ARCHETYPES: Knowing your Characters' Roles

YES! An event can be a herald! I noted from the mentor down to the threshold guardian that they don't have to be people! Think about the movie Armageddon (the one with Bruce Willis); the Herald technically was a hail of comets hitting the earth.

In your case, if you can justify the death of Nina to be the beginning of everything in his character arc, his Call to Adventure, if you will, then it's fine.

Epo - The Shapeshifter  I couldn't find anything else to suit Epo except the shapeshfiter. She plays both sides of the fence, as a person lacking any real emotions for another person or group she goes with the tides to follow whoever might benefit her the most financialy and in a protection sence.

Ebony, Ivory and other computer avatars - Threshold Guardians  Epo's computers are what make her shine. Without them and using them, she'd be unable to do her general computer work. They work has assistants in the 'virtual world' of the internet.

Scarlett - Catalyst Hero/Threshold Guardian  Scarlett is obviously a woman who works for the man. Her agenda is not really known because she works for the VCPD agenda. But later she turns out to be a catalyst, purposely stirring emotions in her enemies just for fun.

I tried. :<

This is gives me much insight on people's current events.

However i'm not sure what it's called when the main hero's story is told based on side-characters' actions. Once i figure out these roles. I'm participating.

Like the tridimenional character thread, thanx again Zato.

I haven't submitted my character yet but I wanted to give this a shot and see if I understand everything properly.

The God Slayer: Catalyst Hero / Shadow
The God Slayer is a catalyst hero because he is a static element within the story. He does not grow or change with other characters, he only affects others. He spreads fear, hatred, and loathing among the citizens of the city, but also hope. He does not think of his targets, only acts upon them, he destroys “bad” people as much as good, more often in a place like Void City. As a result, some view him in a good light, as a vigilante. He is seen as a tool by both sides, a piece to be moved rather than as an ally. He is Gregory’s Shadow, the thing inside his head that threatens to swallow the man’s humanity and crush his will. The God Slayer is not capable of knowing he threatens Gregory, he only perceives a block in his path.

Gregory: Cynical Hero / Shapeshifter / Threshold Guardian
Gregory is a cynical hero because he will do whatever he has to do in order to survive. He is forced into the role of caretaker and handler for the God Slayer against his will, a role that puts his life in danger and taxes his humanity. The God Slayer is Gregory’s enemy and ally because while the God Slayer’s actions lead to problems for Gregory, the being is also Gregory’s protector in rough times. Though he sometimes toes the line between anti-hero and cynical hero, Gregory’s tendency to follow the path that ensures his own survival rather than what is right makes the difference clear. He’s perfectly willing to change sides, allies, or any number of other things to ensure that he survives to see another day. He wants human contact, to have friends, but he is willing to betray those friends if he needs to in order to survive. He is also willing to wear whatever skin he has to in order to secure companionship from anyone, at least long enough to get what he needs. He is a good individual, but has a weak will. Because of his attempts to keep the God Slayer contained, Gregory also functions as a threshold guardian for the other personality, a daily block to his goals.
I can't be held accountable for guarding thecastle by myself, it's a big place... was a big place.

NOTE: Some of this is subject to change depending on the outcomes of a few battles. (And if some particular owners have other ideas.) These are just as I have things planned to move so far. :-\

Kotori Ky LaDiablo servers as a Cynical Hero. She is completely obsessed with her own goal and has begun to ignore her responsibilities and those around her in her single-minded focus. If she helps anyone right now, it is only because she feels they will be useful to her or by accident.

Daimer serves as Kotori's strongest current Mentor. Mysterious and close-mouthed, he protects Kotori when necessary and tries to subtlety guide her towards some goal of his own.

The Seal within Kotori's blood is the first Threshold Guardian that Kotori has to deal with. The first great puzzle, challenge, and impediment to her current Goal.

Agent Black is set up to become Kotori's first real Herald/Shadow. The bringer of Kotori's first major change and the one/first person in VOID City that she actually and literally fears. *This is subject to the outcome of current battles taking place. May have to change.*

Mize will take up the mantel of Herald/Threshold Guardian in his future interactions with Kotori. Standing in her way after her first major change, he will also serve to point her towards a new path and set her a new goal once her current one has been resolved...

Ashito may serve as a Herald/Mentor for Kotori around the same time that Mize takes his place as Herald. Depending on the situations, he may bring some much needed changes to Kotori at a critical junction after her first grapple with her Shadow.

Leave it to Sergio to serve as Kotori's Trickster. His comical creepiness combined with his desire to turn what at that point will be a deadly-dangerous being into a dress-up doll without seeming to care will serve to bring Kotori back down a peg or two as well as confuse and amuse her off and on. He is one particularly odd human that will continually keep her guessing.
You're not special. Deal.

I'm new to character designing, so this was extreamly helpful. in fact, I even came up with a new character concept while reading it (I might submit him to void when I get his design fleshed out more). thanks a lot!

While I don't have anything for this thread (yet), I wanted to let the new kids know of this to play with the idea and interact with other characters in void.

Lets see how far this'll go once again

Sweet! I guess I'll fill this out then! I did it back in the day but deleted the original because it was crazy outdated. I could have used smaller headshots but I was lazy and just stole the size from the first post's examples.

Angela Rudell is an Anti-Hero. While she slightly leans towards the Cynical Hero archetype as well, I believe anti-hero fits her more. Angela was put in her current situation without her control and has no desire to be a hero. She is ultimately just trying to get out of the Masked Men, she doesn't care what happens next.

Julia Bordeaux fits into the Mentor role. She spends a lot of time directly and indirectly teaching Angela about life outside of the organization. She also does her best to support and protect Angela.

Cora Rudell is the Herald. She comes back into Angela's life, seemingly out of nowhere, and takes her to the Chuchunaa Islands. She offers Angela the chance to learn about who she is and see if her goals are actually possible.

Qadan/The Masked Men are the Shadow. They have essentially kept Angela imprisoned most of her life and have lead her down a path of darkness.

Kateri was a Threshold Guardian. On multiple occasions she attempted to ruin Angela's life and tried to kill her.

Gentoo fits into the Trickster role. While he also leans towards the mentor role, Gentoo often brings comic relief to the story and doesn't hesitate to call Angela on her bullshit.

Gabriel Cavallero is a Tragic/Catalyst Hero.  Former Antichrist and Moon Child, now a mystical exorcist trying to atone for past events as a wanderer.  This in turn sometimes makes him a Catalyst Hero.  He is currently an outcast exiled to the Void for actions that led to many deaths in the Order.

Maria (The Beast) is Cavallero's Shadow.  She is the crystallization of Cavallero's fate and took it upon herself to replace him as an antichrist.  To that end, she became a mindless beast bearing the sin of mankind.  Childhood friend and first love Cavallero seeks to free her from the role that was originally his.  She has currently been sealed by the order because she cannot be killed or exorcised.  New seals are added daily in an effort to stem her growing miasma.

The Heretic is a Threshold Guardian/Trickster.  A shard of The Beast that infected Cavallero.  It takes the form of a satanic version of himself and constantly taunts him in his dreams with visions of mass destruction and wanton slaughter.  It is through the Heretic that Maria shares a bond to Cavallero and is aware of his movements.

The Steel Emperor is a Mentor (not pictured).  The man who trained Cavallero into the exorcist he is today.  Similarly an outcast from the Order, he was allowed to train the boy because of the similar treatment they have.  At times emotionally and physically abusive because he knows what Cavallero is, he became a father figure to Cavallero after the death of his adoptive father.

Lady Id is a Threshold Guardian/Herald.  She can be considered the governor of Outer Void and has established her own brand of law and order on a Darwinian scale.  Only the strong survive and she reaps the benefits.  In truth, she is a minor demon who reveals to Cavallero the system that has been established.

Asmodeus is a Threshold Guardian/Shadow.  Goes by the alias Jack Francisco.  A Demon Lord who once considered King Solomon to be his equal and the only human to be judged so.  He has currently manifested physically into a world driven into despair and is currently the Ruler of the Center City of the Void.  He sees his actions as a necessary evil as he is simply doing his job and preparing the world for what is to come.  His wish is for Cavallero to take up his fate once more.

Note: these characters are outside VOID, except Cecilia.

Cecilia Demeas is the anti-hero of her story. She has set to her path after many relucant and impossible to dodge situations. She will eventually be labeled as a hero, but not by choice.

Emily Highwind is a herald in her story. She is a commanding Lieutenant, and delivers missions to Cecilia and delivers the surfaced will of Alex's grandfather. She is also usually the one to see when someone needs to evolve to the next level. Her mission is to escort Alex Febger and guide him, delivering the chance that will turn him into a full blown hero. I don't consider her a mentor as she doesn't teach either heroes anything about their destiny or powers.

Alex Febger is the hero of his story. He is given a task by his grandfather in a will, which is delivered to him by Emily. He sets on to his journey accompanied by Jacques.

hmm, what direction should I take her from here?

i think this is a question more people need to be asking. it's really easy in a format like void to keep things going on a status quo (trust me, i know), but try having a plan for your character to develop along. don't just know their current role, but know where you'd like them to end up. from there you can arrange obstacles to push them along accordingly.

THROWING THIS BACK INTO THE LIMELIGHT Coz I want to try and when it was first brought to my attention I was working on whiplash.

Wizzie Belles is an anti-hero! She didn't ask for any of this bullshit, even if she did trigger it herself and it wasn't her initial intent to live in Void City. Wizzie appears to have very little control of her life and supernatural situations that happen to her.

Wizzie's brother, Houdini, is a herald as though it is not yet clear how he is the reason Wizzie has to take upon the change of living in Void City.

Mammon is a threshold guardian ever since Wizzie and him had a nasty run-in back in Whiplash, hospitalising them both. Ever since that incident, Wizzie still has bitter feelings towards the Murphy's law member.

Nyasuu is a herald as she introduces the legend of the Star Child too Wizzie, which is a big turning point in Wizzie's arc but she is also a threshhold guardian as she did happen to stab Wizzie in the chest when in a trance state (OR DID SHE?)

okay okay okay I know Roy isn't officially introduced into Wizzie's arc yet but I DON'T CARE. Roy is a herald as well as a trickster - BECAUSE OF REASONS YOU'LL LATER DISCOVER. (also art by bl00chikin because like I said there's no official comic yet but JUST WAIT).

This mysterious shapeshifter is Spirit. Spirit is a strange seemingly identical being to Wizzie's natural form (but a lot stronger looking). What Spirit is and her relation to Wizzie is currently unknown. When Wizzie asks who she is Spirit returns with an ambiguous response.

Vivian River is Wizzie's mentor and acts like an (angry) older sister to Wizzie. Vivian's streetwise knowledge and hard as nails attitude helps Wizzie get out of sticky situations - but Vivian never can seem to prevent Wizzie getting in them in the first place.

The Voice is one creepy motherfucker and is also Wizzie's shadow. Voice interrupts Wizzie's dreams and causes them to be disturbing and seemingly has something to do with Nyasuu's trance state back in 'Star Child'. He also appears to have plans for Wizzie.

Wizzie's other best friend, Xia, is also a mentor but more so a trickster and is more of a comic-relief character but supports and helps Wizzie a lot as a friend.
