Thanks for letting me be part of this experience! It started out really rough for me between being unable to finish my match against Fern, having serious mental health issues come up, and then feeling uninspired for this comic. Once this idea hit me, though, it all changed and I started to get really excited for it. I was worried that people would bash me for not making enough of the comic feel like it was happening within the D&D game, and I hope I didn't upset anyone with my severely unorthodox approach, but I just had to go with the inspiration that got me moving again. Thanks so much to everyone who read, enjoyed, commented on, and even shared my comic. I really enjoyed everyone else's comics, and am so happy to have come out victorious (somehow)! Thanks for the great experience, guys, and keep up the good work! Never stop drawing! <3

Hi, just new here and I don't feel qualified to crit your work in what's obviously a close Void family, I just want to say there's some sterling work here. Otakutaylor, some breathtaking work in your strip, I thought you encapsulated the danger and fun of a game night mixed with some tight art.

Nibbles, the art was evocative of many fantasy illustrations and and invoked a sense of grand adventure. Page 3 really stuck out for this.

Bobo, role playing meets existentialist angst. As a philosophy grad I appreciated that. I felt that some of the unfinished panels didn't detract all that much from the dream-like theme of the strip.

Really great work by all, look forward to seeing more!

While it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one who had some troubles getting their comic finished for game night, It certainly isn't stopping me from feeling disappointed in my showing. And rightly so. The comic I managed to post really is only the intro for what I'd planned, and rather enjoyed writing. In fact the first week I spent plotting and planning, and put extra effort into figuring out exactly what character each player would have designed and what plot points would revolve around them. I was super nervous, yet extra excited, to see how everyone handled drawing each others characters, and what choices they'd make. Once it got to drawing, however... I tripped at the beginning with that first stairs scene and killed what motivation and drive I had for much of the remaining time. Having taken so long to get back into drawing, then having a 5 week deadline was a bit to much of a shift from park to high gear. None of that excuses my performance, But I'm glad at least I got done what I've got and that I got to enjoy everyone elses comics as well. (and hopefully Dino's eventually~)

I've definitely got to stick to shorter deadlines or start a proper study schedule to get back into the swing of things, as even the anatomy I used to be passable at has deteriorated, but at least this is an important step. Even if it isn't a very good one.

On to critiques~

Bobo: Obviously a pretty dang bold choice, hehe. Having such character within character moments portrayed was an impressive take. It's a bummer the drawn parts of the comic are little more than storyboarding, but believe me, I know what it's like when your own mind fights against you in trying to get art done. The 5-ish months before this even where I drew literally nothing are testament to that. Praise Helix.

Umbrella: I really enjoyed this portrayal of how a game feels to play, compared to what it'd really look like were it happening.  While still a bit sketchy, your characters maintained a lot of form and shape, which is impressive to do at any level.

Nibbles: A really great example of how wondrous and crazy DnD can get. We all seemed to run out of time for the environment, but the work you did in conveying the sense of the realm in their past adventures and the current one still makes a huge difference. It's easy to forget the background in favor of the moving pieces.

Thresher: Mua ha hah ha ha~ Just plain enjoyed watching Tsumi be the dickrogue, and the lovable take the party had on chasing her down. I can't say much, but do watch your word bubbles, keeping them inside the panels that they come from prevent them from flattening some of the sense of depth. Especially if they tangent with the panel borders.

Dino: Here's to hoping we can see your side some day!

Maybe when voting is over, i'll share some of the design sketchwork I had, since that's about the only part of mine I was proud of in this event.  Thanks for the comments and critiques guys, even if it's so hard to help with something unfinished.

Bobo was right, I DID end up cutting much out of my plot.  I guess I should do a BB too.  If I had my way entirely my comic would've been 15 pages and in full glorious watercolor.

Just checking in to say I'm fine, sorry to worry anyone, and thanks for being concerned.  You guys are awesome, and super huge apologies for the no-show on this.  Life's gettin heavy, and I wasn't able to take advantage of the initial deadline or the extension the way I wanted to.

I've learned a lesson here, as well.  I just don't trust myself enough.  I spent this deadline shooting down my own ideas, and I should have just drawn one.  So believe that I will be submitting my side of this thing as a Beyond Battle, even if it's not till after Monster Mash.  I owe you guys that.

Anyway, as a symptom of my busy week, my computer is currently without an internet connection, and I'm on my iPad with a spotty wifi signal for now.  So for whatever reason, Bobo's comic isn't wanting to load completely, so it's all pixelated and impossible to read.  It looks glorious though, and I'm totally talking about dat ass.

Everyone else's comics load fine (my tablet's probably just taking issue with the single enormous page in Bobo's), and they were a joy to read.  My favorite thing about each one:  UmbrellaFrog- Making Smile the villain; Nibbles- Capturing the feel of a real D&D campaign; OtakuTaylor- Really creative character designs, and great team synergy; Thresher- great table talk, and you've given me a new understanding and appreciation of my own character.  Bobo- the nudes.  (I'll have to actually read it when I can get the image to load into focus).

PS—@Nibbles: just be sure to very carefully read the wall of pink text and consider every point of philosophy contained in those words. Then you shall find the truth, and the truth will set you free.

No wait, I got that backwards. DO NOT READ THE WALL OF PINK TEXT. I repeat, DO NOT READ THE WALL OF PINK TEXT. IT WILL LEAD DIRECTLY TO INSANITY IF YOU ALLOW THOSE WORDS TO ENTER YOUR BRAIN.

DO NOT READ THE WALL OF PINK TEXT.

Madness, you say? We're all mad here, m'dear!

I just read through everyone else's comics, and while I hope Dino's okay, everyone else did a great job! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who ran into real life issues and time constraints, etc. etc., but I'm glad everyone managed to get a complete and entertaining story done either way.

UmbrellaFrog: I really enjoyed the raw movement and action in your comic. Everything felt really dynamic to me, even when the characters involved were stationary. There was a lot of joy and excitement in your story, and I love the way you brought out the characters in such a concise comic!

Nibbles: Story-wise, I think I found your comic the most engaging. I'm sad that it had to end kind of abruptly, but I think you did a great job of establishing the experience of basically a large section of a D&D campaign in such a short number of pages. I love how you drew everything, from the characters to the fantastic backgrounds, and how you managed to balance humor, suspense, and action very cleanly. I suspect you had a longer comic in mind, and you obviously already realize the need to scale back a bit. I think you managed to get enough of the story in there for it to feel like a complete comic, though, even though it's a cliffhanger and I wish I could see more of it :)

Taylor: Mega points for quality on your comic. I'm sorry you didn't get to color it more, and the random splashes of color felt a little out of place for the most part, but the lineart itself was beautiful. I love the way you drew both the players and their characters and really integrated what's happening both outside and inside the game. It was fun to see you present the characters with an especially tricky challenge and show how they worked together to achieve victory. Thanks for an awesome game! :D

Thresher: I like how you took The Smile in a completely different direction from what everyone was expecting. He's so adorable and I just want to hug him. I feel like the kobold thing might have been an inside joke that I was missing, but I still enjoyed that interaction with Eighty-eight. The betrayal thing was really fun, and the whole thing just had such a fun vibe of friendship that made my heart warm.

Thanks again for the battle, everyone! I enjoyed everyone's work, even though none of us seemed to be able to finish 100%. Good luck! And I had lots of fun seeing how each of you would draw Ancelin in both human and minotaur form. Really creative and fun interpretations all around! :)

Uploaded.  Last two pages aren't as nice as they should be, but my pen croaked at the same time my wrist said 'fuck you'. (My pens also hated this paper.  Strathmore Bristol has really gone downhill, but I reckon that's not news to you guys.)

When I signed up for this I thought, "Oh! The kids are going back to school--I'm going to have sooo much time!"  Ha ha, not.  I don't know why I thought that, 'cause in hindsight it's obvious, but I guess I was living in fairy land.
