Suggest me some Anime

Suggest me some Anime
« on: Sep 27, 2013, 09:01 AM »
So I'd like to start an anime thread for suggesting new/old shows to watch, trailers of upcoming seasons, etc.

I HAVE ONE RULE

-Do NOT make fun of other people's tastes.
Not everyone likes the same stuff you do, and you do not have the right to make fun of the things they are passionate about.  I don't care how lame or stupid the show may seem to you, it is not your heaven mandated mission to make them stop liking it.

Kill La Kill thus far is the only new show coming out that I care about. I usually wait until reviews start coming in before I check anything else out.

I'm currently watching Attack on Titan, Genshiken Nidaime, Watamote, Michiko and Hatchin, and Nichijou.

My go to anime that I always recommend people are the following, many are series that most everyone has already seen, but they're necessary to list in the event there's someone that hasn't actually seen it like Bebop or EVA. I broke these down into various lists, there's some repeats on there in each category.

Anime Series that I love and want everyone else to watch
Revolutionary Girl Utena (I know who is destined to be my truest friend if they love this as much as I do)
Madoka Magica
Kino's Journey (I can't recommend this enough, it's a series that ranks up there with Bebop in terms of series that everyone on the planet should like)
Rose of Versailles
Monster (on the manga side of things, pretty much the entire Naoki Urasawa library is amazing)
Attack on Titan
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gurren Lagann
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Baccano
Vision of Escaflowne
Cowboy Bebop
Eden of the East
Samurai Champloo
Beck
Hellsing Ultimate
Haibane Renmei
Paranoia Agent
FLCL
Moribito
Planetes
Mushishi
Black Lagoon
Fruits Basket
Azmumanga Daioh
Paradise Kiss
Mawaru Penguindrum

Anime Films
Akira
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
Summer Wars
Ninja Scroll
The Place Promised in Our Early Days
Ghost in the Shell
Nausicaa
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
The Cat Returns(pretty much the whole Ghibli library)
Wings of Honneamise
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Cat Soup
Redline
Neon Genesis Evangelion 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0

Anime for Beginners (people that aren't into it but want to check it out. These are all easy to get into and friendly to new audiences. Some of these were on old Toonami)

Black Lagoon
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Michiko and Hatchin
Moribito
Kino's Journey
Trigun
Eden of the East
Fullmetal Alchemist
Tenchi Muyo (only the original OVA and TV series)
Outlaw Star
Afro Samurai
Tiger and Bunny

an Angie list with a distinct lack of Saber?  I am genuinely shocked. (not being sarcastic)

Oh shit, I forgot Fate/Zero! haha I wouldn't highly recommend the Fate/Stay Night anime unless someone's already a Fate fan, but Fate/Zero is amazing. I was looking at my DVD shelf for titles and Fate/Zero's set doesn't come out until November ;-;

I think my anime tastes are a little unique, since I'm not a huge anime fan in general, but LOVE a few series in particular.

Some shows I've enjoyed particularly:
Soul Eater (especially for the art—stuff is crazy trippy!)
Death Note
Evangelion
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (not the original, it's totally melodramatic and cheesy)
Paranoia Agent
...I know there's more but I can't think of them.

And then the more mainstream/well-known ones that I still love:
ANYTHING by Ghibli Studios (I still need to see a lot of them!)
Dragonball (I personally prefer it to Dragonball Z or any of the other later ones)
Naruto (look up a list of filler episodes and skip them, otherwise you'll want to shoot yourself for half of the show)
Pokémon (although really just for the nostalgia; it's not that great on its own now that I look back on it hahah)
Inuyasha (it's been a while since I've seen it though, so...)

I'll update if I can remember the other shows I've enjoyed. I don't watch anime often, so none of it is on the top of my head right now.

EDIT: Written whilst Bobo was typing!

Ahh I've only seen 13 of the shows on Angie's TV list and 11 of the movies. I need to get to work

Series I've enjoyed not mentioned thus far:
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monty Cristo
Silent Moebius
Super Boink!/Tonde Burin
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
Death Note
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Soul Eater
Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure (sorta play on Evangelion)
Read or Die!
R.O.D. the TV (a Read or Die! sequel)
(I enjoyed the first 2/3 of YuYu Hakusho and Inuyasha, does that count? :/)

Anime Movies:
Blood: The Last Vampire
Blue Submarine No.6
Kiki's Delivery Service
Howl's Moving Castle (yeah pretty much any Ghibli as they said)

I got some suggestions. Here they are:

-DragonBall
-DragonBall Z
-Magic Knight Rayearth
-MegaMan OVA
-Inuyasha

I know that everyone pretty much has watched DragonBall, but I'm just putting it in as a suggestion. No offense.

I used to watch Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z when I was younger.

Anyway, the anime I like is:

Fist of the North Star
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (The Part 3 OVA)
Persona 4: The Animation
Sailor Moon (I watched it as a kid, at least)
Trigun
Maybe a few others I don't remember.

Eureka Seven - I have no clue how to summarize this, but it's basically a show about mechas and people surfing the skies and military conflict. It's a bit slow paced in some parts and other episodes are somewhat fillers but it's a nice watch when the action kicks in.

Detective Conan - Detective show (duh) about a guy who is transformed into his younger self by some criminals, and now tries to track them down while hiding his situation and solving other crimes along the way.

I was gonna recommend more but Angie beat me to them already! I'll recommend more when I remember them

I can add on more, but here are a few I highly recommend:

-Kore wa zombie desu ka
-Mardok Scramble
-Coil Children (Denno Coil)
-From the New World(shinsekai yori)

Note: Shinsekai Yori is much darker than Denno Coil and Mardok Scramble put together. Not for the weak of heart. Also, you can't shut your brain off when you watch it, because it's one of those series that makes you think and stuff.
just browsing here and there

I just realized nobody mentioned:

-Cromartie High School (recommending so hard)
-Spice and Wolf (watching it for the economics is a legit reason, no joke)
-Aria the Animation (slice of life... ON MARS)
-Medabots (instead of mons, there are robots. the protagonist gets one that hates him. hilarity and action ensues)
-Rune Soldier Louie (what if the mage in your standard D&D party has maxed out strength... and minimum Intelligence? High fantasy hilarity ensues)
-Little Witch Academia (brought to you by some of the guys who made Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann; but first they made...)
-INFERNO COP (...the John Freeman of anime)

Re: Suggest me some Anime

Oh shiit Medabots! I always forget about that one but that show was a lot of fun.

Sure I'll toss a few into the mix here. I used to really dislike a lot of anime a few years ago, just before I joined the site. I had maybe like 2-3 series I liked? Now my list has grown a lot :x. I'll probably end up missing a few...

Major Inspirations to me:
  • Dead Leaves
  • Redline
  • Kyousogiga
  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
  • FLCL
  • Diebuster
  • Xam'd: Lost Memories
  • Little Witch Academia
  • Hellsing Ultimate
  • Birdy The Mighty: Decode
  • TekkonKinkreet
  • - Pretty much anything I failed to list here that is by Takeshi Koike and Hiroyuki Imaishi
  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Afro Samurai

Stuff I like:
  • Desert Punk
  • Those new Evangelion movies, and so far only really 2.22
  • Medabots
  • Mardock Scramble (only watched movie 1 though so far)
  • Trigun and Trigun: Badlands Rumble
  • Witchblade
  • Dreameater Merry (guilty pleasure, can't explain why I like this one :x)
  • Bakemonogatari (sorta?)
  • Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
  • Deadman Wonderland

What I am looking forward to:
  • Blazblue: Alter Memory
  • Kyousogiga's TV series
  • The Bayonetta Movie

  • Kill La Kill of course

A few years ago, my list would probably be much bigger, but I don't remember half the stuff I've seen and I don't know if I'd recommend the rest anymore...
What I've watched/rewatched recently and LOVED THE FUCK OUT OF are FLCL, which seems to be an unanimous choice and Mononoke, because it's so stylish and psychedelic. Also Panty and Stocking, even though the stories are pretty stupid, they fucking know HOW to tell them and infuse them with mad energy to make everything exciting.

I love that FLCL is only 6 episodes so it's not much of an investment. Even though I fucking bought it when they released it with 2 episodes a disc $30 a piece ughhhhh ANIME FANS THESE DAYS ARE SPOILED ROTTEN. Don't get me started on buying anime in the VHS days when you had to pay $30 for 3 episodes on a shitty VHS tape. I recently started tossing my old anime VHS tapes for the series I had already upgraded to DVD and it was tragic.

I like that it's become a trend for series to only be 12-13 episodes instead of 26-56 since I just don't have time for long running series. I really really want to get up to date with the HunterXHunter anime since they're finally animating my favorite part. But I haven't gotten to watch it since the beginning of the York Shin arc which is like 8 million episodes ago. I guess I could just watch that arc and skip the piece of crap Greed Island arc to get to my favorite, but it's still a big time investment.

I don't watch a whole lot of anime, and most of the stuff I would have said already has been, but

I watched Free! recently and I enjoyed it a lot, much to my surprise. It's more drama than action, but the animation is pretty nice and the characters are adorable. Also, it's only 12 episodes so I finished it in 3 days.

And Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki is one of my favourite movies. It's a really beautiful, I especialy love the environments, and the soundtrack is amazing too!

- School Rumble
- Bleach
- Maria+Holic
- Steins;Gate
- Trigun
- Samurai Champloo
- Koukaku no Regios (Probably the ONLY one series I have marathoned 3 times)

If I dream of impossible, should I forget it?

I'm a BIG fan of Masaaki Yuasa's work. He's easily become my fave anime director. They're high-concept series with short running times, novel visual styles and wonderful music. Just listen to the premises to these-

MindGame- A nobody who dies shamefully by a gangster tricks God, cheats Death, and runs off to live life. Gorgeous insanity ensues. (This one's actually a movie.)

Tatami Galaxy- A college dropout relives his university days differently each episode, trying to find the perfect "rose-colored campus life". His actions have increasingly absurd consequences.

Kaiba- Two Tezuka-esque cuties try to find each other in a world where memories and bodies are interchangeable. Heartbreak ensues.

Kemonozume- A flesh-eating demon disguised as a human falls in llove with the samurai who's sworn to kill her. They elope, and dark comedy ensues.

Watch 'em all. Please.

I was going to say Tatami Galaxy but Zest beat me to it! I'll just add that Tatami Galaxy is probably definitely the best anime I've seen.

Did anybody say Wakfu? I don't know if it counts because it's french and sorta '4 kidz,' but it's really well animated and has a sweet villain!
