It occurs to me that I never got around to showing you this pic I threw together for you Slack: http://www.deviantart.com/view/15797180/
It's not much, but I wanted to do something to make up for the lousiness of the way I did your character.
i like both these character concepts. a city full of superpowered fighters and you got two hardluck cases riding the storm along with them
nfn - i saw your previous battle and it looks like you're making leaps and bounds from your other anime-ish style. aces on that. i like your story for this battle. instead of trying to overpower an obviously stronger fighter you made it a learning thing. (which i'm sure slacks cool demenaor helped in the story) i think a lil bit of tigher linework will do wonders for you quality score. good job nonetheless and lookin to see more
slack - i like the continuity between your fights. i think your fight sequence was a bit strained but it had a hint of comedy to it that seemed to fit these two well. i also like the clifhangerish hook that finished the story but left you waiting for the next slack story. good work.
i say you guys exchange aim/msn usernames or emails phone numbers or whatever the hell ppl use to communicate with
BUT GOOD FIGHT FROM BOTH OF YA!
*thumbs up*
Slack> Thanks alot man... it's been great fighting you. I LOVED the humour in your story and you captured NFN rather well (when he's being a dick like I usually am). I'm curious about that 8-Ball now and look foward to seeing where it's going. Thanks alot for the battle man.
Wolfe: That was absolute gold, and I think you've got Slack pretty much right down the middle--at least, when you're not catching him on a bad day.
Lune: you're right about the contrast--I drew this with the intention to add tones and then just didn't quite have the time. I'll be trying something different in my next battle, though...
Pi: Yeah, action's definitely my weakest point. I think part of the problem is that I keep wanting to tell a story rather than have a fight, and I'm not quite sure how to reconcile the two--at least not without a panel count that's 4 or 5 times as large as what I'm working with. I'm going to keep trying, though. Hopefully, sooner or later, I'll get it, or at least make measurable progress.
Wolfe..hmm...your work intrigues me for some reason. I keep finding myself wanting to see more of your fights. WTF. *ah hem* I won't get ahead of myself. Anyhow, Nice fight you two. I would like to see more contrast in both of your pages, more depth!!
I appreciate it ALOT Pi. Ironically page 2 looks the most anime-ish to me. But... I hate to sound stupid, but I'm not ditching the anime look really. Trying new things yeah... but I'm most comfortable and I feel better when I do a cartoonier look. I'll switch up my styles here and there though cause I believe I need to try new things and I actually get sick of the manga look from time to time. Really though Pi, I appreciate all the nice things you said there. I'll do my best to make my stuff entertaining.
Cool battle from the two of you guys.
Joe: you're battle was cool, but for some reason I don't feel it in your action sequences. When I read a good action sequence, it gets me all pumped up and my heart starts racing and all that good adrenaline stuff. But when I read yours, it was more of a \"meh\" vibe. Maybe it's a lack of background or action lines or something, but I think that's your weakest point. Your script is awesome as always, but the last page had me going \"wtf?\" Hope you explain that later.
Wolfe: You got some major confidence issues, dude. Your stuff is wicked, especially now that you've gotten off the anime feel. Your second page was gold. Still, it looks like you forgot to ink some panels, but it came through alright. My vote goes to you.
's OK. I probably didn't give NFN enough credit either, which sort of nagged at me (but not enough to change the script :) ) . It'll still be fun to read.
All done and uploaded! This one didn't turn out near as well as I'd hoped though. I don't feel like I did Slack justice in this Joe, and for that I apologize. Next time we fight I'll try to make up for this.
Yeah I hear ya. Personally I've always though raw lineart looks better than tones anyways. Tones always struck me as cover ups. I hated in manga when stuff would go from crisp, hard lines, to overly shaded forms. But I appreciate the favour you're doing me by leveling the field to a purely line art competition. Best of luck to you as well. I'll upload mine before the deadline, since I have some dialogue issues to conclude.
Appreciate it. In that case, I'll submit my fight as is and wish you a hearty \"good luck\" --because one page of tones and 3 pages of lineart won't look as good as 4 pages of lineart, in my opinion.
Well you've got more serious issuess to contend with right now anyways. Don't worry about the toning, I'm not having any on mine this time around either so it's no big deal.
Your friends have my well wishes also (like that makes any real difference...).
They'll both probably be alright--at least, that's what I keep telling myself.
In lighter news, I finished lettering my fight tonight. Chances are slim that I'll be able to tone all four pages in the tim I've got, but I'll at least try to get page one done.
Good lord... I hope the second listed fellow is alright... maybe things will turn around and he'll get to stay in the US... or at least be posted somewhere outside of the hot zones. On the other hand, I'm glad you've been able to enjoy the time you've spent with your first listed friend. And you're not old XD
Nah, it's a celebration in earnest. We've been playing role-playing games every night for the last four days till the wee hours. He's an oldie like me (32) so he's entering the army as a \"specialist\". He'll probably end up an airborne copy repairman or something. I'm more worried about the other friend who is in the process of shipping to Iraq.
And that's how I spent my first week :)
My pages are drawn and inked, I might even get tones on them. My friend leaves for Boot camp Wednesday, though, we'll see how the farewell celebration affects me.
I'd just like to say that I think I've drawn more background in the first two pages of this fight than I have up to this point. Thank you. Leaving now.
Yess, this gives me time to do the Beyond Battle I was going to do before i went an challenged Lysol. Rock on you two and Wolfie stop being so modest! xp
I know that, it's just wierd. My brain usually doesn't go into overdrive like this until about 3 days before deadline. I think it's because I worked out how many days per page I had after scripting.
AAARGH! Comic EATING my BRAIN!!! It's been what, one day, two days, and I've already been reprimanded once for obsessing over the battle at \"work\". My brain's already acting like I have 2 days till deadline!
On the bright side, page 1 is inked.
The kid added on to that scene too. I wish I had been around when that went up so I coulda voted for ya. Caeser's was good artwise, but I think you really had him just on sheer dialogue. All of your matches have been like that really. I hope mine doesn't suck too much compared to how yours will turn out.
Heh, I appreciate your kind words. I'm happy to be fighting someone with such good narrative skills. You really do put together good scripts. I especially like the fight with Caeser where the joke about Slack being left handed comes up.
...Look at the difference between those two scores and ask again who's doing the ripping. :) The honor is mine.
But at least I already have two pages thumbnailed.
