considering the turnaround on this was a week, i was impressed. shintsu, yours was ok, but a bit rushed overall. the art lost consistency at times. i liked jho's a bit better. jho, i don't know what it is, but i like your style the quicker you go haha this was good & despite not being my style of story, that last page made me involuntarily chuckle. but only for a half second haha -J

Thanks everyone for the crits! About the backgrounds and reuse of images: my goal for this comic was basically to see if I could ink and color within a week's time. So I'm alright with the end product for now but will work towards better backgrounds/color in the future. I'm glad people are warming up to Bob! I know I'm super lazy and haven't done too many battles here but I look forward to battling more people. Also, Jho thank you so much for letting me battle you! Here's to more comics with JJ and Bob!

thanks for the comments guys, very constructive and awesome! yeah I didnt finish mine and had to pack 2 pages in one for some pages, so it's not a good entry.it was experimental, doing the tones and the straight pencilling, I'm glad you guys took the time to crit. Shintsu I really liked the animation of your characters. Your style kind of reminds me of Scott Pilgrim (by Bryan Lee O'Malley check it out) I enjoyed the way you allowed the characters to relate to each other the dialogue felt real. Jingu I think your style is very interesting. It has a lot of energy and inventiveness although at times its a bit hard to read. this could easily be fixed by allowing some panels to not be as crazy as others give the viewer a chance to rest their eyes. As for the stories of both I have to agree wholeheartedly with michaelharris...I spent the whole time reading both of your stories waiting for something to happen. I had a few moments where I laughed and I felt that the story was about to do SOMETHING ANYTHING...then it went right back to a lot of nothing...I think both of you are good writers and construct believable dialogue. I would hope in the future you include something for all readers

shintsu, I like your expressive characters, the minimal backgrounds kind of annoyed me though. Jingu, I really like your style although there are a lot of times when it gets a little messy and hard to read. I felt it got a little too sketchy at times. both, yeah, I couldn't really get into either story. They both are reminiscent of all the \"girly\" (for lack of a better word) relationship anime/manga that I avoid. Everyone else seemed to enjoy them so it may just be a genre thing but I would try to include something that people who aren't fans of this genre might enjoy.

Shintsu-I'm still really not sure how I feel about your work colored. I do think it's great to try new things, but try doing a little more with the color on the next battle, I still think a style that's more expressive would compliment your lineart well. Gradients rarely look good unless they're a barely noticeable gradient overlay so try to stay away from doing that, especially in large areas of color. Story wise this was adorable and you had some nice character interaction going on. I honestly have never been that interested in Bob, but you're finding ways of getting me curious which is great. I look forward to where Bob's path takes him next. Jho-your characters were very strong throughout this but I felt like your backgrounds could use a little work. Since this was such a character focused battle it does work as is, but it never hurts to bring the background up the level of the foreground. I think you could bear to vary up the toning a little more so the characters stand out more from the backgrounds. But other than that art wise it was looking really good. I always enjoy your stories and this comic was no different. While I know this wasn't finished, what you had felt as though it was finished. I hope you intend on uploading the rest as a BB sometime since this was such a fun story.

Shintsu: i liked this! The story was good and it was nice to see Bob's past. You mangaged to make the whole comic mostly dialouge without making it boring and it kept my attention. btw, the dialouge ran smoothly for me and I had no pauses in between =] it had a nice pace. I was really able to tell how J.J was feeling and how frustrated Bob was. That's a plus~ Your lines are ok and you DO manage to suggest figures with a few lines, and I think that's ok to do ( i like how you do it, but i'm not sure how others would see it. ) Thought i think you should try a little more on the backgrounds. Your character figures look fine, but i just know that some backgrounds would make them look better, and overall, make the whole comic a bit better. I like the expressions though. This battle was really cute and i felt like going \"aawwwww\" at the end. I love Bob's last few lines~ Jho: oh shit. you're style-it's crazy! XD I don't know how you manage, with all those screen tones, to make it not confusing. Even with that sketchy style, it still looks clean and done! I hella like your expressions. Ecspecially the ones J.J makes~ I can just tell what she's feeling by them. Backgrounds were good, but most of the time the panels felt kinda crowded. Maybe you should try zooming out a little more often. The story was good, i didn't wander. \"...I'll give you..THIS.\" XD i loved that part! It was really cute too and i wish you could have finished ;_; even if it wasn't finished, it didn't feel like it ended that randomly. So you're good right there. Can't wait to see more from you! ouo

bob is such a playa

I can completely relate to Jess' comment—but I’m not getting into that right yet. Shin: Nice use of color. Not particularly a fan of gradients, but at the same time, I don’t find them particularly distracting given the simplicity of your drawings—deliberate stroke, and fill of color. Your pacing worked well, and I could easily follow along with the sequence of events. What concerns me is repeat figures in numbers of panels--as in page one, with Girl and Bob jogging together. I do understand the context, and it's fitting, and it is something I will overlook for this comic. But I don't want it to become a habit. I want to see you try reworking the figures each and every time, instead of cascading them and rearranging them. About the backgrounds...at times nonexistent, and I could understand the reasoning for it: not to distract from the foreground/main figures. But I'd like to see a little more. Draw us into the environment; don't exclude us--or the figures/characters--from it. Don't get me wrong--your style is positively functional, and it's always fun to look at, but I would LIKE to see you push yourself. Just a LITTLE more. BUT it's ultimately up to you, so as always, you can take it or leave it. The story is cute. It's VERY cute. Background history of Bob surrounded by girls, distracted by Julius in the present, while giving the reader the opportunity to see JJ's reflective/anxious side. You did a great job providing that poetic, fairy-tale happily ever after side of this confrontation. All in all, you rose to the challenge, and you delivered nicely. Jho: You are one of the very, very, VERY few people who produces work with a \"sketchy style\" that positively works. Your backgrounds are consistent, varied, though very simplistic in an outline+tone sort of way, and I felt that the times you included no background (page four) it was FOR a purpose. I think the point would have been muddled with a few lines indicating room structure, or screentones. The expressions you use for the characters are brilliant. Returning back to page four, the \"OooOonh” panel? Yeah—you GOT it. I know you had a helluva time working with this. But, I will be fussy, and demand a little more from you (because your colored, refined work is the shizz). And this is where I can return to Jess’ comment… JJ’s side WAS realistic. The dialogue was extremely natural. It is hard to explain, but I definitely CAN relate to it—because life isn’t scripted, and it never works out like in the fairy tales; it’s not that EASY, or CONVENIENT. I would give my two cents regarding love, the human psyche, the distortion of self-images, and retrospect—but I’ve already said way too much, as per usual, and I really just want Jho to finish this up, and tell us how it all ends. I think it's very amusing that it turned out that you two displayed a romance story from OPPOSITE ends of the spectrum. That's what I liked about this match-up the most. A job well done, both of you.

I am also impressed and jealous that you both did a good amount of pages in a week, with the quality still being good. shintsuu I think the only real thing that I can point out is the backgrounds, because a lot of the time there is nothing/not a lot. and I'm not sure how I feel about the gradients, but I think that part is okay. I liked seeing into bob's past though, and his relationships with ladies and julius and stuff. fun times, and I hope you keep up the comics! jhos aww that was so cute at the end haha ; 3; and I guess you didn't finish, so that would explain the blank bubbles? honestly it didn't take much away though, and it ended pretty well right there. I am curious about the rest now though. space duck and metro were fun too, hooray for jho comics!

As a heads up guys, make sure your pages aren't insanely large in the future. Apparently part of the problem is several of Shintsu's pages were 1MB+ which is pretty crazy for online viewing. Remember that you can safely save at medium quality without much if any compression issues. Don't nobody be needing 1MB+ file sizes for battles The battle's down until Toast can fix the problem
