VCU 2013 Reboot: Round 1 - Gesture Drawing Challenge

VCU 2013 Reboot: Round 1 - Gesture Drawing Challenge

On to our first assignment!

Gesture Drawing

Quote
A gesture drawing is work of art defined by rapid execution. Typical situations involve an artist drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 30 seconds, or as long as 2 minutes. Gesture drawing is often performed as a warm-up for a life drawing session.

Gesture drawing is a great way to warm up, learn anatomy, proportion, and making your figures not as "stiff". The goal is to capture the feel, flow, or gesture of the figure in a short period of time.

Examples:

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs51/f/2009/334/a/8/Gesture_Drawing_by_cwhite02.jpg

http://mhsart2.wikispaces.com/file/view/gesture3.jpg/368812678/571x723/gesture3.jpg

You are NOT adding detail here. Don't add things like facial features or hair. Focus on the body. As you can see from the examples, you can draw several on one page. Remember that these aren't finished pieces so you don't need to worry about presentation. Just get them on the page.

Your assignment is to do 100 gesture drawings. Your goal is to complete them within a week, but there is no deadline.

Gesture drawings last about 30 seconds a piece, so this is less than an hour of drawing time over a period of a week. Easy!

Ideally, you should split these up over a a few days.

Online gesture drawing tools:

http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/
This site uses photos of real people. You can set it to "nude" or "decent" and even choose gender.

http://www.posemaniacs.com/thirtysecond
Posemaniacs offered computer rendered, highly muscled, skinless figures. What's great about this is that it comes up with some strange angles sometimes.

OR ask a friend to pose for you!

Good luck!

I hope that everyone includes you Pi! I'm totally getting in on this and I don't want to be the only one dropping terrible art in here.

Do you want us to submit our assignments all at once or can we post bits at a time? (I'm assuming one post per person to keep the thread tidy)

For this one, since its 100 small drawings, I think submitting in small chunks would be preferable. I'd rather have the thread active, than have it been one huge explosion of posts when the deadline hits, now that I think about it.

So yeah, if you'd like to post a chunk of like 25 drawings at a time, then please do!

I'll submit in chunks... 30 poses (if you count the potato)

I'll just post a link so it doesn't mess up the spacing.

Those are beautiful, underwoodwriter!

I'll join the bandwagon since I need practice myself. I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow.

Niiiiiice start so far, dudes! Keep it up ... most of you are 1/4 done :D

I really like the confident strokes in Underwood's drawings. Especially the first few he did on the right side. Everyone should be aiming for confident, strong lines that go down on the page like BAM you know that line belongs there! You can actually capture a gesture in very few lines, if you're confident enough about placing them.

Don't be afraid about messing up either, this is all practice and messing up is part of of the experience ;D

I used the photo generator site and decided to focus on nudes. Even though I chose both genders there were only about 5% male which was pretty weird. The majority of these are 30 seconds with a few towards the end being 60 seconds.

After doing this I thought I'd have a a go at making some actiony rockstar poses from my imagination as I've been told that my drawings are very 'stiff'. I think these look a bit more fluid but you guys will be better judges of that I guess...

I'm gonna try that other website now, and then I'll do some gesture drawings from life. Thanks.

Ok, just started the posemaiac thing up, and almost threw up when I saw that ridculous muscle abomination that sometimes pops up.

Does anyone know if there is any way of turning this monstrosity off? I want to draw REAL people, don't care if they're 3 foot, 45 stone fat, lanky, whatever, but I've never seen a human like that...

Or am I being a dick, is there supposed to be an advantage to drawing muscle dude?

Bahahaha!! I haven't use that site in a while, it's seems they added a new category called male (freak). I think there is also a random pose viewer where you can just hit a button for another random pose so you can easily skip the freak ones. I don't think there's an option to turn that off in the 30 second pose thing, unfortunately. I would just not draw them, that's too weird D:

What are you talking about, I think it's great practice because Void isn't comprised of just 'normal' shaped people 8D

Sorry, twenty poses, this is my first time and I'm pretty terrible at it but tomorrow I will do many more to make up for it.  I also need to draw smaller and not take up so much of the page.

No idea why you think you need to apologize dude haha, and yeah, it's pretty weird at first, but keep at it and it will get a lot easier!! These are totally fine, especially for a very first attempt.

I started these a little before this thread started.  I haven't really been counting just taking the best ones and throwing them together.

Adding 36 more bringing the total to 56.  Decided to add them as one super long image because why waste space?  I've also learned that not lifting up the pencil grants me a few more precious seconds.

Done. All gestures done in 60 seconds each (except for #43, which was accidentally drawn in 30 seconds without even noticing it).

Since I've had experience over the years using Poser and DAZ3D for anatomy and posing purposes, this shouldn't be much of a problem to me. However, I stopped drawing The Freak poses after #41 because they were too difficult for me to draw in under a minute.
