Colour Jam!

Colour Jam!
« on: Mar 10, 2014, 02:30 PM »

Sometimes I just wanna colour. Throw it down and just relax. Sometimes I just wanna practice, and sometimes I just wanna chill and take a break from drawing. I think it's pretty fun to colour other people's art, and maybe you will too!

Wanna see your art coloured by all the talented void peeps? Then post some line art for us! Maybe it'll help you think about your art in fresh new ways, and see it in a whole new light.

  • Try to keep the resolution high, at least 300. This makes it way easier to work with.
  • If you wanna post some sort of reference, feel free! Just know that peeps can totally ignore it if they feel like it
  • Use as loss-less a format as you can to keep your lines crisp. Try to steer away from bmp and jpg. Png is okay, and tiff is great. If you use one of the more file-sharey sites, you can also just share strait PS files.

Colour the stuff you see here and post it! Don't worry about being amazing, I can't imagine anyone that wouldn't be thrilled at having their art coloured! There are lot's of talented (and even professional!) colourists hanging about, so feel free to ask questions and get advice. I'll try to keep a few resources on colouring and stuff in here, though we have some pretty extensive threads on the matter already. Don't forget to check out the Resources & Tutorials subforum in the Void University. Share cool sites/tools you think people should know about, and I'll put it up here!

oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh I need this i am SO BAAAAD at colouring. I've uploaded the PSD file of the worst coloured page from my last Gray fight. I do not know what I am doing. I was actually thinking about this just last night. How do i do lighting for heavy and intense situations in a well lit room? I don't want it to look like all the lights suddenly went out. I don't know what I am doing ahhh

Here's some clean hi res art!

I'll probably bust out some colors in here at some point. Since it's what I do for a living I don't do it as much for fun these days.

I don't get to do nearly enough fun coloring in my film.

By fun, I mean red.

I didn't reread the comic first, so I was all like "why's she changing cloths while shouting?" and "where the fuck do those shards start and end?" and "those are totally clouds and she's totally wearing a weird short skirt that I don't know how to deal with cause they're not shorts, yep yep. Yep."

But Fred, don't you have a film and a comic to work on? No, I decided today I would relax and have fun before I burn out and my definition of fun is colouring angry ghost girls, shut up.

Here's some clean hi res art!

Holy shit that's lineart. So good to colour. So good.

Okay, going back to work now, I've done enough colours red to be re-energized a bit.

Ps. Cats don't got horns yo, I would still think she was a cow or some form of goat if you didn't make all those cat jokes. It's just too strong of a bull signifier to be overpowered by the much subtler cat attributes, it's been bothering me forever!

That came out awesome! Thanks for coloring it!

And Angie's actually a made up species of monster cat things, so she's not actually a full on cat, that's why there's the horns+big nasty monster form. I just like treating her as a cat in the mini comics because cats.

(also red is best color so it's okay)

Damn LeFred, I really like the pink, yellow, blue thing you're doing. It's really intense.

And Shen, you totally need to relax, that looks great! You should colour like that all the time!

I'm messing with Jong's page every so often, and I thought peeps would like some flats. They're pretty simple, but it should make it easier to jump off from, all you gotta do is change the colours around. https://mega.co.nz/#!458AnTCA!RVYC85YQnODwvgtznRis0rR3ELYfucEO-8XbWYjWr54

This is the lineart for the last page of the Pigeon Princess vs Anish Anrit comic, maybe you'll have fun colouring it? It's not really a comic page though. https://mega.co.nz/#!Zo9hSLAR!h6imASoEVS1qmZfEjlOhSaiw2cxRPNASzGo68YcNML0

For the time being, have some lineart I did from all the way back in 2007. One of Flammie from the Secret of Mana, the other of the Sphinx.

My first experimentation with markers on comics. Jong I hope this is okay to stick in my portfolio as a color example for comic coloring.

test out to see if your inks resist to markers. A lot of them don't :(

Definitely some wise words, Pocky! I'm glad I found out my favorite brush pen doesn't work well with my markers before I used it all over my comic :|

Re: Colour Jam!

you may be using a water based brush pen. There's some miscommunication about dye based and pigment based ink, but I've yet to prove which one is more durable. If you're looking for a brush pen that resists marker, this is the one that has been loyal to me: http://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Pocket-Brush-Refills-GFKP3BPA/dp/B002LJRKN8

Hmm. Yeah, I have a Pentel Color Brush Pen, but upon further investigation I think my ink is dye-based. So I will definitely have to go get a pigment ink based one because the dye really smudges BAD with copics. I even waited 48 hours for the ink to dry before using copics on it.

This is really good to know though because I was super sad I couldn't use it with my copics! I've played with the copic and micron brush pen and this pentel just blows it out of the water.

Thanks Pocky! :D
