Jake Hemmingsley was your average, if slightly peculiar teen. His interests, which bent slightly into the occult and the fantastic, did not stop him from achieving what would be displayed as the example of a typical life. He had friends, a job, went to school.

However, one day, fantasy became real. What had been an experiment in viking magic went awry. A spell involving a rune he had created bathed him in light and branded him with it's mark.

He left his old life behind and began to experiment with his newfound powers. With the discovery of his supernatural skills, he decided to search for others as strange as him.

He discovered the existence of Void City, and decided to head there to learn more about his powers, strengthen them, and coexist with (or even befriend) those he met there.
