I just hit up the Vancouver International Film Festival and saw "London to Brighton," which was a total gut-punch of a movie.

http://www.l2b-themovie.co.uk/l2b.html

It includes a pedophile getting stabbed in the balls, which is nice.

Got to see Surf's Up tonight. At first, I wasn't really gonna watch it due to all of these penguin movies being released since March of the Penguins came out (in fact, I didn't like Happy Feet that much, and don't get me STARTED on Farce of the Penguins). But then, after returning something from Blockbuster, I might as well rent something else while I was in the store, so I rented this film.

I'd say, this was a real nice improvement from Sony Animation's other animated film that looked promising but wasn't (Open Season anyone?). The characters were great, the story was great, it's a nice 'mockumentary'. And it wasn't loaded with your ordinary 'penguin facts' scenes, unlike Happy Feet (well except for parts of the beginning).

I'd give it an A+

Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, a.k.a. Amelie.

It's a French film about this terribly shy waitress chasing love with a photo album and a box of memorablilia. It's pretty artsy and quirky, and I think it's great.

After returning Surf's Up to Blockbuster, I decided to rent The Core.

Wow! This movie has all of your typical ingredients that make your typical Sci-Fi/Action/Thriller/Adventure film. Random people are randomly chosen by the government to go solve a problem, a character (in this movie, a college teacher going by the name Josh Keyes) finds out the problem along with another character (an Earth specialist named Conrad Zimsky), more people are chosen to go fix the problem (by traveling to the Earth's core), random accident happens during the trip that would lead to the death of one character, another accident happens that would lead to ANOTHER death of a character, the remaining characters made it to their destination, miscalculation occurs, another character dies to save the ship, new plan is made to resolve the miscalculation, one character is left behind and dies during the process of the new plan, another miscalculation occurs and resolved (but only for a cost), one character has an idea to keep them alive (in this case, an idea that would lead the remaining two characters back to the surface of the Earth and escape death), the remaining characters make it back alive, THE END! Oh yeah, did I mention that many big cities (and its famous landmarks) across the globe get destroyed too? Just like in every disaster movie you see nowadays.

Decent story, decent graphics, decent characters, decent (as well as corny) script, WAAAAY too much tragic dying, and overall DECENT MOVIE. Sorry Paramount, but your Kung-Fu is not strong.

C+

And seriously, what is up with DJ Qualls enormously long nose of his?!

REIGN OVER ME
(Adam Sadler and Don Cheadle)
I just watched this movie yesterday and I found it touching...Sadler did something completely out of his 'usual' stuff but I think he did great...yeah.

Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, a.k.a. Amelie. I watched that movie on the IFC channel and I gotta say its weird but had me watching through the whole thing..

I keep posting here, but b/c my old roomie is a Film Studies major, so theres a constant stream of post-worthy movies.
Lot's of great Mexican/South-American filmmakers - Alfonso Cuarón , Fernando Meirelles, Alejandro González Iñárritu, ect.

It's about two kids growing up in a Rio de Janeiro ghetto (nonstop gang wars, mass wanton violence)
One kid grows up to become a photographer, the other becomes a gang leader/drug lord.

"I steal. I kill. I carry a gun. How can I be just a kid? I am a man."

I've been watching America's Next Top Model every Wednesday. Not my usual fare by any means, but my friend Sarah whom I went to school with for like six years is one of the contestants, so I pretty much HAVE to watch. I have to admit, I'm kind of getting into it.

what happened to this? lol
with the exception of city of god & amelie, i can't get behind any of these recent suggestions. (in fairness, i haven't seen dexter or pushing daisies; but i'm not really in a rush either, & mst3k in general... well of course). but come on, the core? v? surf's up? top freakin' model?!

on the other hand: Shogun Freakin' Assassin.

old, quintessential, & freaking classic. two movies for the price of one. and you should love it simply because it's got a baby carriage with at least 20 damn blades concealed within it. dammit.

I didn't realise this was the "Try to impress each other with the obscure or hardcore shit you are watching" thread.

Currently watching Avatar: The Last Airbender from the beginning, it's awkward because hardly any of the Streams i find of it work so i'm having to download it, awesome so far though, i can see why it has such a big following.

Also just saw Superbad, so fucking funny haha.

it's not about trying to impress, but if you're going to take the time to recommend something you're watching, filter out the minutia, you know? some of them suggestions seem half-hearted.

and shogun assassin, while hardcore, sure as shit ain't obscure by any means. oh & upon reading what i wrote earlier, i realized that 'V' might have been for 'v for vendetta' when i was thinking of 'V: the movie' cause come on... robert englund & lizard aliens? no thanks.

One Piece in Japanese has reunited me with my long lost childhood before they went and fucked up their classical ambience with fucking rap songs and shitty dubs. I also find this to be a good sedative to get over GL's recent conclusion.

Watched from 1-55 and then jumpstarted again in the Mock Town arc

DREAMS NEVER DIE

ALso watching:

House on Veoh
Gantz (Manga is better)
Spirited Away by Ogres (Guaranteed Loli violence and psychotic anime thriller / which i find funny since most anime is psychotic already)
Ergo Proxy - got really bored with it by the 3rd episode however. .  .
and Heeerooesss

Crying Fist (boy did I cringe in when I did a Google Image search for that title)

Crying Fist is a boxing movie, starring the awesome Choi Min-Sik (who played Oh De-Su in Oldboy) and Ryu Seung-beom, who I've not seen in anything other than Bloody Tie (which, if memory serves, wasn't really that good). Choi and Ryu each play a down and out person from different of the age spectrums whose lives generally suck. However, through the power of sport, they find purpose and redemption.
I don't like sports movies, but I really enjoyed this one. The acting was great and the combination of the two stories was really well done. In fact, I'm going to say it was better than Rocky: not because I've even seen Rocky, but to send Sheldon into seizures.

Today I went to a gigantic movie theater to see

Not the most amazing movie, but it had the feel of Hardboiled/Transmetropolitan but if both leads were played by Han Solo. The plot i basic and it's been used like a million times, but it's done well and the movie is just so damn pretty. It's no Alien or Legend, but if you're in the LA/NY area, catch it before Thursday. It was totally worth seeing. Director's cut DVD gets released in December.
Be nice Jack.

that's because everyone since has been influenced by it.....it's a seminal movie

It's no Alien or Legend

no it's better than the two of those.....those are both very good movies.....Blade Runner is a great movie....
-draw like you love it.... not like your mom told you to do it-

Oh duuuude Blade Runner- ill defend that film with my own blood and sweat. I know Harrison Ford "broke out" of the Star Wars niche b/c of Raiders of the Lost Ark, but Blade Runner is the role that made him a seriously samwise sam actor imho.

If you liked Blade Runner (or reeeally liked it like I did) get on bittorrent and check out Soylent Green, Brazil, Mad Max (--2 if you wish), Sunshine, 12 Monkeys, Nineteen Eighty-Four(very hard to find), Solyaris (not the Clooney remake>:I), Vana espuma, and I know I mentioned it earlier but Blade Runner ~= Children of Men

the recommendation goes double for 12 Monkeys and CoM.

xD :] :I ಠ_ಠ

Zombie mania! > Shaun of the dead, Resident Evil 1-2 (again) land of the dead = this week
next week = Evil dead 1-2, Army of the darkness and Braindead. F*ck yeah, 3/4 horror films a week, I'm so late!

Still planing 12+ before the end of this month (???), if anyone have another good name please share, I wanna watch all ALL!

*the list I'm planing to watch*
Fido, Night of the living dead, dawn of the dead - and the rest of the sries too, 28 weeks later (I know this and 28 says later are not zombie movies, but have the feeling... and also that scene of a desert London city scared/amazed me!), return of the living dead, re-animator, bride of re-animator and street zombies

those for the zombie reference, for the werewolf I'll watch possesed 1-2 (again) american werewolf 1-2 (again), Hellsing (again T_T), Cursed (.....). I don't have a long list for those, if anyone knows more, again, please share, I'm desperate T_T

Well yeah I went in knowing it was the daddy of that plot, but for an audience just seeing it, it's been done. That was actually the one thing I was worried about going in, is I knew it was such and influential movie, but I'd seen all its children. It's really impressive that such a basic movie with as much influence is still so good.

But say it's better than Aliens or Legend again and I will do bad things to you.

And Viper I know you're on Long Island, you'd better get your ass to the city to go see it.

And Perca, check out Brotherhood of the Wolf and Teen Wolf Too, the sequel to the seminal werewolf movie Teen Wolf.
Be nice Jack.

on the zombie front:
the serpent & the rainbow (though it's more voodoo traditional zombie v. romero zombie, still cool though)
fulci's zombi movies (zombie v. shark!)
also, it's not a movie (though the rights are being optioned or something), read or get your hands on the audio book of world war z

werewolves:
what about the 1941 lon cheney jr wolfman? and far cooler just on principle
also the howling.
and teen wolf. you can't forget about teen wolf!
(jack beat me to the punch)\

(also blade runner > everything else)
