So what comics are you reading?

So I picked up the first two books of Blacksad, and they're really good. The art is amazing, but for those of you who read french or can find translations on the internet (they're probably out there somewhere) the story is good as well -- the first book especially is a great read.  The second is good as well, but it tries to do racism with black and white animals, which doesn't work in a couple scenes.

I don't get why the world of Blacksad had to be populated by animals, though.  Sure, its an interesting gimmick, but the comic is better than that -- the story would work just as well with humans.  There's a couple interesting animal related lines and such, but there's no real reason why Blacksad is a cat and not a human.

Plus, the furry sex creeps me out.

I just came back from Holland where I saw Blacksad #3(!!!) but it was in Dutch... or French, like pretty much EVERY comic I found there go figure huh, duh Chair, duh. SO now I have to be inpatient for it to come out in English?? Needless to say the language barrier stopped me from buying a LOT of interesting looking comics ARGGGHHH!!!!

Who cares if its done with animals or not. Anthro art can add a removed commentary like it does in Blacksad (hard to do though in a respectable manner). At least Canales & Guarnido didn't use animals "just cuz dey like em", and put some rhyme and reason behind it.

The Incredible Change-Bots by Jeffrey Brown

"Far away in space, there is a planet full of robots able to change from robot form to vehicle form --- the Incredible Change-Bots! Leaving their war torn planet, the Change-Bots arrive on Earth, where their battle continues -- BUT AT WHAT COST?!

Part parody, part nostalgic tribute, part moral fable - with The Incredible Change-Bots Jeffrey Brown re-invents the shape changing robot genre into a heart stopping action comedy that’s full of romance, half drama, and epic battles! The first FULL-COLOR graphic novel from Jeffrey Brown is an all-ages friendly (one guy and some robots die) immersion into sci-fi fun."

HAHAHA i laughed, mind i REALLY wish he hadn't used MARKERS, CRAPPY MARKERS, to color it. but it oddly becomes part of the terrible charm ahaha.

technically? not a comic. but it just came out recently in paperback & it's worth picking up or at least taking a look at.

basically the art, prep, & sketch work that went into akira. there's a lot of extra shit, like the promo work for the movie & stuff. but ii think it's worth it just for the sketches frankly. but then again, i just like sketches. i got the original japanese book 5 years ago at an import store at a not so cheap price. amazon's selling it in english now for $20. so if you dig otomo, get on it.

Atomic Robo

"Two-Fisted Science!"

This is the bouncing baby release of a virgin company called Big 5 comics(which I can only hope is a GiantRobo reference), the lovechild of Brian Clevinger(8-bit Theater) and Scott Wegener. It's a six part mini-series with Issue One fresh on the stands as I write this. The title follows the exploits of ATOMIC ROBO, a robot created by Nikola Tesla in 1923. Now if this wasn't enough ( Tesla was the absolute shit! ) there is an awful lot of Sci-fi elements and Nazi Punching and according to Series co-creator, Scott Wegener  "Punching Nazis is very popular in comic books.”

“Robots! Monsters! Explosions! Evil geniuses and the lightning guns that kill them! That’s ATOMIC ROBO.

The concept is not terribly original, as far as first issues go Mignola's Amazing Screw-On-Head and even our very own Gabe's  DamfRobo ( you gotta move fast Chooch! ) give us much the same concepts and Mignola's had a lot more style doing it.
The art is simple and is trying perhaps a little too hard to be like Mike (Mignola) but still well executed although a little stark in details.
The writing in the first issue was just as straightforward and simple with just the right amount of smirking humor but again brief and lacking in any real meat.

.......and you know what I find that I don't care.

Nothing ground breaking or earth shattering. It's just a bit of fun......and sometimes comics should be about a bit of fun.

and you know what you should learn the awesome power and general psychosis laden wackiness that was Nikola Tesla too.
cuz he really was just that awesome

Anyone who hasn't read every single issue, should do so right.fucking.now

Warren Ellis' writing shines through in this series, Spider Jerusalem is my personal hero.

Set in a "Post-cyberpunk" world Spider Jerusalem is called down out of his Mountain Home, where he can be found dishevelled and bearded, to finish out his contract for the two more books he has left to write. He cannot write in the mountains, he has to be in The City to be able to write, thus his journey begins into the world of Journalism once more, after all, a writer needs somewhere to live and he needs insurance.

"It chronicles the battles of Spider Jerusalem, infamous renegade gonzo journalist of the future who is a homage to gonzo journalism founder Hunter S. Thompson.

Spider Jerusalem begins the story as a long-haired hermit living in a fortified hideaway on the side of a mountain, who has been retired from the City life, and from writing for a living, for five years. When he runs out of money and is threatened by his publisher (only ever referred to by Jerusalem as "whorehopper") to whom he owes two books, he is forced to pack his car and drive south back into The City, a twisted amalgam of pervasive consumerism, sex, violence, and drugs. The City (never named, but a monument resembling the Statue of Liberty appears to give it away as New York) is the largest in the world, and the center of the political and social culture. However, this futuristic culture is highly liberal, self-centered, and focused almost exclusively on present-day matters."

This book is PERFECT, seriously awesome and full of hardcore shit.

Also been reading up on Brandon Grahams previous publications, Pillow Fight, Perverts of the Unknown and Escalator, Brandon still remains up there at the top on my list of favourite comic artists.

I'm not quite halfway through this book, but it grabbed me by the balls on page 1 and hasn't let go yet.  Part Channel Zero, part V for Vendetta, this is what happens when citizens screwed over by the media go militant and get some revenge.  Packed full of informational tidbits crammed onto every page - quotes from Congress, facts, history - as fascinating as it is infuriating.

Johnathan Hickman is the new Brian Wood

NOT a Comic, but ACTUAL BOOK, recommended to me by Elio

The first half is a great history of comics, discussing everything from terminology to social divide to how we arrived at comics' current status.  I knew a lot of this stuff already, but it's still a great read for anyone... I'll likely give it to both Dan, so he can better understand some general stuff, and my girlfriend, since she's completely clueless about comics and this would be a great introduction to a lot of terms, concepts, and oddities of the comics world

Wei, you just sold me on that cover alone.

Transmet is grand, I had Spider as my avatar many moons ago.

Supermarket, by Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldson

It's been a long old time since the days Kristian posted here ("educated pencils", har har har), so it was neat to see his stuff pop up again in this book. It's changed a lot, from the really hard, angular stuff to looser brushwork and a really sharp style of coloring.
Anyways, Supermarket follows the adventures of a spoiled teenager named Pella in some indeterminate future of uber-capitalism and congress (a familiar Brian Wood theme I guess). It has Yakuza, the Porno Swede Mafia, street racing and just all around great design.

Bullet Points, by Michael J. Stracynski and Tommy Lee Edwards

I love Tommy Lee Edwards, ever since I read the Question miniseries he did with Rick Vietch a few years ago. Anyways, Bullet Points tells the "What if" story of the bullet that killed Dr. Erskine, shortly after he injected Steve Rogers with the super-soldier serum that turned him into Captain America, way back in the day. However, this time the bullet was fired before Erskine ever met Rogers, killing both him and an MP named Ben Parker. Bullet Points is the alternate history of the Marvel Universe from that point, and it was really quite good, shifting familiar faces under unfamiliar masks. The art was, as always with Edwards, gorgeous.

Hell yes, Bullet Points was the SHIZ-KNIGHT.  The art would have made that book alone but luckily it had a great story also.  And thanks for mentioning that Question mini because I will now buy that.

I Killed Adolf Hitler by Jason

For his latest graphic novel (the third in colour, the ninth to be published by Fantagraphics, following earlier works like Left Bank Gang and Why Are You Doing This?) Jason posits a strange, violent world in which contract killers can be hired to rub out pests, be they dysfunctional relatives, abusive co-workers, loud neighbours, or just annoyances in general — and as you might imagine, their services are in heavy demand.

One such killer is given the unique job of travelling back in time to kill Adolf Hitler in 1939... but things go wrong; Hitler overpowers the would-be assassin and sends himself to the present, leaving the killer stranded in the past. As always, I Killed Adolf Hitler is rendered in Jason's crisp deadpan neo-clear-line style, once again augmented by lovely, understated colouring.

Jason is still one of my favourite comic authors mmm.

& fuck yes I finally got a job at a comic shop. I'M GONNA BE POOR, but a bittersweet poor. I've read a lot of comics as of late of course, but right now this was one that stood out to me.

...

and then there's

NICK FURY AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. : SCORPIO

... my god... the action... the pain... the pyschedelic 60's mega-saturated, unrestricted colors that know now hint of subtleness... AND THE CRASHING MOTORCYCLES WHILE SMOKING A CIGAR WITH GUNS IN BOTH HANDS.
HAHAHA, I did not pay for this.
...beats me, man. Beats me why most dudes suck, sure as hell ain't my scene.

Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse

Follows a corpse controlled by a sentient maggot from the Hell Dimension. He solves paranormal mysteries and closes interdimensional gateways, with his mechanical sidekick and drinking buddy Mr. Pendulum and his femme fatale bodyguard. He has sex with immortal strippers, and drinks heavily.

Ben Templesmith's art is really interesting. It's kinda surreal, focusing on texture and mood rather than background details and whatnot. But you still know what's going on. He's the same artist behind 30 Days of Night, the comic.

empire, awesome crazy 70's space opera by howard chaykin & scifi novelist samuel delany. real hard to find, so good luck. the format is pretty cool. a lot of widescreen panels, both horizontal & vertically, & neat design montages that still progress the story.
this kind of straddles the line of graphic novel & novel with lots of illustrations, as there's huge panel then a small block of text to the side. more pic to word ratio though, which is why i posted it here & not in the literature thread.

ALRIGHTY, I've been eyeing the Will Eisner section at my comic store, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend which one to break into first, since haha yea I've never read any of his stuff? And I know I am missing out.

OTHERWISE:

I am, with this book, forever a Tony Millionaire/Uncle Gabby and Mr.Crow fan. I actually shrieked laughing at the horrible twists that happen to this peculiar duo and their absurd adventures! The morbid fate that often ends the comics is just... I can't talk about this comic properly right now, go read Tony Millionaire, NOW.

HAHA LOOK WHAT CAME IN AND I GOT RIGHT AWAY:
Moomin Volume 2 by Tove Jansson

It's just so peculiar, being a strip from the sixties, and from Europe. Reading it is definitely a nice withdrawal and insight on how else it could be done, used to, from usual comics and strips. I just... I just love Moomin hahahaha.
...beats me, man. Beats me why most dudes suck, sure as hell ain't my scene.

OH SNAP, TALKING ABOUT THE METABARON.  gooood stuff

Five Fists of Science is a HILARIOUS book.  I love all the shit they crammed into the page backgrounds and shit.  Definitely a book more people should check out.

I've been reading a lot of stuff lately, but they're not comics.

Hellboy Odder Jobs - series of short stories featuring the Big Red Guy 'n' Crew.  There's a really tense one involving hell dogs that was awesome

Wikinomics came in the mail yesterday, I've got the Black Dossier coming, also Read Before Burning which is a history of the CIA written by one of the former heads, and Reality Show: Inside the Last Great Television News War
