Man, that Little Nemo comic where a giant turkey came and ate Nemo's house, and then he fell down the turkey's throat into a lake of blood gave me the screams when I was a little fellow.

edit: Or the one where the Indians (or Native Americans, I guess) shot him full of arrows and then he fell off a cliff into a load of cacti. Or when the Fool Killers came up to beat the living shit out of Flip, Rodney King style...damn, in retrosepct, those where some pretty terrifying comics.

This book is stupid derivative crap. Has anybody else read this? I am pissed at Dark Horse for thinking it is cool because it publishes this melodramatic chris ware ripoff shit.

shhhhhhhh.... it's ok baby, let it all out. there thereeeeeeeee

Something I read a while back but just remembered now, is "THE TALKING HEAD" by Paolo Baciliero. It's about this dude who wakes up with a talking face on his penis, which ends up getting him hunted down by vicious porn directors.

I actually didn't think it was very good cus it just bounces around everywhere with little regard for ANYTHING, but it was still kind of charming. The use of a really minimal pink spot color made it great to look at too.

I'm going to take some time to explain what I like to call 'COMIX FOR SHIT', or 'POOP COMIX'! I of course mean comics you read will taking a nice orderly squat.

It takes a very specific mindset to create a poop comic, whether the creator is conscience of it or not. Seeing as how the ideal goal of these kind of stories is to hit you with maxxx amount of entertainment in a condensed amount of time, I almost think that little to no foresight for what is going to happen next is required to make it completely work, just total fire and forget comix spontaneity... if you have to think too hard about drawing it, then people are most likely going to think too hard about reading it. The pages have to be hard and fast, fleshing out the characters/environment or whatever isn't truely needed. It should almost be a polaroid of a different world, any history should be implied (if anything), not dwelled on... the NOW is more important then the BEFORE.

Aesthetically, panels should be big, and the way the characters look should hit you with what they're all about right off the bat with no pause. Color is a big no. Story-wise, if something truely amazing doesn't happen every three pages then you have failed as a poop artist. If I don't see a cow puking gasoline, or some dude shooting out fetuses through the pores in his hand, then I'll get bored, put down your shitty shit comic, and just whack off to the copy of Esquire sitting in the bin next to the toilet!!

PRIME EXAMPLES OF POOP COMIX:

LEGENDS FROM DARKWOOD by Christopher Reid and John Kantz (Antarctic Press)

Perhaps, nay, THE quintessential poop comic. It's about a town founded on an industry of unicorn meat, until one unicorn snaps and starts burning shit down. Other stuff happens, like a unicorn hunter who loses her magic uni-tempting powers after she gets drunk and loses her virginity. Truely the most amazing story squat I have read in my existence. Even at 142 pages, you can read this book in like 15 minutes!

EATMAN by Akihito Yoshitomi (translated and release stateside by VIZ)

It's got a dude who can eat anything, and shoot it out of his hand for later use. Classic mid-90's era poop gold manga.

SLUT GIRL by Isutoshi (can't remember)

Truely horrible porn, but truely amazing shitting material. It's about a nerd who meets a slut and they pork a lot. Fucking awesome layouts too.

Of course, you could argue that most of these things are what can make BAD, vapid, empty comix, but I dunno... they are also a huge part of what makes comics so appealing in the first place, and shouldn't be ignored. Whackiness and fun are integral cogs of what makes pages tick. Plus, nobody wants to read Chester Brown while taking a dump!

These are my personal addictions:

Also, I don't suppose this counts because I actually FINISHED reading them, but:

Seriously. Life and times of Scrooge McDuck is probably the best thing Disney has ever done. Don't let the whole "Corporate juggernaut squeezing the artistic life out of everything it touches" thing fool you. Don Rosa just loves the character, and uses him so well it hurts.

I just finished Sandman 3: Dream Country. I'm constantly amazed by the richness of the Sandman stories and how the character of Dream is simultaneously relatable and inscrutable. Also, this book has one of Gaiman's scripts in the back, which is great for aspiring comic writers to see how he works.

Oh, I also read Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness. Scott Pilgrim comics are so much nonstop fun, it's hard to describe. They also make great Poop Comics.

Wei looks like a Tony Moore junky to me.  But who can blame ya?  I still haven't completely recovered from him leaving Walking Dead.  The Exterminators is pretty damn cool.  I've been reading DMZ, pretty cool.  I'm a sucker for any comics military related.

Also picked up Zombee at the Phoenix Con, if you haven't seen this book you're missin out.  http://www.autoresdecomic.com/Autores/VictorSantos/Archivos/zombee_pages.html

Other than that I'm waiting for the new Death Dealer book coming out soon if not already and everything Robert Kirkman cranks out.  Been following Invincible and Walking Dead since the beginning.  Cerebus and Bone should be mandatory reading for anybody drawing comics I think.

And who can forget Pulpo, I musta read Vol. 3 four times already.

Viper, you should check out the Vertigo comic, The Losers by Andy Diggle and Jock.  A great little conspiracy/action/military story.  The story just finished last year and it's collected in 3 trades.

Gah, I've been reading alot lately.
I just got The Ultimates 2 vol.1 and Can't wait for the next one.
Been reading alot of Marvel with Civil War and now New Avengers and Mighty Avengers.  Great art on those books.  Just got the CD Marvel put out with 70 issues of Ultimate X-men on it(Great deal for 10 bucks).
Army of Darkness vs Marvel Zombies is funny so far, Ash gets there before the whole virus breaks out.

Stephen King's Dark Tower comic is aight, the art is tight and the story is interesting(I have not read any of the novels).

Word on the Don Rosa love. For fans of his stuff, I found this to be both enlightning and entertaining.

Haha! I've seen that. I love that it leaves the nephew's father a blatant mystery.

Amazing, AMAZING book. I just got it from the library on a whim and have been enjoying it immensely ever since. "The Building" in particular is just an all-around great story, and some of the parts of "Invisible people" are absolutely heart-wrenching.

Awesome book, once again.
