Chunky Rice is the BESTimo. It *is* a bit like a mini-Blankets, but it's really sweet. One of my favorites.

Really??  There's parts of it that I like (all of Solomon's flashbacks are great, and actually much more interesting than the Chunky/Dandel story) but I just felt like the overall narrative comes across as a bit flat.  I mean, it's a good comic, and it succeeds in conveying mood to a certain extent, but it just didn't grab me in the same way that something like Blankets did.

But maybe that's just me.

Well.. I don't think it was meant to "grab", it was just meant to be a really simple story... nothing big and complex like Blankets.

I've been on an Old School kick for awhile.  Tons of older books and Manga.

The Drunna Series:

They are porn comics basically, but that dudes painting and cross hatching is to die for.

Oh god his crosshatching is insane. I found this book in english at a yard sale. The plot actually isn't that bad. The comic still actually unnerves me though.

I couldn't find the name of this in english, but it's a very interesting comic from Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot, "Panier de singe".
It is kind of mean and has some jokes I'm not sure you're even allowed to laugh at. (Yet you do.) But the best thing about it is all the creative stuff like 3D-cube comics. It also sort of combines animation and comic, and is quite much fun to read.

The book is kinda creepy.  The author puts himself into the story as the crazy doctor.

I just finished Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers of Victory.

It's glorious in scale and there's a great 'ah ha' moment every time a piece fits into the whole.  Frankenstein was my favorite mini-series by FAR, but the others were good too.

my friend read it & told me there was some 'coming next time' thing where it was something like 'a soldier will die: will it be frankenstein?!' that's so dumb it's super awesome

It had that 'someone will die' at the end of all the books.

It's weird too, 'cause all of it ties into Final Crisis that's going on now... it's just cool to see some of the groundwork and hints from he had in place back then coming around again now.  The Mister Miracle stuff especially ties into the current Final Crisis stuff, if anyone's reading that.

I'm usually for more action packed comics, but the characterization is absolutely INSANE. Backgrounds are sorta meh, but character expressions are the best. Perfect combo of bittersweet emotions and comedy-- what else you could you ask for from a manga about art students? XD

Hee, glad you think so. I'm a sucker for really developed or deep characters and Umino gives it all by the truckload. The comedy is like the fries on the side.

Currently, I'm following Hellboy and BPRD and all variations there of (YEAH LOBSTER JOHNSON!), Linda Medley's Castle Waiting (GIRL POWER YEAH!), and Fables and Jack of Fables (Fables is much better, but hey, gotta get the whole franchise rockin')

I've recently finished all of Sandman, still working on Watchmen and Black Dossier and V for Vandetta... DAMN THOSE LONG WINDED DENSE COMICS. I keep being distracted by Hellboy's POW BLAM SPLAT! I used to be obsessed with Uncanny X-men but then that run stopped or something and I fell out of the Marvel superhero fad.

I could keep going, I read a lot, but thems my favorites.

my my what a dashingly handsome fellow

I already mentioned the first part of the ongoing Umbrella Academy series much much earlier in this thread but.....
well Umbrella Academy is still shaping up quite nicely with it's latest installment Umbrella Academy: Dallas

Story by GERARD WAY and Art GABRIEL BÁ
http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/15-604/The-Umbrella-Academy-Dallas-1-of-6

the story is getting quite good with more than enough mysteries slowly unfolding to keep the reader involved as the main story arc continues to develop....

and if my word isn't good enough than the last instalment winning three eisners might be....go read these book monkeys!

I got a coupon for my school store today... so I ran and bought Absolute Watchmen.  It is easily the heaviest book I own.
I take forever to get through a page because of all the pretty colors~
seriously it is amazing

I also got rice boy for my birthday last month and read it for the third or fourth time I can't remember

also reading bone here and there, I was surprised because I had seen the rat monsters in an issue of highlights kids magazine when I like 8 or something and freaked when I saw them in the comic 10 years later, I had no idea where they were from
