb, but stuff DOES happen.  Just imagine him as that pile of cash from the Geico commercials who's never seen walking or talking, but is somehow capable of doing stuff.

GO FOR BROKE! / New lineart
« on: Nov 25, 2009, 11:03 AM »
Hey everyone.  I'm working on a second lineart for the class and I wanted to get your opinion on how it looks.  Is this ready for photoshopping yet or is there something I can fix before I throw color onto it?

GO FOR BROKE! / Could use some composition advice
« on: Nov 05, 2009, 10:59 AM »
Hey again.

So I'm also taking a visual development class, and one of our tasks in this class is to create a composition, color theory and all.  I'd like some advice on how the values will work, as well as what kind of accents to use.

This is what the lineart looks like:

And here is what I have so far:

Any advice would help.  Thanks!

GO FOR BROKE! / Rikun's Stash

It seems that now's a good a time as any to come out of hiding.  ;D

Some of you guys may recognize me, some maybe not so much, but I've been in Void for quite a while.  I may not have been the most notable artist here and I've been fairly quiet as of late.  But now that I'm actually taking a grad course in art school, I think now's as good a time as any to show you guys what I got.

So I figured I'd show you guys some of my DA links with some of the portraits I've made during the school year.  Leave comments and critiques please!

Portrait Week 1

Portrait Week 2

Portrait Homework

If you think I should post more and use photobucket let me know.  In any case, I hope that eventually I can earn my stripes in Void again!

Resources & Tutorials / Re: Creating a Tridimensional Character
« on: Oct 02, 2006, 02:53 PM »
Itami "Nomisuke" Saitoh

PHYSIOLOGY
1. Sex/Gender: Female
2. Age: 19
3. Height/Weight: 5'5", about 120-130
4. Color of Hair/Eyes/Skin: red hair dyed pink, yellow eyes, light skin
5. Posture: Attempts to look girlishly cute whenever possible, becomes extremely unbalenced when drunk
6. Appearance: An overall attractive girl, has a slightly curvy, petite figure despite being heavily trained in martial arts, does not have much in terms of clevage but makes up for it with a very sexy pair of legs.
7. Defects: Has an unusually high tolerance to alcohol. In a sense her yellow eyes are an oddity too.
8. Heredity: dark red hair (not many know since she dyes her hair pink), natural talent for martial arts.

SOCIOLOGY

1. Social Class: middle class.  Not extremely rich, but appears to have enough money to buy a number of fashionable outfits.
2. Occupation: Aspires to be a martial arts actress, but for now works as a waitress in Mal's Diner during the week and as a bouncer at P2's during weekend nights.  She's fairly ok about being a waitress but she considers being a bouncer fun (except for wearing the uniform).  At Mal's, she's an average worker but she sometimes daydreams, drinks some of the restaurant's beer, and absolutely refuses to change her dress style despite Mal constantly telling her of its impraticality.  At P2's, she's much more enthusiastic about her job and is surprisingly good at it, but at times she still complains about her uniform.  In both jobs she's known for being a goof and entertaining the clients.
3. Education: Recieved a standard high school education before going to Void to make it as an actress.  Not a particularly studious student, but she does have a lot of common sense.
4. Home Life: Currently living with her siblings Mize and Aize, both parents still very much alive.  She's very close to her sister, but finds her brother to be rather aloof at times.  Being the youngest makes her fairly competative and overtly eager to spar with either of them just to prove she's just as good as them.
5. Race: Japanese
6. Religion and/or Nationality: Not partcularly religious, but does believe in the supernatural.  Is a Japanese American citizen.
7. Place in Community: Not particularly noticable when it comes to all of Void, but she tries to make new friends whenever possible.  She is fiercely loyal to the friends she has and would always come to their aid.
8. Political affiliations: Idealistic if anything.
9. Amusements/Hobbies: Loves martial arts movies and tokusatsu shows as well as reading manga on occasion.  When she's not at work or training, she'd often go out and start browsing various shops.  At night, she likes the nightlife and anything that comes with it.  She can't cook to save her life, unfortunately.
10. Time Period/Era: Void City is a rather chaotic place, so she learns to adapt accordingly.  She also knows that knowing the right people in Void is key to getting her name out.

PSYCHOLOGY

1. Moral Standards: Since she watched so many tokusatsu shows as a kid, she's got the ridiculous sense of moral justice displayed by those heroes.  She is a vehement protector of friendship and cares deeply for others.
2. Personal Premise/Ambition: She wishes to become a martial arts actress, but in the longer run she really wants to make people happy, especially the ones she's close to.
3. Frustrations: The fact that nobody really takes her seriously or respects her.
4. Temperament: overall an easygoing temperment.  She does have her limits, but she often hides her anger by acting like a goof.
5. Attitude toward Life: She believes in having as much fun in life as possible.
6. Complexes: Despite being a fighter, she has the odd obsession with her appearance and insists on wearing dresses, skirts, and any other fashionable outfit despite how impratical the situation (i.e. would wear a summer dress for a training session).  Doesn't like wearing tennis shoes or boots.  She also hates being alone and tries to get along with everyone she meets.
7. Extrovert? Introvert? Ambivert?: Extrovert
8. Abilities: Skilled in drunken fist, can run and fight usually well in heels, has gymnastic agility, and can take damage unusually well.  Can also improvise complex martial arts moves in any situation, but the sucess of said moves are usually up in the air.
9. Qualities: A good judge of character, a massive imagination, speaks fluent Japanese, and has an acute taste for high fashion with high practicality.
10. IQ: Average IQ, though she does put herself in dangerous situation on impulse.
11. Time Period/Era: She despises the VCPD's furry hate and has an odd urge to show that a girl like her can fight just as well as any big, macho fighter.  She also wants to prove that a normal fighter can stand up to the supernatural freaks in Void.
