Reviews / Re: So what comics are you reading?
« on: Jul 21, 2011, 01:40 PM »
I've read two issues of Fear Itself before it lost me. Not that the first issue actually grabbed me or anything. I was being generous. It's a shame, if it weren't for Stuart Immonen I may never of began reading these non-manga book of comics.

I've read the first two issues of Gladstone's School for World Conquerors. I wanted to like it but couldn't. I blame it on getting me to almost like a character and then switching to another. Repeatedly. Resulting in me not really liking anyone in it.

I've read Volume 1 of Umbrella Academy. It was very interesting. I have to read it again. Plan on getting volume 2 soon.

Issue 1 of American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest because Sean Gordon Murphy is pretty sweet, bro. I wasn't expecting to like it due to the subject matter being outside my usual interests but it was surprisingly good. Getting Issue 2 soon.

Super Dinosaur 1 - 3. The first two were like the fun of watching a 90s cartoon again. Either Issue 3 was a bit of a fall or the gimmick is wearing off.

Mighty Thor 1 - 3 by Matt Fraction and Olivier Coipel. Now prior to this book my only interaction with a Fraction book was with one issue of Thor and it was so awful I decided never to pick up the series again. He's doing Fear Itself and as stated before it couldn't keep me interested. Now the jerk got Coipel to ring me back in. The comic writing is nothing spectacular but combined with the art it's just good enough to get me to pick up the next one. Though it still has the evey-single-page-is-actually-a-two-page-spread gimmick that pissed me off in Fraction's Thor.

Reed Gunther #2 started off worrisome but became awesome by the time I finished it. Will be getting the next issue.

The Spirit #1 by Mark Schultz. Another topic outside my norm but very good. Issue 2 will be read shortly.

Skeleton Story #1 - 3 by Alessandro Rak and Andrea Scoppetta. As far as I can tell it's an Italian book by GG Studio translated to English. It's also friggin sweet. About a skeleton detective who lives in the world of the dead and discovers a highly sought after living girl. I guess its somewhat like Monster's Inc.

Bakuman is as good as ever. But you know that already.

Amazing Spider-Man. I hopped into this series at the beginning of Big Time and have read up to issue #657. I wasn't expecting much but I'm liking it. Though it's taking a pretty bad dip with the element of Spidey losing his spider-sense and thus becoming EXACTLY LIKE THIS. I expect this dilemma to be resolved very soon. I mean, I've got a Spider Island to look forward to.

One night out a friend of mine slapped this baby on the table in front of me:

Curious, I flipped through and began reading just a bit to see how it was. When I realized I was on page 36, I forced myself to stop reading and bought it. I have finished this book, my friends. I have no regrets.

The art's not amazing but it is good and the story is great. Rather than ruin it with a shotty summary of my own making, I'll recommend going HERE. It has a summary and a 17 page preview! Neat!

I've also read the first issue of
Reed Gunther!
Your mileage may vary. It's a simple little comedy about a cowboy and his bear companion. I was coming off of a long slog through subpar mainstream comics when I read this issue and it warmed my bones.

Also, everytime I read an issue of X-Men (the one where Jubilee got turned into a vampire) it was utter shit. I wouldn't mind if this "Victor Gischler" who's writing it was hit by a bus. So take that into consideration if you want.

As more of a side discussion, who else is getting beyond sick of all the marketing ploy/bottom fell out of the barrel half assed cross title events both DC and Marvel keep crapping out?

I mean if every day is the end of the world you start wishing it would just end already.....less than stellar so-called blockbuster after so-called blockbuster....and it actually screws with what development there is in some of the titles...

...oh and Bucky is alive and is now Captain America and Captain America is Nick Fury and Robin is Batman and Batman is outsourcing and Green Lantern isn't Green anymore he's black...no he's blue....no he motherfucking  Fuchsia and The Human Torch is Dead and now Spider-man(!??!) is a member of the Fantastic Four....but they aren't The FF anymore and Spidey is an Avenger too...along with Wolverine who is an X-man and part of X-Force.....and...and...and....OH GOD please buy more of our comics...

BLEH!

I know what you mean, man. The way I look at it is, fuck the continuity. Read about it in a forum for curiosity sake but don't ever buy the comics unless they're actually good. Being a huge Coipel fan, I got Siege which thank god was only 4 issues long. I skipped Heroic Age and pretty much every other crossover since. I've read two issues of Fear Itself and decided it wasn't worth the time or money to read anymore.

And as a fan of comics where people don't whine about how hard it is to be them, I tend to stay away from DC. And since I think Geoff Johns couldn't write his way out of a damp paper bag I haven't been able to even give a major crossover of their's a shot in years.

But the way I look at it is, everything is an episode of a long going cartoon. You remember that episode of Thor when Asgard was in Oklahoma and he had to summon all the Asgardians back? That was sweet. Or when Spider-Man helped out the X-Men?...That was a piece of shit but hey, Bachalo draws nice.

I've stop caring what anybody is doing at anytime because "nothing will be the same again" and again and again.

All this shit you have to look at from a money-making point of view. They're going to keep doing this shit as long as it sells. So unless every superhero fan decides they don't give a shit about Flashpoint and that Native American Batman looks really racist, these things are gonna keep coming out.

Fun fact: Some higher-up in Marvel admitted that they sell much more when people are angry at the events that happen in their books rather than happy. Think about it. Makes a lot of what they're doing make sense.

Another fun fact: DC is going to start 50+ books over at issue 1 in September. Got Jim Lee designing the new costumes. So, you know, nothing will ever be the same again.

Also, this thread is great. I've been meaning to get into something without a cape in it for a while and now I've got too many options.

Cherubas you are an awesome madman. Now I know how it feels if Danielle was a mainstream comics character!

Thank you, good sir.

I'm not drawing a comic right now and that infuriates me. Somebody, fight me!
Character: Danielle or Bat, you choose.
Type: Standard
Time: 2 - 4 weeks, you choose that as well.

Just got back from watching Harry Potter 7. It was as disappointing as the first half of the book was so I guess they should be applauded for keeping the feeling intact.

The best part of the movie for me was the Green Hornet trailer that came on before it.

This sounds like a super awesome idea.

NeoIcarus with:

Danielle and Bat .

Oh the stories we will see...

Extremely helpful lists, Rofl. Well done.

Really, Toast is aware that a lot of these are down and is actively working on repairing them. However, some are gone away forever, such as the Finale of The 2007 Speed Resurrection Tournament, which really sucks considering it was one of the best tournament finales we've ever had in my opinion.

We can't get in contact with the authors and ask them if they've got the pages? I'm having a hard time believing they've deleted them.

I was being 100% honest there. I meant no sarcasm or insult. If I've made 1000 comics and held the #1 character spot for 20 years, I'd still post my character's name and bio page when asking for a challenge.

Does anyone want a wee battle? I need to get moving again... Need a stretch after a long break. I'm open for all sorts of things, maybe not scar or death (since I only have one character which I don't want dead yet and it took me long enough to put up a new character sheet after last scar match :P)

I was thinking 2-3-maybeeven4 weeks?

PLEASE????

No matter how popular you get, always put up the name of your character and preferably a link to their bio page.

You can't hate Soulja Boy. He looks just like Goku and he's got that Super Saiyan swagger.

It's a little early but it's safe to say, we'll all forget about Tron 2 when this baby hits the theatre:

I liked Ultimate Spider-man up until issue 100 or so when they changed artists and stuff.

It's funny. I started reading Ultimate Spider-Man after Stuart Immonen began drawing it. I really like his stuff. When I went back to the first issues and saw Mark Bagley's work it's like somebody spat in my eye.

Read Brightest Day: Green Lantern #55 cause there's a story about Lobo and a story about Dex-Starr in it. That and the store clerk assured me that the planets were aligned just right so that for one issue, Geoff Johns could write something good.

Damn liar.

Started collecting One Piece now that they have the 3 volumes in 1 books for about $15 each. It's good but everybody already knows that.

Because Hollywood hates you and the things you like.

Also, I guess I should warn that a head gets eaten. You know, if you're not into that.

The hardcover is out and a bit pricey. If they have it out in paperback, it's news to me.

Mark Millar tends to write what I like to read. With Old Man Logan, the trend continues. Though if you hate Wolverine or Marvel in general, I don't know if it'd do you any good. If you don't care one way or the other, still check it out.

Also it holds my personal record of badassing up a totally lame villian.

Have not seen the movie, but the story is set in New Orleans, so some seriously awkward acrobatics would have to be performed in order to avoid any acknowledgement of race, I think. It has always been a part of the country with some very self-evident messed-up race relations.

Not really acrobatics, but no one really talks about it, aside from the line I pointed out. I think one of the articles I posted has the writer talking about how he tried to avoid talking about race and religion explicitly, and another says that it's might be indicating people are expected to not make a big deal of it either.

Jack has a good point about this-- Disney deals with minority characters as protagonists and everybody is up in arms about how racist the portrayals are. This is more indicative of racism still latent in cultural thinking at large, than of anything on Disney's part.

THIS is very on point, there are bigger race issues surrounding the movie's production than there are in the movie itself.

I have yet to see the movie but after hearing positive things from multiple sources, I hope to soon.

The fact that nobody brings up race is relaxing to me because it'd be obnoxious if they did, regardless of which race we're talking about. I don't go to Disney movies to learn what a race is. I have a pretty good handle on them on my own. To revel in it would just take screen time away from explosions.

And I agree hunting for racism in movies is a little jerky but all that does is raise the bar of how much racism is allowed before people complain. And people do it with Disney films so much because 1) kids grow up on the stuff, and 2) Disney has a history of being racially insensitive.

For example, say you live in a neighborhood where one of the houses is owned by a man named Kidnapper Joe. Kidnapper Joe has had dozens of confrontations due to the fact that he kidnapped children. Now each time this happened, Kidnapper Joe said: "My bad, here's your kid back. Now let's all forget about this cause it won't happen again." And then it does. Now it's been about five years since the last time and your son and daughter tell you they're going out to hang with Kidnapper Joe. Chances are high that if you even allow that to happen, you'll be keeping an eye on things. Nobody would blame you.

Also, the richest most successful person in The Proud Family got there by playing basketball (while the legitimate, hard working businessman is floundering in incompetence and failure). Just saying.
