Fonts for Comics! And General Lettering Tips

Fonts for Comics! And General Lettering Tips

This isn't so much a tutorial, as it is a resource for good comic fonts. I'm asked what fonts are good for comics a lot, so I figure it would be good to just link them here, and allow people to share their favorites. This is for fonts that aren't included with Windows or Macs by default, we don't need to know where to download Arial or Times New Roman or Comic Sans or Courier New(and their Mac counterparts) since everyone should have them anyways.

First off, what I use

for the Dreams comic I used Gille's Comic Font http://www.dafont.com/gillescomic-handwriting.font for something that looked a little more hand written.

for all other comics I use Digital Strip, I like it a lot because it's fairly compact while still easy to read so it makes more text heavy comics easier to letter http://blambot.com/font_digitalstrip.shtml

Laffayette Comic Pro http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Laffayette-Comic-Pro
VTC Letterer Pro http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/VTC-Letterer-Pro
Year Supply of Fairy Cakes http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Year-supply-of-fairy-cakes
Crime Fighter http://www.blambot.com/font_crimefighter.shtml
Unmasked http://www.blambot.com/font_unmasked.shtml
Evil Genius http://www.blambot.com/font_evilgenius.shtml

And there's a lot more to choose from at http://blambot.com/fonts_dialogue.shtml they even have categories for sound effects as well.

And if any of you have programs or resources for either creating a font with your own handwriting or just doing your own hand lettering, let us know! Feel free to share any lettering tips either for digital or hand lettering with us.

A site of note for those of us who are more fiscally available, YourFonts allows you to take your handwriting and make a font out of it. It costs 9.95 (plus $5.00 if you upload both template pages) to download the templates and use it.

In general however, Blambot, DaFont, and Comicraft have plenty of fantastic free fonts and they also have some stellar purchasable fonts if you're so inclined.

Ultimately, you can pick any font you want to tell your story but it's for the best to pick one very attractive readable font.

i really like ACME Secret Agent from blambot, it's pretty fun and readable at a variety of sizes, and i think it goes with cartoons pretty well. also, i think it's paired great with Badaboom for sound effects.

If you're really dickish about fonts and have had training in using fonts and setting type, Dafont.com can cause problems. Some typefaces won't download, and some you have to kern and fix the allignment manually.

That pretty much goes for any site with huge ass databases that let all sorts of people submit all manners of the fonts they make. And at times, I've heard issues with the font-outta-writing services that have fucked kerning & tracking too. It happens, but even if so, it's not something that's impossible to work around if you like that typeface enough. It's why it's always good to sample what you get & mess with it until you find out what works best for you.

Glad this thread was started. No excuse for comic sans or handwriting from here on out.

Also helps when people might just wanna know what others use for comics. I've seen a few battles pop up recently where people asked what the artist used for their font.

One thing I learned was a pain in the ass is even with hand written fonts that were meant for use in comics, they can be a real bitch to make work.

http://www.1001fonts.com/index.html is a site I use to find some nice fonts

I have been using Anime Ace for most of my comics since coming to Void, but also Digitalstrip:
