Thank you for sharing!
Its really nice to see some behind the scenes art :3

I've been asked before to stop comparing people because it makes them feel bad to be compared to others. but this is 'compare your art to other artists' the web page the hangout dot com. If I had read Rikun’s submission without knowing what everyone else had done here and all year, I would have been less forgiving. It MATTERS what all the other artists are doing.

In regards to comparing artists, I think the most elegant way to do this is through how you vote on the comics.
When it comes to call-outs and comparisons in a written crit things can get messy, it's important to step back and ask yourself "is this additional jab necessary? Does this further my point? Will help the person I'm critting improve?"
aka referencing another artist to show a superior example to x skill, makes sense.
But, anything outside of this is likely going to come across as superfluous & maybe even piss people off. (as I'm sure you've noticed)

I'll also add, the whole "I would have been less forgiving" thing makes no sense to me- Rikuns comic is the same regardless of what other artists produce, imo you should always read peoples work in a vacuum and *attempt* to not let outside things influence your opinion on them. Maybe that's just me.

I feel you on hands. I personally love drawing hands, but sometimes they just don't love me XD A good rule of thumb I've found is remembering that the biggest flexing point is chiefly the knuckle and NOT the others. I find articulating all the joints to bend makes for weird unrealistic poses
ooo that's a great tip, thank you!

Damn, I abandoned this thread for 2 months...
I did do some studies over February but I'll admit I've dropped off of it because of comics and other art projects-

I recently made a new character whos an athletic dude aka very out of my comfort zone, so I'm hoping I can continue practising but via comics/ something more fun. I can already feel the repetition of drawing muscles helping. I'm hoping it'll eventually become second nature and look a lot more natural?

I'm pretty happy with how the torso here came out I think I'm slowly working this out.

Lately, I've been feeling more comfy drawing men- I'm AT LEAST having fun with it.

Arms are still a mystery to me- I've literally avoided drawing this type of thing for ageeees so I'm happy I'm starting to change that at least.
I don't think these two drawings turned out that great (in terms of anatomy)- rip

In terms of HANDS- I'm still forcing myself to draw them in comics, but I'm not noticing any improvement, I think I need to *at least* go back to doing hand studies.
If anyone has good videos and tutorials for any of this stuff that'll be awesome. I also would be open to some redlining especially on arms.

Anywho
Maybe I'll update this once every 1-2 months?
We'll see!

CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS!! & anyone who nabbed a nomination.
Honestly the skill & talent on display last year was so inspiring to me, the fact I'm rubbing shoulders with such great creators is mind-blowing.

I just want to thank anyone who voted for Rae & Blue- I'm genuinely so delighted by this win. I put a daft amount of thought and love into these two, so the fact people have been enjoying the ride so far, makes me beyond happy and VERY motivated to make more comics.

Thank you to the void community for being a bright spot in such a shitty year!

Thanks for the support btw ;_;
Sharing this type of thing *really* keeps me on track. A forum post just felt like a good way to do it, while avoiding flooding my socials with quick sketches. u_u; so it's appreciated!

Anyway, today I thought it would be interesting to watch dance/ fighting videos and take screenshots showing the different stages of fluid movement, then trace over them to get a feel of how the body moves.
I personally found this really helpful, its something I'll be doing again.

Fight scene recommendations are very welcome :P

kicking off today with some awful hands :V
I'm going to be doing hand studies pretty frequently (I wouldn't share them all) but I felt like this was a good page to use to highlight where I need to improve/ use as a starter benchmark.

(using an old phone right now so sorry for the photo quality.)

did some practice sketches tonight- using OC's with less conventional body types.
The plan is to do more traditional sketching this year, since its faster- I think repetition could be helpful.

Heyo,

This year I want to work on improving some major downfalls in my art. I'll be posting practice studies as well as comic panels/ illustrations were I'm actively addressing issues or attempting something new.
This thread is more of a record for myself and a way to keep me accountable, but any tips or advice is welcome.

Goals
- Get comfortable drawing hands/ make them more expressive.
- Work on making action scenes and movement less stiff.
- Draw men more confidently.
- More dynamic angels that enhance the emotions in a scene.
- Less cramped panels that show off locations more.

More advanced goals- that would be nice to work on, but I'm not going to pressure myself too much.
- atmospheric/ dynamic lighting.
- Extreme perspective/ forshortening.

Rue 2.0
I made quite a few design characters.

-sharpened/ matured her face. I felt like the cuter rounder one didn't suit her personality.
-Longer hair. It just looks more ethereal and mysterious to me, which suits an immortal magical figure more.
-Lots of bronze and gold jewellery/ a locket. Most of these are antiques. She loves homemade jewellery and
-Tends to wear loose clothing paired with a corset/ belt. Likes to show her legs and cleavage, because she's a show-off.
-Her cage is now more lantern shaped and glows while it is in use.

I think I'm done tweaking the design.
I'll add some close-ups of her face/ her human form to the design sheet.

Yes. HELL YES. I am totally here for this character. :D

This is such a cool concept! I love the idea of psychological manipulation and horror that this character brings. We're so used to alotta physical and brawny voiders, it'll be cool to see this explored and expanded upon. What caliber of craziness lays stored in future opponents heads? I can't wait!

For a demon that's lived through multiple civilizations and eras, I'm wondering about her outfit. Is she the type of demon whose stuck in the past and enjoys wearing dated outfits? Or does she adapt to the times to better fit in? It'd be cool to see her in more modern garb if that's the case. Also considering the prejudices and views in the past, does she disguise herself as human? I don't see a purple horned lady walking around in the bronze age lasting very long.

Ahh great points about the outfit, I'm not seeing this as her final, final design so I'm going to give it more thought, past black and revealing.
I'm leaning towards her having a very unique fashion sense, modern with hints of the past. Hopefully, I can rustle up something that looks interesting.

Also, if she doesnt have the cage can she still collect and dispatch nightmares?

I've had a think about this question. She needs the cage!
The item is magically bound to her, it is like an extension of herself and a focus of her to channel this part of her magic.

Because it is apart of her she is able to hide the cage, perhaps in dimensional pockets, and then summon it to her location when she needs it. (She cannot do this with other objects.)

She's looking good so far.
In terms of being fit for void backstory isn't as important as your leniency with where they will go.
Void has a wild variety of characters the when bringing a character to void it's a good idea to have them have enough options to interact with most as well as being able to learn or change from the interactions you can't predict. Having one hard canon your character needs to follow doesn't work on void because people will do different things with your characters that you can't predict. so make sure when bringing in a character to void that you are willing to change and adapt their story in ways you weren't planning.

Totally understand! I'm pretty flexible with Rue's future, there's no hard canon in my head, I just tried to make a character that I thought could be used to create fun stories here!

I'm not too fussed about what people do with her as long as they stay true to her personality and ethics (which seems to be standard)

Hey! I like this character idea (I’m a sucker for ancient immortals). Backstory stuff: I’m curious what’s brought Rue to Void city? Is she here because it’s a new place she’s never been to or did something draw here here? You said she has been travelling the world for a very long time, does she live in the moment, not planning out the future, or does she have a greater plan for herself? Multiple millennia is a long time to go without considering this, unless she actively chooses not to. What big events in history has she been a part of and in what way?

In regards to her powers: does she both takes people’s nightmares away and create new ones through magic? If so does that mean she could help someone sleep better or torture someone with night terrors? You mentioned age can augment a person mind through artificial dreams, this actually effects there memories or does it plant idea seeds that can grow into new ideas that the victim believes they came up with by themselves? A lot of really fun stuff can be done with this power, I am super stoked to see what you do with it :D

About the design sheet: I thinks it’s pretty good, you got some facial expressions an a closeup of her magic Item. I would love to see what her rituals look like but I guess that can be shown in the intro comic/ battles.

I hope my babbling and list of questions are useful and I’m excited for Rue to join the roster of awesome Void characters. I’m already brainstorming battle ideas lol

Oh man, those are some really good questions! Certainly got me thinking about more deeply about her motivations.
backstory-  I think void city drew her in because at least in my interpretation of it, its this hub of magical/ chaotic activity. If she's going to settle anywhere it might as well be somewhere interesting? I'm going to think a little deeper about her reasons for settling down and maybe hint at them in the intro comic.

As a demon, I imagine she has a bit of a warped view of time and future plans, she lives from experience to experience, so I can't imagine she has any standard aspirations.
In terms of historic events she's been involved in, I imagine she profited a lot from wars and times to great change/ emotional turmoil (I have think of a bunch of scenarios that go into this but I wouldn't go on to much!) But other then that as a nomadic traveller she would have made an effort to avoid drama, after all, her goal on earth was to enjoy herself.

Powers - I could totally see her removing nightmares to help loved ones sleep, that's a really cute idea.
As for how her nightmares work. I imagined they'd influence the person and trigger a trail of thought that's tailored to the situation. So they will believe the change came from inside them, not an outside influence. It's probably how she's remained undetected for so long.
Though I do think this kind of magic could be used to slowly alter someone's memories or world view in a psychological way (I'm sure she has cases that have involved more than 1 bad nights sleep.)

Also, a particularly potent and power ritual could absolutely create a nightmare capable of torture and mind break. Rue would need a very good reason and a lot of money to use her power in these ways. (Due to past mishaps)

Thanks so much for your feedback! :D I'm glad you like my ideas so far

THE INCUBATOR / Flytee Incubator
« on: Mar 01, 2019, 10:19 AM »
Hey!

I've got an idea for a character and I'd love some advice/ opinions on her.

Her backstory/design need some fine-tuning.

ABILITIES
She is a demon from the planes of madness, whose magic is primarily based around nightmares.
Ritual magic- Rue is able to conjure and "design" nightmares through demonic rituals.

She carries a magical item (this will be either a bird cage or lantern style object in her final design) which allows her to capture and contain her creations.
She can unleash them on her chosen sleeping targets, with effective results.

These aren't normal nightmares, they are potent and powerful. They have the ability to trigger epiphanies, break minds and implant thoughts, fears and impulses. (....oh no its like inception)

Rue is also capable of basic demon magic, such as disguising her appearance, opening portals into hellish planes and conjuring up frightening visions. (these visions aren't as powerful as her ritual magic/ they tend to be brief)

BACKSTORY

When a demon comes of age they are able to leave their homes and travel. Rue left and never felt a need to return. She enjoyed Human culture more than her own, finding great pleasure in things most demons would scoff at. (Fine clothes, music, W I N E and the company of humans).

Rue arrived in the human plane during the late bronze age, For thousands and thousands of years, she travelled around Europe in a horse and cart with a small band of human companions/ lovers. She made a lot of gold moving through town to town offering her magical services to the people she met. Turns out nightmares that could sway a humans mind were in high demand.

As the world changed she adapted to the times.
However, her nomadic lifestyle has begun to take its tool. She has chosen to settle down and open up a shop where people can purchase her services. This shop will likely be hidden/ disguised as something else but I'm not sure what yet.

PERSONALITY.

she is wise, warm and loving, a flirt and gossip. She's extremely vain at times.
Due to her work, she is perceptive and tends to analysis the people she meets trying to work out what makes them tick.
Being a very old immortal has made her jaded towards death and disasters. She's seen it all before.
However, she shows no apathy towards her loved ones, taking her friendships seriously and treasuring memories (shes probably a scrapbooker).

---

Anyway, this is what I have so far! I hope you like this, hopefully she's suitable for void?

New here? / Re: INTRODUCE YOURSELF
« on: Feb 06, 2019, 03:14 AM »
Hi Everyone

My names Flytee, I joined the site to take part in the magical girl deathmatch with my bf, but I've gotta say after lurking about I'm already really keen to create a standard character.
I'm primarily a digital artist, but I also do a lot of watercolours so you'll probably see a mix from me. Currently, I'm drawing a lot of D&D and LARP characters (so just a lot of high fantasy stuff), as well as my own auto-bio comic. I'm hoping to use this site to practice my comic layout, backgrounds and step out of my comfort zone a bit....also ya know, just to have some fun and meet other artists. :D
