Art wise, the texture really takes over, you do a lot of thin, delicate linework that gets swallowed up by it. I still want you to throw some gutters in there as well.

Storywise, Soooo... throughout the beginning of the story I kept hearing the song "Faggot" by MSI, then at the end it was "Sex on fire" by Kings of Leon. I think everything has been covered. *backs away slowly*

Hahahaha I was worried about that coming up, but to further my own point, check out what those two are wearing. Do they look poor to you?

Hmm...Sorry I'm gonna say...there's some things right about what people are saying and there are...some incorrect things people are saying.  Hmm how shall I start this.  Well...  there are books on the subject.  Probably a really obvious one that deals with the subject matter is a book called "Homophobia: A History".  And so using said book as reference...Jack is only partly right.  People like the Marquis De Sade (the man himself is another subject) are elites.  And so elites have been able to do what they damn well please for...well forever.  But if we're talking about the 18th century...places like France and Russia had the death penalty in place during those time periods.  They were actually abolished at the end of the 18th/beginning of 19th century period.  Italy and Spain and several other countries eased up considerably and they took the part out of the law that basically said, you could be condemned as a sodomite if you did it in private.  So basically as long as no one really knew, you were a okay to fuck as you please.  England was actually the last country to ease up on sentencing homosexuality as a crime.   and even then that's pretty recent.  The Marquis De Sade actually had a role to play because he advocated homosexuality and he was pretty much in a position to do so. Oscar wilde is another good name to throw around because he went to trial and defended his homosexuality/bisexuality in court.  But he was pretty much a celebrity and as we should all know, celebrities don't always go to jail.  I could go on but I don't want to make a long history lesson here.  There are books on the subject, I named one, you can read about it.

And while stoning was more prevalent in middle eastern countries and in practice more recent times, the more common practice was to throw animal guts at convicted offenders.

Ah really, people should keep in mind that despite the prevalent attitude that is obvious today, really homosexuals have it better off nowadays and in the Western world than really any other time or place.  Come on, gay pride parades?  You really think those would have been kosher back in the day?

Sorry for the long lecture.

"I'm going to assume the era is Dickensian..."

Despite it looking like early 18th Century France, sure. You can assume it takes place in a time period (Victorian, by the way. Dickensian is really just a literary style which isn't really present here) it in no way resembles.

"Homophobia didn't just die off for a time.. o.O everyone was simply hush-hush about it, like domestic abuse and adolescent molestation. Things like this could still happen."

And this is the biggest problem I have. I'll repeat, homophobia is a fairly recent idea. Things like this could happen NOW. They wouldn't have happened THEN.  The Marquis De Sade wasn't burned alive and look at the shit he pulled. You're taking a time when, really, people weren't having all that much sex to begin with, when ladies would just defecate while walking around because of the difficulty of putting on and removing their dresses, which really only came off once or twice a year.  Shit like "becuase back then it was definitely god king and country. " is infuriatingly ignorant because it supposes that because we are us now we must be wiser than they were then. They just didn't care. That's the long and short of it. If you want to cast these townspeople as Vehmics that managed to not die off for 2 Centuries or Puritans who missed the boat, whatever, but don't assume that just because there's hate now that there's always been hate.

"The way I took it was that they already knew each other. Why would they, complete strangers, just kiss in public?? They had to have known each other already."

So I take this as almost a narrative message... not so much as a story. What ever message you are sending out should be more fleshed out. It's just a quick Remeo and Juliet, with Guys cliffnotes sort of thing. The only thing that really creeped me out is that the two males looked almost related, try and distinguish your characters more. And I kind of disagree a bit with people saying that this might not be the time for this... awareness should be at all time. Of course if this was a man and a woman people would have said WTF why are people chasing them... so if you are going to establish the times with your message show more of the political and religious climate.... becuase back then it was definitely god king and country.

LOL@Fowlie

I SO would not be making love in a fire. No matter how randy I was.

As a beyond battle, even if it was rushed for the holidays, I think this could've had a lot more time spent on it. I find that the textures are just covering things up. I come to that conclusion because you start out with some color, than branch on and off to no color. I just don't see any interpretive reason as to why that would be as such. This, doesn't even seem like a Christmas story to me at all. It, to me, is a Madonna song! It's more like an excuse for Yaoi.

In terms of artwork, there's some stuff in here I like. I absolutely adore the use of textures and just the overall weathered look. And there are some moments where the artwork looks pretty good. I love the use of washed out red in the first and last panel. Choice of font face fit rather nicely too. There are some parts where the line work gets a bit odd-looking and there's moments where the lack of detailing kind of take away from the visual narrative.

The story, on the other hand, left me very cold. To me, the narrative felt rushed and because of that there was kind of an emotional disconnect. And to me, it felt like I had seen this type of narrative a lot before. Now, this is where I'll probably start to sound jaded, but it looks like a lot of other narratives where two pretty, young people (whether they be homosexual or heterosexual) fall in love and somehow there love is tested, but love wins victoriously, in an all-out hands down victory. I'm not saying that is a necessarily bad narrative that should be shunned, but it's been so used that you need to really take some time in writing it so that it doesn't feel trite.
Also, I'm also really not sure as to what motivates them to kiss in public. Did they already know each other? Was it love at first sight? Did they even know the consequences of making their love so public?

Of course, romance of nearly any sort has never been my cup of tea, so I may be the best person to critique this, and I might come down a bit harsher on this then necessary.
I think this could have been something a lot better if a bit more time and thought had been put into the writing... and maybe if it wasn't Christmas themed. I dunno... The Christmas theme made if feel really awkward for me.

Okay...here's where I get lost. Assuming that the two guys did know each other, and assuming that homophobia is alive and rampant here, why would the two guys just kiss in broad daylight like that? I mean if they know that they will get killed then why do it?

I assumed that they were strangers, and then by some strange "love at first sight" moment they kissed. Which makes the "omg" look they give each other after the kiss (in public) so much more dramatic.

All things said not a bad comic. Not your best, but it looks like you were experimenting with a different art and storytelling style.

I'm going to assume the era is Dickensian...

"I dunno what time period this was set in but I hope you understand how recent an idea violent homophobia is, and given the costuming it doesn't appear to take place in a time when homophobia was really present."

Homophobia didn't just die off for a time.. o.O everyone was simply hush-hush about it, like domestic abuse and adolescent molestation. Things like this could still happen.

"I also fail to see the romance or poignancy between two strangers who just kissed in public burning to death while having sex in some cabin in the middle of nowhere."

The way I took it was that they already knew each other. Why would they, complete strangers, just kiss in public?? They had to have known each other already.

I don't know what you thought you were doing with this, but what you DID was create an extremely awkward, confusing, period inaccurate and borderline offensive comic that didn't really make any strong points at all, using a poorly written and confusing song as the only words. It would have been stronger without the Madonna, but not by much. I dunno what time period this was set in but I hope you understand how recent an idea violent homophobia is, and given the costuming it doesn't appear to take place in a time when homophobia was really present.  I also fail to see the romance or poignancy between two strangers who just kissed in public burning to death while having sex in some cabin in the middle of nowhere.  I can sort of get the idea of love at first site and preferring death to having to hide their feelings, but you didn't really set it in a time or place where that was the issue.  If it's pure fantasy, creating a fantasy world whose only strangeness is homophobia is even worse.  I don't think this was such a great idea, especially as a Christmas comic.

Aside from that, the art is alright, but it looks more like you're covering up your line work than really finishing it.
