Quarantine Resource Aggregation Thread

Quarantine Resource Aggregation Thread
« on: Mar 16, 2020, 03:34 PM »
Well, looks like lots of us are stuck at home for a while. I’ve been seeing a lot of news and newsletters and such reminding people about free resources, announcing new ones fur this new isolated time, and even coronavirus sales.

I’ve been babbling about these in the chat, so why don’t I collect them and post them here. Feel free to post with any you find:

Always legally free:

YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY. It may be physically closed, but there are probably online resources and services you can access from home for free using your library card (they probably have or are working on how to get a new library card right now): Ebooks! Audiobooks! Magazines! Newspapers! Music! Scholarly databases! Photo archives!  Lynda.com! Mango Languages! Kanopy! Scienceflix! You'll have to go through your library's website, so do some investigating and see what you can get access to!

Borrowing Ebooks will probably involve using an app like Overdrive or Kindle. See what your library recommends. They may even have their own app.
https://www.overdrive.com

There may even be huge digitized archives of stuff you wouldn’t be able to go through regularly anyway:
https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/
https://sfpl.org/locations/main-library/sf-history-center/digital-collections

PROJECT GUTENBERG for when you want to access that Public Domain goodness without going through the formality of “borrowing” an ebook or letting Amazon know even more about you:
https://www.gutenberg.org

THE INTERNET ARCHIVE
Is… is this legal? Is it legal that I can play Number Munchers online using this?
Just a wealth of content. I’ve really enjoyed listening to old radio dramas using this.

GOOGLE ARTS AND CULTURE “Visit” museums and famous places! Rotate 3D models of things!

COLOR OUR COLLECTIONS for lineart you can print and color for free!

Moog and Korg’s synth apps are free for the time being. I know nothing about how these work but you poke at it and it sounds like you know what you’re doing?

QUARANTINE SALES AND SPECIALS! The economy demands money offerings! Its hunger is insatiable and its displeasure makes us quiver!

Not necessarily a personal endorsement, but you’re probably getting newsletters and stuff with these, too, so may as well see if anyone’s interested. Besides, I get a certain amusement out of some of these so I want to make a record:

Oh yeah! About the sale at The Art of Aaron Blaise!
You can stack newsletter discount codes on top of sales, so if you decide to buy anything, use the code "NEWSLETTER2020" to get an extra 10% off.
(If you're at all curious about buying multiple courses, the Annual Premium Membership lets you just hoard whatever you want during the year and you can keep it even after it expires.)

Not much for today. Here's another for the COVID-19 themed sales:
Reuben Lara is donating 10% to GlobalGiving Coronavirus Relief fund.
On top of that, if you use the code "freetime" you get 10% off.
