I'm no big fan of Joss Whedon, but i've had a friend (who IS a big fan) tell me of a Buffy episode once where she wakes up in a mental institute and that Vampires are all a figment of her imagination. I havent seen the episode myself. Definitely very similar!

Hmm this is my first other battle I've reviewed other than my friends but I must say I'm really impressed.

Ok, so 2 fighters today. One plant lady and one hot chic. Lotus is coming from Kill Bill territory which is already the biggest crime ever committed (it's not original material so don't try to mimic it because it doesn't help) Lotus' quality is eh, not too bad but unfortunately, the lack of creativity as well as ok quality doesn't make up for a breath-taking piece. I know it's hard to get a certain standard but well, we all have to start from somewhere.

Mrs Robinson. WHOA. That's some truly AMAZING stuff! I love the coloring! It's like some semi cell shaded realist thing! Great! And the overall concept that Robinson is really a pimply chic in the real world and that the VOID world is really just 'a dream'. Which is, in a way, quite true. And who wouldn't love Mrs Robinson? She's beautiful, kick ass and hot.

Sorry Lotus, this one goes to Robinson hands down.

qtr - welcome to Void.  I won't beat you over the head with crits (YET!)...just keep improving and its all good.  Add some more backgrounds (at least 1 per page at a minimum) and you'll be a contender.
fanta - DAMN!  Fabulous story - I loved it.  You're art is good, but you're writing is AMAZING.  Class A fight.

I think everyone's said enough about your pages.  My vote would have to go to Robinson for the said reasons above.

Yeah, i was meant to put more little details like that. eg. a jar of "ORANGE MARMALADE" or a bottle labeled "DRINK ME"
The last page and ending was compromised coz of time too. I was meant 2 explain how Lotus was controlled hypnotically by the evil doctor, which reminds Rob her hypnotism "nightmare" of the real world. And also Rob realising a little how preposterous things are in Void City eg. hynotizing a flower!! Which is great coz it can justify EVERYTHING that happens in Void (no matter how weird or exaggerated)... coz it's all a dream!

My favorite line: "You don't speak English do you?" HAHAHA it's trully such a smart-ass line Mrs. Rob would say!! And the "How does it feel to be a flower..." line echo's Edgar's (the villain from the first "Men In Black" movie, played wonderfully by Vincent D'onofrio!) "Ever pulled the wings off a fly? Wanna see a fly get even?" line. Great stuff!
LOL yeah it seemed we had the same thing goin on there at the start - the "gardener" and "tree-hugger" lines and even the traveller appearances! Even the panel with the blurred Lotus in the bg and the approaching vine in the foreground (the image used as thumbnail for ur page 3) was similar to the last panel on my first page! Uncanny!!
To think i wasn't going to color my pages! Even my girlfriend said not to color it coz i wouldn't hav enough time (wit 22hours left for deadline i was still inking my first page!!!)!! Instead i chose to lose sleep... a whole night of it! The impact of wat coloring does to a battle is weird. i admit it gives you a biased advantage. Kinda like when on a packed train or a bus a guy would only give his seat to a pretty girl and never to a fat chick. Eye candy first.
But i ALWAYS work from an idea FIRST! Story before art. Substance over style. In my design course it's always about CONCEPT!! And i combine that with my love for Literature and i'll always try and go for character & story-driven battles.
Remember, it's not always about art. You've got an awesome character there QTR! Very deep & involving, HEAPS of creative possibilities! And already has a growing fan club!!! Don't feel discouraged... i felt this way too when i lost to Sketch (Marbell Denamiliss). But if anything it should make you strive harder! Winning is not the best prize... IMPROVEMENT is!! I'm heaps looking forward to your fight with Traveller!! Coz Lotus and Trav are honestly the most original, freshest and interesting characters here on Void! My two fav! Why? Coz they're backed by great ideas!

.....its kinda tricky with a character whos attacks are mainly....ranged... and it was more of robinson just showing off rather than being an actull batttle but i understand what your getting at....... unfortunatly i may end up flaking out of my battle with traveler cause im kinda fustrated with my style presently.  i dont really want to... but i dont want to deliver this agian.    ........ gaaaaay lets just worship fanta instead of criticing me, ok?  i'll feel better.    ....... my favorite part is when robinson keeps waking, like jakob's latter stuff...

Meh, I'm not saying everyone has to stick to the same format. Just... well, like you said, standard. There can be different styles and methods of approaching a comic. It would be fine if this was a mere battle of words, but they're fighting - hand to hand COMBAT. you don't see Spiderman facing off Doc Oct in the same drawn out shot all the time. Same thing applies to comics. Dynamic staging is needed for battling.

Still, it's pretty good for a first try, I look forward to seeing your next battle. =D

sigh thanks for the critic... i just wasnt aware there was a comic standard to applease everyone... i mean.  not everyone follows the same format... but i have alot to learn..

Lotus: Cool character designs and wicked way of killing off other fighters, but really, try to arrange your compositions. Everything is just straight face-on value, from a single perspective point; there is no foreground or midground, and all your panels are long shots. Consider adding a little variation to your stuff, like close-ups for the important/dramatic bits. and add a BACKGROUND. Blank space equals "where the hell is this?"

Also, since we're going on about composition here: most of your panels have waaay too much blank space. I understand that in certain times blank spaces can create a great effect, but try not to overdo it. Remember that you're doing a comic, and NOT individual images. Also, put bubbles around your text. Other than that, nothing much left to say for this one.

Mrs. Robinson: ...damn but your glowing CG effects are cool.

I think what I liked most about this would be the storyline. The Alice quotes were quite effective. and the part about Void City's "ill-dressed horned time travellers and funky afro-headed robots" made me chuckle. Interesting backstory about how the real Mrs.Rob looks like. Kinda like the Matrix. XD

Your side of the battle was good, but I do think it could have been better if you had added a sense of perspective to it. You have foreground and midground and backgrounds, cool; just spice it up a bit with objects that seem like they're coming towards the viewer, or panels being viewed from above., below, whatever fits. It could make a panel seem dramatic, for example, the last page where she stabs the guy with his own needle. Drawing the guy's head right smack in the foreground with Mrs. R standing behind, holding the needle, migth eb more impactful than a normal head-on shot.

Still, overall your side was pretty impressive. So... yeah.

i've got 22hours left and i'm still inking the first (of four) page!!! Pencils & layouts took me WAY longer than i expected!!

i dunno from what i'm seeing from "fan-art" done of lotus in the forums, poeple seem to get her character more than i do... so i might have short changed a good story this time.... but its my first fight and its harder than i thought coming up with reasons why two strangers would fight.... without repeating someone else's idea.  ... if fanta does more than 4 pages or colors, it's pretty much over for me....  its ok... i'll learn... x_X

this will be SO EXCITING. i don't know WHO I THINK WILL WIN.

Sorry. I just got back from overseas! Didn't have access to Internet. i only once popped into a 'Net cafe where i was able to accept this battle.
I was able to completely script my story while i was overseas... now i just gotta draw it.
I'm so tempted to ask for an extension... but never hav i yielded to it before. And im not gonna start now either. Not fair to you QTR.

"default" is when the other person doesn't submit any art at all... hence the "default" win. It's annoying coz generally people don't wanna read - or vote - for one-sided defaulted battles.
Yeah, Lotus definitely reminded me of the Alice video game! Coz i remember she transforms into plant state as well!
As for the panelling and page size, try workin in sections. Like working on 2 or 3 canvases to make one page... u just stitch together afterwards.
Win or lose, improvement is always the best prize!! I'm honored to be, uh, ur first(?!)

default? what do you mean?  and i LOVE alice in wonderland shit (paticularly the alice in pshycoland pc game)...  im kinda nervous though cause this is my first and i'm still trying to get the hang of this panel format... i work entirly on my pc with a mouse tablet, so that means smaller scale, but without a scanner i can't do it normally.  anyway win or lose, i just want to improve, and have fun.. hope you do too... :p just dont throw a shoe at me.
