Jelly: Loved your texture work and sense of scale present throughout this comic! The splashes of red were so visually striking as well, especially when used with such scratchy lines!
Gig: Absolutely TRAGIC that your files got corrupted right towards the end </3 I admire your dedication to try and recreate as much of what you had before as you could!
I’ve been looking forward to sharing my thoughts on this for a while, and now that I have the time to sit down with it, I wanted to reach out.
Jelly, your work has been a constant source of motivation for me and after seeing your style in Round 1 and browsing your work on the site I gotta say, the sheer quality of your art has really pushed me to stay dedicated to my own progress.
The gritty, solid lineart is, always has been, incredible especially in action sequences. You capture the weight of impact and intensity in every panel so effectively such as perfect conclusion with the beam clash. A reflection to Zalice’s unbridled growth when pushed into limit out of sheer survival against Gorog’s aggression. I loved the contrast in pacing here, moving from the whimsical 'cat and mouse' dynamic with Sam to this direct, brutal confrontation with the manmade monstrosity. Letting Gorog have the chance regenerate was a great touch of sportsmanship! but leaving Zalice in that nearly lost aggressive state made it a fantastic cliffhanger which nicely follows up in the next round.
Every hit in this round were masterfully done! I especially appreciated the narrative contrast between the whimsical chase in Round 1 and the raw power displayed against Gorog.
As for my dear friend Gig, you may have faced some major technical setbacks with the programs crashing but as your friend I’m still proud of what you managed to put out. It was a tough round but I hope you're not discouraged man, the effort was definitely there! comic-making process is definitely a big challenge but I hope you keep at it. It was a great effort from both sides!
Would love to see this finished! It has potential.
Damn, I'm so sorry your program crashed on you! I hope you don't give up and we get to see more art from you!
Additional note for Gig: It's not an uncommon practice to take an incomplete comic and finish it in a Beyond Battle, it is a good practice to train yourself to see your projects through to the end aside from all the other benefits of just drawing more
@JellyRaptor
Far and away an improvement from the last entry on every respect, it is even so cleaned up it's nearing pro standard and at this point there's very little I can tell you; you're on the cusp of your next level, I can feel it. Like with Snowy, I'll give some more in-the-weeds notes for polish: Word balloons and sound effects are fair enough, but they do stand out as digital next to the more organic traditional look you have with everything else. This could be a time thing, but something to think about for future battles. One other thing I noticed is while the compositions are great, there are times where it gets a little crowded and tight in the panels (seems more likely in a kaiju action sequence given the absolute mass onscreen). I would recommended adding a wide shot every other page or so in a fight like this to help reorient the reader from the closeups
@Gig
Don't be discouraged; if you'd like, you can take a crack at a beyond battle like what TinnBiscuits had done to set a comic drawing deadline to a forgivable speed and see how far you can get with that. Hope to see more in the future
I'm sorry you lost so much of your work, it's always devastating to see that happen. I'm glad you were able to turn in something though, it was a really interesting story from what I could see! I hope you continue to make and upload comics to the site, I'd love to see more. :)
Very unfortunate that you lost all your progress last-minute. Based on what you have here, though, I think you have something great going. Your sketch work and motion is strong, and I hope you get the chance to make a finished comic in the future!
Sad to hear you had file troubles, Gig. I truly feel for you. What you were able to accomplish is a good framework and I can see what you had in mind. You did your best and your best was great!
To both of you this was truly an amazing and beautiful read and a great experience to learn from the both of you!!!
I can relate to jumping into lots of troubles when making comics. Good on you for pulling through. This shit can be arduous on the soul.
Im so, so, so sorry your files corrupted on you, gig. :(
In what time you had left I could see the vision you had for this, it's a great improvement, especially with more panel structuring and shading. I hope to see more comics from you in the future, im looking forward to them!
I think most of us have been there before, the soul crushing realization that your file is gone. I'm very sorry that circumstance dealt you a shitty hand, but I really appreciate you doing what you can and uploading regardless. For what its worth, what you do have on display has really piqued my interest and I hope I might get to see the full comic someday! Thank you for the battle, I loved working with Rog.
Agreed with Rose, bet this one will be fun, specially since GOROG has no arms hahaha
Interesting matchup! Looking forward to some interesting stuff from both of you!
