Charlie     - Contractions

Ahhhhhh, holy crap dude your stuff is so intense. I love like everything you do with angle and movements, esp the way you make random effects, explosions and light that heighten the sense of movement and action so much. The hardest part of doing a 3 page fight comic is making the whole ineteraction complete, and I thought you did a great job with that. Like I always think the easiest way is to just start mid fight, but you managed to make it feel well pace without doing that, which is most def incredible.

A few spots get a little confusing to look at, just because I think you didn't tone your line-art as much as I've seen you. For example I love love the bottom toast destruction panels on page 2, but the multiple zoom in panels really aren't as clear as they should be, just because they blend into eachother so much. Establishing a different baseline value for each panel wouldve helped, and toning your line-art can only help with that.

Bobo    -

I'm actually not sure if the trigger warning thing was supposed to be a joke? Because normally you say why something is a trigger warning, not just say "trigger warning" without any context.

I really liked alot of the small details you inserted throughout the comic, esp the first page. The slowly dripping toast, Ai pulling up her friends skirt. I live for stuff like that. I thought you did a really great job with the tone of the story and art in that first page too. It felt super genuine, like a huge fan of manga making their own.

I think my biggest critique is just that the final panel on the 3rd page totally doesn't work, only because the panel break itself felt totally unnatural and stood out. I like the pure removal of the panel system to represent like an horrible terror completely separate from reality, and I didn't like it when pulled back from it like that. I think either you needed to stay with the panel-less art, or make a move back towards the boxes-on-white of the first page.

Charleso: I kinda feel same as other folk about the similarity of Ai to your previous characters. But I guess in this setup where it's like 4 days of drawing time and is a crazy deathmatches with lots of people taking part... Why would anyone enter an elaborate character? And how do you even convey depth of a character when it's just three pages? I suppose it's hard to do something out of your comfort zone when you have 4 days and I feel a lot of people stayed in it for this round certainly so I ain't gonna judge you on that! I enjoyed your wee comic, art is super solid and I love the Sailor Moon cliche setup that starts it off haha.
tl;dr
nice comic make more ;)

BOBO: WHHHHHOAAAOAOAOAOOAOA A WHAT EVEN IS THAT I love it lol :P I didn't know you could be so brutal hahahaha I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I am gonna be clear, and I appreciate the comments because what else is this thing for, but I have absolutely no intention of scrapping my character or not drawing them how I wanna. VOID's my playground now and I come here to have fun (especially now that I am doing pro work), I just draw what I feel I wanna have fun with. I don't mean this to be defensive or be an ass or be dismissive (although no matter what I guess its gonna be like that no matter what I say).

I am just saying it's a moot point in my head and I am sorry I guess, 'cause I am gonna keep sticking to my guns which ultimately is gonna disappoint everyone haha.

Man I really wanted to like both these comics more than I actually did :(

Charlie: All I ever do is praise your art man and these pages are no exception, your kaiju rendition of Ex Nihilo is right up my alley and the pages are clean and polished as is now the new you for the past year (huge improvement from the past when you had trouble with completion). But I am just not feeling this character. I did at first, with the schoolgirl outfit, but then she basically turned into another Alie Ali Ayla, with the same scantily clad devil girl look, hell even some of the same colors.. After Venom I was stoked to see more variety but Ai isn't that variety yet, and I ended up just caring about the art and ex nihilo's mystique more than her. If you make it to next round it would be great to see her have a break from that form, hell even come up with something new or scrap it, go wild. Also I think she mentions being late to school too much. Don't be afraid to just take out dialogue in certain places, there's some in this comic that really don't need it. No one needs throwaway lines, especially when your art is already beautiful

Bobo: your setup with Page 1 had a tremendous payoff with Page 2, absolutely shocking, in other words, a complete success.. but then it all trips on page 3, which is just more of page 2 and then it suddenly just ends. Your conclusion needed more baking time to become something really wonderful to cap off this sense-assaulting comic.

Keep on trucking you two, I know you'll produce grand things next time!

Charlie, my old boy, you once again went all six cylinders and on the start of the tournament no less. Jolly good show. While your black and white game is strong, I would have liked to see the world and characters pop out more as it feels a little short of the usual pizzazz you usually deliver. The backgrounds and every little detail you managed to cram here brings out the world and makes it wonderfully alive. Also, I am quite inclined to agree with what some of our colleagues have reiterated in their comments, that the characters have the same genetic codes as your other characters. I know you are a great artist and one of the best on the site, so I expect future characters to have their own personality.

Bobo, that was not the comic I was expecting from you. I LOVED IT you unpredictable glorious person you. It starts typical but ends up atypical from the work you already exhibited on the site. Besides the albeit rushed ending, your strong decision of jumping from materials and art style is something to be commended.

Jolly good round chaps. Pip pip!

Thanks Kozi, I am the first to admit I tend to do a lot of similar designs and stuff. Especially on VOID, you're right I tend to go to my comfort zone but its what I have fun doing heh. I do intend to utilize the school setting, but it just wasn't meant to be in the first round haha! I'll see where things go :). Thanks for the crit.

CHARLIE- As always, you come into tournaments swinging. Great action scenes and generally expected whiz bam boom action on your end, Charlie. I didn't really notice it until I viewed this comic, but without any color, your character has a bit of same face syndrome which runs throughout the lady fighters you make. Horns, short hairstyle, scantily clad. I mean, even her name is Ai which is only a couple letters away from Ailie Ali'Ayla. I was really intrigued by Ai as a school girl and was hoping to see some ridiculous adventures set against the mundane school backdrop, but I totally understand going to the comfort zone. Your zone is rather epic after all!

BOBO- That comic was such a mind job I found myself leaning back in my chair going "whaaaaa". I think that's the difference between these two comics in that when going into Charlie's I expected what he delivered. I thought the same when it came to your comic, but you submitted something wholly other and chilling! Nihilo has the potential to be one scary mamma jamma for this tournament if this round 1 comic is any indication. Definitely shaking in me wee boots!

@Charlie: I think the subject matter was supposed to turn you off so no problems there hahah

@ablob: I did mean for this to be a little bit of a dark comedy horror, so I'm glad you enjoyed the humor in it!

Thanks, I am a huuuuuuuge Studio Trigger fan - mostly of Hiroyuki Imaishi but all those guys are stupidly good. I was worried I made the panel borders too thin and can definitely space 'em out a bit more haha. The reference actually was more intended to be the FLCL guitar surf, but I didn't have time to totally make it nearly as dynamic as that so I guess yeah it kinda came across more like Daicon IV hah! Thanks for the kind words :)

Also thanks Taylor, forgot to thank you for your comment earlier too! I can definitely see now how Ex's eyes look like word bubbles haha, I should have coloured them in.

Oh my goooood

Charlie - The Old Gainax/Studio Trigger is strong in this one. So much energy! (also is that a Daicon IV reference in the first panel on the first page?). Also, the snake monster being reflected in the building windows is just a really nice detail. With that said, may I suggest using thicker panel borders? Sometimes your panels blend into each other and it can be kind of confusing (mostly on page 2, when you have these panels on top of another panel). Seriously though, love your art.

Bobo - I know it's supposed to be creepy but I can't stop laughing at the second page because of the reference to anime tentacle porn. Also feeling like the third page isn't really necessary to the story, since the content is already covered by the second page, maybe? But your comic is hilarious.

Thanks Bobo! I really like the completeness of your art. I don't wanna sound like an ass (so please don't take it the wrong way) but the subject matter really turned me off aha... However the art itself is really good. Thanks for the battle man :)

Light Speed Critique: Charlie, I'm REALLY grasping to find anything to crit, but some of the light explosions look like word bubbles without words in them. That's it. Now stop making us all look bad! hehe. Bobo, The style change does a great job for a sudden mood shift, but the colors were a little too muddied together, and it lost a lot of depth and understanding because of it. a little extra contrast might have given it more punch.

I stared down eternity and it stared back, so I finished my comic. I packed a lot into this one. It's probably by far the most energetic, shonen stuff I have put down in a comic.

I hope you all like it :)
