So what comics are you reading?

What I've been reading:

Just finished this issue the other night, it was pretty cool. I found it a bit hard to follow at times but I also have been sick and kinda on/off cold medicine and stuff and that crap really fucks with me. But I really enjoyed this comic, its different. I also really enjoy the artwork. The flat colouring style really gels with his lines and the world feels very original. I remember years ago initially seeing some King City issues in store and was kinda turned off by the art style but once the trade came out I picked it up and the art grew on me quite a bit and now I'm a huge fan of Graham's art.

It's more Battle Angel Alita: Last Order...so more tourney stuff. Though that seems like it is -finally- coming to a close, this arc has spanned so many volumes and while I enjoy the action and the artwork there were some plot threads earlier on in the series that I'd like to see moving again. That said I still really enjoy this series a lot and will keep picking up future volumes.

Just finished reading Diesel volume 1, which is the only one in print right now. Volume 2 is digital only but I am waiting for a print release. Anyway I got this along with his boxer hockey books at the Calgary Expo the other week. I really enjoyed this book though, the art is nice and the characters are great too. It's really short though but the price reflected that, as well as the art being black and white on the inside. Which is kinda too bad in a sense because Hesse's colours are incredible. Doesn't really detract from the book though at all, its still a good read.

Gonna start the new Cyberforce 'cause they were free and burn through some of the FCBD comics I got. I already read the Dragon Ball one haha, no intention of reading the Kenshin side or whatever 'cause that franchise has nooooo appeal to me whatsoever. I also finally need to start reading Kishiro's other comic, Aqua Knight (which I own all three volumes of haha)

Ales Kot's CHANGE #1 is online for free!

The set-up to the story is certainly interesting, especially the first few scenes. I started getting a bit lost towards the end of the middle, but the last page certainly has me curious about issue 2.

I just started reading Age Of Ultron, written by Brian Michael Bendis, drawn by Bryan Hitch (inked by Paul Neary), and colored by Paul Mounts.

It's pretty much a perfect dream team of creators, but the story is VERY bleak. I'll have to post again after I finish.

Ah well I can give my opinion on it.  It's a shitty story not worth the paper it was printed on.  The inclusion of Spawn character Angela is pretty hamfisted.  The only good thing so far I will say is Issue 10 AI which is more of a character study and growth of the Ant Man character.  Bendis has not been a good writer when it comes to ensemble casts.  He works better with small cast gritty stories like Daredevil and Moon Knight.  Basically like the last couple of universe wide events, the plotting is terrible.

~creeps into the bendis action days later~
age of ultron was miserable, i made it two issues and i read for free thanks to work, so i can only imagine how i'd feel if i had paid for them. HOWEVER bendis is writing both the uncanny and all-new x-men books right now and they have both been spectacular (especially uncanny, fraser irving+ilyana woop). i think the problem is more the amount of editorial involvement in those big dumb event books.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, BATTLING BOY
if you have not heard about this book, paul pope has been talking about it since 2006 and has stated that it will include a 50-page fight scene. it's also about a 12-year old boy beating up monsters so basically it's perfect for all you voiders out there. my shop just got an advance copy of part 1. i'm not allowed to post interiors because i would like to continue reading advance copies of this stuff, but there it is in all its advance copy glory!

some things it includes:
pretty colors, animal shirts that give the wearer the animal's attributes, a taxi-eating monster, a dude that bears a striking resemblance to thor, mummy vampire ghouls, futuristic technology, social commentary(?), MURDER

so basically it's awesome and comes out this october, watch for it

What's the ideal Paul Pope work to start with for someone who has never read his stuff? (Also don't get mad at me for not having read his stuff, I'm kind of late to hop on the comics train :/)

I've been reading Amala's Blade and Godzilla: Half Century War. And for online stuff I'm reading Milonogiannis' Aptera

and Connor Williumsen's Treasure Island

Ahmed, good choices! Especially Godzilla:HCW since I worked on that with James! :D

For Paul Pope I highly recommend 100% or Heavy Liquid. I haven't read his entire catalog, but those I enjoyed most. I'm a little more biased towards Heavy Liquid due to the amazing colors.

Such a fun read and it's got me all excited for that Zygote book he's got coming out soon.

as a quality comic slave, i'm reading some new number ones for this week! so tomorrow you should look out for.....

SHELTERED- a new series from image by people i've never heard of. it's about this bomb shelter compound full of apocalypse survival nuts and there are "internal conflicts" and shit goes DOWN! the art is just really nice and pleasing to the eye and the story is off to a great start. this book definitely has my attention, check it out!

ADVENTURE TIME, CANDY CAPERS: finn and jake are missing and PB puts peppermint butler in charge of defending the candy kingdom. if you don't love peppermint butler your heart is made of stone. read it.

also, the second issue of killjoys continues to be weird/cool. and YAMBLR IS BACK IN YOUNG AVENGERS Y'ALL!

so I'm still getting caught up on Last Order. i like it & it's a lot more interesting than most stuff coming out but its weird. i mean im still on board after the ice age vampire tangent & the dick monster & the main character slowly turning into a cat, but now, it's just become DBZ with physics.

"Time for my super secret power attack... it strikes with the temperature of a plasma torch [diagram followed by a kinda neat attack] gasp it had no effect! hey how did you survive that?"

"by using my super secret coriolis effect block. I spun a little & it siphoned all that heat away like water getting flushed down a toilet... [another diagram] now it's time for my super swcret counter attack!"

[repeat for 4 volumes]

its gonzo & silly & I equal parts like it, wish they'd hurry the fuck up already, & kinda want to parody it.

lately ive been grabbing crazy older british stuff. like rogue trooper, nemesis the warlock,  & strontium dog. hardnosed & a lot of times just plain mean. a comic shop by my old place three a shitton of really good stuff hardcore big 2 fan boys wouldnt touch in an eight cent bin. like I got all of mcmahon's Last American miniseries for 32 cents. the art in that is so fucking geometric & unique, its great.

lately the only monthly ive been getting is Prophet. because holy fuck.

I thought the dick monster was hilarious, I loved it. Also not objecting the whole robo catgirl thing over here haha. But yeah right now it feels like the arc is winding down but its winding down so slowly, it'd be cool to just end it totally soon.

I also need to check out Prophet too.

this book is 450 pages of awesome. if you like your comics with a healthy amount of feminism this is definitely one i recommend checking out. i picked it up because i read fast and needed to kill time at work, expecting it to be just a nice coming of age story. jesus, was i wrong!

it's basically the story of the author hitching around italy as a teenager in the 80's, told in excruciating detail. things get really interesting when she gets separated from her friend and the italian men basically start viewing her as a piece of meat. the way she depicts her own emotional changes is really unique, honestly something i think would be at home in a comics lit class.
READ IT

Scatterlands finally got its own site, which is cool since I had seen it before on Warren Ellis' site but never really followed it. It's written by Warren Ellis and drawn by Jason Howard. I really love the linework and limited use of color. Red being the main color used in this comic so far, and it's used sparingly but pops in the right places. Somewhere in the story the color switches to blue, so I'm interested in seeing what kind of turn the story takes at that point. But yeah, beautiful work and the writing is good too. It makes me wish Howard's other work looked like this, but I guess this particular style wouldn't work as well for those stories which I think are aimed more for kids. Anyways I hope he does more stuff like this in the future 'cause its way rad.

If you like superhero comics with a twist! SHADOWEYES by Ross Campbell is a webcomic you should all be checking out. It follows the story of Scout - who has been turned into a creature she has called "Shadow Eyes" - in an alternate, cyber-grunge, universe. According to Ross, its actually set somewhat in the "past" too. Shadoweyes is a vigilante taking law and justice into her own hands as well as facing issues the "average" 17-year-old girl has to ensue.

As usual with Ross Campbell's work, the artwork is beautiful and insanely detailed, the character designs are utterly fantastic and the scripting is well paced and well written.

I dont know just check it out because it is the shit. http://www.shadoweyes.net/

I don't want to be one of those people who barge into a conversation but....

I've been burning my way through a webcomic called Tower of God.

Simple premise; people from all over the multiverse come to a multidimensional tower in an attempt to reach the top. The prize; a wish. It's originally written in Korean but I read the translation here http://www.batoto.net/comic/_/comics/tower-of-god-r1
The art starts iffy, but progressively gets better. The writing however is top notch from the start; and continues to get better as it goes on. It also has a really nice format where you just scroll down to read the 'chapter', which is probably the equivalent of about 10 or so pages.

Stigmata by Lorenzo Mattotti and Claudio Persanti..
I picked this book up at the library on a whim because of the cover art. It's about an alcoholic dude who wakes up one day with stigmata. The storytelling is great and I am crazy about the Expressionist influences it's got going on.

Most recently I've been reading some of the old Sandman comics. I forgot how intense the emotions are in the first few issues.

I also picked up a newer science fiction series from IMAGE called BLACK SCIENCE by Rick Remender. It's got a lot of themes and imagery inspired by classic science fiction and horror adventure pulps, and so far is pretty fun to read.

Bent, that second page.
That girl on that second page.
Trying not to go all feministic here, but I hate the girl poses in almost all comics. I mean. How neccessary is it that the artist twists their spine like that. It's not natural at allll, and it just looks really uncomfortable, like she has to hold her arms out or she'll topple over. I mean what is the point   -__-
Sorry. It just. It irks me  ^.^;;

On a side note.
Has anybody read 'Rainbow in the Dark'?
I've been dying to pick up a copy, and I actually bought the digital version through IndyPlanet, but there was some issues with downloady stuff and I still don't have it.

I don't like it either, but that's not why I'm reading it. I love old science fiction stuff, and that's what this comic is all about. The actual artist for the pages is the one for the first cover, and there isn't much of that stuff going on.

I haven't really been reading much comics lately(ironically after I swore off reading superhero comics, I realized that was 99% of what I read). But recently I've been really getting into Moebius' stuff, like Blueberry and The Incal.

I thought Blueberry was cool, Incal was alright. Something about it's story didn't jell with me.
