HM, nice art, but the english was a bit difficult to understand. it also wasn't too clear that felix had become frozen on the sidewalk. since it's comics, something like that can be misinterpreted easily as just another freezeframe out of many that make up a comic. the plot also seemed a little odd, especially since felix didn't really feel like himself. JV, your lines are pretty cool, they just need to be supplemented with something to give them more pop. either vary the lineweight more, or tones/colors. also try using real panels and gutters instead of just dark solid lines, which end up drawing more attention than your artwork because of their weight (the same goes for the word bubbles). the punchline got a chuckle out of me; kudos to you.

monkey, nice colors. the line art seemed a little squiggly & josh is right about the star burst getting old quick. definitely look into getting someone to double check you on the english. it's great that you're putting forth the effort, but getting someone to give it a look over always helps. my biggest complaint was with the way you characterized your opponent's character. it was awfully weak. so what if they're only a scientist or whatever? it's your job to put some thought into them & be creative. and when your own character has such a flat affect, it's best to pay more attention to your opponent's character in order to get the point across. here, the role your opponent's character played in this was more of one dimensional punkass than scientist. pay more attention & give us well rounded characters instead of only worrying yourself with your own. speaking of which, your character reminds me of virgil from mighty max. j, not bad for a first go around either. the line work, while nice in clean was thin & sparse, making for a lot of empty white space. also the backgrounds, whether you were using linetool or not were feeling too perfect straight lines & even. don't be afraid to move the camera around more so we can see the same door from a different perspective. it's much more interesting than the same boring straight lines over & over & over again. the background's a character too. beyond that, you're already aware of the wordballoons pixelating all funny. there's some tutorials for that somewhere in the forum. but generally, you don't want the lines that much thicker than the panels or the text itself unless you have some really good reason for it. as cool as working digitally is, there's a lot that's way better to know traditionally than simply have the computers to rely on. don't get discouraged, keep doing what you're doing!

Monkey, loved your colors dude! overall the style is quite excellent. the "starburst" background got a little repetitive I don't mind the simple design-y BGs but you just used the same one too much. Also around pg. 5 the pacing got really weird and I started to get confused, did he slow down time maybe? anyway pretty but push the story like others said. J.V. Art did need something, some simple greyscale would add a lot. Otherwise, aside from the bubble pixelies and the soft/transparent parts of the blood, art looked good. Your dialogue was strong and the joke was pretty hilarious. Work on those art problems and keep it up.

Holy-Monkey-please stick around after the tourney, we'd love to have you! Loved the color scheme and character interaction here. I think the only thing that really bothered me was their reason for fighting seemed kind of forced. Like it seemed to be a bit much that the penguin would be gunning for him just for flipping him off. But of course this is Void so I suppose things like that happen. J.Vandermeer-same as the above, please stick around. You had some nice and clean lineart and the anatomy was overall good. But watch the pixelation on the word bubbles, I'm not sure how you made them but they could use some work. Also watch out for all the negative space! Try to at least imply a background in most of your panels or use some form of toning so everything isn't taking place in a big white void.

Holy - I really liked the colors and the art in this one. The dialogue was confusing and I didn't really get why Felix was so aggressive towards Kaniq. The part where Kaniq is walking across the road was cluttered and unclear in places, but overall I felt you communicated enough to get your point across. I enjoyed how oblivious the penguin seemed. Vandermeer - The art was clean but felt a very rushed, especially with the massive amounts of white space and nothing to place the characters on. However, the buildup rant to pulling out the glass shard was hilarious.

"... this is what 2-pixel borders..." I don't mean to say that GIMP failed in any way, only that I epic-failed GIMP.

Oh AUGH, I know. Aren't they awful? Check out my lack of a margin, and terrible gutters, too. This is why you should never leave the so-called "easy stuff" 'til the last day, because there are always problems. What happened here: I resized my work BEFORE I added in the speech bubbles. This is what 2-pixel thick borders on a circular selection look like, when you use GIMP. My black/white balance is made of crap, too, but that has nothing to do with my inability to use a computer. I think my next submissions to VOID will be entirely traditional.

J!! Please please please do something about those word balloons. The rest of the comic is fine but the word balloons are way too thick and pixelated. There is a thread about it in the Void university section of the forum if you need help. I will hopefully return with a more worthwhile critique later, but I wanted to make sure I pointed that out because bad lettering can take you right out of an otherwise solid comic.
